This new roundabout is bizarre. So far it looks like one traffic hazard has been traded for another. It is a single lane with a high crown in the middle. In a passenger car you can't see over it. It requires 55 MPH traffic to drop to 15 MPH to traverse a small tight traffic circle. I haven't seen a semi negotiate it yet, but I wish them well.

This one was so darn stupid! The person ate a brownie and "felt like he was going to die," per dispatcher. I do agree with 373. The question would end up in the courts for every case, so that levels of responsibility could be determined. It would just be more expensive.

Far, far, more of our taxes are spent on unnecessary wars than on rescues such as these - that are a tiny drop in a large lake, in comparison. Also, taxes are at their lowest in 50 years. However, people should learn to be responsible - not only in this area, but in so many others - like not trashing the back country with cans, bottles, etc that were heavier when they were hiked in, than when they were just left on the ground after being emptied.

Neighborhood Disturbance Near Canno... |

The students who put on the concert could practice being good neighbors by letting anyone in a 3 mile radius know about the concert, and its noise level. Then people could plan to be out of the noise zone, or do something to block it. Also, the notification could serve to let the impacted residents know the timeframe of the concert, and that it is a once a year thing. The problem here is that it really was too loud, and no notice went out. I would send a copy of this blog to the people who put on the event, and let them see who was impacted. It probably wasnt intentional.

ROGER DODGER - 342 here. I work in the construction field doing honest, value adding work. Why do you ask? I do get tired of my taxes going toward able-bodied folks on welfare and/or dope smokers who for no other reason could be productive members of society. Really, I don't care if someone wants to smoke, and I know some who do and don't cause problems, but don't make it my business as a tax payer or otherwise member of a shared society by acting like a moron out in public.

As part of the lycra nation, I'm also ashamed that this person makes me look bad. I am extremely careful to follow the rules and have gotten downright angry with other riders who don't. The few give the many a bad name. Dillydally, I find it interesting that you find the "vast majority" of cyclists are in the wrong while drivers very rarely are. I think if you were on a bike you might find the opposite to be true. While obeying the rules fully I've been cut off, had bottles thrown at me, slammed into a car trunk because the guy swerved, and on and on. Also keep in mind that there's only going to be one winner when it is 2 ton car versus 150lb cyclist. Flesh loses. I truly hope the OP's husband recovers rapidly and the cyclist is caught. We have an amazing area for riding and we need to treat the roads and drivers like we want to be treated.

1 mile up the trail and needed rescue? Those must've been excellent brownies. I agree it is difficult to draw a line, but I don't want to pay for that! Rescues are expensive and there has to be some degree of "you're an idiot, pay up" factor. Notice that rescues are on the rise now that everyone has cell phones? (note, I'm not commenting one way or another on the legality of weed here, just the duh factor)

And 363 - given the severity of her offense it is unlikely she will get her license back anytime soon - the DMV and the courts make it hard on purpose as they should. She has to live with what she did - the realization of the full gravity of her actions is more of a sentence than any judge could give her.

Don't charge them. Where are we going to draw the line? First search and rescue, then fire and paramedics to be followed by 911 house calls. The courts will be filled with "Was it an accident", "Was it stupidity?", "Was it the first time?", "Were they old enough to know better?", "Do they have Pre-existing conditions?", "Should people with pre-existing conditions be banned from hiking, biking, walking?", "Should people over a particular age be banned from hiking?". Who is going to pay the court costs? Who wants to jam up the courts? As long as they don't burn down the county let'em slide.

If you were stupid, as judged by the folks doing the rescuing, then you should be charged. So, trying something beyond your limits? Charge 'em. Purposefully getting stoned or drunk while in the outdoors in unfamiliar surroundings? Charge 'em. Hiking without knowing the trails or referring to a map or having a compass, and then getting lost? Charge 'em. The only way some people will grow up and assume adult responsibility for themselves is if we start making them assume adult responsibility for themselves. Accidents happen, but far more often when you failed to prepare appropriately. (I'd be bit more lenient with those under 25, as the 'consequences' sections of their brains are still forming.)

So either we understand the sentence better than the DA (scary), the sentence was reported incorrectly, or we're missing something. I'd like to know whether she is getting a year in jail after killing someone or not. If she gets off without any jail time after drinking & driving & killing someone, I'm gonna hurl.

