154 Traffic Accident

2013-02-22 11:57 PM

What do elected officials have to do with driving safely and defensively?! State legislature might make a difference to some vehicle code, years after a problem is identified.
Oh, Got it! Bulb-outs is what you mean.

Look out for yourself, drive well, slowly within reason, carefully and defensively!! Great if someone is prosecuted for their driving crimes, but that really doesn't matter to me if I'm hit, walking, biking or driving!

I agree with 746. Not sure it was Kim's goal!

This is a cool quote:
"We were very surprised," Kim said of the invention's quick ascension as a go-to graphics tool. "Usually you present a paper to 100 or 200 peers, maybe release the source code into the public domain, there is interest for a little bit, then it dissipates. In this case, there was quite a bit of interest from beginning. And because the source code was distributed for free, it turns out a lot of people were downloading and integrating it into their own software. Now it's used in places all over the world."

Google "application of wave turbulence research" and, if interested, "kim ucsb wave turbulence".

Not that I understand it, but I imagine wave theory has some real-world applications. Wave damping will be useful as large cities seek to weather-proof themselves from storm surges. The research is also applicable to air turbulence, meteorology, and even cardiology.

I love this stuff, love to read about science if I can glean only a drop of information. It's only a drop because I'm not a scientist.

I congratulate him. He made an important contribution to movie making. Movie making has been about the wonders of modern technology since its inception: photographic film! stereoscopes! motion pictures! special effects! animation! sound! color! cinerama! 3-D! cgi! Movie making is a giant industry in our area and employs thousands of people, including many software engineers and computer graphic designers. I love the technical Oscars because they're awarded in an untelevised ceremony to people who work behind the scenes to make the rest possible.

154 Traffic Accident

2013-02-22 11:21 PM

Driving is dangerous! The PR about DUI drivers and local officials attempting to create safety for soft bodies passing though areas where people who may or may not be cognizant of the fact that they're supposedly in control of more than a ton of high speed metal is really creating a safety hazard. Drive defensively, cross streets defensively. We've had more than enough deaths here for us to assume that everyone else on the road is texting or drunk, and it's disgusting both that elected officials have the cojones to pretend that they can create a safe driving environment, and that some of us have lost sufficient survival instinct to believe them.

I will! Congratulations. Wasn't there an article about this technology months ago here on Edhat?

Many do not support or appreciate basic research or what may seem to be "flashy" research. The applications for research that we may think is simply "flashy" often go far deeper and further than we're aware of, and real-world applications of research are regularly noted in scientific journals of all types. When they really bloom, you'll hear of it on the front page or Google news page.

We non-research, non-scientist people don't usually see results until there's a product or process that we're made aware of because it's in use. We never knew how it came to be.

In other words, the uses and benefits of basic research and technological development are real. And science, like mathematics, is a building block endeavor, scientific baby step after baby step. One never knows precisely where it will lead or what application can be found for the discoveries, though the researchers have a good view of a conclusion, even if it's only for the benefit of other researchers, which is no small thing -- it's another building block, another baby step. There's always a background and a future for scientific research.

Oh well. Just want to say that this science is not simply for movie making. Congratulations to all involved!

Look at the application. A $300 non-refundable/non-transferrable fee is required just to submit the application. It's a travel agency, posing as an athletic organization, offering an expensive vacation. The trip has a sports-based theme and the kids enter a few mediocre competitions. However, I've heard it is a fun vacation for those who can afford to go.

Is DownUnder on the Up & Up?

2013-02-22 10:33 PM

731P, you are right. People do need to learn to use the internet. CPCA membership is limited as follows: "Membership in Cal Chiefs is limited to municipal police chiefs and their seconds in command, as well as California Police Chiefs in good standing who have retired." You are correct in that Cam Sanchez was President in 2004 and Bill Brown in 2005. Nothing at all wrong with that.
As for COPS - it was a fraudulent charity and gave money to no one but its principals. Its state purpose was: "(a) to provide financial assistance to families of police officers and sheriffs killed in the line of duty; (b) to provide financial assistance to police officers and sherifl's disabled while performing their duties; and (c) to promote public awareness of the dangers of law enforcement." It did none of that, and neither did it finance anything but the officers pockets.
You may not like either Cam Sanchez or Bill Brown, which is your right, but please base it on fact and not this kind of thing. And this is way off subject.

