Before the land was bulldozed to make way for Bacara (wasn't it supposed to be a Hyatt?), we went to Haskell's to say good-bye to all the butterflies. Not just monarchs, but loads of other butterflies you don't usually see around SB.

Goleta Ranked A Safe City

There was a time that Santa Barbara would have been considered a safe city. It is such a frustrating feeling watching Santa Barbara continue it's decline into a gang and bum infested swamp. The 17% subsidized housing, the lack of gang injunctions, the invitation and enabling of homelessness and illegal immigration has swiftly run Santa Barbara into a sad replica of it's former self.

We are Christians. We sent our sons from third grade through 12th to catholic schools. We explained the differences in our beliefs as they arose. They received excellent education, guidance, sports, field trips, dances, and career guidance. Locked campus and no leaving for lunch was a comfort. Uniforms and dress code was just fine also. We never regretted our choice for catholic school, and truly believe it will help them all through their lives. They both attend city college now, and eldest is soon to graduate and hopes to transfer to ucsb. Yes yes yes to private catholic schooling!

Close but backwards, 378661. Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol (the moonshine type) made poisonous by adding methyl alcohol (typ) and trace other compounds. Methyl alcohol makes you blind or worse, and is best avoided.
I bought some 99% isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) about a year ago, I think at Walgreens. It's better for cleaning optics, drys well and you can always add a bit of water if using for skin or rubbing alcohol. FYI, 70% isopropyl alcohol/water is a better antiseptic than the higher concentrations.

After 40 years here, the biggest change in DT, other than the loss of a lot of great places, is the # of young people hanging out, probably not homeless. Don't know why - lack of jobs, cost of education, general societal decay resulting in apathy & depression, maybe?
I guess the only panhandlers we need to support are the cops - POA will always be begging at cc meetings, trying to pry every last nickel out of the city budget as well as out of each resident & tourist for bogus tickets, etc. Of course city employees like Sanchez who've lived in SB for years should be given free houses. Actually, folks, Jesus & friends gave money to beggars frequently, and accepted alms to support their ministry, according to the bible, but then, Jesus & friends were transients - itinerant preachers & fisherman, who didn't get on so well with chamber of commerce types and probably smelled more like dead fish & sweat than roses. Why was Simon Peter accused of being drunk at 9 am on Pentecost? - seems odd that anyone would think that of someone who wasn't known to be seen drunk in public. "Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more". Proverbs 31:6-7.

Vehicle Fire with Burn Victim

2013-02-25 04:49 PM

Ambulances aren't routinely dispatched to reported vehicle fires unless the dispatcher is told that an ambulance is necessary. The piece indicates there were several parties calling to report the car fire, but I don't read anywhere that any of the callers said an ambulance was needed.

The sentence "an ambulance was immediately requested" sounds like it was the responding fire crew who arrived at the scene and then immediately called for an ambulance after they learned there were injuries. If so, that's a long time for a little kid to be suffering from burns without medical treatment.

The authorities have launched an investigation. I truly hope they get to the bottom of what happened.

When they were driving around, they were getting paid an ordinary salary, not time and a half like they get at the checkpoints. The should call these road blocks unlicensed and uninsured driver checkpoints, because that's all they catch.

What amazes me is that our governments say they are out of money but they are still sending our tax dollars to the police in the form of grants to pay their overtime. Great for the police as their paychecks and pensions go up and up and up. Maybe this sequester will finally stop the grants?

554: Frankly, Hispanic guys look good with shaved heads. Now, once you add tattoos in, then you really get into profiling territory. I'm actually wondering about the gang incident - were the victims HMA's? Curious if the gang idiots were profiling and though the kid was from another gang...
And as someone who would totally carry if I could in town, I'm not so sure I'd pull a gun out in this situation. Although with the "can't draw unless you/your family is in danger" issue, all you have to do if you see this & were carrying is to yell at the guys to stop it. They'd probably involve you pretty quick, and then you could legally draw your weapon.
548: You want to help? Form a neighborhood watch, talk to cops when something happens in your neighborhood, get involved. Put up security cameras & lights if you need in your yard. Call cops when you see suspicious stuff. Carry pepperspray for situations like this.

