SB Airport Travel Deals

2013-02-14 11:30 PM

Whatever travel deals you find, keep in mind that flights later in the day are more likely to be delayed or cancelled. Really messed up my recent international flights from SBA. Hurriedly had to take the Airbus on short notice and United, nor their insurance carrier Allianz consider that there's compensation due. Just for the Airbus, not for hassles, inconveniences. Unbelievable they get away with it. Also note with travel insurance often you don't know what it covers for sure until a claim is filed.

Green Parrot

2013-02-14 11:17 PM

Birds are far down the list when it comes to people taking their loss seriously. I did have more than a few kind people who tried to help me reunite with my Eastern rosella, when she flew out of my house Feb 2012. I think by now someone has found my bird and has her caged. (She is one of the prettier parrots.)

I wish people would share their sightings of exotic parrots more often. Who knows? You might help a lost pet find its way home to a broken-hearted owner.

All that said: I urge everyone NEVER to purchase a bird to keep as a pet. (My rosella found me, many years ago, by landing in my pepper tree.) It is cruel and unnatural for birds to be caged. I hope these "wild" parrots continue to make a go of it in Santa Barbara. And I hope that the birds-as-pets trade dies a necessary death.

Math with Kumon

2013-02-14 10:41 PM

My children went to Kumon for a couple of years and it was very helpful. For several reasons, they hadn't learned math facts at the appropriate time. So this was remedial work. Once the math facts were mastered, we stopped the lessons. They did very well in junior high & high school math, including AP Calculus. The drills are no more onerous than practicing scales when learning an instrument. They didn't always like it at the time, but now they say they are glad that they did it, as it allowed them to master advanced math far more easily.
One child also needed remedial language work. We did the language program for one year. (I don't know that it's still offered.) It was expensive, but it made a huge difference and helped bring her up to grade level.

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 09:35 PM

OP here. Thanks everyone for mostly very constructive, receptive comments. I know how frustrating and contentious any issue relating to our dogs and their owners is, so I understand even the frustration behind the crude comments that were deleted.
But in order to find our way to improved animal policies, laws and services for everyones' well-being, we have to engage in a civil, constructive dialogue. I hope I contributed to that. I will be thinking about how to continue moving the discussion forward, and maybe working to promote improved laws.
As far as posting pictures of the offending dog owner, I am reluctant to do that in case there is eventually legal action against him. Also, I am a bit afraid of him, and don't want him to retaliate since he would recognize me. It was pretty obvious he does not play by the rules.
And I am sorry for the typos in my piece!! I did not have a proofreader.

Missing Sonoma Man

Hi - I am Jason's wife. I am so desperate to find Jason. Would you please take a look at the facebook page I created and really look at his picture?

I need to know if you are sure this is the man you saw.

I was going to do a search in Santa Rosa at the park this weekend, but if this lead is credible, I will be coming to Santa Barbara.

Thank you all so much for your help. This has been a nightmare and I just need to get Jason home.

Math with Kumon

2013-02-14 09:13 PM

Our son did Kumon for a couple of years. Grades 4-6. It was painful at times for him, and more so for us! That said, he improved his math skills a LOT. After Kumon, he found math much easier and was able to do a lot of factoring in his head, because of all the drilling of math facts. They do not move ahead until they have mastered the current level. I can't say that he liked it, in fact it was drudgery at times for our family, but later on he actually thanked us for making him do Kumon!
He's in H.S. now and is doing great in math.

Horrible Valentine's Date

2013-02-14 08:17 PM

Don't be discouraged, my son. All men have been bitten by this same spider.

First the anesthetic, her killer outfit, perfume and so on, followed by being eaten alive and regurgitated. The effects are immediate, acute and painful, but rarely fatal and most of the time short-lived. The hardest part is being paralyzed and unable to protect yourself while it all goes down.

It builds up an immunity so in the future this same bite won't be nearly as bad as the first time. Soon, you'll be able to recognize this spider and avoid it. Such is the nature of life, my son.

