807 & 818 = edhat trolls ??? The sailboats at Cojo were featured in pictures on edhat a few weeks back. It is difficult for boats to wash ashore here in SB when the wind is from the northwest. The "battleships" were destroyers and they were coming south when they turned into the beach at La Honda. They never saw Castle Rock.

930P. don't worry, 913 will get booted. The problem with incendiary statements like his is not only are they dubious, they are not constructive. It's sad really, Someone like that person could take his strong feelings and direct them towards things like electing a different President, immigration reform, or teen pregnancy prevention. In other words, he can have his beliefs, but make the world a better place. Instead his rant is like a tiny bottle of kerosene on a patch of weeds. His values will smoke and flare, but never spread.

I've been in my rental for well over 15 years and cannot ask for paint or common repairs-such as a new toilet, unless I want a huge increase or to move. The last time she had to do repair work, right afterwards, the rent went up by one third of the total rent! I think it is TERRIBLE that we live in a place where, because we have no money, we are treated like serfs. There is no equity in the rental market. It feels like the caste system. It's tragic and makes for a world of unhappy people.

They brought us free sandwiches at my work and they were okay, not that great but what they did do was give us all coupons for both a free lunch sandwich and a free breakfast sandwich. Wonder how many other companies that they did that with? It's a way to get people to try it but I won't be going there for their sandwiches, would way rather go to El Pollo Loco or if I want something fried then KFC is a special treat.

I believe -798 called it correctly. Three engines, a ladder truck, and a battalion chief is a standard first-alarm response to a reported structure fire. Fires in a structure can spread rapidly. If the structure on fire is larger, then more equipment is sent. The other units can always be recalled if they are not needed, but it's the battalion chief or other fire officer on scene who makes this decision once they have made an initial assessment of the incident. Personally, if it's MY dryer/chimney/house/whatever that's burning, I'm not gonna mind hearing a lot of sirens and seeing a lot of equipment pull up - the more, the better...

Heheheh.... it's just a fast food joint!! Kids will love it for the high caloric content and adults who still like to eat like kids will love it too. I don't particularly give a flying carp that religion is used to promote the business and apparently it's good a marketing plan. Personally I'm old school and keep my prayers to myself and don't do business with those who parade theirs like trophy wives. Will it last? KFC hasn't done well here nor has Boston Market and El Pollo Loco always looks like a mortuary when I've looked in. I'll take even odds about the long term success of this fast new chicken joint.

We have been twice. I wanted to see what the hype was about as well. I have family in the south that rave about the sandwiches. I personally have tried the chicken nuggets and the strips. Thought they were good for "fast food". I appreciated that the waffle fries were not overly greasy (or at least didn't appear that way to me). My daughter had a salad, and I agree with the previous poster about not being anything fantastic. We ordered milk shakes...have to say, those were super good! I was impressed with how many employees they had out trying to move the line along. I don't think it is the restaurants fault for the line on state, and frankly feel like it may not have been as big of a deal for some people if it was for a drive thru starbucks or something. However, for my family of four, with 3 milkshakes and a soda it was a little pricy, $38.00. I will probably for select items, but not on a regular basis.

895: My dad never once ate there before the controversy, despite driving by the oxnard location multiple times. After hearing about the CEO and "exercising his freedom of speech", he made it a point to go on one of the first days it was open. It goes both ways. I thought the food was disgusting before the CEO proved he couldn't keep his mouth shut and his opinions to himself. I equate it to every other gross fast food place there is, a complete waste of time, money, resources, and health.

The thing with Deckers is that yes they do have several brands, but only one of their brands does well compared to other known brands. And of that one brand, Ugg, only 3 or 4 of their models of shoes out of an Ugg line of possibly 30 (max) models per gender does serious money. I wonder what % of overall revenue is generated by the Classics line. It didn't help their cause when they raised the prices by about 15-25% in some sort of response to market-saturation.

I ate at the Oxnard location about 5 years ago - it was okay - nothing to go back for. I then lost about 120 lbs (the eat less, exercise more diet) over the course of the next few years and really learned about food and nutrition. Fast food, even my once beloved Sonic, will never be part of the picture again. I'm not going to hate on them. I'll treat them just like I did BK...passin' them by. Eat what you like...don't waste time and calories on what you don't. And restaurant owners - never ever put your politics on front street - keep it close.

After trying unsuccessfully to get my insurance company to pay for the shot, I got mine at Costco. My husband, brother, father, and grandmother all had shingles and they suffered horribly. My understanding is that even if you get shingles after the shot, it will be a much milder case than if you hadn't gotten vaccinated. My insurance company declined to cover me as I am not yet 60. However, both my husband and my brother were under 60 when they came down with shingles.

As long as there are more guns floating around this largely weapons producing country with 9 million people under or unemployed, there will be more gun violence. I would never own a gun because I was taught that "violence begets violence" and I believe it. It just makes sense, if you look at the physical reality of it. Two out of four that I know who have guns in the home, were victims of gun violence due to theft and suicide. Nice. Without those guns in the home, there would be one more person alive and one less criminal with a gun in his hand. (Criminals usually steal their guns from all you nice people who own them). A gun is not an effective replacement for a weak and unimaginative mind.

