Endocrinologist for Hashimoto's

2013-02-12 11:40 PM

Dr. Mark Wilson, also of sansum. I'm not fan of sansum generally but they do have some wonderful docs and he is one of them. Dr. Wilson diagnosed and treated my wife for thyroid cancer. His advice was cogent, he was a caring and a very effective practitioner and has remained so for the 5yrs of followup.

Yuck. The grammar police here on Edhat are ruining the forum experience, and that's coming from someone who values the ability to write well. Worrying about the writing skills of your neighbor might be distracting you from the content of their contribution. If you're passionate about grammar/punctuation, donate to the local schools or volunteer to help a child learn. That seems like a more suitable outlet for your 'hobby', doesn't it?

I've always laughed at the sign 'Slow Children Playing', your twist is funny as well! My favorite is 'Men Working', when the next thing you see is a group sitting on their lunch coolers, texting. :)

Mentoring Groups

To the poster, start with the parents. Most wayward children who are getting lost are a direct reflection of a problem in the home. If that is the case, then CADA's mentoring program is wonderful as a start, but perhaps a call to CPS is in order. It is hard to tell what is meant by lost, but if you mean abandoned, or missing adult supervision, then call CPS. 12 olds are still children, and the responsibility of their parents.

Parking Cameras

2013-02-12 05:02 PM

Paint gets "sun beat" whether its parked or driven.

GPS is more a curate than 30'.

Once parked in a limited time zone in SB, you must move to another block before expiration of the time limit to be in compliance with the restriction. You can move across the street if its to the next block and be ok, but not simply to the other side of the road or up/down the street within the same block. If you have any question about how it works, just speak to a "metermaid" or call parking enforcement. It's pretty simple, really.

I thought there were two camera carts, but maybe it's just one. In any case, you can no longer know if you're "safe" by looking for chalk, as you could easily be tagged by a camera and not know it.

What I really hate is the street sweeper restrictions that are enforced when the street is often not even swept.

I understand that City of SB gains more municipal revenue (per capita) via parking envforcement than any other US city.

As a 15 year M/C rider of 1200cc bikes, I can tell you that the ONLY way to become a proficient rider is by miles ridden on the road AFTER a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class. The class situation is great, but nothing can subsititute riding time. I hope she decides to buy a bike on her off-duty days . Additionally, there is absolutely NO REASON for a municipal Police like SB should need these monster highway bikes. 400cc enduros, 650cc or 800cc "city bikes" are more useful in the City... Unfortunately, EGOS prevail when purchasing Police Bikes. The Hondas they use are great HIWAY bikes though.

Thank you Comment 373784 for stating exactly what I was going to! This system of the GPS cameras is not 100% accurate and the tickets are very easy to fight because you can be parked in the same spot hours later after moving your car and the device cannot tell. They mostly use them now for unpaid registration and that is what they should stick to! I have already fought this stupid machine that the SBPD spent thousands of dollars on and won. Forcible rape and statutory rape are two different animals. If you're 17 and sleep with your 17 year old girlfriend, it's rape. Every kid under 18 who has sex at all is either a rape victim or a rapist. A whole nation of rapists and victims I guess, since pre-18 sex is as common as fleas on a dog.

Oh by the way- your victim daughter IS having sex before 18, and so is your son the rapist.

801 - as much as I agree with what you are saying, the "hit and run" charge will be a slam dunk (unless the defense can somehow prove it wasn't his car that hit the man).

He is not being charged with the killing of Mr. Chavez, just fleeing the scene of a serious accident and tampering with evidence.

But yes, I think there is MUCH more to this story that someone out there knows about but isn't fessing up. There was a reason he was staggering about in the freeway....

No I don't think it would be an easy one for a jury.

When driving down highway you have a"reasonable expectation" that the traffic is flowing the legal direction, people will be going the speed limit (more or less), following the laws, and that pedestrians (drunk, injured or just taking a short cut), won't be stumbling across the roadway.

Neither party in this case is blameless. It's not kind little old man vs upstanding coach of the community. They are both at fault. But a jury can't render a just verdict with half the facts suppressed.

