290277 - this has nothing to do with Obama and Holder, and it is obvious very little is known about Fast and Furious. F &F was started by GWB and stopped by Holder. Obama has exerted executive privilege to protect confidential documents that by law must not be disclosed - much like client/attorney. Read about GWB's SIX executive privileges here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_privilege

306, I did too. Fresh pond at rush hour was always fun. I also navigated a school bus around the Rte 2 rotary by the Concord reformatory at 7:30 each morning. I came in off a side street, crossed the Rte 2 traffic at each end and exited another side road. I think I was the bane of the those commuters life for years.

This repeat DUI offender feels remorse does he? AWWWWWWWWW! He didn't intentionally cause harm or death? Well, if a defense attorney says so, then IT MUST BE SO. It was still unforgivable negligence that led to this sorry outcome, and this scum driver was the one piloting the vehicle. He has to shoulder the responsibility for his negligence and poor decisions. If we, as a society, accept any less, we are inviting total breakdown of all laws that are there to promote public safety. This clown needs to be put away and hopefully taught a tough lesson.

You are judging a person with the name John Smith because of his nickname "Pancho". How did he get that name? It may be for any reason, which I am sure you do not know. And as a legal US citizen it should not make any difference. Do you know of anyone who has the following experience - "seasonal fire employee in wilderness patrol and fire prevention, an engine crewmember, engine foreman, and fire crew foreman, game range manager, law enforcement officer." I think experience in fire and law is very suitable for this area, especially if there is wilderness ranger experience. Welcome to the new ranger, and hope your experience will be a plus to the job.

I happened to be on Cota heading toward Santa Barbara Street at around 2 this afternoon. A sting was taking place at that intersection. There were at least three (maybe four) motorcycle police on Cota. A man had a camera on a tripod near the corner of the Kids World Park. Another man casually stepped off the curb a step or two. When cars went by, the motorcycle police turned onto Santa Barbara Street and were right after them. I don't think the motorists even realized what they had done wrong.

I used to have a righteous attitude: "how dare those people with children... [walk with a stroller in a store, bring them to a restaurant, etc]," and then I had a child -- late in life -- myself. It changed my perspective entirely. NOW I understand how difficult it is to do it. Grocery shopping and everyday errands are very different with a small child in tow. More fun in some ways, but so different. Give 'em a break, people.

Why do a bunch of self-satisfied, smug, complacent couch-potatoes feel compelled to heckle and shout down someone who is trying desperately to raise public consciousness, on any available forum, to the horrendous take-way being done on the American Middle Class. Does anyone here care that within the past 30 years, Americans are no longer employed in production of large appliances such as Central Air Conditioning systems, refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, televisions, stereo systems, dishwashers, and even lawnmowers? Does anyone care that over the past 30 years, the banking and finance industries which used to provide excellent, dignified, community-enhancing careers for millions of Americans, are now populated 90+% by Part-Time "at-will" employees who dress like stock clerks at Best Buy? Wake up, Wake up and smell the coffee before everything we cherish has been taken away. And thank RHS for having the heart to point this out!

Why not the same "down with the deal" position to those who sold him the private land. Why no comment on their "greedyness?" A lot of liberals are actually fairly conservative. Who among us have the multi skills that it takes to do what this guy did. I could not get any neighbor to invest 1000 bucks into a venture, but others can. Why so much negativity? Plus people clamor (obviously) for his products. The pose is.............looking down at your cell phone. Well some people make money off that. Sorry, but he is to be congratulated. Plus from what I have read, not a bad guy, not using his position to cover for his friends like Obama for Holder. That's sick and the obvious demise of a second term. Weird the disconnect.

