PAMSB "Santa Barbara View Exclusive Update: The family of KEYT news anchor Paula Lopez told the station she was home safe after being missing all day. I would guess the story gets less accurate the further it is reported from Santa Barbara. I have read many local sources today, and they all indicate just one day.

We are pretty foolish yammering on when we really do not know, or even need to know, what happened.
That being said, i will yammer for a moment. The station let Joe Gale go. Anyone think Paula may have been let go, too? People over 40 get fired all the time now for no real reason other than that the corporation which employs them wants to save money by hiring young employees whose salaries and benefits cost less, and younger sells in the eyes of corporate America.
A possibility. It has to be challenging to be a woman on TV nowadays if you are not 27.

All these comments and only 581 mentioned Paula Lopez has a problem with diabetes? Remember when all of us were wondering why she lost so much weight? If Paula didn't get her insulin shot on schedule, that could account for why she was "lost" and perhaps even the person threatening to commit suicide. What a terrible scare for her loved ones. I hope she will be okay. Diabetes is no joke.

We are relieved to see that Paula is home safe. I hope the community will give her and her family some space. She has always been out there helping in the community and she might be happier out of the limelight for awhile - for some needed rest and relaxation. I hope she gets that!

I'm so happy to hear that Paula is safe; not so happy that her private life will be gobbled up, chewed, and spat out for all of us to lap up and masticate again. Paula Lopez is a private person with a public life; perhaps she is owed some 'private' time from the 'public'. I may not particularly care for her as a news anchor; however, I do believe she and her family deserves space and compassion during this time. That's just my thoughts.

I cannot even find the words for this whole thing. I hope if I ever disappear for a few hours (wouldn't that be a treat!), that my husband and children call out all the stops and involve as many people in whatever branch or station in life they happen to be in with helicopters and rescue boats and dogs and anything thing else they have in their arsenal to find me. Oh! But wait. I have to be missing a day or so before they will even talk to my family about a disappearance. I cannot wait to see what they come up with as a explanation for all of this. And yes, they do owe us an explanation. If we weren't supposed to get one, and in the future don't expect to give one they shouldn't have involved even as many of the Edhat community.

I just checked the homepage for USAToday and one of the top stories was, "Santa Barbara news anchor returns home safely." I think our society is doomed. People all over the country are now aware of this story. Which really isn't a story. But, as Sally C says, thanks to SB View and Noozhawk for the great coverage!

I agree with 626 & 692. If it were you or I they would have made our loved one wait the 72, or is it 48 hours to do Anything let alone pull out a helicopter. Glad she is ok, but please enough with the special treatment, let all of us play by the same rules.

Sheriffs and helicopters don't go looking for missing adults unless it's 1) been 24 hours, 2) there is evidence the person is in danger, or 3) they have made credible threats to harm themselves or others.
That being said, chances are authorities had reason to believe she was in danger. Public figure or not, they don't send searchers unless there is reason to worry.
There is a case in the Bay Area of two young adults who went to Peru and took an impromptu boat trip that took them away from computer access. Their families freaked out and launched a media campaign about their "missing loved ones." THAT is an unfounded freak out simply because someone did not log on Facebook one day. Paula Lopez's case is probably different. But beyond that, we should leave her alone, and just be glad if it we were in her shoes, people would care enough to look for us.

Didn't someone mention she's diabetic? Can't something come up when insulin is outa wak and make people act drunk and do weird things. My grandfather in his 70's got really upset one night and went back to the home he watched his wife pass in, banged on the garage door and it was mayhem. Sometimes people just do things Anyways, we aren't hearing the whole story. Judges wife or not they launched a full search for a reason we may never know. The comment that 665 posted is right on! I wasn't an Edhat subscriber until i read that post! That hit home! Whether or not she has a mental health issue..this community needs to be aware of how many people have a mental health issue and struggle daily just to cope and get through the day- including those with drug and alcohol addictions. We need more help, support and more available resources to help our CHILDREN and adults. There really isn't enough out there, you can cry for help so many times and when no one ever really cares to follow up, you tend to loose faith. "Invisible disabilities" are the hardest to explain, accept and live with on an every day basis. Strength to all those who do!

Sure glad to hear she is home safely. I am sure there is a reasonable explanation for being gone for awhile. She may have even left a note, but somehow it got mislaid. She may have gone to visit a friend and then went somewhere, never figuring she had to check in with anybody. She is an adult, after all.

What I don't get is someone heard from her at 9:30 AM and reported her missing at 10:00 AM?? I thought the police tell you to wait 24 hours before the they will be involved. Maybe that is for children only. I am very glad that all is well.

Ok, a few things here. The question still remains: How come a person "missing" for a half an hour requires a full-on search, and news coverage? That's highly unusual. And 656: No, they won't bill Paula for the helicopter. How could they? SHE didn't report herself missing. How is any of the rescue expense her fault? For not answering her phone for a half hour?

If this indeed ends up being “mental issues”, it makes me so sad to think the general public would be more compassionate and sympathetic if it was a dramatic bad fight with her husband. The truth of “mental issues” is just so uncomfortable. For those truly inflicted, hope seems as close as another galaxy… very far, far away and so many light years away the effort is just un-reachable and why risk being disappointed again.

670, she doesn't owe the public anything. Being a public figure doesn't mean she owes people an explanation for a private matter. If someone reported a missing person who had, let's say for argument's sake, threatened their own life, you bet more than a BOL would be issued. People have a right to privacy no matter who they are. Medical conditions, psychological conditions...anything. That's private stuff.

