I don't get it. I was reading about some hikers stranded and found and transported by amr and quite frankly expected the usual gripes about rescuing hikers and got posts a plenty about Roger and how he posts the posts. What's up with that? Roger provides excellent coverage and information about many things we would never hear about if we only got our news from KEYT & the SBNP.

These rhymes are a bit forced, and tis a sad tale.

A friend who came from Santa Barbara,
Did puff every day on a Marlboro
His lungs, you can guess
Were soon a big mess.
And now I must serve as his pall-bearer.

Privilege

2013-02-10 09:18 PM

Just because someone has grown up privileged does not guarantee a worry free Disneyland existence. I grew up in this same neighborhood Kelsey speaks of. Only it was many years earlier and much more idealistic. I was a spoiled kid with no concept of what was truly important in life. Then my parents divorced, my mother suffered a nervous breakdown, we lost everything in the paint fire and shortly after my mother died of cancer. At 18 I had to flee for my life by myself ,home alone with 5 minutes to leave.I saw my neighbors houses explode and horses burn to death. At 20 I watched my mother begin a horrible battle with breast cancer. At 22 I put my life on hold and moved home to care for her while she was dying.

No amount of money can prepare or protect you from trauma, illness, death and life in general. I had already experienced a great deal of life when others my age were just beginning theirs.

These battle scars have made me who I am today not the wealth or neighborhood I grew up in.

Weasel

2013-02-10 08:41 PM

What makes you think weasel? (sorry about your chicks)

How did it get in?

We have had raccoon and opossum kill chickens in the past. A couple of things to do:

Use hardward cloth (1/2" squares) on your run and coop (chicken wire is used to keep chickens in not varmints out)

Use an apron of hardware cloth 18-24" out from the bottom of the run/coop (bury it a little or cover with pavers) to discourage digging.

And use locking clips to close doors on the coop (raccoon can figure out some latches)

Weasel

Were the chickens all decapitated? If so, it is the work of raccoons. Weasels certainly can kill chickens, but probably wouldn't kill them all, and much would be eaten of the one it would have killed.

The Old KTYD Crew

2013-02-10 08:16 PM

I remember listening to KTYD every morning on the way to school. It was so good! Matt was the greatest and Hayseed always cracked me up. Probably the most memorable show for me was when the final Harry Potter book was about to come out. They called random bookstores around the country trying to see if they could get someone to read the last sentence of the book outloud. They were talking with one woman for a while, but she kept saying she wasn't allowed to read anything from it. So, Hayseed asked her if she could at least tell them what the last word of the book was. He asked if the last word was "dead". Too good. Thanks for the memories!

They gave SB a sense of community that's been replaced by a void. Their humor lightened up the community and gave us a positive, human perspective on local issues as well as public oversight on controversial issues - they commented on and invited callers to comment on issues the local censored media won't touch. A great DJ who was homeless when hired
let us see homeless PEOPLE, instead of objects to count. A big piece of SB's heart was cut out when they left.
Proctor & Ward were awesome too - their Fiesta Parade coverage from the sidewalk in front of the Granada was one of SB's most outstanding annual events.

933, of course driving is a right. As citizens in a free country we have the right to do pretty much whatever we want, as long as we don't break the law.

I hear so many people say driving is a "privilege," as if someone could take away your right to drive on a whim. They can't -- you need to be convicted of a crime in order to lose your right to drive.

Consider this. In some states felons can't vote. Does that make voting a "privilege" instead of a "right?"

Goleta Valley definately!!! The nurses, administration, etc., does not operate like the big organization of Cottage. They are caring, compasionate, and do an outstanding job. I was there recently, and the woman in the bed next to me came all the way from Santa Maria - even though they have the brand new Marion Medical Center. That should say something. Too bad, Cottage downtown, is stripping all specialized procedures to their facility. I recommend Goleta at #1 in Santa Barbara/Goleta. St. Francis was great too - but long gone now. Glad someone is looking into the monopoly.

I saw Steve and Garry at the Park West, along with Seka. I was listening to their show (WLS) when I heard a caller talk about his idiot neighbor and what an ugly, smelly, bad-tempered, gap-toothed so and so she was. Garry told the caller to give him her phone number off air. About three minutes later, I got a phone call from Steve and Garry while they were on the air. This did not improve the situation with me and the neighbor.

Another great entertainer as well as radio personality was Jonathan Brandmeier. I saw Johnny and The Leisure Suits I think at Poplar Creek.