Fine Black Soot

2013-02-12 04:07 PM

Look more closely. If it's evenly spread, it's soot. If it's mold, it'll be uneven and splotchy. Soot is usually from gas burner jets not functioning properly, usually in the heater, but could also be the jets need adjustment/cleaning and aren't burning all the gas efficiently. This could also be a gas venting problem, vents clogged or otherwise not working properly. Don't mess around-

Get a carbon monoxide alarm yesterday. Install it yesterday. Have the gas company come out to inspect all appliances which they will do for free. About those candles... be careful and safe, have them in a tray of some kind, not near window coverings, blow out before leaving the house, even if only for a 'few minutes', etc.

Motorcyclist Down

2013-02-12 03:55 PM

Lane-splitting is dangerous and idiotic. With all there is to pay attention to in front of my car, now I have to look out for jerks in my lane also? Blowing by my window, basically causing a momentary fright, is idiotic.

Let's get real - it's not about shaving some time off the ride. It's about making a 'statement' about how superior motorcycle riders are to 'cagers'. It's about owning the road. It's about 'me, myself and I', your only three friends. It's about a bad attitude that leads to injuries and death. It's about selfish narcissism.

The line riders are asking for it also. You know, wheels in their own lane, but everything else, head, shoulders, arm in my lane. Check out the roadside shrines on the road to Ojai- bikers bouncing off vans and cars in their superior attitude rush to the stop light where we meet again..

Cut the nonsense and stay in your own lane period. You'll live longer. Or you can lecture the 'cagers' from your hospital room.

I won't even touch the pathetic parking situation in this town. The irony about the new electronic GPS guided system that they are using is that it will quickly be voided due to the inaccurate nature of the system. GPS is ONLY ACCURATE TO 30 FEET. 30 FEET. This means that they can not be certain that the car was parked in the same spot, the next time they come by, due to this 30 foot accuracy. 30 feet in either direction means that the car could have been moved 60 feet and they would not be able to tell on their lousy system. Once some smarty contests this in court, it will all be thrown out and the system scrapped. Leave it to SB to find another way to rip us all off.

You see they think a little different in Mexicio then we do here. In America the age of consent is 18 and rape is never right. But in Mexico it is twelve and sometimes rape is ok. I would not ever let any of my kids go to mexico (spring break or anything). I would tell everyone I know not to go. There are plenty of other beaches and places to go in the world. Have you ever read how many women (all unsloved) have been raped and killed in Chihuahua. Its sickening. This is an easy one for any jury. It's a crime to:

* Leave the scene of an accident without identifying yourself (Felony Hit and Run Involving Death, Cal. Veh. Code 20001 )
* Conceal/destroy evidence (Destruction of Evidence Cal. Penal Code 135)
* Lie to investigators (Obstructing a Peace Officer, Cal Penal Code 148)

California state law is very specific with regard to leaving the scene of an accident that you have caused.

And as far as the tox screen goes.....it takes 6-8 weeks at least and hopefully the results will be kept as private as possible.

Everyone wants to know why he was walking on the freeway....reality is that one person knew why and he is forever silent.

Santa Barbara Newcomers Playground ...

Thank you for the kind words, Chumash Coyote. It is always a challenge to balance exploring and appreciating the environment against not harming it. We do our best!

Regarding new hikers, everyone is welcome on the Sierra Club hikes. But it is important to know your own ability. Our hikes range from easy to very strenuous. The Playground is not a good hike for a beginner.

I recommend coming on our easier and more traditional trail hikes first. Then you will be more comfortable and prepared for these more challenging hikes.

As for the Newcomers group, this was my only experience with them. These people all had previous hiking experience.