Horrible Valentine's Date

2013-02-14 07:59 PM

About twenty years ago I gave my date a dozen long-stemmed roses upon arrival for our Valentine's evening out. We had a couple glasses of wine at the Plow & Angel and then upstairs for dinner, dessert, coffee, and an aperitif. The bill was around $250, which was a lot of money for me at the time. It was before 9PM and I suggested that we head to Soho to hear some tunes and she says....."I have to be honest with you, I have a boyfriend and I need to get back home." I dropped her off at her place, headed to SoHo by my lonesome, and ended up meeting my future (and current) wife. Years later I saw my "Valentine" at Harry's sitting on a stool by herself drinking shots of gin - she looked as sad as anyone could look with her swollen face, droopy/watery eyes, and permanent frown. Like my mother used to say: "Thank God for unanswered prayers."

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 07:48 PM

Thank you for writing this and I, too, hope you'll post a photo or at the very least give a clear description of the dog and the owner! I don't go that often to Hendrys with my small dog, always on leash, but would like to be forewarned. (I've stopped going to Tabano Hollow because of one owner's dog that is allowed to attack and knock down others.)

The only way there may be changes is if people write to the SB City Council demanding that the city Animal Control, a part of the SBPD, be a valued part of the SBPD, not, as now, an often ignored stepchild. It's wrong that its not available on weekends when most people have the time to walk their dogs.

Cam Sanchez has shown clearly that he responds only when there is political pressure. He gives monthly reports to the SB City Council. It could be helpful to have people there at that time, making a presentation at the public comment about the need for a more effective Animal Control and enforcement of the off leash requirements.

How can we put together a group willing/able to do something; any ideas?

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 07:01 PM

Agree with the sentiments about Animal Control. My husband and another neighbor were charged and bitten by a neighborhood dog. Each incident required stitches and antibiotics. Each time we called Animal Control. The first time AC told us we had to "see the dog outside without a leash." I saw him the next day and called AC. They drove out, found the dog and...did nothing but return him to the owner. Could it be because she was a young, attractive blond? I have zero respect for AC.

I am beginning to wonder if this has any thing to do with the acoustic testing the navy is doing off our coast. They publicly acknowledged that the testing can loud enough and intense enough to be mistaken for earthquakes and can even be heard onshore. Otherwise, I can't think of any sonic booms that can be heard SIMULTANEOUSLY over a 600 mile range. Sound takes time to travel. And aviation sonic booms take time to travel just like all other sound waves.

I called the police in Sonma County around 3pm to tell them about the post. I ended up giving the URL to the woman who answered the phone and she will take it from there. - They may or may not contact Edhat for additional information.

In my humble opinion, if you see something call the police. Don't report it on a message board and expect someone else to see it. Take responsibility and act. In an emergency situation someone who takes charge and is the "hero" designates someone to call 911, because if they don't sometimes NO one does anything.

I should not have been the one to call the police. And I hope I was not the only person who took some action and called. That would be terrible.

I regret not posting that I called and I am sorry to have not informed other.

She saw you coming pal. Why didn't you pick up the signals she most assuredly gave you that a) you aren't the guy b) she's playing you and c) she thought your date sucked and made up a story about a boyfriend so you wouldn't call her anymore.

Don't be a victim and refuse to participate anymore. Instead, learn to observe reality, and to act accordingly to what reality is. How do you determine reality? By what someone does, not necessarily what they say.

And why was your first date on Valentines day? Are you trying to put the pressure on? You should have been at the coffee shop for a first date, or the beach or a cafe for no more than an hour. Not at a romantic Valentines Day set-up fest - dinner, movie, sex - YAWN!. How original. If this is your formula you can look forward to more rejections.

Signed-

The Love Doctor

Years ago, my current boyfriend really needed New Year's Eve to be special, but there was nowhere to go that we could afford at the last minute. We ended up going to the drive-in (so that should give you an idea how long ago this was), and the evening's movies were slasher films. He wanted to make-out and more anyway, to blood and gore. I have seldom spent a less romantic or special night. We're still friends anyway, 40 years later, but we're both married to other people. Forcing a night to be "special" often results in it being special in an unintended way -- spectacular failure.

If they move faster than a human can run and have a decent range than I welcome them to the quiver of law enforcement tools. Much cheaper than additional cars and far greater visibility for the officers to see what's happening.

They may look silly but for the crooks who get chased down and arrested by a trikke-bound cop the silly factor won't make much difference.