This became no longer a family matter when public resources were deployed. She owes the public an explanation (if it were a medical issue, etc.) or reimbursement (if it were something else). Furthering the point, all these resources were deployed shortly after she didn't show up. For the rest of us minions, they wouldn't even take a report for 24 hours, and then only a BOL would be issued.

I am very happy she has come home. But, honestly, I am going to tell my husband that if I take off for a day, I would prefer that he not call the helicopters and massive search parties. Sometimes one just likes to have some alone time to sort things out, especially if there has been a quarrel or disappointment.

I genuinely hope for Ms. Lopez's sake and for her family's sake that this was a misunderstanding and/or miscommunication. On the other hand, if Ms. Lopez has a mental illness and her family feared for her safety, it would be wonderful for the mental health awareness cause if she could go public. This takes a great deal of courage and support, which may be beyond her capacity at this time. I say this with the greatest compassion for her and her family. Much as some would feel this is a private matter, some of us who know the torture and anguish of mental illness either in ourselves or in loved ones and the stigmas attached would welcome more attention to the many faces of mental illness to break down stigmas and barriers. Invisible disabilities are the hardest to explain and accept. Regardless of the situation, I truly wish Ms. Lopez and her family all the best as they are reunited tonight.

I'm glad to hear she has been found. I just tuned into the KEYT news tonight around 6.35 pm (instead of CNN) and there was no mention of her being found. Maybe I missed the beginning of the news segment. I still don't understand why a person who is missing less than 24 hours is reported missing?

A lot of people noticed that one night when she seemed out of it, or on something during the news. Not saying she was, just that it was very noticeable and commented about. Glad to hear she's okay. 634, it's not being insensitive, it's commenting on fact. It very well could've been diabetes related, but all anyone is saying is that she seemed very odd on air recently at least once.

What was that all about? She talks to her family at 9:30 AM and is reported missing at 10:00 AM. The Sheriff's Department conducts a massive search operation including the use of a very expensive helicopter. Then, around 6:15 PM she shows up at home. The taxpayers deserve some answers since that search cost thousands of taxpayer dollars.

I attended the Middle School in the early 90s and it was a great experience. I think is an incorrect to say that the classes are taught in a "non-traditional" or "out-of-the-box" format: this is a real school with all of the regular subjects, taught every bit as well as those one would get at a regular junior high school. The main difference is that at the middle school you are—and you come to realize this—a part of a community, and that this means that you have responsibilities to that community, and to the world at large. Also, biking, backpacking, the channel islands, real science projects, real theater, gardening, photography, job weeks, the great teachers and staff, etc. etc.—the "extras" woven into the education make for an incredible tapestry of personal growth. Students will keep many of the friends—and skills—that they make here for their whole lives.

Next time that I'm going really slowly on a street with sidewalks like Hollister Ave, I don't want to hear any honking behind me. I can't look at the sidewalks on both sides of the street, behind and betwen parked cars on both sides of the street, AND avoid oncoming traffic when driving over 25mph. If it's my responsibility to avoid every pedestrian that thinks its ok to wander cluelessly across the street, then I'm going to drive slowly enough to see them and stop before hitting them. Don't honk! It's just somebody being responsible for the health and welfare of pedestrians everywhere.

The authorities will begin to look for an at-risk missing adult right away, -581, e.g., if the missing adult has dementia, is suicidal or needs medication [whatever category makes the person at-risk], they'll begin looking fast. The fact that THIS particular missing woman is married to a prominent local official would also likely result in fast action by the Sheriff's Department, too. I hope she's found safe and well.

I was there. Dp's kids were way younger than the rest, or so it seemed. They were definitely not the robotics team. Plus, the contest had a certain element of luck involved - whoever was farthest along when time was up was the winner. Nobody actually made an engine that worked. Raytheon is very nice to spend money on schools in the area. Sure they gave money to DP but some of the graduates of the engineering academy will go on to work at Raytheon after college so it's a win-win. Recruiting engineering talent is expensive and not easy. That money is earmarked for charity and would never be spent on salaries anyway. Besides, supporting the schools is the right thing to do.

@356 I don't mean to make it sound like I'm critizing you..I am wacked myself..I get accused of it alot..The only time I have ever heard voices except for the espn stuff is when I mix alcohol with pot, that is the only time. So I don't drink..There was some experiences with LSD acouple times back in the 70's and 90's..I'm actually a depressive, I also have PTSD from being molested and raped and paying acouple of em back..Life is hard it aien't easy especally when your down with this stuff..I have nothing matieral I can't save money I get really depressed sometimes and suicides a passing though because I'm a cursed catholic. That is why I'm always joking around because when I start wallowing things get really bad. Mental Health professionals can't do nothing to remove my pain. One atavin per day and a bowl or two of weed make my life alittle bearable. I'm sorry you have trouble too life aien't easy..

Another reminder that all of our schools have great potential. I have a kid going to San Marcos next year and I'm happy to learn that they competed so well in this. Too bad more people are not as perceptive and open minded as Redcreek and CRKLine. Old Town is a pretty great place to live, work & play unless one prefers oxnard/orange county/Towbes style beige stucco, a chain store/fast food on every corner and oleanders everywhere. Come out here, walk around, there's a lot going on. True parking bites, the sheriff dept is selective & uniformly unpleasant and it's tough to cross Hollister but overall it is a fine little neighborhood.

235: If you reread the first part of my comment, I stated that I feel the lawsuit is petty. She should not have sued, as it only removes money. That being said, it is not permissible for the government to simply shrug off damages in roadways that cause significant hazards. You can't simply walk your car around potholes, bumps, cracks, rocks, etc. It's as dangerous for a car as a bicycle, and is something that should be addressed, not simply "known".