You think getting a random dog shipped to your door is going to be better than seeing one in person and finding out if you connect with it or not? Not trying to criticize, but to me, shipping a dog sounds like mail order consumerism. When you get something you are going to invest time and energy into caring for, you should at least see if the shoe fits first. Aside from that point, I agree 100% with the people stating that there are plenty of adoptable dogs in the shelters that need a good home. If you are willing to provide one, I'm certain the chosen dog would be overjoyed.

I rescued a young purebred from a CA organization. Many CA orgs post their available rescues on Petfinder dot com, as mine was. I have had her for 7 years now and she's the greatest! Recently I saw a documentary on puppy mills and they are most prevalent in the Midwest and they con buyers into thinking they are legit with phony websites, brochures, etc. and also counterfeit papers so proceed with caution!

We've had several dogs in the last 20 years, all from the organizations off of Patterson ave.... They all slobber great, have great attitudes, guard the front door well, play catch, follow spoken commands, and are real sweethearts. We take our time when choosing a dog, but the breed has not been a large concern, rather, the attitude of the dog. Slow and easy. They come fixed. And we take time to integrate them into the house. We have gone to person training early one and once that was done we knew how to work with the dog. This is the mistake we often see -- people think it's the dog that needs training when in fact the dog training class is really about training the person. Good luck!

Google Care Credit. com. It's an option which is accepted by many vet clinics for their clients to make payements for vet care. There can be risks for older dogs to undergo surgery, so don't try to go so cheap that you put your dog at risk. forgetabout care4paws, their marketing says they offer vet care assistance to pet owners but they don't. Going out of Santa Barbara can save you money. Vet clinics in smaller towns in rural areas can give just as high quality care but for less costs. Dog and Cat Clinic in Nipomo for example, great service and very reasonable costs.

Most new fast food places are like that for a while. I lived in Lake Forest when Sonic opened a store down there. They had to use almost half of the Target parking lot across the street as a staging area, sending a few cars at a time down to the line at the store. Chick fil A's pretty good. A little spendy for fast food but the quality is fairly high and you don't get nickle-and-dimed for dipping sauces. And the waffle fries are pretty darn good. Just wait a month for the hype to die down and it will be like any other fast food restaurant.

OK, here is what I would have written for the text if I HAD written the headline: Hubby and I went there for the first time today (mostly to see what all the hype was about). I had my normal lunch salad, he had their Spicy Chicken sandwich. Salad was just so-so at best, very little chicken on top, too expensive for what was served compared to other lunch places. Sandwich was "OK" but nothing to get excited about. Small for the price, also. Soft drinks that you can't refill yourself, have to take back to the busy counter to get a refill. Not impressed. Won't be back. Nothing special AT ALL. JMHO

BTW: Who's got the scoop on the pod of Airstreams that occupies the bluff a little further south? You can see them on Google Earth. You can also see a few in the same location on CA Coastline at approx 1.5 miles south east from Point Cojo. Pretty cool.

Wait, you were given a prescription that can only be filled at Sansum? That seems wrong (potentially illegal?)... Maybe I'm just confused. Your insurance says that they'll pay for you get the vaccine given by your doc in office. But your doc says that it's his policy to have Sansum nurses give the vaccine & he can't do it (& therefore insurance won't cover anything). Did I understand this right? It seems wrong & convoluted. I can't image it's correct - maybe you should call Sansum & try to talk to someone about policy. If you're simply looking for a cheaper vaccine, call Costco, they usually have great prices. Call around to various pharmacies just to check on prices, but call Costco first.

Maybe, 794, you could've double checked your numbers before you spewed misinformation. The efficacy rate for the OP's age group is around 64%. Sixty-Four Percent. That is based on a clinical trial that involved over 38,000 patients. As to the $200 cost, I would double check with my HMO and ensure that I heard right. I can't imagine an HMO _not_ covering this shot in total. The price is the same just about everywhere. The variance in price for cash purchase is only about $10 no matter where you go, generally. There's some places that charge $250.

@768 - While some are paid well, the majority are not. Many have second jobs because their County salaries do not cover their living expenses. Most live paycheck to paycheck. Many have lost their homes thanks to wage concessions. Had you been at the BOS meeting last year during which social workers lost 3.5% of their wages, you might be singing a different tune. I'd like to see you spend your days removing children from drug-riddled homes that are covered in excrement. They don't go home and roll around in $100 bills. They go home and worry about how they are going to pay their $20 electricity bill. Naturally, some are not well suited for public service. However, most are kind and helpful individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty, and deal with rude citizens on a daily basis. Perhaps your negative experience has something to do with your negative attitude.

I don't have a source for you, but just thought I'd pass this on...the vaccine keeps most people over 40 from getting shingles about 15-20% of the time. Which means it's not really like it protects you from shingles. Also, if you have ever had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic neomycin (or any mycin relative antibiotic) you should avoid this vaccine since it is considered a cross allergen. (Most doctors will tell you this before you get the shot and let you research your medical history a bit, but if you go to a clinic you might not get this very important information so I figured it was worth mentioning.) Good luck finding someplace cheap if you decide you really need this shot!