Math with Kumon

2013-02-14 04:37 PM

Hi, we used Kumon for about 3 years for both our boys, to strengthen their math facts and accuracy. I honestly could not see any measurable results. They were both very strong in math, but it's so independent and self-directed - they expect the kids to do all the work, and then each week they correct the work. It's very repetitive, and it did become a chore, or drudgery, to the point where we had to bribe them to do it. We didn't feel for what we got out of it, that it was worth the money. I agree with Kahn academy, and there are other very valuable math resources online for students. Save your money for the serious stuff- like prepping for the SAT.

Math with Kumon

2013-02-14 04:36 PM

Like with anything, Kumon is not a fit for all kids. It requires work everyday, and some kids dont do well with that regime, and some parents dont do well with it either. It is 100% skills only. first you add one digit without carrying, then you get to carry.....then you get 2 digits...then two digits without carrying. It is all skills, no frills. It is not designed for kids with learning disabilities such as autism....but Lindamood Bell is. As a math teacher, I have seen some kids thrive using the Kumon method, and others find it a burden. I would suggest that if Kumon is chosen, then let it be the only extra thing your kids does afterschool...because it takes a lot of thought and brainwork, and it is exhausting for kids. Learning facts takes time....not sure why the OP wants to do that more quickly....

Christ, get a cheap moped, and put training wheels on it if balance is such a big deal... You could outfit the entire PD with the cost of a single trikke. It was beyond awkward (but not Jerry Springer awkward - we were all annoyingly adult about it). He told me that sometimes relationships are complicated. I had been calling Vandenburg and Edwards AFBs when they started to really ramp up a few years ago, but after receiving no explanation each time, realized the calls were pretty pointless. It is so sad that one of the most enjoyable pleasures, walking your dog on the beach or in a neighborhood, has turned into something we have to fear.

I am sure many people who have had a bad experience have given up taking their dog to the beach. Seems to be the way things are going in SB. Where are all these uncivil people who lack common courtesy coming from, it never used to be this way in SB.

Maybe we need to have leash laws for the beaches and provide a doggy park for the big dogs to socialize and take out their aggression on each other. Elings Park would be the perfect place.

Bathtub Refinishing

I recently needed my bath refinished so I used this thread to call around. For our bath (no shower surround) that needed to be also be stripped before finishing: BathCrest quoted $620, Classic Tub in TO wanted $460, and Pacific Porcelain wanted $475. Also there was one company "White Rock" that quoted $275 but after some research discovered horrible, horrible reviews.

Being a cheapo I ended up doing it myself with a $25 Rust-O-Leum kit and about 8 hours of my time. Probably not as nice as these places, but a thousand times better than before.

Gift Card Payback

2013-02-14 03:12 PM

Most often when people make purchases with a combination of gift cards and cash, and expect cash in return, it's part of a long-understood scam in the retail world of how to shuffle products and make money. It works like this:

Buy something on sale at one store (or cheaper someplace else). When the sale is over, return it without a receipt. Accept a gift card after complaining when they try and give you the lowest price in the last 30 days. Do this a few times, stock up gift cards.

Buy something more expensive with several gift cards and some cash. Keep the receipt. Return it to another store and demand cash.

You've just funneled a few (sometimes hundred) dollars out of a retail chain.

Chain retailers closed this loop by requiring any return that was partially bought on gift card to be refunded onto gift card.

440P - I think your terrifying violence is misplaced. You don't stab or maim a dog simply for being a dog (albeit not well-trained). It is 100% the owner's responsibility. Gift Card Payback

2013-02-14 02:33 PM

Law notwithstanding, some places will give you back the entire balance if you paid with cash or a card they accept. Nordstrom, Saks, that type of store which prides itself on customer service will do this. All you have to do is ask.

But yeah, for long time (maybe 15 years?) most stores will only refund less than $5 of a remaining balance on a gift card, regardless of what you use to pay for it.

That's really not legal, because the law stipulates that cash will be refunded. But try to tell them that AND get them to do it. :(

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 01:57 PM

This was some time ago but I took my cat for a walk in her enclosed stroller in a residential area where it was attacked by a large unleashed dog. I used the choke chain on the dog and my left knee to wrestle the dog away but my cat lost a couple of lives and control of her intestinal contents. Honestly, I thought he was going to chew right through the 600 denier nylon or at least collapse the stroller.