Possible Accident on Hwy 1 |
2012-06-21 06:20 PM |

I drove State Route 1 today and saw the tell tale signs of what appeared to be the aftermath of a rather dramatic vehicle wreck. I was going West when I came upon a skid patch that, I would say, was about 150 feet long. It trans-versed over into the East bound lane and over the shoulder, of which there was a big crater and/or hole into the ravine surrounded by charred brush. It looked rather knarly. I was expecting to see baby Superman rise out of it. I drive that Route 3-4 times a week on business, and I knew it wasn't there Tuesday. Hope everybody is all right, didn't see it on the news anywhere.

I wish they'd done that at my elementary school when I was a kid. I still have an incredibly strong memory of crossing the street to go to Brandon School when I was a little. And I learned something about people that day. My parents were Republicans and I believed (at that time - early 70s) that men in business suits were respectable and hippies were not. So, one morning I was headed to school and a car was coming. I stopped to wait for the car as was usual, but it actually stopped and waited for me to cross. That was unusual, but I began to cross. Then a second car that came up behind the first decided it didn't want to stop and zoomed around the first car. Can you guess? The car that stopped for me was driven by someone with long hair, that I would classify as a hippie at the time. The car that zoomed around and nearly hit me? You guessed it - driven by a man in a business suit. I was crossing from east to west. The cars were traveling south, so they were in the far lane. Both drivers had a perfectly clear view of me (though I was a kid - maybe 2nd grade or so - so I wasn't exactly tall). I definitely learned something about judging people by their looks that day....

I'm going to vote yes on a roundabout. Even with the problem drivers out there, I believe they benefit us. Montecito, Salinas, Milpas, Long Beach, Germany, France. All have been great at keeping the cars moving along. Less of a headache than waiting for a stop sign or stop light. Now, if they can block people from entering into the Milpas Shopping Center from Carpinteria St. when they just get off of the Milpas roundabout I will be happy. I hate it when you have the right of way going forward towards the roundabout and somebody who wants to go left into the shopping center parking lot gives you an evil eye, honks madly at you and moves into your lane blocking everybody. All get upset at me for not allowing them to illegally cut in. These people could go into the parking lot by entering off of Milpas Street, it's much easier.

I would think a very simple and inexpensive fix would be to aerate the water with a 2 horse submerged aerator. It can't be that expensive. Locals who are currently breathing that very unhealthy air would gladly donate the money. The more air pumps, the sooner the dying pond will heal. Seems like a no brainer. There have to be lots of solutions. This idea is just one of many.

2012-06-21 04:43 PM |

No, leave them alone. I have homeless acquaintances; you might as well say I have mentally ill acquaintances. They have been "swept" so many times from beaches, etc. and been stolen from and lost things so often going and coming from the jail for being "swept" from illegal places, that even irreplaceable family items and I.D. are long gone. Storage is not an answer: There is not the physical energy, the communication ability, the transportation to storage, or the mental comprehension or confidence in the governing body doing the storing, for storage to work out.

We are missing the whole point here, these spaces are for the safety and convenience of young children who need to be taken out of the grocery cart and put in their car seats. Have you ever seen these moms parking the cart behind the car because there is no room between cars and trying to unload the child and put them in the car seat while the cart rolls across the lot loaded with groceries. Have a heart, you all *were* these kids once. Also the figures look unisex to me.....one with a long shirt and one with a short shirt.....round heads, no hair. I guess we see what we want to see:-)

People don't have to be from out of town to use the roundabout incorrectly. The Milpas one is ridiculous most of the time. I have no idea why people insist on entering the roundabout and cutting to the inside to continue on to Milpas. It stays two lanes. No need to cut anyone off for any reason. Of course during the construction it was so much worse. People could not understand the sign that clearly showed the outside lane was for the freeway entrance only. There is just a very high concentration of bad drivers in Santa Barbara.

If there was more housing even for the severely disturbed homeless, it would save the tax payers a great deal in the end. Remember, many of us are a paycheck away from being homeless during these tough economic times. How many more will have their homes foreclosed and their jobs lost??? More public toilets would help too.