I made the SNAG comment above, and I choose to keep my identity private because of some of the crazies. I'm also part Native American -- Iroquois. I have never encountered so many pretend First Peoples in any other place, who try to use the 'sacred Native American site' argument to fight everything they're opposed to. All of nature should be treasured and treated as sacred, but most people live and work in buildings nowadays, and every site on the south coast can't be opposed as "sacred ground." It becomes like the boy who cried wolf. I had a group of SNAGs tell me that there was NO acceptable place for a local business, as every place that was possible between Rincon and Gaviota was off limits. "It's all sacred ground." You lose your credibility with that stance, especially when you're less Native American than I am, and have spent far less time living in native ways. I once worked for Deckers too. It's a pretty good company. I'm glad they're building and staying here.

actually a few airlines do provide climate-controlled cargo areas for pets. there are a lot of unadoptable dogs at the shelters, that's a fact. no one is going to adopt a big vicious dog that barks constantly. I think adopting is great, but it's silly to chastise people if they don't want to do that. Many of the local adoption groups are pricing themselves out of the market. For example, many of the chihuahuas would be taken by hispanic families if it was cheaper to adopt.

Deckers is wonderful and we all wish their employees well. But...is it really prudent to invest so much into facilities given the whims of the retail market? You'd have to have steel nerves to even trade their stock these days. And is a beautiful new facility really going to improve their ability to design shoes, manage overseas manufacturers, or recruit? Reminds me of the move by Network Hardware Resellers to the Taj Majal. From the outside it looks like executive level hubris.

I'm starting to think that they send a "slew" of sirened vehicles to every call. Maybe a little more discretion could be used in equipment/personnel required so the other guys/stuff can go answer other calls. If this turns out to be some mass murder or something, I'll take this back. But I'd rather see thinner coverage over a wider area.

I found this short article as I was looking to see if there was any information on Hunt's. The building housed the china, silver and gift shop well into the 1970's when it was sold. It was not the original site of Hunt's which was started in 1871 and I remember the 100 yr anniversary because I was graduating from high school in Carpinteria. My grandfather & grandmother (Robert & Martha Hunt) established it before passing it on to my uncle LeRoy Hunt. I still run into people from the Santa Barbara area (including Munich) that remember the family business. Thanks for the memories. Dexter W. Hunt, Boise, ID

No need to import as there are plenty of great dogs here already! You can even "test drive" a dog by fostering! One word: DAWG Two words: K-9 pals Three words: Santa Barbara HumaneSociety (had to cheat a bit!). http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?location=93101&animal_type=Dog&pet_breed=&pet_age=&pet_gender=&startsearch=Go http://santabarbara.craigslist.org/pet/ There are tons of great dogs at the pound! My daughter fostered a dog that had been in lock-up for 1.5 years and ended up adopting her. Everyone that knows her are so perplexed that such a great dog was without a family for so long and my daughter feels good that she didn't contribute to the increasing burden of unwanted dogs which is what happens when breeders are used as a source for a furry friend.

Assuming this is a genuine post--because, with all due respect, it sounds a little on the naive side--you might try a simple Google search for the topic of mid-west puppy purchase. Rather than get bounced around like a ping pong ball in the eye of a discussion hurricane, gather basic facts on why and how a puppy can be bought on the internet and shipped. Even if you had an assurance that it was a thoughtfully bred and healthy pup (which is sadly not likely), you want to question who ships a puppy that young and that small in winter weather. That is too long for a pup that young to be isolated and cold. There is no such thing as heated cargo. Air pressure controlled, yes, but heat--no. Also, be aware many unscrupulous--read profit-minded above all else--now post photos of generic family rooms, lawns, and children to fool you into believing the pup is raised in a home environment. Really, they are raised in feces-encrusted rusted cages. Want to know another mind-blowing fact? Many puppy mills today are owned and run by Amish people! I am serious. Look it up, it's sad and true. Good luck getting a wonderful dog who will be healthy, not fearful, and a well-loved member of your family. You should not feel at all bad if you have decided on the breed you want, and adopting won't work out, but you should protect yourself and not support immoral people who raise puppies in the worst conditions.

My reasons that I wouldn't do this are: the trauma of the flight on the puppy, you have no idea the health of the parents. Puppy mill puppies are a crap shoot. If the dog isn't health, it will be harder to return the dog. Would you put a sick dog on a plane to return it? If you don't meet the dog, how do you know the temperament? We have rescue groups for every breed of dog in Ca where you can go visit the dog. Give DAWG a call, we have rescue contacts all over Ca.

Here's the thing- there are "responsible breeders" of just about every breed within driving distance. That is a way to avoid "puppy mills", many of which flourish in the midwest and southern states. I'm not so much against buying purebreds. Just try to keep it close to home so you can inspect and, if there's a problem, hold someone accountable, close to home.

@648, if dogs are not killed at shelters in SB due to overcrowding, then why does the County shelter start labeling dogs as unadoptable whenever their numbers get above 100? Unadoptable means dead. Anyone who has volunteered there in the last decade has seen this dynamic. @726P, why do you think the rescue groups here are the ones doing the trashtalking? It all looks anonymous to me. The people running the rescue groups here are some of the most reasonable and pragmatic people I know. Some of their volunteers, on the other hand, can be pretty dogmatic. Dogmatic, get it?