I wouldn't call eating pot brownies knowingly putting yourself in harm's way but getting back to the point, it's too difficult to delineate what is deliberately putting yourself in harm's way so no. However, if you're mountain climbing a major peak without a transponder, yes.

I did exactly this, and it isn't lame. I learned it in 3rd grade. I'm 58 years old now. It's a free way to see the eclipse safely. A thin piece of cardboard, a pin to make a clean, round, tiny hole, a while piece of paper. Magic!

Janine Garfinkel custom molded 50 different peoples in-ear plugs (for hearing protection, not for custom fit earphones) last year at our gun shop and ammo factory in Goleta. Everyone who had them made wears them and swears by them. Janine periodically does this for shooters and musicians, when the demand is sufficient to justify scheduling a day. She is a trained audiologist, works professionally as such, and is passionate about protecting your hearing. I recommend her highly. Garfinkel.Audiology@gmail.com

315 you are correct. It is easier to remember the ones that are misbehaving, though experience does make me more wary of cyclists than cars with respect to flagrant traffic violations. I also want to mention that you are totally correct about waiving cyclists through. Thank you for bringing that up. I was guilty of this for a while but have been educated. It is dangerous to wave a cyclist, pedestrian etc... to take your right of way. You may not have checked all directions and may be indicating that an action is safe that is not. OP best wishes for your husbands speedy recovery. Fleeing the scene is a serious offense, to think anyone wouldn't stay to make sure medical attention was on the way is disheartening.

I grew up here and loved the Spanish culture and always wished that my blond hair was dark instead. We were taught all about local history and Spanish culture growing up but the schools aren't focusing on that much anymore, my kids have NO clue about local history. It is so sad! Fiesta was always a very large part of our culture but now it feels less like a local holiday and more of a tourist and party draw. It makes me sad.

As a spandex wearing roadie, I just ask that cars treat me like other cars. That also means not trying to wave me through at a stop sign or a left turn yield if they arrived first. That puts me at fault if I do decide to go through. Most drivers in Santa Barbara are very curteous and respectful to me when I ride. As with anything though, there are always some people that shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of anything. Also keep in mind that many cyclists do follow the rules. You just happen to remember the ones that cut in front of you. The exact same sentiment can be said for people operating motor vehicles. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch.

Dillydally, by enjoying life, do you mean celebrating a time that destroyed one culture, replaced it with another, then ceded the area to a 3rd culture which further decimated the area until a mere shadow of the original idea remained, which has been lost to corporate greed, commercialization, exploitation[especially of children] & has created an environment of hostility, violence, substance abuse, theft, arson & murder?....Is that what you mean?.... said in a nice way....

Unfortunately many of the cyclists dont share the attitude of the rational sounding folks who posted here. I assume cyclists will blast through stop signs, ride the wrong way on a road, make dangerous un-signaled turns, or some other dangerous maneuver because that is the norm. Share the road is the slogan but the attitude of the vast majority of cyclists I encounter on the road indicates that sharing means mine mine MINE!!!! On the other hand I have very rarely seen a car do anything to a cyclist that wasn't courteous.

Open your eyes OSD is so much more than the bars on state. You are so fixated on people having fun that you dont approve of that you admit you aren't capable of having your own fun. If you search on google cyclemaynia time trial, it should be the first result, with the contact and organizer info. I would post a link but I'm not a subscriber to edhat. Seven months after switching to a diet of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, eggs and weekly servings of rice, chicken and fish, I'd lost 50 pounds and stopped taking blood pressure medication. Blood tests show pancreas, liver and kidneys are all functioning well again. I'm not hungry and I'm not subject to food cravings. Industrialized food is the culprit, especially wheat and sugar. It's worth giving them up!

This is great. A big thank you to the volunteer group who is working on this. My $50 check was already in the mail a while back to help because there is community support, both big and small to make this happen. Hope others will write checks to in care of this project and send to the County Arts Commission. $10, $25 dollars each can add up. One question though: how much more does the low-volatility paint cost that meets the city environmental standards imposed for this project, compared to how much regular paint would cost if there were not such standards in place? What is the cost of being green compared to the cost of not being green for this project?