The only constraint appears to be that one of the adults has to wear a smock. And/or maybe have very short legs. Really, would people really shop/not shop based on an attempt to be family friendly? Does everyone know that other stores provide shopping carts that look like race cars for the kids? If I was worried about everyone being treated the same I wouldn't shop there either.

Yes, they are efficient "providing you know how to use them", and that is why I *don't* like them. I may know perfectly well how to use the roundabout on Milpas St., but heaven help you if you get a tourist or someone from out of town on one who doesn't have a clue. It's pretty scary when you see them looking the wrong way as they enter.....yikes! The clincher is when they suddenly realize they want to exit and are on the inside lane and cut in front of you. Oh and how about the ones that enter and go the wrong way....I have seen that on the APS roundabout.

Yes, other cities have successfully addressed this issue. The conservative city council majority did nothing. Surprise, surprise, they devoted long term resources to either get them housing or reunite the homeless with family in other cities.

Good point about the overflow, 185P, and the bacterial counts taken in that general area, including down current, probably register those from the bird refuge. Maybe they should do so directly at the point it overflows, since there have been people seen camping and therefore defecating in the area near the parking spaces. ...If the counts are higher, yet another indicator of the problems with unregulated homeless encampments.

B) they save the environment two ways: keeping cars from stopping (acceleration from a stop lets off much, much higher levels of pollution than acceleration from a slow speed) and keeping cars from idling while waiting in the stop line, and C) they're fun shaped!

As for kids running amuck in there the answer is yes! they do and it surprises me that people dont teach their children the difference between a playground and a grocery store! Because immigrants have shown they are willing to work long and hard and save and share with family members, they achieve the American Dream often in one generation: buy a house and send their kids to college. Meanwhile Americans sit around and complain, demand their perceived entitlements and are getting badly left behind. No wonder they are bitter and cling to their union bosses in weaker and weaker attempts to scam the system - that is not that is not the American Dream. The American Dream is hard work and thrift. The American Nightmare is the nanny-state which spends other people's money.

If you have ever shopped at Whole Foods you know these signs mean nothing in reality. You'll see non-low emission vehicles (my SUV included) parked in the low emission spots all the time. Waste of time and money to even put them up to begin with as they are not enforceable. Handicap spots however are a different story.

290130: No. Cars hitting pedestrians are one of the leading causes of non-natural deaths in this city, and probably the leading cause of serious injuries. I know far more people who have been injured by cars as pedestrians than injured by gang violence. Besides, traffic cops don't do gang detail or graffiti busts, and parolees are checked on by parole officers, not police.

Would you want to use a paint brush on a metal garage door? I don't think so..you'd have brush marks all over it. If you want it done right, it requires spraying, which requires technique, which requires time to learn and proper equipment. I would venture, if the door is new, with masking and prep work you are probably looking at a 3 - 4 hour job if done right. If it is an individual panel door (multiple panels that are removable), request that those be removed so they can be painted properly (all edges, etc. get adequate paint). If they paint in place, it's hard to get all the angles, etc. to ensure good coverage everywhere so it lasts a long time. Depending on who you get, you can expect somewhere around 30 - 50 dollars per hour. In this economy it's a lot easier to find a good deal. Lots of trades are hungry, if you feel the price is high get more bids! Hope that helps!

I thought that back when the Sb Zoo went through a major remodel and they rerouted the train that they built a waterfall area that was to provide aeration to the Bird Refuge. What ever happened to this project? Why was it not completed? seems like a perfect way to improve the aeration issue and add some visual interest to teh area with all that is necessary is a pump and some pipe. THe waterfall would fix the issue. Seems like it would be a lot better than a skiff.

Buying direct from fishermen at the harbor, or maybe from the fish markets near the harbor means fresh local fish at reasonable prices. I won't buy from supermarkets, as they are not fresh. I was treated rudely by Kanaloa the two times I was there, and thought their prices were very high. So, I buy most of my fish "frozen at sea" from Trader Joes, and am delighted with the quality.