This seems to happen alot--fireplace ashes, or coal from a BBQ. Why don't people leave them in the fireplace or BBQ until they're cool? or put in a metal pail or trash can. I had a friend who put coals from the previous night's BBQ in a bag in the garage. The garage caught on fire the next afternoon. Why they didn't just leave them in the BBQ I don't know.

SBMS Alum class of 2002, i went there all four years. it does build charactor, got me to be a bit more outgoing....some of the kids were nice but i did get picked on. it was fun i learned new skills although did discover knee issues when riding bikes. by the 4th year i was ready to move on and start my next chapter. its a good school.

355 has some good points. While for some people commuting makes sense for some others ... not so much. Something that many commuters forget to factor in is the cost of gas, wear and tear, and the time you spend. My time is worth a lot to me. If you do some simple math, in the long run commuting can easily cost more. Being conservative; Lets assume a 48 week work year after vacation, sick days, and holidays. Lets say the drive from ventura is an additional 30 miles than the drive from a local residence. 60 miles per day. Lets say they car you drive gets 30mpg Lets average $0.15 per mile wear and tear Factoring traffic you spend 45 minutes each way or 1.5 hrs per day. Lets assume your time is worth $15 an hour. 48 * 5 = 240 days 60mi / 30mpg = 2 gallons = $9
60mi * $.15 wear and tear = $9
1.5hrs * $15 cost of time = $22.50 =$40.50 per day * 240 days = $9,720.00 per year. And if you are house shopping, in 30 years you will spend $291,600.00.

307P: "you're at just as much fault as the driver who hits you" is completely false. The Vehicle Code gives the right of way to pedestrians. Stop trying to rewrite the law You might have a point if the pedestrians getting hit by cars were popping out from between vehicles. bushes, crossing red lights, etc. But that's not what is happening. The pedestrians being hit are in crosswalks, and completely visible, but the cars are going to fast or being too careless to stop in time. If you're driving and can't see around a corner, you need to SLOW DOWN!!! Here's an excerpt from the CA Driver's Handbook for your education: "At intersections without "STOP" or "YIELD" signs, slow down and be ready to stop. Yield to traffic and pedestrians already in the intersection or just entering the intersection. Also, yield to the vehicle or bicycle that arrives first, or to the vehicle or bicycle on your right if it reaches the intersection at the same time as you."

I'm an SBMS alum class of 2003. I can honestly say the school changed my life, and really did help me become who I am today. The teachers gave me a love of learning, and my best friends today are my best friends from middle school. The SMBS experience gave me the courage and self confidence to work my way to where I am today, a world wide traveler, outdoor enthusiast, college graduate, and about to start medical school in a few months. I wouldn't trade having gone to middle school for anything.
Yeah, it's got character, nobody is perfect, but this school goes out of it's way to celebrate differences. Hope this helps your decision!

I live 4 blocks away from Pesetas. Our quiet and hidden little neighborhood is getting scarier and scarier. We have drug bums living along the 101 in the bushes and walking along Calle Real all day, from HiTime and more bushes there. Now we have a neighbor who drives drunk and was involved in beating an old lady after tagging, the incident when the UPS driver got involved to save the lady. Nice neighbors.

470 - The math shows that if you commute from Ventura to Goleta every day, and account for your time being worth a min of $10 an hour. One would spend between $4000-8000 a year just on the commute. ($10 an hour is pretty low) I don't think people calculate the true costs of a 45 mile commute. If they did they'd realize that they may not be saving any money and certainly dont save time. You can always make more money, however you cannot make more time... This is just an observation I simply wonder why people make choices that are not always in their best interest. I understand that circumstances are unique for each person but I also dont think people look at the bigger picture when making choices.

Dig a big moat around the property. Fill the moat with poop eating alligators (just in case). Install motion sensing sound cannons around the perimeter. Hire mercenaries to snipe loperamide pills into the mouths of any approaching dogs. Train a flock of non-migratory parrots to alert the mercenaries. That should help. You're welcome.

We never watch sports (other than the Olympics), nor shopping, nor Spanish, but those constitute half of the "basic" channels we get. The whole industry needs changing, and unbundling is the first step to get there.

Verifying these theories of string theory and of multiverses both seem beyond our current measurement abilities. But Greene is actively looking for signals that may be a result of universes interacting with each other. So it is not all speculation. It is true that his publications peaked in the late 1990s. It's a foolish and impractical law. A car cannot stop as easily as a person, and it's a lot easier for a ped to see a car than it is for a motorist to see a person, esp if one's eyes are on the road ahead. I wonder if a study has ever been done comparing motorists or pedestrians having the right of way. I've never understood the logic of CA law.

I graduated SBMS in 1992. It was an educational experience that surpassed all others. It was one one of the best academic experiences that I had in my educational career. It was one of the few times in my school experience that I was challenged 100% and it was welcomed to rise up and challenge back, even as a girl. The trips tought me a self independence that continues to reward me as an adult. My fellow alumni are a network closer than any Greek house, as I travel the country and the world, I always have a fellow middle schooler to call upon. My SBMS alumni have been the network of support through the tough challenges that only adulthood brings. My skillset of traveling and treading lightly continue to reward me as I journey forward. If I was to have a child I can only imagine giving them the gift and investment of SBMS.

But, cautious drivers are not to be blamed when pedestrians pop out from in between cars, from behind a bush, crossing on a red light, etc.... You can't be at fault for colliding with someone you had no chance to stop for. Not all drivers are out there trying to mow people down, ok?