Vehicle Fire with Burn Victim

2013-02-25 02:31 PM

539P: That may have been where the confusion came from. Mom & kid got out, went to the closest neighbor who said they already called 911. Neighbor may have just stated there was an accident/car engulfed in flames when they called, mom assumed an ambulance would be sent (aren't they usually when there's a car accident?), then the firefighters had to call for it (or the firefighters got there before the ambulance did). Tons of speculation there, but just some examples of what might have happened. I've not called 911 before because other people said they had already done so - but I don't know what they said when they called, and just assumed they've reported properly & all personnel that should show up would know. Not unreasonable at all. Not to mention this is crazy traumatic for a parent, anyway, and that alone can take it's toll. Really hope the kids ok.

@541 - not entirely accurate.

CCW laws and legalesse state that you or someone within your immediate vicinity is in mortal danger, you are within your legal rights to intervene until the threat has subsided.

That being said - if you have a 2 groups of mutual combatants going at it with bats, crowbars, what have you --- intervening to stop their mutual combat is beyond the "legal" usefulness of a CCW.

Now if it were 1 group of 8 with bats attacking innocent bystanders : Start pumping the lead.

If you're just driving by (or even sitting on your porch watching the fight happen on the street in front of you), you're not being threatened. As much as the gang and other street violence here sucks, what you propose is vigilantism.

Knee Replacement

2013-02-25 01:19 PM

Dr. Z did both of my hips...the oldest one is like 12 years old and no appreciable problems.

Nurses I know really like Dr. Z and one even ventured the statement "his stuff never gets infected." And if you have ever had a successful joint replacement that gets infected, you are basically screwed....They have to take it out and I think leave it open to treat the infection...then re-replace it...

I, too, have a rotten knee. The lateral meniscus was removed with a big open incision in 1962 and has never been the same. My spies tell me that since the knee is a more complicated and painful operation, put it off as long as you can stand it. Cortisone and some of the other "lubricant" shots are worth a try first...good luck!

527 - this is 386 - I'm not talking from nothing here - I drive an ambulance for a living - Avoid The 12 stats are just for that enforcement program. The overall stats have increased especially for ones resulting in injury and death. The head-on on the freeway near Tpk where both drivers were drunk, the over-the-side near Mariposa (over 300 feet onto the beach) - there are many more. I never kid myself as I transport the drunk ones and their victims to the ER. You can't spend enough to stop it.

Merlin's Magical Carpet Ride

2013-02-25 01:05 PM

That 10,000 animals a year sounds high to me unless the County Shelters are handling 5,000 cats in addition to their dogs. In SB City and surrounding areas, ASAP deals with the cats and the County has very little to do with them except pay for the vet assistant they have. SB County Shelters have a budget of 4 million ($4,000,000) per year and the average salary and pension costs for the 30 employees is about $90,000 per year. With this, the SB shelter adopted out somewhat more than 300 dogs last year. DAWG adopted out about the same number with a budget of about $300,000. Humane Society adoptions are much lower with staff costs of about $700,000 or so.
It seems like DAWG is the most cost effective agency but they wouldn't want to run the County shelter as they wouldn't want to euthanize the strays that don't pass the stringent behavior tests.

Fire was REPORTED at 10:50 AM. That's not the time of arrival, right? At 11:03, presumably when SBFD might have arrived, the mother (burned herself) came out of a neighboring house with the burned child. It's feasible that they were both injured and the mom grabbed the child, ran to the neighbor's house, and made the call to 911. Don't jump to conclusions, people. We don't have all the facts in yet...

Sheriff Brown used COPS's endorsement in campaign literature during the 2010 election, representing them as an organization of law enforcement members, after AG Jerry Brown's settlement of litigation on 12 fraud charges on May 28, 2009. Was Sheriff Brown fraudulently representing himself as a candidate endorsed by an association of members of law enforcement, since COPS had been shown to have no connection with law enforcement prior to the 2010 election?

Anyway, they work for us, or are supposed to. I contact them all the time. My response was that if that was true, why aren't they taking out the cross walks that they currently have designated throughout the City?

BTW, Cox no longer gives out free coax. And they only have a limited selection of lengths at the store. When I needed a 60' piece for a new run, I got it on ebay.

Know that is it a very intense and painful process, you MUST do the physical therapy, if you won't don't bother with surgery, you will have a bigger mess than you started with. I was totally committed to the physical therapy, had no infection (big fear) and was back at work WAY BEFORE schedule. The older you are the more difficult it can be. I was 56 on the first one and 60 on the second operation. Dr. Zmolek was wonderful throughout the process answered all my questions (I went in with a written list) and has a gentle sense of humor that always helps. His infection rate is very low and that is really important! Good Luck!