675: Call the cops ask ask. We started noticing them patrolling our hood (Oak Park) more after the recent stuff going on nearby. I assume some people called & they started patrolling. Also, I doubt they are casually strolling down streets after stealing stuff - either they hightail it home, have someone pick them up, or they parked nearby & just go back to their car when they find something.
Totally sucks you lost your hockey gear. Hope the pad stank made them pass out. ;)

Montecito Estates For Sale

Interesting to read all the speculation. My assumption would be that it has been a buyer's market for 4 or 5 years, meaning that folks who can sit it out and wait for a more seller-friendly situation have done so, things are beginning to pick up a bit, local property values have recovered (maybe as much as they are going to for a while, maybe not) it's Spring, and it would seem predictable that homes-on-the-market have increased. Period. Overall taxes in this country are at a post-WWII low after having decreased steadily for 30 yrs. Most people are good citizens and understand the necessity to pay their fair share of making this country a good and continually better place. The me-first trickle-down economic model crashed and burned, and we understand the need to pull together - just can't agree upon how, yet. People of good will, project charitable thoughts. We are all evolving. Grow or die isn't about money, it's about unity and good will.

So do we trust that this US satellite launch was for peaceful purposes but not the recent North Korean satellite launch? Meanwhile we know that the more recent South Korean satellite launch was good just like ours. Come on, this stuff is beyond the ability of ordinary folks to come to independent judgment about. What is true is that the US has the most advanced space weapons program period. Certainly there are more sophisticated military surveillance programs than we are allowed to use in the Landsat program but we don't know what else this same device provides to military. Realism demands we discount 98% of NASA and USAF press releases.

The small hawk in the 4th picture took off shortly after I shot this. He had short, broad wings, and a relatively long banded tail. What I think is called the "terminal band" on the tail is narrow and white. It can be clearly seen which is a characteristic of a Cooper's hawk, but I've read that a Coopers hawk's terminal band is broader. A Sharp Shinned hawk fits the bill, but the terminal band of a Sharp Shinned is not supposed to be so white. No description I can find deals with the big white patch just below the belly. I would think that would be conclusive...

12 Annual Frank Kelly Lecture on Hu...

2013-02-12 11:40 AM

High speed rail and public transit has a multiplier effect environmentally, socially and economically. It creates land use along transit corridors, instead of sprawl.

This leaves more undeveloped land. It also allows people and goods to get where they are going faster and with less resources than with sprawl.

Reducing population indeed is a long term ideal. But it takes decades. The tipping point for climate change can't wait for that.

And even a reduced population will benefit from efficient transportation and land use. The important lesson: There is a difference between a debt and an INVESTMENT.

Topcat, Stachybotrys is toxic black mold. It is NOT harmless. Exposure to the mycotoxins present in Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra can have a wide range of effects. Depending on the length of exposure and volume of spores inhaled or ingested, symptoms can manifest as chronic fatigue or headaches, fever, irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat, sneezing, rashes, and chronic coughing. In severe cases of exposure or cases exacerbated by allergic reaction, symptoms can be extreme including nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs and nose.
OP, I'd get it checked out. I've used a product call "Molderizer" which actually kills the mold and not just bleaching it like bleach does. No, I'm not a rep for Molderizer.

The fact that the driver "ran" was not the cause of death. It was the hit. The hit was likely totally unavoidable. Stopping would not have saved the life of this young man - not when he was hit by a car going at least 60 mph.

Yes, it was bad and irresponsible (and illegal) that the driver did not stop. BUT, it would have done nothing to bring back this young man to life.

It's is all very tragic but it seems people are very eager to blame the driver for the death.

East Coast Winter

2013-02-12 10:57 AM

You can see snow like this in California, too, most winters. Up in the Sierras. I used to live in the central valley and drive up there on weekends to play. They even have snow parks just for sledding and sliding! Snow 6 to 8 feet deep! It was really nice to be able to visit the snow, and then drive two hours home to a milder climate. Really good snow like that is a bit harder to access from here.

I lived in Philadelphia for a few years, where I found the low rents entirely offset by higher costs for energy and food. And the property taxes back east--pretty much anywhere that doesn't have Prop 13--are astronomical, for way worse public services than we get here.

Oh, and I just found an old edhat thread with referrals (search Mold Remediation). Not a bad idea to get it tested just in case. But regular cleaning (yay bleach!) is a must.

