The Santa Barbara County Fire Depar...

2012-06-11 10:51 PM

SY, even if we had three or ten times the resources available, those fires were not containable.

Just last Saturday in Colorado, a two acre fire spread to 15,000 acres in one day. And as I write this it has spread to 64 square miles.

Remember what killed the three fires in our area? It was when the winds died, not the number of firefighters.

Cutting services is NOT acceptable to me, nor should it be to any of the tax payers in this community. You want a volunteer Fire Dept.?, careful what you wish for. Have you ever been to parts of the USA that are served by volunteer Fire Depts? You don't want to go there, unless of course you like living in Hooterville...think, Mayberry RFD.

Searching For Incident Log

As far as I know the USCG does not publish incident logs, which is too bad, because they would make for very entertaining reading. The closest thing I know of is the "Harbor Blotter" of The Log: dubya dubya dubya dot thelog dot com slash HarborBlotter (Edhat will not let me publish a link. Hooray Edhat.)

Of course, getting a VHF radio and tuning in to 16 & 22A on the weekends provides hours of fun, if you are in to schadenfreude.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Depar...

2012-06-11 08:29 PM

The system is set up for a worst case scenario, not best. Many in emergency services will say there are other ways to do it. But, "other" is often not "better." Most days, police officers dont need their guns. Most days, paramedics dont need all their medicines. Most days, firefighters dont need their hoses, ladders, etc.
However, on your worst day...you want the world to show up at your door one minute ago.
As a community, folks need to decide what is acceptable. Is it acceptable for a fire engine, ambulance or police car to take 15 minutes to get to your house? 5 minutes? You are the elderly fall victim that can't get up, what's acceptable?

So if you cut fire departments by 50% what happens when your house catches on fire, or the hillside, or your trapped in your car? There are numerous emergencies that occur that require many fire engines. Numerous emergencies that would become much worse if not for having many resources available to quickly respond. %80 of the calls you refer to are not non-emergencies. They are a mix of varying degrees of priority medical responses. They are all emergencies for those that call 911 and as a taxpayer, I expect my neighborhood fire engine and ambulance to arrive to my door quickly. The non-profit senior response team is the fire department, they are already doing that job and many more.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Depar...

2012-06-11 07:36 PM

What a great opportunity for our communities to re-evaluate our priorities and various ways to get the job done. 80% + of the calls our firemen go on are true non-emergencies.. many are result of senior citizens that have fallen. The overwhelming response to a fall like this is firemen & ambulance. Very expensive and overdone. We should really cut back the fire departments by 50% and start a non-profit senior response team that is first aid trained and IS the first responder. IF it is actually an emergency, then call in the big guns.. but again, 80% of calls are non-emergencies and we send in very well paid professionals to help someone get their elderly spouse up off the ground. There has to be a smarter way to run a government. The firemen are all amazing hereos, BUT we just don't need their skill level most of the time.

It isnt funding issues, it is the choices that the people in charge are making. How about instead of cutting firefighters, police, and other emergency personal...we cut the county clerk and staff, or how about getting rid of other paper pushers. It isnt that there isnt money, it is where the money is being spent.....let's try not having those firefighters for one week.......and see how terrible life is. Quit threatening us with cuts to emergency personal and schools...how about stepping up and cutting the costly programs that dont do anything.

Parasailing or Hang Gliding Lessons

There are 3 fine paragliding schools: Eagle, Fly Above All, and Circling Hawk (look up on internet). Go to Elings South, the training hill, or call Circling Hawk, then watch and talk to the person who is best for you. SB is a great place to fly and learn, but paragliding's inherent hazards make a thoughtful choice of instructor more important than a casual recommendation from a L-serv.

For the first time ever the Santa B...

2012-06-11 06:10 PM

The sad part of this is that we're probably the only country that would settle for this "Disneyland style" approach to the making of bell sounds. To say that it has been improved is false. Tying the recording to the clock movement means absolutely nothing.

If you've been outside of the U.S., you know that bell towers (at least in Europe) always have real iron or bronze bells. There is no comparison in the sharp clang of a real bell when it rings.

I'd suggest before the City Council goes off on another misplaced agenda item as they are known to do, someone needs to school them on just how phoney our bells appear to tourists, not to mention to our local citizens. I've long thought that this is an embarassment to Santa Barbara, and this "news" today makes it even worse. They just don't get it.

From across the street, I heard his voice, booming as he demanded to know the purpose of their visit. They gave him their stock reply, to which his booming voice could be heard saying, "Sorry guys, I just don't believe in door-to-door religion."

@ 287019P

Human society advances through critical thought and analysis. Slapping the word "religious" or "personal" on a ridiculous belief does not exempt it from examination and criticism. If someone makes fun of a belief, then an intellectually honest person should examine that belief and either abandon it or justify it. Someone clinging to an absurd, unsupportable belief has no grounds for complaining about others making fun of it.