2013-02-22 10:21 PM

You have internet. Check out downundersports in Australia, nonprofit status, company info filed with Australian government. Unfortunately, most of us are ridiculously naive. We have a Santa Barbara County Sheriff, Bill Brown, whose 2010 election campaign was financed and endorsed by a scam telemarketing organization called COPS, an organization that candidates pay for these purposes, that has no association with law enforcement, and that used fundraising scams that included threatening Latinos with discontinuation of their 911 service if they didn't make a contribution, and that settled litigation based on numerous fraud charges filed by Jerry Brown AG for $12.7 million. Bill Brown was also endorsed by California Police Chiefs Association ,a name similar to the Association of Chiefs of Police, a huge international organization. CPCA was founded by 16 police chiefs in small norcal counties, with Cam Sanchez & Bill Brown past presidents, and a lot of campus cops, etc, as members. He fooled the Indy's owner, Marianne Partridge, who endorsed Bill Brown based on his endorsement by the "state law enforcement organization", as well as many others. $6K is a lot of $$ - do due diligence on this.

One year we had an early unexpected frost in Fresno, and of 25 mature sago palms I had in tubs, all suffered frost damage which "whited" them right down to the nut. My nursery expert advised to leave them alone until spring, when new growth appeared. Then I was to cut back the damaged fronds. Worked like a charm, and only one died permanently. Good luck!

Ammo is not cheap. The sherriff has been called many times but they won't even come up here anymore. They know who I am and that I'm shooting safely. But everytime some new Poo Poo moves into the area, they like to call the police. Nothing funner and stress relieving than a little target shooting and gopher control!

It took a male bulldog to achieve a bit of equality or justice. This male bulldog even took the case to the California Supreme Court and won. We would have made it into the record, but there was actually a worse "now ex-" spouse out there.

614: You're wrong about the Queen palms as far as rats go. I have a Queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) in my front yard. No rats. Queens don't make good rat habitat: too far to climb and no "cover" on the way up and down (I think you're thinking of Canary Island Date palms.) Only Acorn woodpeckers, crows, and the occasional Barn owl in my Queen.

I love my Queen. She is graceful and lovely. She provides some shade and definitely "dresses up" the place. The fronds, when chopped up small enough, make for great kindling, too.

The whole "native plants" argument is so stale and specious. Santa Barbara wouldn't be the paradise it is without the exotics. And are you trying to say that a Queen palm is messier than a Washingtonia (native palm?) Puh-lease!

That said, the neighbors should have been notified of this removal. I have had dealings with Tim Downey and I am here to tell you: he is not the arborist that we deserve to have here. I really miss Dan Condon.

Edison is deciding to remove trees now that they are old and established? Heresy.

Roscoe's Chicken 'n Waffles is heavenly and I wasn't raised on it.

The Hollywood Roscoe's often has a stretch limo in front and with it's '70s unfinished wood paneling, mirror, and spider plant decor and incredible food, it's like the home cooking of people who would have been much too hip to have ever lived in Santa Barbara.

SB isn't worthy of having a Roscoe's. SB gets a new fast food chain and appears to be thrilled about it. We'll never have a Roscoe's.

560, any discharged firearm testing within the city is unsafe and it's completely illegal to do so unless you are doing so as a matter of saving your life or the life of another in danger.

I don't really care what gunsmiths and hobbiests world wide think. I care what is logical and legal. Neither of which cover this incident.

(And no, I'm not anti-gun. I'm actually one of those responsible gun owners who would never compromise someone else's safety or their sense of safety by doing something this incredibly selfish and stupid.)

Hermes you are right there is no evidence that it makes you safer because you become a statistic when you get murdered not when you stop it. So there are no statistics on how many crimes were stopped. As for your theory about not for civilians. I seem to remember a cop a few weeks ago in LA going nuts on his co workers. So to think that cops are not human too is just crazy. A badge does not mean you are immune to insanity.

Residents in the 200 and 300 blocks...