Hey guys...Matt here in Santa Barbara this weekend hanging with my family. Kudos to White Trash Tom (owner of Absolut Cab) for tipping me off to this conversation. I can't tell you how flattering it is to be remembered for the radio we did at KTYD which came to an end 5 years ago. Even though I'm in Phoenix now doing essentially the same thing, I can't lie and tell you that it's even close to being as much fun we had doing The Early Show for 10 good years. I have come to realize that no matter what I do from this point on in my career, it will always be the highlight. Jenna is writing a ton of books and doing great, Taylor is doing stand-up somewhere, Hayseed still lives here and continues to coach, and Producer Joe works with me and probably will be for as long as I'm in radio. Thanks again for making my day with your nice feedback, it was such a pleasant surprise to see. -Matt PS. Hey Roger...your comments are welcome too. In China.

I played in their Xmas band one year and I learned about CASA from a mike-on marathon. Did good for the community in a true radio host sort of way. I will always stay true to KTYD as long as they have their current music format but the current morning show is just so lacking in comparison. I understand budget has a huge role to play, but it's still unfortunate and I will still mourn the loss.

Victorian Cribs of the Upper East ...

2013-02-10 03:16 PM

The home at 15 East Valerio St. was owned by my Grandfather Corrill S. Partch until his death in 1961. He lived there with his second wife Mary Levisa Lillard Sawyers. My Father, Willard S. Partch Sr. built the 2-story duplex thats behind the original home. I lived in the original home as a boy and then again in 1958 with my new bride Barbara Panier Partch. We often drive by when in town from Santa Ynez. Love the old homes which we don't have in the valley. Thanks for posting.

Yep..miss the team. They had great gags, fun bits. Also had awesome community spirit!! Remember 9/11 and the human-built American flag they helped set up at SBCC? My family and I were among the thousands of proud participants that day; still have the framed picture on my wall. How about the Dodgeball tournament? My "Arms of Thunder" team made it to the final 8 and lost, but had one hell of a good time. Remember Matt's T-shirt world record? The list is long; no matter what you may think of the stuff they did it was anything but boring

Yes, miss the team. Haven't listened to the station much since; like I said, kinda boring. Know Matt went to Phoenix, Julie returned to Riverside (?not sure of city) to go to nursing school. Anybody know what happened to Hayseed? I liked the way he worked his tail off until finally getting a paying job at the station

Cox is your carrier, they only care that you pay your monthly bill. The networks and affiliates provide listing information to get you to tune in so their ratings are high and they can sell advertising. TV schedules are very susceptible to changes and sometimes programming changes faster than the listing service can update. This is not laziness, they do want to provide accurate information and have you tune in.

Don't expect a city bureaucrat to get off his/her butt to help you, unless there is a fine they can collect to add to city coffers. The idea of relocating the feces to the violators doorstep is the best and most effective solution. Lighting it on fire would be arson, so don't do that. Just make sure it sits in the sunlight for a while. Also, try to locate it where the offender won't see it, but will certainly step on it. It would be a bonus if they stepped on it before they got into their high-end SUV or their Prius.

I was Listener #102. I called in to tell Matt that I could taste the difference between the M&M colors and they brought me in to do it live on the air. They sent me home with $150 worth of gift certificates. They were great. I really miss the morning belly laughs going to work. They had such great bits and I think really did a lot to unify this community, bring people together. Even if it was to compete in the Battle of the Burbs or hold frozen turkeys or bring us closer to the odd little stories and people being amazing 3000 miles away or remind us why we don't live in Florida. Taylor Morgan was great, as was Jenna McCarthy, followed by Julie. Matt was behind the 9,000+ people that showed up to La Playa stadium to form a human American flag, in the weeks following 9/11. I still have the photo.

@869P. Please read my post of a few minutes ago. You must get a neighbor to call in to Animal Control. You call in, too. Animal Control has to take this situation seriously, once two neighbors are calling it in.

You should never have to put up with a howling dog. I am sorry you waited and suffered so long. Call it in.

The dog is lonely. The owners need to take measures to ensure his well-being. Poor dogs, left alone for hours and hours. They are pack animals. Do it for the dog and for yourself. Call it in.

Just to clarify: Animal Control considers that two complaints filed (from two different parties) constitutes "a neighborhood." In other words, any time you want Animal Control to take your complaint seriously, whether it's about dog poop or dogs barking, you must first enlist the help of a nearby neighbor. Then: both of you call it in. Repeatedly, if necessary.

It worked for us, with barking dogs. PLEASE do not confront further these non-picker-upper and butt-littering asocial people, since you have already once mentioned their bad behavior to them. They don't sound like mentally stable people. Do Not engage further, but allow the authorities to handle it. Best of luck.

I gave Matt a lot of "bits" that he used. I really liked the "knucklehead" bit, where Matt would randomly call a business, usually outside California, and would ask to speak with the Knucklehead. Funniest response : Which one do you wanna talk to?

Every business has a knuckle-head or two!!!