Santa Barbara County's unemployment... |

Whenever I hear the unemployment percentage, I am reminded of a favorite story from an IT pal. A new 'help desk' manager was hired, who bragged about how calls to the help desk were down 50% after his first 6 months on the job. He used this to indicate what a great job he was doing. Further investigation revealed that the help desk was so unhelpful that people had quit calling. It's always safe to assume the real unemployment number (not to mention the under-employment number) is at least double whatever the government is reporting. As a 4+ decade resident, I can tell you that I don't see any signs of it getting better yet...

I had a tooth infection when I was about 19 on Christmas Eve and my dad called him, he met us at his office, he took X-rays and sent me to the ER for some pain meds and anti-biotics. I seriously doubt you could find any dentist (or doctor) who would do that these days. He was an awesome guy, the best dentist ever and he will be truly missed. Love and prayers to his family from Lisa (Ashcraft) Mathiasen.

I'm proud to say I was one of the many that new Jerry and were all blessed to have had him in our lives. My wife Christine has been cleaning for him for the past 20yrs, both his dentist office and home. I would get to see Jerry at different parties they would have, but I didn't really know the man until the last six months, my wife and I would stay with him from time to time and what a great time we had. ( mainly me ) He would tell me a bunch of his diving stories, a bout diving on ship wrecks or spear fishing with his friend Johnny. Man what a life he had, I'm sure if they had a dive suit that he could dive real deap the Titanic would be missing a few portholes, ha ha the man loved them. I got to meet the rest of his family at his service ( a celebration of his life ) and I have to say, there all just like him, if Jerry and Chris liked you then you were family to them to. Chris and family, our prayers go out to all of you, your always in our heart with Jerry he'll live on forever..... Love you all..

Sucks to be flat broke with a hot tip. :-) Can we buy stock in the island, do you think? Maybe that would be a better investment than my kids' paltry college savings account... As for the snarky comments - I think it's just really hard for anyone who can't afford to buy their own island to swallow that someone is out there buying their own island. The arguement that the recession caused the homeless population in SB to increase is not based on fact. If that arguement were were true, we would see a much more diverse homeless population that we see now. The vast majority of the homeless I see around town are loners who are possibly mental ill or addicted to drugs or alcohol. These people have been homeless for years, if not decades, not just the years the recession has lasted. Point being, these people would have become homeless with or without the recession.

What's sustainable? Not as simple as reading Aquarium "lists." They're wrong half the time, based on outdated information. Whole Foods got major backlash announcing no sale of "redlist" fish. Simple solution: buy fresh, local and support your local fishing community. They deserve kudos: cutting edge work improving sustainability, putting up with 20% no-fishing zones and ever-increasing regulation, and bringing us the best they can week in and week out, in season. A good article by our Marine Advisor appeared in Edible SB Mag. in 2009. Go to cfsb.info/edible to read it.

One man was ranting obscenities as he weaved down State Street. Another was so out of it he fell while trying to bathe in the fountain in the Courtyard at Peet's Coffee Shop. Our guests from out of town were appalled. Said they've never seen so many homeless and they are from San Francisco. No question, it IS a problem!

There is going to be deep excavation at the corner of Foothill/Cieneguitas so that the entire project is level. People driving by or waiting for the bus will look into windows! at the clinic. I'm not at all thrilled, but it is the way of progress and in Santa Barbara, that means Towbes. If it's empty, build on it. That piece of land has never had any structure on it (sans gas stations along Foothill) since time began and now? The days of cows munching on the grass growing there are long gone.

Jerry was our family dentist for nearly 20 years and was always the consummate professional in his craft. His colorful flowery Hawaiian shirts were the standard uniform in his humming office. We became good friends over the years at the dental office and various repair projects at his cliffside home. He exuded that rare "joie de vivre" which was evidenced by his vivid stories and assorted maritime trophies. His health issues in the last couple of years were very challenging, but he faced every setback with courage and determination. I will always remember his integrity and professionalism, but most importantly his unbounded love and devotion to his family and friends. Rest in eternal peace, weary traveller....

