The Decline of Arctic Sea Ice

2017-03-19 09:49 PM

Facts are facts, and nobody is entitled to his own set. The projections for sea level rise have a range - pessimistic to optimistic, and the blue line was based on a pessimistic projection. Many parts of the world got smart, and implemented carbon emission restrictions, which helped even more.

ANSWER: March Edness Day 10

2017-03-19 09:08 PM

@ Rex, Sorry for your bad day last week! I entered the Kids World answer correctly and early Friday however, I don't see my moniker on the most recent list but I am on the top 11 group! Go figure. This March Edness thing just started out as a simple, "okay, I'll give it a shot kind of thing" but turned into a monster when my wife threatened to put me out on the porch because I was spending too much time researching this stuff. I am at a huge disadvantage since i was never raised here and have no friends/family to give me tips. It's definetly a members only club(no disrespect). The puzzles are more addictive then the NYT crosswords. That San Marcos High really stumped me. I ended up researching tile colors and their meanings, arches, history..... and I finally got it 10 hours later! And that damn Good Cup Halo. I'll likely drop out this week, we'll see!

City Council to Discuss Tenant Righ...

2017-03-19 08:48 PM

FACTS #1 - The City has not prevented illegal short term rentals from operating. STRs are eating up the available housing. - I'm happy to take the City Council on a Tour of Ground Zero STR HELL in Santa Barbara.

#2 -The Downtown is looking like a ghost town. - Wonder if it could be because the middle class has been run out of town by the high residential rents?

#3 -We have ghost houses. These houses sit empty except for a few weeks a year. How does this help our economy? No one lives here year round. No one spends here...

#4 -The AUD is gentrifying our neighborhoods and driving up rents because there ARE no rental rate limits. Our workers won't return to live in Santa Barbara because of the AUD rates and the fact that everything is rental! We are pushing them out.

#5 -Tourism & Retail represent >32% of our economy. These are the lowest paying sectors. - We need to diversify. Where will our future jobs come from?

City Council to Discuss Tenant Righ...

2017-03-19 08:23 PM

My family has been local to SB county since mid 1800s. I finally had to move out of SB about a year ago. It's really a bummer when you work full time making really decent money, have average bills/debt, no kids etc ... and still can't afford your own place in your home town ... but its really not worth it to stay and live beyond your means in a shit studio or apartment in a bad part of town. I think it's disgusting the cost of rent in SB I don't see there being any kind of relief for it though :(

City Council to Discuss Tenant Righ...

2017-03-19 08:13 PM

The Independent ran an article about the steep 20% increase in rents last year. I'd say 20% is a low number. I know 3 people in the last 3 months that had huge rent increases they were:

$500 increase = 25%
$900 increase = 35% (2nd within a year)
$1300 increase = 57%

Not one had any maintenance done. Each place was decent and well taken care of.

One Owner told a tenant that someone would be by, right after the rent was increased, for an inspection. It wasn't for maintenance, but to appraise the property or rents. Their rent was increased a second time, with no maintenance. - The Owner would not agree to a long term lease.

Another renter had their rent jacked up right after a new Owner took possession. The new Owner has a history of turning apartments into illegal short term rentals. I expect it to be on airbnb soon.

Anyone at the City listening?

Roll overs in Buellton are starting to be as common as head-ons on the Pass.

And I really wonder why?

Because other than the Three Bridges S-turns south of B-town, the rest of the freeway in and out of Buellton is pretty much wide open and in a straight line.

So how do you flip yourself on a straight flat road?

City Council to Discuss Tenant Righ...

2017-03-19 06:08 PM

I rented for years and years, and kept my rents low by being an ideal tenant. I did as much maintenance and upkeep as I could; I contacted the landlord ONLY if I couldn't fix it, if it had to be fixed repeatedly (roots in the sewage outflow), if it was something that I would want to know about if I was the owner. I now own, but am forced to rent my house for months at a time because I have to work elsewhere for part of the year. How many of you 'rent control' proponents try to think like a property owner, and work with them to keep their hard earned property in good shape, to reduce their workload, expenses, and worries? It is a mutually beneficial contract. Do your part to make it good for the owners too, and the owners will be good to you.

472P: Healthy skepticism is fantastic, but you've got to remember that there are lots and lots (and LOTS) of people in Santa Barbara who actually wanted to paint a blue line around the areas of the city that were supposed to be under water right now. Well that idea was debunked, but still people will believe what they want to believe....it's just that one side always gets angry and tend to boil over when someone disagrees with them....that's one thing everyone can agree on. Personally, I'm worried sick that most people are not prepared for you-know-what....The Big One. Please people, have your emergency supplies ready and make sure your supplies are not so far out of date that when you open them they are unusable.

Renting is a losing proposition. At $1500 a month, a person who rents a one bedroom for 30 years would have paid the same as buying a $200,000 house. The difference is the renter has to keep on paying, while the homeowner's mortgage is paid off. If you rent in Santa Barbara, move to some place where you can afford to buy a house. If you choose to stay, don't ask the taxpayers to subsidize your housing, health care and food when you retire.

The rainforests of Indonesia and other equatorial countries are disappearing at a rapid rate, due in large part to the bulldozing of rainforests for the installation of palm oil plantations.

The real problem getting everyone on board with this is that 40 years ago or so it the climate scientists were all about "global cooling." The pending new Ice Age just didn't develop.....not even close. Then the climate scientists start yabbing about "global warming"....again, not even close to the apocalyptic predictions these folks came up with. Ice caps have not disappeared as Al Gore famously predicted, and all of those low-lying islands are still above water. Okay....then these brainiacs come up with "climate change." Okay....climate changes, and what? What's the next thing for people to worry about. I'll tell you: volcanoes. Look it up....now volcanoes can really disrupt the climate.

Dear #733039P:

Bob had a series of strokes while living in West Palm Beach, FL., prior to his final return to Santa Barbara in 2012. These strokes went undetected until his return to SB and by the time he was able to receive medical treatment, the damage to his brain was irreversible. Bob's brain injury "magnified" his impulsive comments and sometimes he said things that were "inappropriate". Having said this, Bob would give the shirt off of his back for anyone; friend or stranger and was one of the kindest individuals you could ever hope to meet. Nothing is more "obnoxious" than speaking ill of the dead; regardless of how offended you were by his harmless comments. I regret that Bob interrupted your stroll through the Upper Village or even acknowledged your presence for that matter. Shame on you.

I was about to post that Fedmart was not Fedco and was in fact a cheap ripoff attempting to capture Fedco's credibility. Fedco was a great company and the first of the fair pricing large box stores (preceded perhaps by a smaller LA chain known as "WhiteFront" which my parents patronized in the 1950-1960's). Fedco always paid its employees fairly, just as Costco has done to this date. Btw, Price donated big bucks to USC and has the Price School of Public Policy named in recognition of that. Price is the top rated national school in public planning.

GINMAR is making the same mistake I used to make, confusing Fedmart which came about as a big unfocused discount retailer of
cheap stuff through mergers and buyouts with Fedco which was founded by Steve Price (the Price Club guy) as a membership only purveyor of steeply discounted quality merchandise. Initially membership was limited to federal employees and later opened to other government workers and contractors. Membership gimmickery allowed them to get around "fair trade" rules and other cartel pricing rackets. Price Club came much later and eventually merged with Costco with Price remaining grand pubah. Last I checked the old Fedco building was still there in Van Nuys with cars in the parking lot clearl visible from passing Amtrak trains.