Maybe the churches don't realize how dangerous it is for people these days to open their door to any stranger and are still operating under the assumption that it's like the "good old days" when people at your door were who they said they were and meant you no harm.

I think it is well known that we have many elderly people living alone here in SB and Goleta and they have become targets for thugs. Maybe the churches should be aware and respectful about not going door to door anymore. Anyone can dress up in a suit and say they are a missionary.

They aren't "worms" as folks are referring to them here. They are caterpillars, will make chrysalises, and then emerge as moths. The wealthy "always" pay taxes? And "most Americans" don't? Are you joking, or just repeating the right-wing lies that are spoon fed to you? Anyone with even with the most basic understanding of tax policy knows this is not even close to the truth.

Guess you missed the article (that's currently all over the internet) that states that 6 of 400 highest earning families in the USA paid ZERO income taxes (with reported average income of $202.4 million).

2012-06-11 10:28 AM

What I find fascinating and IRONIC is that all these people that take what they consider 'free' services and those that serve them often are the ones railing against the 'wealthy' or 'rich.'

Yet if it is true that this place offering services has declined in contributions it is most likely because of two things--decrease in income for not only wealthy but people of all economic class (when the wealthy or business makes less they hire less workers) and/or they are taxed more which results in less income in which to donate and in fact some donate less when taxed even more on principle alone. The rich and wealthy pay most of the taxes anyway.

Studies show most Americans don't pay taxes. The wealthy always do.

I am a conscientious smoker who does not smoke in our townhouse or on the townhouse balcony. I always step outside into the townhouse parking lot, well away from all buildings. I understand that occasionally the wind can take the smoke towards the buildings and if people have their windows open they might get a small whiff of smoke, but I do my best to minimize that. And I dare any scientist to prove that the iota of smoke inhaled from 75 to 100 feet away has any effect on health.

I maintain that the annoyance from barking dogs is 1000X worse that what someone might get from my smoke. I don't have a problem with an apartment manager banning indoor smoking, but I'd love to see the Towbes Group outlaw all loud pets as well. No squawking birds. No dogs.

World Oceans Day

2012-06-11 09:07 AM

Maine study finds potentially disastrous threat to single-celled plants that support all life

BOOTHBAY, Maine — Phytoplankton. If the mention of the tiny plant organisms that permeate the world’s oceans isn’t enough to pique your interest, consider this: They produce the oxygen in every other breath you take.

Still not interested? This is where it’s hard not to take notice. In 2007, the reproduction rate of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Maine decreased suddenly by a factor of five — what used to take a day now takes five — and according to a recently released study by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay, it hasn’t bounced back.

So what does it mean? According to Barney Balch, the lab’s senior research scientist and lead author of the study, such a change in organisms at the bottom of the planetary food chain and at the top of planetary oxygen production could have disastrous consequences for virtually every species on Earth, from lobsters and fish that fuel Maine’s marine industries to your grandchildren. But the 12-year Bigelow study focused only on the Gulf of Maine, which leads to the question, will it spread?

“I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to know that if you shut down the base of the marine food web, the results won’t be positive,” said Balch.

Acidification
From wikipedia:
Ocean acidification is the name given to the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.[1] About a quarter of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere goes into the oceans, where it forms carbonic acid.
As the amount of carbon has risen in the atmosphere there has been a corresponding rise of carbon going into the ocean. Between 1751 and 1994 surface ocean pH is estimated to have decreased from approximately 8.25 to 8.14,[2] representing an increase of almost 30% in "acidity" (H+ ion concentration) in the world's oceans.[3][4][5]
This ongoing acidification of the oceans poses a threat to the food chains connected with the oceans.[6]

Although you cannot fully get rid of them, your high pressure water washer or hose dislodges many of them and often they cannot find their way back or are taken by birds or affix to leaves on the ground. Thus you reduce the damage to the tree without using anything but water and it is helpful to the tree. Be mindful, however, of the amount of water used $$$.

Another Blow to the Poorest Amongst...

2012-06-11 08:22 AM

Churches, and other religious institutions, traditionally have been good for the troubled soul. Nothing wrong with finding a spiritual home where one can find mental and emotional comfort and connection.

There is no reason the "state" (taxpayers) should shoulder this burden when hundreds of religious institutions in this town offer tax-exempt spiritual care for those in need.

Tough if one does not like "religion". If there is a need, one needs to find ways to have it met with existing resources and local religious institutions are a varied and excellent under-utilitized and under-appreciated local resource.

Until we get a generation weaned off of tax-supported state nanny care for their range of expected human needs and back into religious organizations where they belong, the state will remain bankrupt and inappropriately draining out "other people's money" for selfish. personal demands.