All these comments about "the change" in the number of homeless seem to implicitly or directly blame policy on the part of something or somebody such as the ACLU, City Council, etc., and to assume there is an "influx" of homeless. There is no evidence of such an "influx" and there is evidence that the "Great Recession" is largely responsible as it guts jobs, safety nets and health care. But better to blame the agencies you don't like than to face the reality that it we are in an economic disaster created by the financial industry and their political supporters. The detritus of that creation is increased pain, suffering and social dislocation of people on the margin or society. Just as folks are suggesting that we "ship them out of town" we have to remember that other towns have the same idea. Next step is to designate some desert site as a waste people storage and disposal center sort of like toxic waste centers I suppose.

That island was mostly a pineapple and sugar cane plantation in the days before those crops started to lose money. That's why it's never been a big tourist destination because it isn't very interesting to see old plantation fields and refineries. Last time I looked there was only 1 or 2 hotels there. No good beaches that I know of. Maybe he will turn out to be a good steward of the land and rehabilitate it into the tropical paradise that it was before they plowed it under. Niihau is also privately owned and has never been developed because of it. It is one of the few places where the Hawaiian language and culture has survived. Almost no place else in the islands is that true. I was shocked a few years ago when I went to Tahiti and heard Tahitian being spoken- I had never heard Hawaiian spoken in public when I lived in the islands.

I don't think the issue is so much the student that did the research. I think the main issue is the highly questionable competence or professionalism of Chancellor Yang (paid $400,000/yr by taxpayers) who coddles and encourages such trash science with his "highly prestigious" award. Faculty or administrative accountabilty at UCSB is nonexistent. An independent audit would probably horrify. Except for three Citizen-elected members of the 26 member UC Board of Regents, UC is accountable to nobody elected. All UC Regents should be elected. All Chancellors should be elected. It's outrageous that highly-remunerated public officials are not accountable to the voters that pay their salaries. Establish accountability and the absurd nonsense of things like pubic research will disappear pronto.

Exactly 290054, sustainable etc buzz words are a marketing term used to convince consumers to buy lower quality fish at higher prices. A consumer buying some "sustainable" fish is doing nothing to help save our oceans fish stocks. Bottom line is Japan and other places are consuming fish at such a high rate that species will reach extinction levels regardless of conservation efforts. If you enjoy certain types of fish eat them while you can. I make it a point to check the seafood watch list to see what fish are on their way out so I can enjoy them while they are still available. Real blue fin toro is something not to be missed in life. Eat up while you can folks!

I have nothing against someone who wants to build great personal fortune, and a successful company. Something about this purchase seems a little wrong to me however. Lanai is such a special place, it should almost be a national park. I suppose it depends on what he actually does with it. If he closes the island and makes it his own personal yacht club, that seems really wrong. If the island remains open than all is well. But buying such a large part of one US state seems askew. Let's see what he does with the island.

So the "work ethic" of people who are willing to toil 60 hours at minimum or sub-minimum wages with little job safety or environmental protection should be admired? This sort of paean to Darwinian economics needs to be pointed out for what it is, a continuous attack on the efforts to offer a decent job, fair income, medical care and future safe retirement to working people. This is the same argument that extols the immigrant field labor for working under conditions and at salaries that "Americans wont accept" as though this is a good thing! Meanwhile the income of the US middle and lower classes has stagnated or fallen and the profits of the owners, corporations and rich are at record levels! The wealthiest continue to rack up obscene billions and bit other folks are told they should work for less. We are destroying the American Dream.