I don't agree with anyone who says not to worry about it. The one on Modoc, cross street from my home, recorded the average speed of vehicles. As a result, the speed limit was raised 5 miles per hour and since, then, there has been two pedestrians hit by speeding cars and 4 accidents within the new speed limit because most vehicles travel at a faster speed. The County says they had to raise the speed limit to avoid "speed traps", etc., etc., etc.,. I wrote letters and had personal meetings with the "right" people, but, all they would tell me is, it is within reason of a State Law, etc., etc,.

Have they actually determined the dimensions of the larger women that the restrooms are be enlarged for? It could mean that even if the women's restroom is expanded, fewer women will be accomodated because they will be larger and naturally will take up more space.

If similar accomodations are being considered to accept larger men, will that mean that the urinals will be installed higher on the wall, making it a real challenge for regular sized men to avail themselves of the new plumbing?

Good luck!!!! Oh, and that comment about the importance of PT afterwards?? That's critical... not so much who is your therapist but that you do the work they prescribe. No cable problems on Eastside. The whole show seemed forced, Seth was off on his timing last night and his bits weren't long enough for him to put five or six quips together to round off the rough edges. I especially thought the abruptly loud-starting "Jaws" theme chosen to get award winners off-stage was just rude, i.e. Ben Affleck, blanched, wild-eyed and tongue-tied, trying desperately to get in, before "Jaws," what should have been a smiling, relaxed moment of glory winning "Best Picture." Just wrong. And choosing Jennifer Lawrence?! Hadn't anybody even SEEN the actresses in "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild"?

To #362; Shirley Bassey is 76 yrs old and sang the hell out of her song. She has every right to feel proud about herself & her performance. We should all be so lucky to be as vibrant & active when we're in our mid-seventies. Cheers Shirley!

I believe I saw that the wall would be midway up the lawn area breaking up this visual expanse. There are too many unanswered questions for this historic building and landscape. There needs to be community discussion. This is a major change particularly since it was a very short time ago that the interior was renovated with great care to keep the historic look and feel. I recently had major orthopaedic surgery done at UCLA after the highly regarded local surgeon told me he wasn't sure IF my damage COULD be repaired, and IF it COULD it would be by someone else. AND he took 10 weeks to give me that diagnosis. Huge waste of time. The guy at UCLA did the whole job arthroscopic and I am healing beautifully. No one has mentioned it here but who you go to after the surgery for physical therapy is crucial and I highly recommend John Muller at Muller & Weber next to Cottage downtown. I go in there twice a week now for my shoulder, and see many people with knee and hip replacements being put through their routines. The staff is competent and John Muller is extremely skilled.

MacFarlane's humor may not suit everyone, but the man is hardly "talentless." In addition to creating a slew of hit animated shows (which, personally, I cannot stand), a huge hit movie ("Ted"), he has also a singer and musician who has performed both at the Royal Albert Theater and Carnegie Hall. He had song nominated for an Oscar. He is a voice-over genius. He sings, dances, writes, plays piano and several other instruments, has released an album of American favorites.

I may not enjoy his humor, but he has more talent in his right pinkie finger than most of us have in our entire body.

My brother was fascinated by Heyerdahl; we had the book and saw the movies.

From IMDB:
""Kon-Tiki" was the name of a wooden raft used by six Scandinavian scientists, led by Thor Heyerdahl, to make a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The purpose of the expedition was to prove Heyerdal's theory that the Polynesian Islands were populated from the east---specifically Peru---rather than from the west (Asia)as had been the theory for hundreds of years. Heyerdahl made a study of the winds and tides in the Pacific, and by simulating conditions as closely as possible to those he theorized the Peruvians encountered, set out on the voyage. 1950"

Appraisals are usually a percentage of the appraised value.

I would take your time on this if it's possible. First, as turquoises from some mines and areas may be more valuable than others, you need a certified gemologist who is familiar with different turquoises to identify the origin of the stones in your jewelery. The silver maker will also be very important in determining price. There should be hallmark or signature on your pieces. Some silver artists are very collectable. Use a good maginfier to look for the marks. That's where a turquiose expert can help.
Here is a link on appraisals, gemologists that might be enlightening. http://www.yourgemologist.com/appraisals.html

I'd search that to find some names. If you are serious about getting top dollar, this will take some time and detective work. You may also find out more about your family in the process!

Pick up a copy of Cowboys and Indians magazine which features many high dollar retailers in Western art, jewelery and apparrel. Bear in mind, unless you sell to a collector, you will be getting wholesale price from a dealer. I would urge caution on using ebay for getting "ideas" on pricing. Old turquiose is rare, and should not be found easily on ebay. Visit some dealers and just look at jewelery before you spill the beans about having something to sell.