If the OP is looking for a smaller breed dog, check out Cold Noses, Warm Hearts in Goleta. I've seen postings on Craigslist and in the window of their brick and mortar location of many poodles, Bischon mixes and chi mixes. It does seem like the majority of dogs at DAWG are pit mixes. CNWH gives a good alternative to those wanting a smaller dog.

Distict Attorneys do not pursue molestation cases that they are not confident they can successfully prosecute. That said Bail has been Revoked. Trial Setting begins 2/25. Norris has been erroneously affiliated with various religious organizations on the internet. To be clear, he was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. there are many complaints from Jehovahs Witnesses already about this case. Of course they will attempt to spin this story claiming Norris was not a "Jehovah's Witness". The reality is Norris was a high profile elder in Carpinteria for many years during the time he perpetrated the molestations. Before moving to Costa Rica he "stepped down" from serving as an Elder but still was a very active rank & file JW in the Quepos Congregation. In July 2011, when the victim confronted him with the allegations of abuse, he immediately got on a plane back to Costa Rica fearful of repercussions from Law Enforcement should anyone report to the police.

Landlady here, ditto 194. After 15 years of normal "wear and tear", you deserve a new coat of paint. Since you have written letters with no response, send them a written estimate how much a professional painter will cost you, include a paint chip for their "pre-approval" of color. Then request that that you be allowed to pay the painter and reduce it from your rent over 3-4 months. There are sites online to explain how to do this legally. That will either wake them up to respond to you or you will have a basis to proceed with the professional. Make sure that the letter is certified, return receipt, etc. My renters just text me.

Hi all, I was Mr. Bean's very long time tenant on the property. I rented the studio he had in back for 15 yrs. I just now found out about his passing. I know the whole story, inside out, I was even called in to testify in court. I would often sit on the porch and listen to one of his fabulous stories that he had to tell. I remained on the property an additional 4 yrs after Mr. Bean entered the nursing home. I had a nice rapport with his legal conservators, but allow me to set the record straight. As nice a person Mr. Bean was and he was my favorite landlord of all times, he usually found his own troubles, and I stayed out of them, which is probably why I lived on the property for so long. I remember the attorneys coming around, but yet his conservators did nothing in the beginning to try to get his home back. Trust me I was there both on the property.

We recently traveled out of state for a site visit, talk to the operators and to choose our pet. It was a very positive experience. I loved meeting my new pets' siblings and mom. PoodleLady offers very sound advice. I don't think it's wise to trash-talk online, then turn around and have your hand out for money. The rage and also pushing the false notion that the local orgs here are so at the top of their game that they're trend setters for orgs everywhere else (Mountain Lion Rescue) is one example of the ridiculousness that I won't forget. I still support animal rescue orgs- just not in this county. That's permanent.

I agree with checking out the breeder and their facilities. I also agree with SBPOODLELADY that a 3-4 pound puppy will fit in a carry-on pet carrier under your passenger seat. So you can fill two needs with one deed by personally flying out to the midwest to check out the breeder in person, and if all is OK, then fly back with your new puppy as a carry-on. Sure, this is probably more costly than the breeder flying the puppy out in cargo, but the benefits and avoidance of potential risks doing this in person will be worth it.

I support purebred breeders, when they are truly breeding good dogs. I wouldn't buy from the midwest, site unseen, unless you're involved in the dog world and know the reputation of this breeder. If you are simply looking for a good purebred dog of a particular breed, find one within driving distance and pick it up yourself. I drove to Montana to pick up a 9 week old puppy one time. We had a great trip home with our adult dog acting as "mom". The flight would have been very traumatic.

I went to a breed rescue in Acton (many breed rescues are located there, about 1 1/2 hour drive from here) and I got a 1 year old dog with a pedigree. Ten years later he is a wonderful dog, healthy, sweet, great with people and other dogs. It was a great decision. Maybe you could look into a breed rescue if you have your heart set on a particular breed.

Ditto what SBPoodlelady said. I will also add that my puppies are much larger than 3-4 lbs at 8 or 9 weeks. If they were that small then I would encourage the new owners to fly themselves out so that I could meet them in person and bring the puppy back with them in the cabin of the plane.

Hello, original poster here. The judgment is from 2006. It was legal fees stipulated to me by x-spouse. He was in contempt of court, promised some documents which he never delivered to avoid more severe punishment, and wrote a bad check to my attorney for my fees ( unfortunately not to me- I had paid her bill earlier) The amount is just over 5k. I had another judgment which I successfully collected last year with the help of this same family law attorney. Got a writ and levied his bank account. It is very upsetting how easy it is for someone to do the wrong thing and not pay what they owe.