432: Assumptive much? I do that in my bathroom (leave fan on for a while after & have the window wide open) & we still have mold. OP never said s/he rented (or that s/he is a she) and I'm pretty sure you couldn't sue your landlord by going behind their back & testing for mold WITHOUT TELLING THEM. (Well, you could. You just won't win.)

The trail to the Playground is about 1.5 miles before the Lizard's Mouth area. It is about a 20 minute walk from there to the Playground.

It is not hard to find the Playground. What is hard is to navigate the rocky labyrinths. I call the Playground "Lizard's Mouth on Steroids". Or Lizard's Mouth I call "The Playground with Training Wheels".

I would recommend you look at the Sierra Club hike listings and come the next time I lead it for them. The next time will be in about three months.

Elected Officials Thank Volunteers

2013-02-12 10:04 AM

Yes, 508, there are some old white people who have progressive ideas and have the time to volunteer. I would think Republicans also have volunteers who are old white people. Younger people are working and don't have as much time to volunteer as retired people. But the important thing is that we had a standing room only crowd of happy people who won the elections from the President down. I guess that explains the bitter comments from those who didn't win. Without the work of our Campus Dems in this county and across the country we could not have won, so don't think there are not a lot of young people and people of color who worked hard for the Democratic victories. We're sticking together for fair responsible government, social justice, and civil and reproductive rights.

Shrinking? Yes, but books won't ever die. Just like TV never killed radio, the eBook will not kill the print book. I love my iPad, but hate reading books on it so I still get them in print. However I do like magazines in e-form.

If the library directors were smart they would take advantage of our 1 store town, revamp their model and open a coffee shop in side the library (with a separate quiet area) and parlay the market in a library renaissance.

I welcome a new bookstore and wish them success.

Right now, the obvious positive goal to build? Sustainable energy and transportation projects on a vast scale. Putting the tens of millions of un- and under-employed to work building this transformation.

He walked down a driveway & behind a house to get to my stuff. Other people on the same block had their cars gone through. Oak Tree Disease

2013-02-12 09:10 AM

During the dry season, it is all right, my arborist said, to water deeply once a month, especially if the winter has not been produced enough rain to wet the tree's deeper roots thoroughly. Never watering is O.K. for non-stressed trees or younger trees, but old city-stressed trees need some water even during the summer. I notice that some of the "dead" parts on our trees have put out new leaves in the last two months after this rainy winter. An arborist can look at the bark and around the base of the tree, maybe will suggest more mulch. We were told to keep the oak's own fallen leaves where they fall, for mulch and for fertilizer.

Glad you are okay. I agree with the "pay it forward" comment. Perhaps sharing your story with young, impressionable skateboarders who believe they are invincible and immune to injury would be an avenue to explore. Do be careful and talk to your doctor about the potential effects of repetitive brain injury. Not to seem dramatic, but a second injury, even if less traumatic than the first, carries the potential of severe injury or death. You are here for a reason, so be kind to yourself. These sales have been going on through out the recession and continue to go on as the economy improves. Is there some statistical data to support that the "big estates" are being sold in larger quantities at this time? Haven't seen it.

Agree that the uber-wealthy aren't going to worry too much about the tax increases. Their wealth is capital gains, not wages; mostly untouched by regular folks' tax increases.

There is a generational shift to warmer climes (yes SB is cooler compared to Florida, Arizona and Hawaii) and more conservative politics, but it not an overwhelming driver.

Sometimes as the wealthy age, just like the rest of us, they simplify, get rid of a few of the second and third homes, maybe from divorce, death of a partner, kids in other parts of the country they want to live near, even a job change or corporate shakeup (ie SB Bank and Trust). Not too different than the majority middle class.

Growing up here no one ever did that. Now people call 911 if they see a child walking to a friend's house. This sounds absurd and extreme but it happens in SB all of the time!