I like Taylor Morgan as Matt's sidekick. She had a lot of funny stuff. Like, when she first started there, she was in the parking lot behind Long's drugstore and when she tried getting the attention of a driver that was leaving, the woman driver flipped Taylor off. Taylor was just trying to let the driver know that her purse was on the hood of her car. Well, the drivers purse slid off her car onto the ground and Taylor picked it up and took it back to the radio station. They started going thru the purse, while on-air, and let everyone know that there was a vibrator in there. That's when the purse owner called and threatened to sue them!!! Anyone else remember that story??? That was back in the late 1980's

Plus, I am really leery of the "organic" labeling at our local Farmer's marts. People should always ask. Many times the answer is: "We don't spray." Yes. But what goes into the soil?

Just to illustrate: I discovered I can eat only organically grown strawberries. If the berries "aren't sprayed" but have nasty soil amendments added------I eat one of these fruits and break out in hives! And I am not allergic to anything else, so far as I know. Caveat emptor.

Consider hiring a landscape architect. There are some good landscapers around, but hiring one to design a garden, is a bit like building a house without an architect. If you can make it work, consider having the plan done professionally and then save money by doing the installation with some lower priced labor.

Phil Suding of Suding Design (landscape architect, listed in the SB phone book) did a great job planing the Xeriscape design on our acre lot. He's not an installer, but certainly knows the plants, resources for getting the plants, and low-water irrigation systems and has a great eye for color and design.

I was taught by SB police that the majority of people do NOT know the difference between shots fired and any number of similar sounds so it's best to err on the SAFE side and CALL 911. Even if it's "only fireworks", someone is still breaking the law and endangering people. The OP is someone who knows the sound of gunshots with such confidence s/he is identifying the caliber but chooses NOT to call due to his/her own agenda. I'm glad I don't have you for a neighbor because that seems pretty selfish to me. If you know gunshots were fired but you have no intention of contributing your knowledge to the safety of your community, why are you posting here? PooPoo Neighbor

@dirtyharry - I would NOT recommend withholding rent and I don't think the poop is justifiable for with holding rent.

Yes, it will take 2 complaint calls for the same infraction, and multiple calls within a certain timeframe, before Animal Control takes it to the next level. (calls from 2 different people for the same complaint). But, with one complaint call, Animal Control tries to make contact with the owners and will leave a notice that a complaint has been filed.

As for rats eating poop ~ I used to have a secondary cat box outside and witnessed rats inside the cat box. And, I noticed that the cat box rarely had cat poop in there, at the same time seeing rats around. And, that's not a cat box that was cleaned on a regular basis, but was used by my cats and visiting cats all the time and would normally have lots of poop in there.

Dryer Vent Clean Out

2013-02-10 11:33 AM

Twice now in the last couple of years, I've had a mouse climb in the flappy vent cover and build himself a home in the dryer housing somewhere. They chewed through the vent screen and got into the dryer drum, helping themselves to bits of clean t-shirts!. This time I brushed and cleaned everything out , then built a wire cage to fit into the exit vent at the outside wall, using two downspout leaf guards (expanded aluminum mesh) from the hardware store. I fashioned a wire pull handle so I can pull it out and clean it as necessary. No more mousies!

Dryer Vent Clean Out

2013-02-10 11:26 AM

I'm an older 'girl'; I use my "Webster" (long pole with a round brush on the end for cleaning spider webs) but I have to say, sometimes it's not so easy to move a dryer. I hurt my back last week doing just this. It was stuck between the proverbial Rock and Hard Spot so it took some muscle, and much jimmying back and forth.

Then to squeeze behind the dryer to unhook the vent hose, and vac out the vent coming out of the dryer. I used the webster from the outside, as it's a straight shot inwards to the elbow. I used my leaf blower to blow out the last dust from the inside. I had to replace the flexi-elbow connection as it was starting to get pinholes in it. I got it at Ace, and reconnected it myself, but next time, I'm having my handyman do it. If you have a kindly neighbor, maybe they can do the hard parts for you. There's always a way to 'pay' back favors like this. (I bake a lot)

Tick Bite Advice

2013-02-10 11:17 AM

Lyme desease is not the only desease carried by ticks. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is also carried by ticks and is present in the western U.S. Having had dogs and camping out when younger in local mountains I too have had tick "bites" (probably not the best way to describe the boring and leaching activity of ticks) Removal is an art and I found gently pulling combined with 2 to 3 complete counterclockwise turns works best. (the ticks bore into skin clockwise) Areas to more closely check for ticks are areas where the clothing is tighter because the ticks use their legs pushing against clothing for leverage to bore into skin. On animals it is their fur.

Xeriscaping Landscaper

2013-02-10 11:09 AM

You can find similar results by searching for 'Mediteranean landscape style'. 'Xeriscape' was a popular term in the late 80's and 90's when low water-use landscaping was a novelty. Not used all that much any more.