I commend you, FELIPECON3. I think in order to find a solution it takes ideas and the experience of those who have worked with those in gangs, or have grown up around them. I think the police department has its job in taking violence off the streets, but it will also take more people willing and able to work with those kids, and even those adults who want to live a better life. For those who don't, or who commit crimes, they need to be held accountable for their crimes, instead of getting out of jail early for overcrowding. I don't have answers. I won't pretend to have answers. I also don't think I'm in a place to judge those who are trying. I have lived her for a few years, my husband was born and raised here. I can't say that I really follow the politics here, or am truly familiar with the part Cam Sanchez has played in helping/hurting the effort to curb the violence, which is why I, myself, cannot judge. I hope there is a way to bring an end to all this, not only for our city, but our country.

To OP - the question is, do you want the band for background music or a more front and center - dancing type of scene? We've got a lot of great bands here. The Rawhides (from the SY Valley) play great country/blues/rock music and covers. The Bomb is a well-known local band that does great covers and fun r&b dance hits. I also love Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan. But if you want something more background music, there are a lot of good guitar players (like the dude that plays at Endless Summer during happy hour!)

All of Goleta is sacred Chumash land and there are burial sites all over. I find the rock grinders and arrow heads all the time. Before the Spanish and Portuguese and Irish came here, this place was a real paradise. Here's a great map showing how many villages there were from Malibu to Pismo. It's unfortunate how the Chumash were treated by the Europeans and it's unfortunate how little the Euro-americans know about whose land they've planted their homes upon. You're all immigrants.

I’m amazed and shocked at some of these comment. I have been working with Jr. High and H.S. kids on the E. S. of SB for the past 5 years. I have worked closely with every type of kid. Some in gangs, some that are surrounded by that life style and others who are normal kids. There is never going to be an over night solution to the violence. It breaks my heart to hear about deaths in our community and even more when i know kids. My wife and I (and our new baby) live on the east side. I was raised in SB. I care about the community and the every kind of family. We have spent the last 5 years investing in the lives of young people. We have loved them unconditionally and cared for them in tough situations. They have called us in the middle of the night asking for help. We have had gang members in our home. We have loved them like any other person in our lives. We have seen kids that we love make bad choices. Some keep making those mistakes, not all have been involved with gangs. Other kids have changed their lives completely because of a caring adult taking the time to invest in them; to take them out to lunch, to guide them, to play with them, to be a solid stable adult in their life. For me that is what will change the lives of these kids, to show them another way to live, to have some one care enough to not automatically write them off because of how they look or act. To take the time, may be years for some, to invest in a relationship that is different from any other relationship in their life. Patience is key; knowing why kids get involved in gangs and who gangs work helps too.

I can't begin to tell you how many places some SNAG (Sensitive, New Age Guy/Gal) has told me are "sacred Chumash sites." I'm as anti-development as the next guy, but these false claims of "sacred space" are irritating, and far more prevalent than real archaeological sites. The Chumash village that was nearby was over near the sewage treatment plant, and was largely destroyed when they were putting the Marine base on what is now UCSB during WWII.

United offers a Pet Safe program. They do have restrictions, so contact them early on in the planning stage. When I have shipped or purchased a puppy that needs to be shipped, I have chosen to fly with the puppy. A puppy that small easily fits into a carry on pet carrier. Please do the responsible thing and check out the breeder, through the parent club of the specific breed. Ask if health testing has been done and ask to see the results. Are both parents champions of record (AKC)? Ask if you can contact previous puppy buyers. Ask to see the purchase contract, to make sure it protects both of you. I have been involved in owning, breeding and showing dogs all my life. And yes, I have done more than my share of rescuing of both purebred and mixbred dogs.

I have to second the idea of getting a puppy from a breeder you know/trust or have good referrals to. And from closer to home, if you can. A friend got an Aussie from a "midwest" breeder, shipped to him. Sweetest dog, but he is gigantic, nearly twice the size of a "normal" Aussie, has multiple joint problems, and while a happy dog for the first few years, has developed severe anxiety. I know people actively involved in showing dogs that have either shipped or received puppies, with great results. I disagree with the idea that those of us who want a specific type of dog should all go to the shelters and adopt either a pit mix or a chi mix. I'm glad people save them. but I prefer to choose my own type. Those same people likely "bred" their own children, rather than adopting ...

Our first lab was from a breeder in the midwest - however, we had driven there (for other reasons) and saw the farm and drove back with the puppy - greatest dog ever! Beautiful, good with other dogs and kids, we could have worked on his training a little more, but overall really good dog! He was also under $100 compared to places here were probably ~$400 then! And I've known at least 2 people who spent a lot of money on labs from breeders in CA - one had hip dysplasia and the other does not get along with other dogs - and she was well socialized as a puppy! So I'm not all about the CA breeders! (the hip dysplasia one got his money back and some vet bills paid for - but the dog passed away at 6 yrs old because of genetic health issues!)

I don't know what breed is being considered, but I would be extremely hesitant to do any thing like this. 1) Sight unseen? 2) AKC 'approval' of the breeder? 3) Breed association 'approval'? There are so many possible pitfalls. Please consider visiting DAWG. That group is remarkable and very worthy. The dogs there are treated so well and their adoption procedures are fantastic. While I'm at the podium I'd like to say that people should always keep in mind that adding a dog to the household is like adding a child. They need to be considered as important, long-term members of the family.