I am just amazed at how people have the stomach to pick up those big dog poops. I have to admire anyone who can even do that. I don't blame them for not wanting to carry the poop bag all over the neighborhood on their walk....they stink, even in the bag, but have to admit it is rather rude to leave them on someone's curb or yard. Guess it's better than leaving the original mess for the homeowner to clean up. How about putting a cute little bucket labeled "Dispose of doggie bags here" and then you only have to dump it in your garbage can weekly....yuck.

307P: Crossing where there aren't blind corners or hills isn't always possible. What if you live on a hill or blind corner with no sidewalks? Does that mean you're never allowed to leave the house? What if you're at the bottom of a hill and need to cross? Are you supposed to walk to the top of the hill cross the street, then walk down the hill again? What if you wait for the street to clear before crossing, but one turns the corner and starts speeding towards you when you're in the middle of the street? Are you suddenly supposed to be able to levitate to get out of their way? Just stop with all of the bad excuses already. Most of the pedestrians that are getting hit are doing nothing wrong and are being cautious when they cross. Pedestrians don't have special psychic powers to predict whether there are reckless, lawbreaking drivers nearby. Just drive the speed limit, and yield to pedestrians, and stop making excuses.

Cable, gas, electric are utilities that we do not allow to have competition. States such as Texas do allow electric competition and therefore have lower rates as various companies compete for the individuals business. All of the competitors use the same electric lines. They did not have to build out separate power lines. Our government could allow competition among utilities such as cable, electric, etc. but refuses to do so. These are the government representatives we continue to elect.

Vehicle/pedestrian collisions are the cause of either of two parts 1) driver not paying attention and/or 2) pedestrian not paying attention. There are jerks behind the wheel and there are jerks out on foot.... it's just too bad that jerks aren't colliding with other jerks and canceling each other out.

OP, in regards to your question about the mindset of people that would behave in this way- I think it's the same thing that's been on several threads; a deeply engrained belief of self-entitlement. It's very much the same as leaving behind soiled baby diapers in a park. It's ignorant and doesn't belong in today's society. The nearly zero chance that there will be any consequences make leaving it for others to enjoy doesn't help. What I've personally witnessed in regards to dog owners and their own behavior when it comes to their dogs is nothing less than atrocious (and, I'm being really diplomatic). Animal feces is a health hazard. If I were to judge by the home in which they either rent or own, or their mode of dress when walking their dogs (not K-Mart sweats, off-brand shoes or Rite-Aid shades), I would say that many of these criminals probably already understand this hard fact. There is a gap between what these people know and what they're practicing. I used to be friends with someone for years that worked in the medical field. She threw trash out the window while driving, left dirty diapers everywhere, cleared her throat and spat in public. She also would sneak her dog into restaurants. She didn't pick up after her dog, either. Her reply to a suggestion to do so was "_ _ _ _ them if they can't take a joke".

Good for our justice system. Someone who would do that to their TWO YEAR OLD should be punished SEVERLY. IF only there was a way to make sure she never has the responsibility of caring for a young child's welfare again... too bad sterilization is not legal. I hope that they never ever parole her. Hopefully the family that adopted the young child can help set right in time what damage horrible abuse had done in the past to this poor child. Who knows what other awful abuses this wretched woman ( the mother) inflicted upon this child that we do not know of in the past.

I've noticed another problem:
On one way streets when I've stopped for a waiting pedestrian at the curb to allow them to cross and the lane next to me is vacant, inevitably a car comes barreling down the "vacant" lane and almost mows the pedestrian over. This has happened to me as a pedestrian as well.
As a driver, what else can we do to alert the speeding, distracted drivers next to us? Tap the brakes? Use hazard lights?

to comment 9355. We need to remember that not everyone is blessed enough to be able to work AND live in Santa Barbara or Goleta ( whichever the case may be). Some people can only afford to live in Ventura even if they work in Goleta. She felt bad after making a right on red and crossing two lanes and knocking me right out of the lane I was on. I feel worse. She was in a hurry and almost carelessly took my life. You bet I'm mad! Hot (stinking) topic... For the OP, a small sign that says, "please take your dog poop bags with you" may be enough to get most people to be respectful. Start there and if it doesn't work go to a stronger message. Cats owners may not be required to pick up, but it is a problem for us. The cats leave presents in our yard, which my dog finds and eats. Yes, disgusting! We can't let our own dog loose in parts of our own yard because of the cat deposits. Wish we could do something about that.... I don't mind a bag left "temporarily", but a lot of people do forget to pick up on their way back. Please don't use other people's trash can because dog poop in a bag is still very stinky. Maybe not a problem if the trash can owner has a dog, but for non-dog owners it is something they shouldn't have to deal with. Thanks all for being good citizens. We're all in this world together.

Our daughter went to SBMS and we feel it was an investment in our child. SBMS is a family experience, too, and a wonderful community. The school is not just academic; it opens the world to the kids. At SBMS, our daughter was able to step out of the bounds of adolescent “it’s all about me,” and become globally conscious. Not a terribly athletic child when she got there, she has since biked all over the world. Transition to a local high school was fine and she was in the top of her class. She went on to an Ivy League college and is now entering medical school. Oh, and 150, she has also been gainfully employed since 9th grade. The price tag may be high, but it is an investment. In your child. And I understand they have a very good financial aid program now.

I walk my dogs at Hendry's fairly often. I carry several bags for dog waste, but I also carry a bigger bag such as a shopping bag made of cloth. I carry everything in this bag, even other peoples used bags. When I get back to the parking lot, I dispose of them all.
I too don't understand why people bag them and leave them to pick up later.