Hazardous Materials Leak

2013-02-12 08:32 AM

My wife and I had just arrived to pick up some supplies. As we headed down the main aisle past the cameras, you could hear a very loud hissing sound coming from the rear of the store. As we made our way toward the rear, we could see what looked like steam rising from the refrigeration units that houses the vegetables. All of the Costco shoppers were calmly headed toward the front of the store. Several Costco employees headed against the tide toward the rear of the store. As we headed toward the front, I noticed the entry door was closed and staff were shepherding people slowly out the exit door. While some staff did well to remove shoppers from the rear store area, there seemed to be a lack of a clear coordinated and timely evacuation. People were still checking out as if nothing were wrong. Also, the fact that the front door was closed to prevent shoppers from entering set up an evacuation hazard. Did the Costco employees do a good job? Yes. Could it have been better and more timely? Absolutely.

Your brain is especially vulnerable for the next 3-4 months, but truthfully, the next time you fall, unless you're wearing a helmet that is 5x the size of your head, and filled with high tech shock absorbent material, your brain will get rocked again and instead of those scary feelings wearing off, you could be stuck in a version of that nightmare for good.

Soot is a fine dry powder like material. Black mold is generally in the local water supply and only grows where there is as source of some moisture. It does not have the fine, dry and powdery consistancy of soot. Many recent fires produced a fine ash dust that the wind carried for many miles. Some may remember after the Zaca fire, huge clouds of fine ash were blown over the mountains from the valley causing semi-darkness in some areas. That very fine airborn ash worked it's way into everything including window and glass door runners. That kind of gritty abrasive ash is very damaging to many things, particularly mechanical devices and also one's lungs! I had to change my air filter on my car and probably should have worn a face mask.

Good Samaritan

2013-02-12 07:58 AM

I am thrilled to hear of your angel in a time of great need.

But I also must point out that the best thing to do for an injury like this is to call 911 immediately and report that there is a head trauma injury and that the injured party is not fully responsive. The extra five to ten minutes spent driving to the girlfriend's place, getting into the girfriends car, going to urgent care that could do little to treat a brain trauma, and finally going to the ER as opposed to a direct trip to ER in an ambulance staffed by medics who could do the initial diagnosis on the road could have meant the difference between a full recovery and permanent paralysis.

Never screw around or be indecisive with potential brain trauma. If the victim cannot immediately describe lucidly and in detail why their brain is fine, don't wait another few seconds - call 911.

2013-02-12 07:51 AM

Question is: How much is 'bulk' to you and what price do you expect to pay? 30 cents? 25 cents? Talk to local retailers (ie not chains like CVS) to get a good price. Try The Travel Store on Anapamu, they offer help (and sell goodies like postcards) to people visiting town....

Unfortunately the parents or other family members are the responsible adults who need to get them involved in the many sports programs, clubs, "Big Brother" program, Boys & Girls club, scouting, music and many other good programs for youth available in the community. Also, some of the schools have programs, e.g. after schools programs, that the parents or teachers could encourage these youths to get involved in.

Weasel

2013-02-12 07:46 AM

Re: whoever said "civet" - civets do not live here. They are found in Asia and Africa. Yes, weasels are common here. You need much more information on how things looked in order to get any useful information on what happened. This is just kind of stabbing in the dark. Were the bodies up against the wire with feathers pulled through? If so, think raccoon. Anyway, provide more information than "chickens killed".

Oak Tree Disease

2013-02-12 07:32 AM

What is oak tree disease? Not in any literature, nor known to arborists. Kinda like saying "human body disease", ummm cold, flu, cancer, indigestion, bad hair day?

If there oak moths present, a preventative spray of Bt will keep the resultant caterpillagers at bay.

519, you are so correct. Brandon school area too in Goleta the past 15 months. My video system caught the guy the second time he visited, but my car was locked and it only recorded him walking away from my car door at 3:30 am, his favorite shopping time. He lives on Hillview with girlfriend and little white dog. the first video was two people, views on video from the waist down only, assume the second person was his girlfriend. Not enough evidence to prosecute the police said.

On a dog happy note, one home burglary victim about a year ago, came home to find lots of blood in his house and a happy German Sheppard who surprised the world-be burglar.