I volunteered at the shelter for years and believe in rescuing. That said, if you want a pure bred, this doesn't seem the best route to go. Is there no one closer breeding the type of dog you want? If not, consider driving out to get the dog. Until you see the parents, living conditions, owners and puppies, you have no idea what you're getting yourself into. Or choose a breeder that someone you know has used. Shipping a live animal just doesn't seem right. (Also, Beware the Amish? Really? My parents got two collies from an Amish family (the breed collies & make butter to support the family) and they are healthy, and the family was great. My family is from PA, so they could visit the pups prior to taking them home, though. The second sentence is totally valid, though.)

Deckers is definitely dependent on the whims of 14-yr old girls and surfers and the wave of success they were riding has broken and is now washing up the beach. Their stock peaked at 120 per share in 2011 and went to a low of 30 last year. Their business is currently solid but but I would bet that their expansion plans were developed during 2011. They will have to find additional products and get Jack Johnson to wear them if they want to get back to the days of wine and roses.

I hope Edhat will indulge me re the "no quote" rule, one I've never really understood. I'm sure you can easily find the rest of the comments on that thread (and the earlier one I referenced) , including your vulgar retort to my question. You know what really irks me about Santa Barbara? If you do good things like employ acouple people, donate some money you can do just about anything you want and no one seems to care. Dogs are not killed in Santa Barbara shelters for reasons of overcrowding. There is no surplus dog problem in Santa Barbara. The whole "breeders are killers" meme is simply false. If you want a predictable dog with health records and history, a reputable breeder is the best option. Of course, shelter dogs can be great pets, and I would never discourage anyone from adopting a shelter dog, but there is simply no reason to equate a reputable dog breeder with overpopulation in shelters. There is more than enough demand for dogs to go around to cover both shelter dogs and purebred dogs.

Too many variables in ordering a dog like that. Best is to find a breeder in California and go to their property, make sure that the puppies have been raised correctly with plenty of people time and play time. Then pick one out that matches your energy level and temperament. Of course I would prefer that you go to one of the local shelters and get a puppy from them, but I understand that some people need to have a specific breed for various reasons. I haven't ever had a puppy in my house because I always rescue older dogs, but from the stories I hear I haven't missed anything.

Why would she go to Joni Gray for a recommendation? Joni Gray who oversaw the loss of millions in the LHCDC scandal? As the old saying goes, "Show me your company and I'll tell you what you are." Joni Gray needs to be held accountable for what happened in Lompoc. Where did all that money go? Did Ms. Waller know any of the dirty details of that mess? Maybe that's why she's leaving.

Beware Amish too Any breeder willing to ship to some one unknown in winter is only interested in the health of your wallet. Google "mid west puppy mills" and think about if that is what you want to support. And no you are not saving a puppy from a puppy mill, you are buying old stock so they have room for new stock.

PLEASE don't buy a dog. There are so many reasons not too. You are supporting an industry that is not worth supporting. We all know that it is the Santa Barbara elitist thing to do, but walk down to a local shelter or an adoption agency and adopt a dog that needs someone. It will save you a ton of money and throw your support somewhere else where it really is needed.

I was raised in Santa Maria, and a complete bookworm, so many years ago when a friend and I were out and she spied some TV series star - I forget his name, but he was on that Martian series in the 60's?- and went gaga, but was afraid to ask for his autograph (why-on-earth I couldn't imagine) I offered to do it for her. He autographed her napkin, which I gave her, feeling I had done a good deed. Then the man left, and several people descended upon me, chewing my head off for the rude thing I had done! I was about 17 at the time - I never forgot the rude, humiliating treatment I received. But neither would I ever, ever ask for anyone's autograph again! As if. Personally, I thought the man seemed pleased at the time...

It is a very bad idea to purchase a puppy from a breeder you have never met, from conditions you cannot verify, from parents you have never seen. The midwest is home to many puppy mills. I am not saying this because I am against purebred dogs or against buying a puppy from a breeder. I am saying it because you just have no way of knowing what your are getting. You can find a reputable breeder in California for any dog breed you might be interested in. Do your homework first. Find out about the breeder and his/her dogs. Get the health certifications from the breeder -- current hips, elbows, eyes, heart certifications for both parents. Look at the conditions the puppies are raised in. Check the pedigrees for both parents. If you really think this is a good breeder, go there yourself and pick up the puppy, take it home on the plane in a sherpa bag with all of the required health certificates.

Check very, very carefully the breeder; ask for references that you can contact of other buyers - by phone, whether they have had the dog shipped. What kind of dog? That would have something to do with it --- some are simply very nervous, being in a cage for that length of time away from everything he's known before may be very traumatic. I used to take my two basenjis with me on flights across country, about 6 hours in a crate from LAX to Boston. One was fine, one was very nervous for days afterwards and was sick in the crate - but both of these were adults.

My neighbor has done it a few times, but the dogs were large breed and much bigger than 3 or 4 pounds. Also, they knew the breeder and had been around other dogs bred by this breeder. Is it a once it has left my hands it is your problem, or do they guarantee a live healthy puppy at your end. Please talk to the vet you plan on using and get advice on that kind of shipping for a dog that young and small. My dogs have all been rescues - large mixed breed rescues at that - but I do understand people who do not want to take that on and would rather purchase a puppy. Please people, don't make this a judgment on what they are doing, just offer advice from experience if you have any.