2013-02-22 03:36 PM

These were queen palms. The only things that nest in them are rats. They are also old, and have probably been there since before the power lines went in. They were in the parking strip. They are without a doubt the most unattractive and high maintnance palm we have. Once a year they drop little coconuts that are a trap to walk on and a danger to mow, and stop up the sewers. The rest of the time they drop fronds. For this we get a grey column full of staples with a dust mop on top. Years ago, one broke off and utterly crushed a car.
The reason we have 2 street lights is because of the half-way house on the block. One was temporary, and one was the permanent one, and somehow they both stayed. I for one am grateful, since our crime rate in this block doesn't seem to be as bad as those surrounding us.
The question is, are they going to replace the palms with more palms, or something else ?

Tracey Rangel Cruz. 805-965-0752. She can be tough. For the most part, as someone who has been thru the family law gauntlet, I have to agree with 572. Getting all charged up in butt kicking mode will do nothing but cost you more money and your kids their future. You want someone who can be tough when it needs to happen, but more so, is fair and can work with the other lawyer. Because while maybe your family is breaking up, that doesn't mean all parties need to be destroyed financially. These words are hard to hear, live by during the emotion of it all, and I don't know the specifics of your situation. She was an outstanding attorney for me and cared about my case.

Not for civilians. Sorry. There is virtually no evidence that civilians who carry are any safer in the event of gun violence than those who don't. Especially if you keep a gun in the home.

And comparing people who are required to carry guns as a function of their job and people who have the option of owning a firearm is kind of a poor comparison.

Note: I'm not advocating for making guns illegal, I do believe in the Second Amendment. I just think there's a big difference between, say, a shotgun and an AR-15 or a Five-seveN.

Dioji is the best place. Camp Canine (at least in my opinion and I've tried both) can't compare. I feel much better taking my brood to Dioji.

I feel like Dioji has more modern ideas about dog care where Camp Canine is a bit stuck in the whole Alpha thing and can be too much for some dogs.

Not making any assumptions about this accident, but how about the drivers coming home from the Casino after a few hours of playing and drinking and avoiding the freeway AND all those tasting rooms that our SB locals and tourists visit and then drive home over the pass. I have been on the planned van wine tours and believe me I am very happy none of the people in my group was driving home.

Residents in the 200 and 300 blocks...

2013-02-22 12:54 PM

Good grief, there's a huge difference between a tree in the area near the street and one within the property. And we need fewer regulations that impact property rights.

There is an easement that allows for the city to dictate what you do with the trees located within 10 feet of the curb (selecting, planting, pruning, removing, etc.) and Edison has an easement about trees that interfere with their power lines. You can complain, but you agreed to these easements in writing when you purchased the home. The property owner can just about do whatever they want with trees that are growing anywhere else on their property (some exceptions for blocking views). If you're a renter, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but on this issue your opinion really doesn't matter (except to vote in/out issues or people that might affect policy).

I live in Goleta, so take my dog to Dioji - very convenient. She goes there once a week for the day. This keeps her socialized. The set up is good, with separate areas depending on your dog's disposition and size. The employees are competent and always let me know how my dog behaved that day. I have also kept her there for a few days when traveling. She appeared to be just fine when I picked her up.

I have also used Camp Canine. John is a good trainer, and has helped me and my dog tremendously. I have also kept my dog there for a week. John used that time to further her training.

The only downside to both places is that they are expensive, but that does not stop me from taking her there.

I would recommend both places for day care and overnight stays.

2013-02-22 11:26 AM

466P: I grew up shooting in my backyard (when younger it was a 24 acre farm, later it was just a 1/2 acre back/sideyard). Nothing wrong with it. However, letting your neighbors know before you go popping off is probably the smart thing to do if they aren't used to it. Also, this is assuming it's legal - and I wouldn't count on a newbie knowing the rules & regulations (and firing in a safe manner). Next time the OP talks to the neighbor, ask if they've taken a safety course - if not, kindly request that they keep their target practice to ranges/safe areas until they do so because you're just looking out for the kiddos (or give you a call so you can make sure the kids aren't wandering around next time they start practicing). If you ask nicely & make your point well, I don't see them having an issue with it. It's when you call people "gun nuts" & call the cops on them when neighbors start having issues. I appreciate the OP since he called his neighbor first & talked to him.