I have people throw their dog $hit in my trash can after it is picked up but before I can bring up the can. Drives me CRAZY!!! That warm crap sits at the bottom of the can for a full week and stinks up the entire back yard. A few bags have stuck to the bottom. So pi$$ed at these dog owners.

Changing diapers only lasts a couple years, a dog pumps and poops for 20 years. OMG I can't even imagine the agony of having to scoop up these steaming piles every single day of my life!, plastic or no plastic! There's got to be a better way! Well, actually, there is! Get a cat or a horse! You can't find, because cats bury it because they have some class, so therefore can't pick up, cat poop. And horse poop, it's obvious this is a Pygmalion project and impractical without a tractor, wheelbarrow or some other cumbersome conveyance.

regardless of circustances behind this tragic action, someoe has lost their life, parents lost a child sibling lost a brother, family and friends are grieving. i have lost 2 nephews due to being shot one which is unsolved but yes had trouble in the past, but at the time they were killed they were in school, clean and sober, but no one can understand what kind of person can take anothers life.. not realizing that when caught they themselves have lost theirs.. so why cant people stop being judgmental and stop all the mean comments. because one day you may lose someone in a way that shouldve not happened.. prayers to the family of the victim and for the family/families of the person that did this awful act..

I carry my poop bags until there is a public trash in which to deposit it. Don't understand the people who leave the bag. I came upon this incident in my vehicle just minutes, if not seconds after it had happened. The man was indeed crossing in the crosswalk, witnesses were saying he had the right away. The driver was saying he didn't see him and you could tell he felt horrible. The man in the crosswalk is going to need some medical attention for sure but was able to talk on the phone with his wife.

My years at SBMS were by far the most formative of my life. During years that most kids feel awkward, my classmates and I became closer through our unique experiences and common respect for knowledge and diversity. I’ve witnessed new high school and college acquaintances learn the same lessons about life that I had the fortune to learn while at SBMS. As a self-declared overachiever, I was at the top of my SBMS class. I also graduated from the top of my class at a prestigious private high school and attended an Ivy League university. Clearly SBMS prepares you for the future. I would say that there is a certain type of kid that might not love it here. If you're a family that believes in treating others with kindness, your kids will thrive. There are kids who think it's not cool to be accepting, so they probably won't enjoy SBMS. Or they'll attend the school grudgingly, and years later wish they had appreciated what they had at the time.

This transferring took place without warning to the receiving parish/school, and THAT was the basis for the $28 MILLION dollar settlement. So, to say that other schools were not part of this scandal is woefully naive; they were. Furthermore, because the statute of limitations had expired, none of the offending priests and/ or brothers were prosecuted criminally, or made to register as sex offenders. Remember when you were picking out a pre-school for your kid? I do, and the best piece of advice I got was to trust my instincts. I did, and it worked out well. When your child gets to be in 6th and 7th grade, my experience is that you can trust their instincts; they know which school feels right to them. That's how our two daughters ended up at Middle School. They made the decision, and we, as a family, have made the economic trade-offs necessary to support them. No regrets. It's never been easy to be in junior high, but for some kids, like our daughters, SBMS makes the mostly difficult miracle of adolescent transformation into a celebrated, magical transition.

While pedestrians can wait for the cars they can see, we can't hold them responsible for the cars they can't see, or cars that are so far away (yet speeding so fast) that there is no way for them to anticipate that the car will be at the intersection before they make it all the way across. If you get actual paper bills from them then you would have seen a statement they sent out 2 months ago that stated they were going to raise their rates due to recent lease, carrier and transmission increases from their vendors. Their rates are high but there are other companies out there that charge more. I pay $136 a month for pretty much everything TV related. A friend of mine who lives in metro IL pays $185 for the same services. She has a choice between 3 cable companies there and chose the cheapest (none of them are COX btw). It is what it is. I'll call them and "negotiate" when I get my next bill - they always give you a better deal and you can usually stay with it for a while. I like TV...I am willing to pay for it. If you don't like it, don't look at it - Cox's situation will keep rolling.

I was recently driving up Ontare and saw two women walking with a large dog in tow. The dog had to do it's thing and proceeded to stop and poop in the front yard of the house they were passing. The owner yanked the leash of the dog pooping (rude in it's own right) and despite having empty poop bags in her hand, looked around and when she saw that no one was watching, ignored the poopy pile and continued on. I was disgusted by her rude behavior/laziness. Apparently she was carrying bags just to make it seem like she was willing to be responsible/respectful.

OP-there's a guy who used to trot through my neighborhood with his big hound and did that. It was nasty. It went on for a while. I thought I was the only one who saw it but no, my next door neighbor who yells at everyone (his is super agro-always angry but not a bad guy) caught him one morning and oh man, that guy never showed his face in our hood again. The world is full of inconsiderate people who have no sense of responsibility. I don't advocate a scream-a-thon but maybe you should leave a note in the deposit area or, if you're feeling brave, just talk to him straight out. A lot of times people get cowed by confrontation. Congrats to San Marcos students! We've got some awesome kids in our high schools and it's great to have local high tech companies like Raytheon motivating them. Stirling engines were an excellent choice for this competition.

I called to cancel my subscription a couple of days ago but they hooked me back in with discounts and a 'lock' on my current rate. There is some sort of obligation that goes with the lock that I'm not yet familiar with. I have to decide before I pay my next bill. The rate increase is primarily due to the Laker channel lease whether or not you choose to watch it.