So, this darkens the picture of living downtown. Up 'til now, these attacks, gang-related or not, have been stabbings, with guns not used. Stabbings are one-person directed; bullets have a greater range. Living in the general downtown, eastside, westside, too, going for walks after dark with one's small dog, have become quite a bit more fearsome. It will be interesting... to read the city government's reaction, attempts to reassure the citizenry of Santa Barbara. Indeed, respect and sorrow for the person who died and his family, and also for the rest of us living in that general area.

Overall crime is down from the early 90s when crime rates more or less peaked. I don't know how you got "same" out of anything I wrote. At any rate, the fact that the overall violent crime rate is down dramatically (using homicides as an example: down from 9.8 homicides per 100,000 people ~1991 to 4.8 per 100,000 in 2010) is an empirical fact. This does not mean that crime in various areas may not be higher than historical norms or experience occasional increases, especially in conjunction with depressed economic activity. But to run around and crow about how the crime rate is so terrible and there's an epidemic of crime in this country and how we all need guns or whatever is disingenuous and harms any rational debate. Also worth mentioning that fully two thirds of homicides in America are committed with a firearm. Just putting that out there.

I'm a day late with this but I have a wonderful home-improvement story. My father-in-law's mother was a silent film actress, Florence Dudley, who retired to Santa Barbara many years ago. He inherited her 5 large diamonds and had one reworked into a ring for himself. Too soon thereafter the ring was lost, he knew not where. Paul was a home handy-man, always upgrading the yard and house. 20 years after losing his ring, he was doing some cement work in the backyard, digging up the earth, and - you guessed it! Turned up that ring, said it was the best improvement he ever made!

Depends on the size of the judgement if it's worth spending money on attorneys or not. It's better to find out if the person has the assets or money to pay first. The judgement is good for ten years in California (statute of limitations). If the person has assets, they have to be above and beyond what a person could keep in a bankruptcy. You can't just take their car for example unless it's worth more than 3000 bucks or something. You can't tap more than a certain percent of wages, after all the other payments like rent, child support, basic food and so forth are covered. Often what the person has is zilch which is why they defaulted in the first place.

I like that you're venturing into portraits too. And doing them in natural light has its challenges especially out in the open when fighting harsh lighting conditions. Good on you for finding shade for the boy and trying to control your light. However letting the background get brighter than the subject pulls it forward while forcing him back.... it basically makes the image appear rather flat. Dean Collins (wrote the book on sculpting with light) stressed 3 things that affect dimensionality: density, contrast and saturation. Brighter, more contrasty and colourful items appear closer than those that are dimmer, more faded and less detailed.

Yeah, we all have parents, but the human species is not possible without the precondition of earth giving us all that we depend on. Earth doesn't need us, we need the earth. Have to disagree with 491, primarily on the basis that there is no credible evidence that violence in the media contributes in any meaningful way to increased violence in society. Indeed, if this were true, the violent crime rate would actually be way up instead of down from historic highs twenty years ago. The reality is that our current hyper-connected society leads to a more "informed" (and I use that word loosely) populace that has a much higher awareness of the violence that does occur.

The Chumash village was on Mescalitan Island, most of which was indeed bulldozed to build the airbase (now Santa Barbara Airport). What's left is now the mound that houses the Goleta West Sanitary District. So, no, the Deckers headquarters is not "sacred" land, despite 560's catch-all.

Whether there is or was a Chumash burial-ground there..I wonder which parent taught those people of today, to have such disrespectful disregard for the lives & teachings of others?....Was it Mom or Dad?...And I wonder how those people would feel if they saw me in the cemetary, using their Grand-parent`s head-stone as my toilet?...It`s funny, I never hear people speak with such ignorance..I only see it online, where it`s easy to hide....

All land is/was sacred to the Chumash. The land is our literal mother. Without trees life could not exist (no oxygen), without soil and clean water, no food or life. How much can be destroyed and still allow the planet to support humans? We or our grandchildren will find out soon enough. This is utterly self-evident. Everything else is a distraction to keep us all buying stuff and driving around in our cars.

The best tartar prevention biscuit out there is the one I mention in my book "Feeding Fido and Fluffy Too". It is called TD biscuit and is sold by veterinarians. Then add a bit of apple cider vinegar to the drinking water to acidify it and you have a great tooth protection program going.

Chumash site is located on the other side of Los Carneros where the bunkers are located; to the north of the UCSB print shop. Anyone remember when there was a motocross track at that location in the 70s? Ahh, the carefree days when it was OK to run your two stroke over a burial ground... But it is true that the boys from Delco used to test the moon rover designs in the field where Deckers is building.

How about the people with guns put up a sign saying "gun free property" and then dispense some frontier justice when people try to rob them? It's a shame to have all those guns just sitting around gathering dust. As for the housing authority, don't you remember when professionals were lying and getting loans to buy rental properties, the Authority said they didn't have the resources to actually check the info on the applications? So they probably can't check for gang connections or criminal history either.