Heeheeeheee...... I love the histrionics in this thread and all the interested parties with nothing to do with the neighbourhood. The only folks with a legitimate concern are the residents who will be impacted by the construction and the loss of the (unusuable) open space across the street that separates them from the 154 and it's adjacent off ramp. I'm sure, if asked, they would find the traffic from La Colina a greater concern as entitled parents and teens migrate daily through the area in two colossal waves, than a few dozen patients or vendours to the proposed clinic.

000-It may be PC to call them undocumented rather than illegal but that does not change their status in this country. Having one of the many types of visas available to immigrants is legal. Being a permanent resident is legal. Being in this country without proper documentation is illegal. There is no expiration date on that law, it just isn't enforced. That is probably why people get so enraged when legal immigrants and citizens take issue with illegal immigrants and demand the government do something about the problem. It's like going 70 mph on the freeway. Sure it's speeding, everyone knows that. Cops usually won't pull you over for going that speed and usually just pass right by going even faster than that. Most drivers are going faster as well. Nobody seems to notice the law is being broken. Now if a group of people say enough the law is 65 something needs to be done, others say what's the big deal. Acceptance, perspective? Still illegal.

Please teach your children, and remind your friends and family, to stop at curbs; look around, especially for cars turning right or left into your crosswalk when you are standing on a curb waiting to cross; and keep your eyes on cars all the time you are crossing the street. A crosswalk is not a magic safe zone. Any driver at any time can put his foot on the wrong pedal, or get distracted, or have sun in his eyes, or suddenly become ill. We need to have proactive pedestrians as well as watchful drivers.

Now hedge laws are not enforced, properties do not follow the Zoning Laws. The only time the laws are enforced are when you are building. Why does everyone hide behind hedges and walls? 863 and 963- Not all non-citizen immigrants are "illegals"... as you call it. People really need more education on immigration issues. There are different types of status. There are non-citizen immigrants with different types of visas (student, work, spouse, fiancee, political refugee, etc.), there are Legal Permanent Residents (who are also non-citizen immigrants), and undocumented immigrants. And the term "illegal" is so outdated... please... it's funny how we label a human being as "illegal" for one law they broke. Whoever hasn't broken a law here... throw the first stone... See?... You're all "illegals"

Great info, especially about the forthcoming CSF option, which I'll look into. I always go to SB Fish Market. Last time, they had multiple kinds of salmon, but when I asked what the difference was in terms of flavor, etc.the guy behind the counter didn't know. They also had "farmed" and "sustainably farmed" labels and when I asked the same kid what the deal was with the regular "farmed" vs. "sustainably farmed" in this particular instance, he didn't know that either. My other source for good info is the Shopping Guide from the Monterey Bay Aquarium (available on their website).

There are a lot of bad streets in this city where cars use side streets like mini-freeways but in reality those streets are where families with children live so the risk is higher than a ped may dart into the street. As a driver, even if it is their fault for running out in front of me with no warning, I would still be in mental anguish if I hit someone and they were injured or killed. It would have a long term impact on me, even if I did not suffer physical harm. Sure wish that everyone would just follow the rules!

Housing First. Once people have a place, however small, that they can count on to sleep, NOT a temporary shelter, the real problems can be addressed. How did they get on the street and what kept them there? Less expensive to all in $$'s and can save many lost people. We the taxpayers get to choose when we vote. I vote with my $$'s and to rescue, not enable.

SB Fish Market in the Harbor. Join their 'club membership' for $10 and forever after get 10% off the price of what you buy. Thus if you like fresh fish, like to support local fishermen, and save money, go to the SB Fish Market. Kanaloa has great fish, always fresh and supports locals, however, harder to park and a little more $$'s. You choose.

We have a "Crosswalk to nowhere" it lands the school children right into someone front yard and if they skirt around out of the neighbor's yard they land in head-on traffic. Who thought THAT was a good idea? I'll post it one day. Mental anguish. It is stressful to run someone over. Both people that I know, the drivers, were in the right and they were still stressed about it for over a year. An elderly man that exited between cars died.