Lastly, if this is family jewelery, I hope you keep some if possible, or pass it on to other family members who would enjoy wearing it.

No Awards for Cox

OP - Call Cox today and ask them to check the wiring outside your house, all the way up to the pole. Weather, birds, wear and tear could damage just your house. Also, have them come in and check the wiring in your house. Live near open areas? If so, a mouse or two could be the problem, they nibble. Lots of reasons why your house has poor reception but easy to spot why you have to suffer considering what you pay every month.

One's taste in humor (or talent assessment) is subjective, I'll admit, but Seth MacFarlane's lame, puerile, often sexist, trying-so-hard to be a "bad boy" just epitomizes the sort of general douchery that too often passes for humor these days. IMO, of course.

Mike Haskell is an authority on this subject. I have sold him a number of items, not jewelry though, and he is fair. He will tell you exactly what your item is.Vitanza will give you the lowest price possible then put a huge retail price on the item. Definitely get several price quotes. You might need to go to LA for other dealers. Don't hurry this process.

I have had no issues with Cox in the San Roque area. My reception has always been just fine and was last night as well. I enjoyed the Academy Awards but then I have a crush on Seth McFarlane so even though he missed on some of his jokes I still enjoyed him. I loved his song and dance routines. @301P I agree that Barbara Streisand wasn't as strong a singer as she used to be but I didn't mind because she was humble about it. But the Goldfinger singer (Bassey?) was terrible and not humble at all!

Knee Replacement

2013-02-25 08:40 AM

Knee replacement is a difficult surgery and has not yet reached the proficient technology and successful prognosis as hip replacement surgery. I had both hips replaced (10 years apart) by Dr. Zmolek the first with excellent results the second a little less successful (probably because I was older but both still good. Torn meniscus is a particularly troublesome and nagging injury because it recieves a blood supply from only one direction and when it is torn it does not get sufficient blood to heal correctly, which is why the torn, floating or loose piece must often be removed. Arthroscopic surgical procedure has made this much easier and less intrusive. Also they are experimenting with a replacement piece to insert and stablilize the knee once the piece (or entire meniscus) is removed to remove the weakness, locking and sudden giving out experienced by many with a torn meniscus

Cox is not the only game in town. I have been very happy with Dish. I receive every channel including premium channels, and my bil is about 2/3 of what it would be for Cox. Don't believe Cox's hype, I never loose reception, not in rain nor wind nor sleet nor snow.
It's superior and less expensive.

I do still have Cox for Internet. Unfortunately they are the only game in town.

OP, intermittent cable TV can be a sign of either a failing coax cable (street to your house, or in your house) or a failing cable modem. I once had water in my coax, problems went away when that section was replaced. Also, if you have a router, toggling power on both the modem and router can help.

Seth McFarlane is a talented guy IMO. And surely a better host than that Brit Ricky what's his name. I didn't care much for the closing "Losers" number, however.

Westside Fight

2013-02-25 06:53 AM

Umm keep in mind that a lot of these guys are 2nd, 3rd, maybe even 4th generation gang members at this point! Went to criminal court to observe one day and there were a few young teenaged gangmembers up there in orange jumpsuits. The mom of one was sitting in in front of me with 3 of her other kids and one of them who was about 8 years old, tried to steal my purse from my chair next to me. I told him to knock it off but he tried it again a few minutes later so I told his mother. She started to yell at me and threaten to kick my "white butt" in the court, it was quite obvious that the apple in the orange jumpsuit learned from her. And she was pretty scary! I would NOT want to run into her around town that's for sure. Maybe the father is in prison and the son and him are bonding now because those boys were in trouble for stabbing and killing another boy here in town.

If you missed Dame Shirley Bassey (sp?) and Barbara Streisand trying to sing their signature songs ("Goldfinger"/"The Way We Were"), count yourself lucky. Man, oh, man. It was pitiful to hear them trying to hit those notes. Or, mostly, they didn't even try to hit the notes. The orchestra had been instructed to kind of drown them out, too. Sad. Really painful to watch. (I had to switch to other channels.)

The fun part was watching Kristen Stewart employ her usual "I'm too bored and brain dead" act, during her presentation. Gotta love her consistency.

Iron Man 2 and Terminator Salvation were much more entertaining. I flipped back and forth, rather than watch the interminable "thank the director, thank my cast, mumble, mumble I'm so humble" junk.

Robert Downey, Jr. and Sam Worthington were much more entertaining.