I live downtown, work downtown, drive downtown and walk downtown...here's what I know for a fact. As a pedestrian or a driver you may have the right of way but if you're smart you'll never assume everyone knows that. Just today I was driving on Victoria Street and the light turned green at the State St. intersection when I was a half a block away. I proceeded and when I was nearly at the intersection, a ped on her cell phone, Starbucks in had stepped into the cross walk right in front of me and looked at me sharply when I nearly hit her even though she was crossing on a red light. Conversley, I have stepped into crosswalks near the courthouse many times and have nearly been hit by cars even though I made eye contact with them before entering the crosswalk. The moral...DRIVE AND WALK DEFENSIVLEY!

OP - Good luck. It's a very important decision and you are wise to do the legwork and try to get the scoop on the schools you are considering. We moved and took on a big mortgage and property tax bill to get into the Hope Elementary District. Some private schools, like Marymount and Laguna, do offer scholarships. We had a kinder at Marymount and they took him to catholic mass a few times without warning us. We are agnostic and it seemed contrary to the "world religion" introduction we got. Class size is important, but the indivdual challenges and parents in the class are also important, as well as the control and quailty of the teacher. At both private and public, the #s are totally subject to change from year to year. I would defintely ask about any commitments to a particular class maximum. I would also inquire about whether standardized test result info is released for private students, so you can measure performance.

Contact(s): Andrew Madsen Los Padres National Forest officials today announced plans to conduct a series of prescribed burn projects over the next several months to eliminate piled brush and mechanically treated vegetation on the Santa Lucia Ranger District. This process will involve crews burning piles of vegetation in order to remove hazardous fuel loads and improve the overall health of the forest. The project will commence when weather conditions and air quality are suitable for safely burning these fuels. The brush was masticated and piled during thinning projects on the Figueroa Mountain area. The burn projects will be conducted at a number of different sites in and around the Figueroa Mountain Recreational Area located a few miles northwest of the community of Los Olivos. Burning will begin this week. If you have questions about the projects, please contact Santa Lucia Fire Management Officer Jim Smith at (805) 925-9538.

Look up "Google forms". It is free, you can create a template with specific questions (name/contact info/etc. in your case). You can send out the link to the form, people fill it out, and then Google automatically compiles all the results in a spreadsheet. Then you can use some sort of randomization software to pick the winners, even just numbering the entries and using a random number generator (there are tons of free websites that do this, or just use excel). That's how I would do it!

352: Good point. Pedestrians need to look for approaching speeding cars before stepping off the curb. They're not exceeding the speed of light - they're visible. Roger's got it right, of course, there are enough of these accidents that we're going to have to schedule them in advance to make sure emergency crews aren't double-booked responding to them, and expecting drivers to avoid all pedestrians at all times is providing us with more and more injured or dead pedestrians. Einstein's definition of insanity was repeating the same action indefinitely and expecting a different result. His death wasn't caused by stepping off the curb in front of a truck, like Pierre Curie's.The issue isn't recognizing the way things should be, it's acknowledging the ways things are to keep people from being injured or killed.

I'm an alumni of SBMS, and my child is only 4 years old... but we already know - our money is being saved for SBMS. It is by far and away the most important years of your kids transition to adulthood and I would trust no one else more than I would the teachers and the supportive nature of SBMS. There is a culture of respect and responsibility there that would help any child blossom and thrive. If you've gone to the school, seen the work they do... I can't imagine having any doubts.

I graduated from SBMS in the 90s, and my time there ranks among some of my greatest experiences. Those junior high school years are some of the most formative, and my time at SBMS was fundamental to the person I am today. The teachers, staff, and school culture are supportive, motivating, healthy, challenging, inspiring, memorable, and empowering. My brother also graduated from SBMS, my father participated in several bike trips. It's a family experience, and an invaluable one. I live on the east coast now, graduated from a prestigious four year university, and am a successful small business owner. I remain in contact with SBMS - teachers, staff, and alums, and count myself extraordinarily fortunate to have gone there. Clearly, I recommend the school. I'd go again, if I could. :)

People, There is no such thing as Direct competition when it comes to regular cable tv service. In every city across the us the local cable companies own the lines that they transmit there programming on. There is no way another company is going to set up there own lines and broadcast. It is virtually and financially impossible. Cox Communications does have competition, DirecTV, & Dish Network. Those are your choices here in Santa Barbara. If you want a different Cable TV provider besides satellite you could move to LA and Get Time Warner or move to Lompoc and get Comcast. All of your cable companies lease the space from the power company to run their lines on their poles. Everyone is upgrading to fiber and these things cost money. If you don't like how much you are paying for TV then don't subscribe to the service. BTW don't tell me i don't know what i am talking about I have been in this industry for 10 years.

16P here crkline please see post by 286P - thats me as well. The system didn't not recognize the same number with my post. Long story short- I run, dog poops, I pick up put in bag, hide in bush, then pick back upon way home and dispose of it properly inmy own trash can. Not leaving my dogs mess, not leaving it accessible to kids and not being rude.

As a dog owner this practice makes zero sense to me and it ticks me off, I would never leave my dog's used bag sitting on the sidewalk/trail. As we are usually headed to a park, I carry the bag(s) with me until we reach a park with a public trash can or we get home. You other owners that leave bags behind make the rest of us look bad, I don't care if you're out for a run or you're on your way to read to the blind, carry your bags until you find a trash can or leave your dog at home.