I get the meaning/etymology etc. (as well as the distinction between adjectives and nouns that's not taken into account ) but am not going to quote any online dictionaries, but the usage here is still questionable and over-the-top. Bottom line is that using extreme language, broad accusations and taking on an implicitly scolding tone will seldom win converts to, or sympathy for, one's cause. I use plastic (responsibly) every day and am no shill for any industry.

@281134P I said "throughout the U.S." ... Montecito and Hope Ranch are included in that. To make your case about me, you need to provide evidence that discarded diapers, beer cans, and other trash in rivers is as prevalent in Montecito and Hope Ranch as it is in the Bible belt and other rural areas, not merely that you have seen it occur.

235P: Indeed! Here's another vote for an owl over an eclipse - I did see the eclipse but not the owls. Those who consider themselves "environmentalist" should think long and hard on this ballot and vote NO on Y to save much of the last undeveloped open spaces, the "lungs" of Santa Barbara and the habitat for owls (and quite a few other species.) Unlike an eclipse, once gone, it'll never return.

Perverse: Contrary to the accepted standard or practice. Plastic was designed to be used in places like space, not to hold water so we can all be lazy. Human beings have become completely perverse, we think we are above and can control nature. As with all things, keep it simple stupid. Why do you think bacteria have reigned supreme since the beginning of life?

Really interesting, the "non-citizens" comment. As someone mentioned, how do you know? I know people you would call that who are 8th, 9th, 10th generation Santa Barbarans; there ancesters founded the town. Some, who you might call "non-citizens" are Chusmash descendents; they, of course, were only here for about 10,000 years before we arrived. And you? When did you come?

They aren't living next to the bowl, they live a few miles away from a university. That's crazy. And shut up about the helicopters already. They aren't that bad. We had, what? 141, people are upset about more than "one day of music", they complain it isn't unusual on weekends. Also, the words can be heard quite a distance. I love loud (REAL)rock n'roll, when I'm in the mood for it. Not someone elses idea of music when I want a quiet time in the garden, a nap, etc. Luckily, I live in Carp. Do your helicopters go non-stop for hours at a time?

Those poor domestic white Pekin ducks don't fare well in ponds when they are dumped. Selfish people buy them for their tots with total disregard to the fact that they are not toys and then kick them out of the car when they tire of them. They cannot fly as wild ducks do so they are pretty defenseless from predators. We animal rescuers dread Easter every year as it unleashes a wave of discarded ducks and bunnies. I wish there were more compassionate people in this world.

I would avoid the place on De la Vina. I had a very unpleasant experience there. They promised me that they had a hearing center in the area I was moving to so that if I had a problem with the hearing aid I was ordering i could have maintenance on it at no charge within a certain length of time. I told them this was very important to me and I would not order unless I had that assurance. When I did my own research I discovered there was no center in my new area. When I decided to cancel my order they charged me a $300.00 fee to "restock" and threatened me with a lawsuit if I didn't pay it. They were VERY aggressive about collecting the money and took no responsibility for the misinformation they gave me. Very questionable ethics and business practices.

Call the Sheriff--again. I have repeatedly been told they are the enforcers of noise in Montecito. However, now that the Carpinteria station is closed, Montecito may not get service on less threatening safety issues like noise. If the Sheriff says that's that true, then call Salud Carbajal's office and complain about slacking safety service. They are about to set a budget and he thinks service has stayed level. If that's not true, he should know now.

Get over your complaining self and let it ride for heaven's sake. Move to Montana if you want total peace and tranquility. Realize that sometimes others want to have fun and it's going to cause noise and stop being a little crybaby. Late into the night? What does that mean, 9pm? My gosh. I live 10 miles away from the airport and can hear planes taking off because noise travels in quite places! If you lived in NYC you'd not even hear the party do to all the ambiant noise you'd be absorbing.

Martin grew up in Goleta. around 48 years old. He and his bros were "Haskel's Locals" and dominated that beach prior to Bacara swooping in. He always had a positive demeanor and woulid befriend everyone with an open heart. He'd also stand loyal with his friends when need be. He touched many, many lives and had a ton of old friends and acquaintences. Yet sadly alcohol and depression sang inside of him but he'd rarely show his sadness. I'm sure somehow he felt he was turning full circle and would end his life where it all started for him. I hope his bros see it that way. Last person you'd think of doing this but somehow, through all the pains he suffered, it somehow comes complete.