Orange County has been in all kinds of trouble ever since their pension scandal. For her to take a job there indicates how bad conditions must be at Santa Barbara. I guess $250K/yr is not what it used to be. Ventura County always promotes from Department Heads so they don't complain as much. Bringing someone in from the outside doesn't seem to help much. I guess she was fairly conservative if she is asking Lavagnino and Gray for recommendations.

Two points: a) Agree with 521 that too much of "LA" shows up on our streets. SB is fresh meat for these punks. Memes are contagious, and the gang-banger, shaved-head, bling-covered toughs are becoming more prevalent, and dangerous. More of a predator class we don't need. b) Always appreciate John Palminteri's reporting. But he's often a one-man show. The thing I do wish for from "LA" is more on-the-ground journalism plus a credible daily newspaper. Blogs like this are great, but in-depth reports by professionals are too rare. More people need to be informed about what happens every day.

Collection Attorney |

Getting a judgment is easy - collecting it more difficult. If you have identified the judgment debtor's assets (job, bank, car) you can levy on the bank account or wages and force a sale of the car (certain exemptions apply). Or you can order the debtor to appear for an Examination of Assets. All of this takes time and advance fees - you're better off paying a contingency percentage to a reputable collection agency. They have the procedures in place to do all of this and, in fact, do it on a routine basis. Depending on the size of the judgment you can negotiate the contingency fee. Obviously, they will have to pay up front costs and other fees and they will be out those if they don't collect. Depending on the debtor, sometimes it's just the matter of making sure it's reported to a credit reporting agency and/or filing a lien on assets, especially if ready assets aren't available.

If you really, I mean really, want to reduce gun violence you have to do more than give lip service to thoughts that leave you warm and fuzzy and go off as if you have contributed. If you really want to make a change, the fabric of American society needs to be reweaved. Let's start with Hollywood and limit the violence in movies and on TV. Make gun safety lessons mandatory in any media that portrays the use of firearms. Ya I know...won't happen...but it bugs me to see the Rhode's Scholars turned actors making millions from violence tell us how we must give up our 2nd Ammendment rights! Rant off!

CAL POLY is an undergrad school where pre-Vet Science students take their science & undergrad courses, then go on To UC Davis or other university for specific veterinary training and the Vet degree. If you are going to do the surgery in stages, you should only be billed for services rendered, not in advance. You might contact some of the animal advocacy groups up in SLO Co for info on help with bills. (Not quite as ritzy as SB but on it's way). Don't know of any that do but it's worth a try. Betty O'Connor has always been an old-school type of vet with a good rep. Nipomo Dog & Cat Hosp vets are beloved but are $-up-front folks. Is there an animal care column in the SB papers? Contact the columnist with info & photo of your pet and try to raise some dough that way? here's some other ideas from Humane Society's website: Have a yard sale. One's man's trash is another man's treasure. If your birthday or a holiday is near, ask for cash in lieu of a present. Sell things on an online auction site such as eBay. Consider getting a second or part-time job or working for a temp agency. Ask your employer for a salary advance. ...and how about one of those fundraising websites? from: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html

Cameras can help in prosecuting criminals but just having cameras present does not stop crime. Stupid and or desperate people will not change their actions just because someone may be watching. Just look at the recent elevator rape case in a downtown parking lot, that was all caught on camera!

Really? Sort of like if you installed cameras in banks there would be no more bank robberies?

Dave and Michelle at Macomber Karate on Hollister at Fairview were wonderful when my son was that age. He loved it there. I'd say, go visit a few and see what feels right.

Residential Dryer Fire |

I agree the problem is more than likely a clogged lint trap/line. Those machines are not that old. The residents are mostly elderly people. Most people clean out the lint screen after each load. However, the line vented to the roof should be inspected and/or cleaned by facility workers every month. My two cents' worth. My dryer is 22 years old - I clean it regularly.

Why can people be so sure all Hispanics are from Mexico? A woman here in Carp was ragging on a man, "I've been here 20 yrs and you people come and ruin the place." When he replied he was 9th generation in Carpinteria, she shut up and walked away.

If each of us do a random act of kindness when the opportunity arises maybe the world would get used to it. Just a smile at someone in thegrocery store could make a difference in their day! Let's all go out and try it.

If you want a safer neighborhood, install video cameras. Not more guns. This wouldn't have happened in front of a camera.

Unmarked Police Car |
2013-02-20 08:36 AM |
|
The police often use unmarked cars for obvious reasons. The vehicle code does not permit them to use unmarked cars for the regular enforcement of basic traffic laws. That requires a plainly marked car equiped with red lights, siren etc. That does not mean that an officer in such an an unmarked car cannot make a traffic stop, however it would generally have to be something significant, e.g. drunk driving, reckless driving, etc. and generally one that occurred in their immediate presence, and is highly discouraged if that officer is not in full police uniform.

Grocery store, ice cream - your flavor but I'd opt for vanilla bean - and gooey caramel sauce, YUM! Heat the caramel sauce for easier pouring. Some grocery stores or CVS sell the bags of caramels, grab one or two bags and turn on the music and instant heaven.

Vets, doctors, etc, want money upfront now because so many people don't pay their bills. If you're stung enough times it has to become a cash business to survive. Good luck getting the teeth cared for, a couple good suggestions here.