I see irresponsible people inflicting their dogs upon others all the time, in Santa Barbara. I walked past one vehicle in a parking lot on the way to my own car when a dog lunged through the open window (all the way down) and barely missed my face.

One more anecdote: there's a lady that I've seen around the downtown area that walks multiple dogs but when she's waiting to cross at a corner, the dogs are not on the curb but actually in the street. I don't understand. How can one not see what a danger that is to animals completely reliant upon humans to keep them safe. I hope she doesn't do dog-walking as a means of income.

Math with Kumon

2013-02-14 01:52 PM

I used it for a 3rd grader with high functioning autism for 6 months. We went to the one on State & Los Positas. My child was about a year behind on math. My child did not improve at all. He continued week after week with "+3's" work sheets. As he never scored 100% on quizzes, he was never advanced. We faithfully did the worksheets nightly which was somewhat painful for him & us. The atmosphere felt like a "puppy mill"--overcrowded kids sitting at tables with tutors that weren't really there to tutor but to check work. Two years later, my child is getting A's & B's in math with a heck of a lot of hard work and Lindamood Bell. Not only was Kumon not helpful, it sapped the joy right out of learning and it eroded our child's faith in us as we promised our child Kumon would definitely help. That said, if you have a kid that learns best with rote memorization and grilling, it might be ok but not if your child learns a little different.

He is really sweet with me around our property but oh...take him out on a walk and he wants to throw down with every dog out there. Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 12:35 PM

I have a small service dog who was attacked unprovoked by an off leash German Shepherd. The owner tried to deny the dog was his. It is against the penal code if your dog attacks a service dog. My dog lost her spleen and a third of her intestine. It cost $6,000.

Plus she was upset after the attack and bit my hands which became infected despite immediate antibiotic by mouth and I had to be on 5 days of IV antibiotic.

The police responded (Sunday, Animal Control is off) . The DA pressed charges against the owner and he plead guilty to two counts and was ordered to pay back the $6,000.

Had my dog just been a pet, my only option would have been civil court.

Thank goodness the dog you saw on the beach was not injured, but it is traumatic for dog and owner to be assaulted like that. That man has an aggressive dog and is not controlling it or using a leash. That is not fair to others.

Elaine - First, If law enforcement had to do an investigation every time a dog got into a fight with another dog they would have no time for anything else. Second, while reading your story I could not help but notice some inconsistencies like "He continued to laugh and got in his car. As he grew increasingly hostile and verbally abusive". "Even as he drove off, he laughed and yelled, "I used to be a park ranger, it's not big deal." How can a person who is leaving be hostile, how can a person who is laughing be verbally abusive? If you were provoking him even though he was doing nothing illegal maybe you were the one being hostile.

Someday we'll advance to the point where if an individual no longer wants to live, he or she will entering a caring, benevolent end-of-life process, under hospice-like supervision, so that the life can be ended with dignity and the indiviudal won't have to throw themselves in front of a train or jump off a bridge or whatever crude, inhuman method they desperately choose. Death with dignity, not on the railroad tracks.

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 11:47 AM

Our dog (on-leash as required by law) was attacked by an off leash uncontrollable dog. Our dog ultimately killed the off-leash dog. The owners of the dead dog threatened us but after speaking with Animal Control they were found to be the liable party. Thankfully level heads prevailed and there was never a civil suit over the matter. The flagrant thumbing the nose at leash laws in SB is ridiculous. I see it all over the place and more often than not the owners of the illegally off-leash dog are rude and even combative. We are so lucky to have so many great legally off-leash areas it makes me sick the resident's here feel so entitled that the leash laws do not apply to them endangering their dog as well as other dogs.