Judging by our current state of affairs... I'd say our grandparents also have no idea how to accomplish any of those things. As I stated, plastic can be useful, but it is the PERVERSION of said material that makes it so disgusting. I also think humans have screwed ourselves more than any other species. We are so greedy thinking we can sustain such vast numbers of people, that we have pretty much secured our existence as an extinct species in the future.

My parents bought a small lot in Eldorado about ten years ago ...they love it ..tThey are less than a quarter mile from the beach and pool house cabanas for the ranch. TheEldorado has security so that people cannot just enter the ranch randomly .They soak in the salty therapeutic. Bay everyday however you have to time the tides as they go out over one mile and you are left literally high and dry . The shrimp are plentiful and the food is mostly natural ( my mom is badly allergic to most food additives )she finds that the poultry and local vegis are free of all the things that make her sick at home in the statesthey have had a very frustrating time with utilities and local building contractors. They often lose they're Internet connection and it takes weeks of no shows before they get help .the contractors are either very reliable and honest or the exact opposite ......all in all they find they can live very comfortably on very limited income ....

2012-05-21 07:49 AM |

It would help to know where this traffic stop happened on the 25 miles of 154 between SB and SY. There was a HA event at Cachuma/Live Oak so if the stop took place near there it could be related but without sufficient data it's hard to come to any conclusion except that a guy and his dog got pulled over somewhere on 154 between SB & SY.

On a more serious note, this issue is presently working its way through the county bureaucracy to curtail out of area property owners from using a loophole to rent their property as weekly party palaces...remember the Kardashian fiasco and Ken Switzer's Figueroa Farmhouse? Send a note to your planning commissioner and let him know you expect him to do something- C. Michael Cooney 1st District c/o Planning & Development, Hearing Support 123 East Anapamu Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101 (805) 969-1182

Most Gun Shows have people there that do that. Ventura Show is coming up in early June. $55 for regular hearing protection.. I don't remember if it's more to integrate buds.

Roger frozen beverages can be dangerous. In the 70's my friend and I were on our way to the Cliff Dr bus stop headed for the plunge and one of my fellow Monroe rats (now famous) hurled a Slurpee at me. I ducked but fell off the curb into the side on the oncoming bus. Other then the abrasions, the red stains from the slushy and sprained arm the worst thing was the hysterical women who wouldn't let us continue on our excursion, called my mom on told her "your daughter just got hit by a bus" Then we had 2 hysterical women and didn't get to go to the pool that day.

Neighborhood Disturbance Near Canno... |

Seems a bit odd to hear people living near a university AND an airport complaining about noise. But it sounds more like this is a judgement against the type of music being played and who is putting it on. It it was a band you liked you'd be outside enjoying the free concert.

Why is it that we have food at every event? 3 squares a day and all is well. No wonder that Santa Barbara is losing it's edge in the looks department.

High fire season will start at 8 a.... |

Goodie!!!! Soon there will be lots of OT for fire personnel to buy boats, motorhomes, jetski's and new trucks. Every summer the economy gets a jump start from over paid fireman... This statement cracks me up every year. We have lots of rain, "It's going to be a bad fire season", have no rain, "It's going to be a bad fire season". Let the fear of no fireman "On-Duty" begin. It's ironic that these statements come as the budget session begins. Grab your wallets you are about to get robbed......

Cool eclipse sun flares. Beware of shooting straight into the sun as the optics can concentrate the sunlight enough to burn your retina if not your sensor.

"Idiocracy"....yes I remember that movie, pretty funny. But when I read comments about the "dangers of plastic" I am more reminded of the TV series "Portlandia" Most of you have no clue how plastic is actually beneficial as a material. You latch onto the latest fad think and now plastics are bad. Weren't you all railing against inoculations last week or something, then it was "organic sustainable" food, then it's whatever it will be next week. You have no idea what you are talking about, no idea how to feed 6billion+ people per day, no idea how energy is generated and sold, no idea how capitalism works as opposed the hell on earth that is everything else. You are children living off the accomplishments of your grandparents and complaining all the time about how bad a job they did building the world you now occupy. Ayn Rand was friggin Nostradamos!