There is no information on the size of the property involved, all we know is it's unincorporated SB. The rule is no discharging fire arms closer than 150 yards to any occupied dwelling. Loose Pooch has the indoor cement not conducive for standing doggies. Also, you cannot see your dog when you walk in. There is a video camera and a small window but our dog isn't a poser for the camera so we cannot see what he's doing. Hiding something? Bad design and bad footing.

Totally legal to discharge a firearm on your private property as long as you are outside CITY limits. As long as it wasn't/isn't excessive, what is the concern? Was anyone injured? We have all gotten a new item at some point that we were excited to use. From what I recall from my firearms class, which was years ago, you have to be +50 feet from a road way, on County lands, aiming in a direction that poses no hazard to animals or people, with a known location for the bullets to stop (like a hillside), safe handling and transport, etc...

It sounds like your neighbor was within the law, but you obviously have a relationship with him. Explaining your concerns and politely asking him not to fire his weapon again seems like the best course of action at this point.

I had two sons that played Little League baseball at McKenzie park years ago (Pony League) and I coached teams there and umpired for the league games at McKenzie Park for many years with Shelly Deutsch. I can remember there were NEVER bums hanging out, camping out and mooching and drinking there at the time. That crop of bums never made it that far North from the State Street/Milpas Street/beachfront corridors. Once the City started to look the other way because bums and transient street people became "homeless people", a badge they quickly donned, entitling them to special politically correct status, things changed. Now they can be found everywhere and we are all expected to be sypathetic to their "plight" and tolerant of their lifestyle, as "poor homeless people".

Palm Plant Help

2013-02-22 09:43 AM

looks like a Pigmy Date Palm? they're not very cold hardy--and yes, that looks like frost damage--nor do they like full sun or exposure to wind.

Palms are of many genuses (groups) and come from many tropic or semi tropical areas of the world, so adressing general "palm" problems as far as their environment is not very productive.

Suggest you take some fronds in a plastic bag (in case they have some 'visitors') along with a baggie of a soil sample to Terra Sol. They can help you identify the genus and species, and help address any problems with suitablility for the exposure within your yard and neighborhood. (Pigmy Date Palms tip burn in peristent wind, whereas the Queen Palms so ubiquitous here, don't mind) About 10 years ago local Costcos had some big multi PDP's that it sold by the truckload, so they are everywhere within the coastal zone, suffering silently.

On second thought, they should get bids to move the "gate" to the skateboard park where it would fit in much better and would not need to be repainted at all. They could change the name then to to "The Chromatic Skate".

One of the original posters here. I heard the boom, but missed seeing the fireball. Darn!!! I would love to have seen it.

The speed of sound varies with altitude (air density), but if you use the old "five seconds per mile" rule for counting off the time between a lightning flash and its accompanying thunder, than four or five minutes' lag puts the fireball around 50 to 60 miles away. Not far in astronomical distances!

Udon at Atari Ya on Stowell @ Broadway in S. Maria is very good. Nice Japanese family restaurant, all dishes are consistently good. Nice old-school atmosphere. welcoming staff and good service. Large Travel Mug Local Purchase

2013-02-22 08:45 AM

I don't think this is a weird request at all. This is, after all, a community resource. Why not take advantage of people's collective local knowledge if you're looking for something specific?

To answer OP - not sure of SB Outfitters is still open (it was in the process of closing down when I walked by a couple of weeks ago) but if it is - check and see if the still have the wide mouth double walled klean kanteens - they used to have the tops that convert it to a cup too. I have had one for a few years and it is the BEST travel mug and it keeps my coffee/tea hot for HOURS. I love it. If they're gone, then I would try IV Food Coop, they sometimes carry the Klean Kanteen bottles and tops and they have several other travel cups to choose from. Good luck!

Do You Doggie Daycare?

2013-02-22 08:38 AM

We boarded our dog at Camp Canine for seven years, and would put him into a play group for half a day sometimes just for his fun. The last 3 years he was blind and they put him on a schedule and made sure he didn't have any accidents. He had a complicated schedule of 3 eye meds, 2 shots and 2 pills a day: No problem for Camp Canine! They made out a special sheet and everybody involved initialed everything after each shot or pill or set of meds. After he became blind, he always had his own place at night with all his familiar surroundings and bed area that he knew. When I would take him to Camp Canine, he would never even look around! -- he would just eagerly go with one of the helpers -- everybody knew him. He had two special friends in "the yard" he loved, who worked with the animals, and he would follow them everywhere, and I think Camp Canine tried to have them on when my dog was going to be coming in. The person at the front desk always knew just how he had been getting along on the visit. I really can't recommend Camp Canine enough.