Possible Jumper

2013-02-12 07:17 AM

My 59 year old brother in law killed himself in August after talking about doing it for a few weeks beforehand. Nobody took hom seriously because he was drunk whenever he said it, and seemed to be wallowing in his misery... He made several ( what looked to us) half-hearted attempts, like jumping off a ground- floor window ledge. We loved him dearly and felt he was desperate for attention, which we gave him, willingly. But his suicide took us by surprise - astonishingly, in spite if all of the above, not one of us believed he would really do it. It is VERY difficult to help someone who has mental issues and refuses to be helped. The law protects us all; we cannot be locked up "for our own good" without very good reason and following of certain procedures... It is even more difficult to live with the pain, the loss, the guilt, the remorse and the hindsight when they kill themselves. If you are dealing with something like this please talk to someone about getting help.

Every year she takes a few kids with " way too much time on their hands" and puts them to work with her building sets, painting, making things, helping some of the young oerforners. She is no nonsense with a huge heart- it's something to do with Peabody school but she is there on weekends. I saw rhose kids flourish with her and enjoy themselves.

Boy Scouts is a terrific program for boys ages 11-17. I've been one and been an active parent of several. Scouting relationships have at times been a lifeline for them. Boys ARE at higher risk right now in our culture. In Scouts, kids get to learn skills they themselves respect and work on character and leadership. And they spend a lot of time outdoors. It works especially well when parents are involved.

I'm trying to figure out how a non-related adult would "know" five 12-year olds well enough to determine that they're "lost".

The only plausible thought that comes to mind is the person is a teacher, but if that were so, the person would already know the answer to the question they are posing.

Reaching out to 5 separate boys with the expectation of them all changing is going to next to impossible. Although, I feel they are just about at the age where maybe they can still turn around before becoming idiots as teens.

Not sure the situation here, but the parents need to get them interested in something. As the previous poster sarcastically stated, there are plenty of things around here that don't require a mentoring group. Hiking, biking, surfing, swimming, whatever. Why not simply ask the kids what they want to do? Summer is coming up in a few months, and with nice weather approaching, that's the perfect opportunity for them to get sucked into a good hobby.

The posts by the potential owner are pretty weird, yes! I say get an arborist out there or call the city to find out if they can send someone to check it out if it is out near the street because if it is a sick or dying tree those things can fall and hurt people. If not, then the owner should consult with an arborist and help the tree get back into optimum health!

Oak Tree Disease

2013-02-12 06:29 AM

I don't think it's disease but rather twig girdler activity, where an insect encircles the twig, cutting off the flow of sap so the branchlet dies beyond that point. A lot of local oaks had a bad case of this a few years ago but they all recovered. Treatment would be to cut off the dead twigs to improve the appearance of the tree, but it's not really necessary. Oaks have been surviving these outbreaks for ages.

R-22 Freon leak isn’t that big of a deal, as long as people don’t panic. It would take a huge leak and supply volume to cause medical issues. However, if this were ammonia refrigerant (used at some stores for refrigerator cases) then results could’ve been very serious, or even deadly.

Fine Black Soot

2013-02-12 02:59 AM

It's harmless mold. Your window areas need to be wiped down, cleaned more than you think. In the winter, there's a lot of condensation in the window area from keeping the windows closed, the heater "on" and our "breathing. Together with dust (EVERYONE has it), it makes for the black mold. Also "air out" closets - shoes especially carry mold - you'd be surprised.

IT IS HARMLESS - so don't start trying to see if you can sue your landlord.....this is YOUR responsibility to keep things clean.

Hey, and thanks for reminding me!

Always good to have alerts like this one. My boyfriend is a real idjit about leaving his high-end bikes outside. One of these days . . .

Years ago, another one of my boyfriends had installed a REALLY nice stereo in my ratty car. He was working on my car, blasting the stereo. I went up to him and asked why he was advertising this nice addition to my car. That Blaupunkt had been in my car for about a year.

Sure enough, some attentive thief made off with my lovely car stereo----two nights later!