Animal Control Laws

2013-02-14 11:46 AM

I agree with you, the laws and priorities regarding animals in this area are abysmal. The city and county had all the time in the world to prepare reports and set up committees and attend meetings when they were looking to enact spay/neuter laws. I see them patrolling in their trucks all the time, why aren't the officers available to attend actual problems? For awhile, they were going DOOR-TO-DOOR! checking for unlicensed animals.
A number of years ago, had a dog attacked in a similar manner on the Mission lawn, the owner too laughed it off, claiming his dog had done no harm. But in fact, my dog became dog aggressive, and I could no longer take her around other dogs. I recently had another jerk with his unleashed dog at the Daily Grind, go after my dog, and only by kicking it was I able to get it to back off. He, and the business manager, did nothing. The owner again laughed it off. It seems to be the 20-something guys ... GRRR!
I rarely take my dog to "doggie places" like Hendry's and the Wilcox anymore, and am considering carrying pepper spray.

Very interesting read Elaine, thank you for writing. I do think it would be very difficult to charge/cite dog owners for dog vs dog attacks as it's kind of their nature in some way.

However, I am absolutely fed up with the jerk dog owners around here who take zero responsibility for their pet. How hard is it to say sorry and pull their dog away. They are the ones giving the dog and those breeds a bad name.

Jeez, what a horrific story! My heart goes out to the poor pup! Unfortunately, dogs are treated only as "personal property"as far as the law goes. So, there is probably no recourse against the bitting dog's owner for the medical bills (if any). HOWEVER, it sounds like the dog was illegally off-leash. This in itself would be a citeable offense. Did your photos show the dog off-leash where it was prohibited? If so, hopefully you got the license plate # as the jerk drove off. You might be able to at least get a citation issued for that.

I'd even go so far as to post your photos of the dog and it's owner here so us law-abiding and caring dog owners know who to avoid. Not sure if you can, but its worth a try.

So was a bike being stolen the best reason they can come up with? I get the point, I understand the sentiment, but I don't think they're enough to warrant this unless the police have had $215,000 worth of damages done within the last 20 years at least (they'll have to replace the gates again by this amount of time). Somehow I strongly doubt that's true.

More information on the reasons behind why this is 100% necessary would be MUCH APPRECIATED, besides that "cars have been tampered with" (vague) and ONE bicycle stolen.

Oak Tree Disease

2013-02-14 09:57 AM

'flagging' refers to a branch tip that has been broken or has lost its connection to its vascular system support. The branch tip then wilts and hangs down like a 'flag'. Flagging is not a disease.

Artemisia nailed it. This is just tip die-off, it will not transfer to older branches, and is caused by an insect 'girdling' the bark , thus cutting off vascular flow to the tissue past the girdled area.

It is not serious, just unsightly. The Co Ag advisors can confirm this. No need to hire an arborist unless there are other problems suspected of compromising the tree like poor drainage, soil compaction or paving over the root zone, poorly done pruning, etc.

Trail maintenance is hard work and often the only reward is criticism, as seen above. Every trail we use was once cut by someone where no trail existed before. I will leave it to others who have the endurance to deal with the attacks. I will stick to leading the hikes.

Thanks again to Montecito Trails and others for providing and maintaining the trails we all enjoy. Please join and support these groups. And thank you again for the kind words, Chumash Coyote and others.

374228P - Don't be so quick to be agressive about these things. The engine failures that cause this generally come on fast and often with little or no warning. Normally it is better to belch out steam for a few miles and get safely off the freeway (or at least out of traffic lanes and onto a wide section of shoulder) that to stop in place. You usually won't make much more than a few miles before the water and glycol residues short out your spark plugs anyway.

I had this happen last year with no warning on a well-maintained car due to a head gasket blowing - cost $400 to fix and did no additional damage to drive a few miles off the freeway, and no risk of getting hit in traffic or dealing with a tow off of the busy freeway.

Car crashes are not very environmentally friendly under the best of circumstances.

Glamorous Baby Sea Lion

2013-02-14 09:08 AM

ok, actually it is Hollywood Beach, I live there.

I did not interfere, I was among several couples who were walking the beach at sunset, which I do nearly every day along Hollywood Beach.

I was not the first to call. The Sea Lion was having trouble, he appeared either very tired or sick. When I came upon the sea lion another couple had already called and they were told he was just tired. Another couple came by who was used to seeing seals and said he did not look ok as he was struggling a bit. So, for good measure I called again to make sure.

I didn't "help" him or touch him. I did call the proper authorities to be sure he wasn't sick or injured and I'm sure if they came to check they would have known what to do better than me or some other passers by, which is mostly what I was worried about. There are lot of dogs and traffic on that beach.