When I saw a picture of the this young guy getting loaded into the ambulence, he was wearing black king loop low cut converse, which is very popular with gang members. Paul Franz Construction bought it out of bankruptcy after SB's old friend Bernie Rosenson (the guy who bought and ran Wine Cask into the ground) ran that other local treasure into the ground as well. They've been refurbishing it, but of course these days you can't just clean it up, they had to add an elevator, make everything ADA accessible and bend over for a bunch of other SB County building codes. Radius has it listed for lease, but as usual its overpriced for Summerland and its just sitting there vacant.

322P, interestingly enough, by law cats are considered "free spirits" and owners are NOT responsible for their actions. Dogs do not fall under this category, owners are responsible. I'm guessing because they are much, much easier to train.

16P - Two wrongs, leaving horse and dog waste uncollected, do not make a right. If you take the time to hide your dog's waste, why not just pick it up and take it home? Leaving the waste uncollected attracts flies, is smelly, and overburdens the area with too much waste.

They want way, way way too much money for the building and the location. We'll see what comes in (probably a law firm) I always wonder why do people are willing to commute 45miles each way. 90 miles a day x 5 days = 450mi a week spent driving to and from work.
$4.50 a gallon x 30 mpg = approx. $3500 a year on gas alone + wear and tear and other costs.

Approx 10 hours a week x 50 = 500 hours a year spent commuting. Crazy.

This was reported at 11:14 am on a bright and sunny day. I'm sure the pedestrian could be SEEN, but one has to wonder if the driver was LOOKING? Way to try to shift the blame Lizbet, but it's almost always the DRIVERS responsibility to yield to pedestrians. Stop ASSUMING the pedestrian didn't look first -- looking both ways and making sure there are no cars around won't protect the pedestrian when you are SPEEDING through the crosswalk they're already in.

It's a monopoly that is sanctioned by the city -- they were paid off as part of the deal. That's why we don't have FiOS fiber optic internet service. I don't know when this monopoly will end. I tried DISH satellite, but they kept raising prices also. Now I have an antenna, one time cost of about $150 to buy the antenna and digital converter pole, clamps, and wire. I get four KCET channels, two NBC, two ABC, and three KOCE (PBS) channels. They are all digital. The main ones come in at 720p or 1080p digital, older reruns are at 480p.

I'm at a loss as to why the OP considers simply being a pedestrian, or waiting at a curb, makes one a jaywalker. If the OP considers waiting on a curb to be dangerous behavior simply because a car might stop for you and then be rear-ended, I wonder what the OP would have people do instead.

You miss a lot of first run and live events, but if you can wait you can see most of that stuff for the cost of an internet connection. I pay Verizon $25/mo to be able to stream low-def TV programs. If I could find a hi speed internet connection that didn't involve cox I would get that and switch to Netflix instead of using blockbuster. I can watch NFL games through my laptop. Not missing much as far as I can tell.

Oh and further more, just out of the left of the first picture is a creek that is totally been plugged up for a couple years. I will bet there were fish in it at one time, perhaps even steelhead. It has been dammed up further upstream by a reservoir for some ranch. This would be part of the reason the sand is disappearing from in front of the Bacara, Haskells, and many of the other beaches. Something needs to be done about this. Maybe someone should fly upstream?

I think it completely rude to leave your dog's poop in another's trash can because it's convenient for you. May I bring my trash to your house on my way home from hiking because our trash is full and it's convenient for me? And leaving it roadside, parkside or trailside for others to have to throw away for you is even worse. You take the poop with you and dispose of it in a city/county waste can or at YOUR home. Period. Get some manners.

I know three people who were injured there on road bikes. It is slick as ice, dry or wet. However, nobody crashes there until they try to lean and turn after the crossing. All of them had the sense to say afterwards, "what a stupid thing to do" and they never crashed there again. Not this lady! Likely nothing in her life was ever her fault. Weak! There's 2.9 million less dollars for things that matter.

This happens at my house too. If I see someone that looks like they might do this, my presence is enough to get them to take the bag with them. If someone doesn't look like they have a bag, asking them if they need a bag is enough to get them to pick it up. But when I'm not home all bets are off. I have dogs and take my bags with me back to my garbage can, unless I know the trash is coming the next day and my neighbors' cans are already out on the curb. Another thing that happens is I have my green waste can in my front yard and people will leave their bags in it. As far as I know, dog poop is not considered green waste.

Pedestrians need to make sure they are SEEN before stepping in front of a moving vehicle. Dark clothes at dusk, moving from shadow to light, parked cars, all of these can affect even a careful driver's ability to see. As a ped, even if I have the LEGAL right of way, I don't assume the driver has seen me or will stop. As a driver, I'm careful, but please don't step out in front of me ASSUMING I've seen you.

309 - wow. Kind of harsh, huh? And why on earth would you feel safer? There was a murder and then 2 stabbings all within a week in SB (not to mention the robberies). All 3 of these violent, vicious crimes have gone on without any arrests made! That's at least 3 armed and dangerous criminals running around town right now. I, for one, fell FAR less safe in my hometown than I ever did before.

As soon as Time Warner and Comcast get invited to the party of hard wire cable delivery service, then you might have an argument. DirecTV does not function on the same playing field and has several restrictions...... On another note, The Lakers are adding $5 and Cox is pushing that through. Second, be on the lookout for the New Cox Mercedes Vans that are now being implemented to replace the open trucks. Cox is so embarrassed by their moxy that they're removing the famous Mercedes emblems from all the vans.

As for putting your poop bag in other homeowners' trash cans: on non-pickup days our can is stored by our garage/workshop. We'd really rather the can not smell of dog poop. Please take your poop to your own can.