914-- certified organically food IS different from conventionally grown. No pesticides, no growth hormone regulators (HUMAN endocrine system interrupters like Round-Up), extra humus is added to soil, correct crop rotations are used to avoid soil depletion, etc.; all practices that conventional ag companies shun as they effect their $$ return to stockholders. Actually the first nationwide organic standards were first fought by, and then corrupted and watered down by Corporate Ag when they saw that they might muscle out the small local growers if they made it difficult (costly) enough to comply with. This new bill seeks to level the playing field and eliminate allowances for using non-organic feed for dairy products (the USDA this year OK'd feeding genetically modified and heavily sprayed alfalfa for organic dairy cattle feed use) and to disallow the use of GMO crops as feed for organic animal products. Corporate Organic Ag has found ways to bend the laws to allow them to subvert the original intent to provide a clean and environmentally sustainable ag product, on order for themselves to make more profit at consumer's expense. VERY interesting information HERE on who owns which of your favorite 'organic' food brands. (hint: many are investment firms, not food producers) https://www.msu.edu/~howardp/organicindustry.html A great place to keep up with these food source issues is The Organic Consumers Association, a non-profit watchdog group. You can subscribe to their free newsletter. Also, the Pesticide Action Network has an e-newsletter that's free. Just Google them both and sign up.

Eliminate funding for the career "HOMELESS ENABLING" individuals and organizations who run the " HOMELESS MAGNET PROGRAMS", and the problem will migrate to a city dumb enough to build more 'magnet' programs. These programs don't solve problems, they just lure the enabled homeless to new locations. Remove the programs and you'll remove the 'HOMELESS TOURISTS' who seek them out soon thereafter.

Last I saw the police decoy was wearing a bright orange vest that said police. If you see someone like that waiting to cross, I suggest you come to an immediate stop no matter where you are. I'd like to invite the police to come over to the westside along Mission. The speed limit is 25 mph but almost no one goes that slow. There is only one crosswalk at Modoc for the La Cumbre kids to to use to cross Mission, even though Gillespie is supposed to be a "safe street" for the kids to use to get to school. When I'm walking my dogs, crossing Mission is always an adventure.

I don't think we should be worrying so much about the "slightly illegal" activities of people who are for the most part risking their own neck doing what it is they are doing. If a jaywalker gets hit, chances are only the jaywalker will be hurt. Same is true for a skateboarder in the bike lane. Caveat Peccator. But when it comes to peds legally crossing in crosswalks, drivers need to be aware. And these stings raise awareness.

602 you obviously don't go to Zaca Lake very often... it's fed by a natural spring and the water is wonderful there, it is SO not a good comparison to what is happening at the bird refuge. How about instead of coming on here and complaining about those of us that are concerned citizens that actually care about our city you find somewhere else to be hostile? That would be nice. Thank you and have a great day!

Dan can you describe Wet Wednesday? Does the canoe group ever get up to Morro Bay? A friend of mine crews in a dragon boat and trains there. Have been meaning to get up there some morning to watch them. They compete in sprint races rather than for distance. All Breast Cancer survivors, doing it for physical therapy.

Pedestrian Sting |

One sting at a time... sting drivers today then tomorrow go after jaywalkers then the next day focus on bike riders that run red lights and then please set up stings for all of them at once. It WILL increase revenue and will decrease pedestrian vs car, bike vs car and bike vs pedestrian accidents. It's a win win for all if SBPD can focus on ALL of the issues, that is the only way that real results will be seen! Do it starting now and do it all summer, our city will make a fortune off the tourists because they are BIG offenders, especially downtown where they are turning the wrong way onto our one way streets!!!

I'd like to see the police set up two video cameras on any busy intersection...let's say Carrillo and Chapala. One video camera is looking at the driver and the other is looking at the license plate. A cop can monitor the drivers remotely and when he sees a driver talking or texting on a cell phone, he hits a save button which permanently records that snippet of video. Then issue the tickets. I would guarantee you that 95% of the tickets would go to women under the age of 25.