Thank you for the complimetns, I am glad I had my camera too! A nice experience overall.

What we see here is cooling fluid getting into the engine chamber and "steaming" off and out the exhaust pipe.

If this ever happens, immediately shut down the vehicle. Only worse and more expensive damage will occur. He probably only had a blown gasket (material that seperates the engine head from the block) but by over heating and leaving engine on, he may have warped or cracked the metal.

Teens Arrested for Vandalism

I live in the neighborhood and had called the City numerous times regarding the constant graffiti vandalism on Perry Ford's Calle Real wall, fire hydrants, light standards, communication boxes and the sidewalks and curbs.
It's is hard to believe that the Judges / DA does not prosecute to a higher level. I hope the LAME PARENTS, who live on Apple Grove, and their off spring pay financially and with serious jail time.

Specialty Citrus and Fruit Grafting

2013-02-14 07:41 AM

KCOY 12 had a story this morning about a seminar/demonstration of how to graft citrus tress. One of the organizers had a tree with 100 different kinds of apples. I like KCOY over KEYT because they give more Santa Barbara local news although I just spent 15 mins looking for the link on their site to no avail. I know it was in SLO and I think it was at Cal Poly? Good luck.

Specialty Citrus and Fruit Grafting

The Valencia orange tree we planted died, or at least the Valencia did. The tree grew large and fruited revealing that the root stock had been Pomelo, a pretty useless citrus. I have always wanted to cut it down and graft different citrus on the new growth. Go for the graft!

Specialty Citrus and Fruit Grafting

2013-02-14 07:34 AM

Fruit salad tree? Why not grow two normal dwarf trees? Multiple grafts are difficult to manage, one often outperforming others, and the nectarine plum apricot is even more of a challenge since the species are pretty far apart and intergrafting may be impossible. Multiple fruit varieties on a single tree is much easier, 4'way apple or peach-peach-nectarine, citrus-citrus, etc. There is a super dwarf peach out there that will produce a half dozen or so full size fruit on a tree under three feet tall. check online for pre-grafts, you'll save a year of growing time.

California Rare Fruit Growers has an active local chapter with beaucoup hands on experience, camaraderie, and community.

Specialty Citrus and Fruit Grafting

Look up "bud grafting". Sunset Western Garden book will probably have photos and how-to's.

Stone fruits (apricots, peaches, etc) require "stick" grafts and are usually more successful. But any amateur can do it with a little Youtube or photo help. However, forwarned: often one graft will prove more vigorous and take over from the other two :)

A pedestrian was struck by a train ...

Since the tracks have been bringing trains here since 1887, I think everyone knows the "Iron Horses" won't be swerving to miss them. Hard to not know what will happen if you don't move when the whistle blows. My guess is, most are suicides; exception being the ones trying to get their dogs off the tracks; we've had 2 of those here in Carp, including my neighbor.

Medical Alert Bracelet

2013-02-14 02:15 AM

I am a caregiver. Suggestions for a name other than "patient would be good."

This is personal so I hope you can see what I mean--

Client is used a lot, OP and critics. So is Patient. It sounds like a money relationship, but I think Hospice uses it, and the word patient. As a family caregiver, I see the down side! I've used some local services and 'client' is a good term. But when they're dying they're a patient.

I know I'm not the only person here who deals with this.

"client" may sound bad. I use patient or client or their first names, or MOM and DAD, AUNT and UNCLE. Give us better ideas for names please

Bless you, OP. Thank you so much for caring so much. I would do what you do.

family caregivers thank people like you. Lots will get there and lots will never have that contact, connection and Responsibility. they just won't get it.

it can be Horrible, but how can family ignore it? I can't, and the same is true of hundreds, proabaly thousands of neighbors.
I know my family's lucky to have me helping and knowing a lot. everyone needs written last wishes.

Hope this gets read tho its old. Hope it makes some people to act. and maybe be extra compassionat

and if you need life alert button (help i fell and can't get up) call cottage hospital!! they do it with volunteers, pretty affordable.

get a big bright poster in the house about meds and medical problems, put it on the refrigerator, the emergency people say.
there must be local places to make or sell the bracelets! And have a note in the wallet or purs