My hair is thinning gradually and I hope that it will stop, because I have little left to lose. I've put it down to a poorly operating thyroid, for which I take medication. Trying to change my diet and such hasn't helped. My NP says it 'comes with age'. Gee thanks.
I hope you can find a local support group, which doesn't have to be formal, just people reaching out and sharing, even over the Net. Best wishes to you!

We had a German Shepherd Dog that made, as you might imagine, fairly large "gifts" for all to admire. Early on we designated a certain part of our back yard for these gifts and trained her to go there exclusively. In our residential neighborhood where everyone has a backyard, a number of folks still let their dogs crap on our lawn. They usually pick it up but sometimes not. I have ingratiated myself with several of them by confronting them outright, "Excuse me - do you let your dog crap on your own front lawn? No? Then please don't let it crap on mine, thank you. Next time there will be a liberal sprinkling of cayenne pepper and chili powder around the area." I'm known as a bastard around the neighborhood but it works.

Game theory this is Nash Equilibribium. There are two players; dog owner/lawn owner. Outcomes: 1) No Poo/No bag. 2) No Poo/Bag 3) Poo/Bag. 4) Poo/No Bag. Equilibrium is at 2) No Poo/Bag because there is no offense yet owner is prepared. Do to lack of conciquence, opt. 4 occurs quite often because dog can poo and ownder has no payoff to pick it up or have a bag. If there were a fine, a brow-beating or perhaps a forced poo hotdog eating contest, we'd see a drastic reduction in offesive and rude poo ignorance.

I have an universal alopecia since I was 21 years old. If you are luck and your hair that is left is strong you can go with extensions but your demetoloist will tell its not a great option. You can go onto the site www.baldgirlsdolunch.com they have a lot of good information for you. I wish you good luck. For me since I have little to no hair wigs are the only option, there is a company called Peggy knight who does vacuum wigs that allows you to be free of taking it off and can wash and wear it as you please for about 6 to 9 months but its expensive. Another company sells the Hugger wig look it up online or call then at 1-800-434-4552. Happy hunting and let me know how it goes.

368P here. Good to know this is no longer the norm. It has been about 30 years since I needed an antiques appraisal and all the big firms I contacted in SF wanted a percentage. I wondered about the ethics of that too, but was told at the time by several (3-4) that this was the norm. I ended up keeping my piece, as it had a family connection.

I can personally say that when I'm out running with my dog and she goes somewhere I pick up the poop leave the bag there and then come back on way home to retrieve it. But someone might not see me do that and assume I'm being rude.

Take pictures. Let them see you taking pictures of them and follow them home taking pictures of them going into their home. Record everything as though building a case for legal action. That should get their attention. It's all about accountability. Retribution may feel good for a second but it just escalates wrong doing so don't try to get even just hold them accountable.

This is truely a strange phenomenom. I live by Jesusita trail and the hikers routinely leave their poop bags at our gate along our private road that intersects the trail. It is very annoying, I just can't understand the logic. Or lack there of... I guess these are also the same type of folks that like to trespass on our private road as opposed to staying on the trail, and proceed to give us stink eye because we are going too fast while they happily trespass along with their dogs off-leash.

these are people of the worst kind! the logic behind this sooooo incredibly flawed that it boils my blood. they are basically taking something that would decompose on its own fairly quickly and placing it into something that is going to take years to break down and just tossing it aside. I would much rather them just leave it than put it in a plastic bag and not dispose of it properly. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just leave it if you cant throw it away after bagging it

I took a rare occasion to cross State near the Art Museum and was harassed quite nastily by a cop having coffee @ Pete's. I explained that I only did it because it was raining and there was not a single car to be seen in either direction nor at the corners. He said I was lucky he didn't feel like giving me a ticket :( My rule of thumb re: peds wanting to cross the street when I'm driving is that I will always give them the right of way as long as they give me "eye contact" so I know what it is they want. Anyone looking at the ground or their cell phone will be left waiting. I'M NOT A MIND-READER, PEOPLE !

Our son flourished at SBMS, enjoyed the teachers, friends he made, especially the grueling bike trips where everyone encourages everyone. Went on to public high school, excelled academically where his formation at SBMS served him well: kept the close friendships from SBMS, graduated college with high honors and, contrary to what 150 implies about SBMS grads not working, has been self supporting via work since college as are his friends. It is unfortunate that some have had bad experiences with "rich kids" and that SBMS is not more diverse. Also unfortunate that public schools for Jr. High age do not offer more team and character-building activities where everyone is involved together, not just a few. also unfortunate in public school (which was not tolerated at SBMS) was lots of bullying, often vicious, as my son discovered when he stuck up for those bullied in high school.That did not mean he totally put down the public school. Go observe a few times SBMS to see what it's like, pros & cons.

The meadow and cove in the first photo were my favorite place to sit and reflect when I was younger. Before that eyesore of the Bacara and subsequent rape and pilage of that section of coastline. The meadow was much smaller then ( beferoe the falling of the euc's) and the stream wasn't "polluted". After a big rain it would blow out a nice sandbar. Lots of driftwood would collect in the the cove and there was usually some kind of lean-to or beach shack constructed from it.
Spent many quiet afternoons enjoying the serenity at the 'Wood, sitting by a nice fire.
Paradise lost.

I can sit on my covered porch and see dogs doing their business on my grass without them necessarily seeing me so one day I hope to catch the repeat offender (must be a huge dog since it leaves a huge pile), take the owners' picture, give them a piece of my mind and then post it on edHat for some public humiliation! For some reason, seems to be a bigger problem here than in other cities I've lived in.