Just a caution... ...for you bird feeding edhatters out there--these tiny babies are easily drowned in deep bird watering dishes on the ground--so make sure you never overfill them (it's tempting, as the big birds splash out so much water while bathing) or put large pebbles in the bottom to make it safer for the "Kiddie Pool" crowd. They need a safe exit route to dry land.

As a mathemetician I always hated the term "unemployment rate". It is not a "rate". It should be "unemployment percentage". If the "unemployment percentage" drops then the "unemployment rate" would be a negative number.

More rules and regulations will, of course, require more bureaucrats to oversee and enforce. More public sector salaries and pensions for the poor taxpayer to bankroll. This is how Lois intends to cut unemployment. Make the Federal Government bigger. Yes, that is the ticket.

924--Strawberries reach their peak, as far as fruit production, in the 3rd season; after this productivity declines, so either allow some plants to establish runners for a new generation of bearing plants, or replace 1/2 your bed this summer to renew your bathtub berry farm. Berries are still available in 4- and 6-packs at independent garden centers for those wanting some homegrown berries this summer--they will bear till fall.

I noticed the Ca Strawberry Board ( the PR arm of the growers assn) has bought sponsorship spots on the local NPR affiliate (KCBX) morning news program, trumpeting their high placement in terms of total ag production. They also make claim to "responsible use of our area's natural resources" and boast of creating thousands of jobs on the Central Coast. Both of these statements stretch and bend the truth without telling the whole story of soil, air, and water pollution, and seasonal low-wage, benefit-poor jobs. I like to eat berries too but try to find organically-grown ones (yes it can be competetively done) as the new chemical permitted as a replacement for Methyl Bromide, Methyl Iodide, is even more toxic and dangerous to local residents and applicator-laborers.

Tree Help |

probably European White Birch, a riparian species (needs lots of water to do well) used commonly as a yard tree. Will tolerate the shallow watering of turf. Can be messy from aphid attacks on the foliage (black Sooty Mold which grows on the sticky plant sap they deposit on leaves as a residue of their feeding) The water-seeking roots can also pose problems to sewer and water service lines as well as landscape irrigation pipes. Keep well away from these if possible. Can reach 40 to 60 feet in height in areas of high summer water (Pacific Northwest and East), but in CA, usually to about 25-40ft. Nice fall color with the golden leaves. Bark is brown when new and turns white after about 2 full growing seasons.

All of the above (or below). There is also a new CSF (community supported fishery) starting up on July 1st. You can read about it and sign up online at http://www.communityseafood.com/. We've been participating in the pilot. The fish is available for pickup once a week at Backyard Bowls in La Cumbre and downtown or at Goodland Kitchen in Goleta. It's right from the boats and you'll have access to recipes and cooking tips.

So they are going to "protect the integrity of organic produce"??? Anyone who knows anything about these silly laws knows that they are just going to make it harder and more expensive to have your produce certified "organic", and thus making it only viable for huge mega-corp's to sell and distribute "organic" produce. They do this with all industries, not just food. sigh... As for Lois Capps...gimme a break, its election season and she has some competition this year, whoopdedoo...She will still probably win and continue to be a politician and a lousy one at that.

en francais, c'est "Boo ganh veeh (tiny 'uh')" the plant named after the Count of Bougainville (Boo gahn Vee). Variety shown is probably 'Barbara Karst', the most popular and hardy of the reddish pinks. Gets huge, has thorns, and can be very messy (dropped bracts) Good nesting place for rats too.

As Raytheon is one of the area's biggest employers, and with plenty of other Defense contractors in the area, let's hope Lois backs increased defense spending on research and development. Trust me, if we keep going down the path we are on you will see massive layoffs at Raytheon et al. Not good for this area.