Dont think it's just SBCC kids - I watched a woman in a van driving like a maniac up Fairview to pick up her kids at that school opposite the library. But there is a problem with that 3-to-2 lane stretch of the northbound 101 just north of Fairview. Even if you drive at a "reasonable" speed, the traffic often slows down very quickly there and can take you by surprise. Also, love the way northbound drivers who suddenly realize they want to go to UCSB will zoom across traffic lanes to make that exit - lots of near misses there.

It was an awesome sight, driving by La Conchita to SB on the 101 - at 10:31pm it streaked in the southern sky over the channel from west to east, growing bright and shedding pieces very fast before exploding. The bright white final trail was about the width of my finger at arms length. I didn't hear the boom (driving). With a 4-5 minute delay in the boom that would put it about 50-60 miles away. As they typically explode 20-30 miles altitude that would put it 40-50 miles south of us or twice as far as Santa Cruz island.

We've used both Dioji and Camp Canine for the occasional short (afternoons) and long-term (2+ week) stays. I have nothing bad to say about either, but I think that the layout is better at Camp Canine. They really go the extra mile, and I have to say that I believe they upped their game when Dioji came on the scene. Both are great places for dogs, but for our dog (large and active), the roaming area and pools at Camp Canine are a better fit. Staff at both places are wonderful though, they are both great options for dog owners. SB is lucky to have them both.

Beached Boats

Read Danas' "Two years before the mast". He covers anchoring in sb and how dangerous it was when an unexpected storm rolled in. They actually dropped their anchor line with a bouy on it (to find it on return) and headed for open sea as fast as they could. The old square riggers could not sail to windward at all which meant that only the anchor stood between them and the rocks in storms. Many boats dragged anchor and were wrecked on our shores.

Awful or Awesome Results

2013-02-22 07:01 AM

Chromatic Gate was a fine addition to public sculpture in the community. I think it's a sign of barbarism on the part of Ed Hat that they are incapable of talking about what its history is and why it's a good thing. If you were a little more history minded, you could write about the great debate on where it SHOULD be placed and who is Paul Mills (God rest his soul)...
Next thing...try talking about another public sculpture like the wonderful King Carlos statue and see what happens. Public sculpture in this community is near impossible unless you do sea creatures...dolphins and whales tails...Santa Barbara I am embarrassed for you...but who cares?

Do You Doggie Daycare?

2013-02-22 12:34 AM

I haven't used Dioji, I've heard some good feedback.

I have used Camp Canine once for boarding and I adore the owners, the Soroskys. Mary is great and John is an extraordinary dog trainer. The Camp itself is delightful. I've had other business with them; Mary is as responsible and caring a breeder (of R. Ridgebacks) as there can be. (Don't know if she's still breeding dogs.) She has taken her own "canine offspring" back under her wing if necessary; she would never do otherwise if she were aware of a problem.

Under "Services," their website says:
"If your dog prefers sleeping with a friend after a long day of play, friends are tucked away together to make Camping even more fun. Camp Canine staff or owners are on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
http://www.campcanineinc.com/

Many referrals for John on an Edhat dog training thread:
http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=93859

A Noozhawk article by him:

Inexpensive Shingle Vaccine

2013-02-22 12:07 AM

i got mine last December @ CostCo. for $171.00 with the CostCo. member discount (non-CostCo. member cost is $180.00) & the pharmacist did it quickly, in a side room for vaccinations. I called Walgreen's, Eastside Clinic, Rite-Aid, Sansum, maybe some other sites in SB/Goleta...cost was between low of $180 at CostCo. and up to $240 (?
Rite-Aid on the Mesa). The vaccine requires refrigeration, which narrows down the number of sites offering it.

The vaccination is a one time injection, no boosters needed. It is much cheaper financially than the cost for meds to control of months of uncomfortable symptoms, as well as the disruption in a person's usual activities and possible wardrobe choices till the Shingles resolves itself. My mother worked with an older woman who had so much discomfort with clothing rubbing areas of her skin, she was wearing tent dresses for over a year.