'Sustainable' is also a commonly-used term nowadays, synonymous with Xeriscaping and Mediterranean. All feature low water-use plantings, site soils and grading assessment, integral use of water-permeable hardscaping surfaces, catchment basins where feasible, low or no fertizliers and other garden chemicals, and (perhaps most important) planting plans with spacings which don't require endless pruning.

Be sure to indicate to the designer the amount of engagement you'll wish to have with your landscape's maintenance.

Zinfandel - A California Favorite

2013-02-10 11:05 AM

Interesting discussion as always but I can't resist objecting to the claim that zinfandel is California's original wine grape. Was this a misstatement or misrecollection? Mission grapes pretty universally regarded as the first wine grape in California and are still grown in some areas. They came in with the Spanish missionaries in the early 1700's or thereabouts. Zinfandel arrived by most history in the late1800's.

It is unfortunate that your neighbors persist in such in-your-face uncivil behavior. Reading through some of the comments it strikes me that it is not wise to escalate the apparent feud: There are a lot of unstable, stressed-out people out there, and instead of changing their behavior you could focus their negativity on you. The stalking and public-shaming suggestions seem particularly fraught with risk. Speaking first to the property manager, and then providing documentation to civil authorities seems the wisest course. Good luck.

Read and re-read your lease/rental agreement, looking for the appropriate section re: dog poop on common area. Contact landlord in writing with evidence attached. Be polite and firm. Do not withhold rent (yet) until the landlord has a chance to respond. Send your letter certified, copies to Animal Control and owners (if different from management company).

Repeat once. Not recommended: starting a fire on the offenders porch, leaving a pumpkin with a knife in it, leaving dog poop on offenders porch, talking to offender about it more than once, making threats, talking smack on facebook or on the internet. Just handle it like an adult. This means no passive-aggressive behavior, snark, smirk or smart-aleck type responses. If need be take some Growacet.

I believe the Police can site the offenders for "Littering" which has a hefty fine. Also, due to recent changes in the law, the owner of a property has some responsibility for their tenants, meaning they can be sued. This works well when you have an individual property owner, but dealing with any management company is always trying. If you do not get satisfaction from the management company, write a letter to the owner of the property and complain about the management company. If that's too difficult, a petition of the neighbors taken to the management company may do the trick. Check with the California Department of Consumer Affairs http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/landlordbook/index.shtml

How about buying a package of "poop" bags at the pet store and tying it to their front doorknob? You can get them in all kinds of "scents" and colors maybe this will make the task more appealing. I have dogs and always pick up their poop if I see someone who is not picking up their dog poop I go over and offer them a bag and they usually pick up after their dog. Next time you see the act offer him/her a bag see how they react. Good Luck

The SB City ordinance says the poop must be scooped immediately.

SB Animal control WILL do something and give them a sanitation citation, You have to meet the burden of proof...have to have seen the poop leave the dog's butt. You must be absolutely sure.

I had a jerk of a neighbor whose family didn't scoop up after a Lab. They were formally warned by Animal Control that they will be cited next offence. An SBPD "CAD Call" document exists in the police files as permanent documentation. They didn't cite him then because it was his teenage sons walking the dog (minors).

He moved away, ut had there been another offience reported he would have been cited.

The best advice I've heard here is to withhold rent. Be sure to include an explanation in writing to both the management company and your lawyer. Be sure you cite any city regulations the apply as well as any bi-laws in your rental agreement that outline responsibilities of your rental management company. If you can get photos of the tenants with their dogs in the act this will support your case but photos of just the dogs doing their business should be enough since the owners of the dogs are responsible for their behavior. Place the funds you are withholding into a trust or have your lawyer hold the checks. Get the losers out of your complex as fast as you can they are probably into meth or something worse.

The Board of directors has out-of-county members because many of the farm stands are from agribusiness operations not located in our county. They hire people to run their stands. The orginal idea was to have local farmers sell to local people, you could talk to them about their farms and products. I know two local couples with small organic farms who can't get into the market; one is allowed in but not on a permnent basis, the other they won't allow to sell at all. Like the rest of our country, corporations rule! And don't think for a minute they sell organic fruit and vegetables. Great pictures, David.

This is the same argument I use for the gun control debate. You lock your front door to reduce the chances of a break in. If someone wants to break in, they can do it but you've made it less likely. Same with flu shots. You make your odds better by getting the shot. (And you reduce the potential risks if you make it harder to get a gun and ammunition.)

I have been curious, though, about the fact that most members of their board don't live in Santa Barbara County. I find that odd and wonder how that decision came about because one would think the Farmers would want to be represented by people living in the same county as the growers. PooPoo Neighbor

@YPYETR - last time I checked, the minimum number of complains was only 2 for animal control to respond.
So get your neighbors together and get them to actually call animal control if you want something done.

The reason nothing happened is because you complained to the police: they do not care about dog barking calls and dispatch will never relay them to the cops. Only animal control will do something, and only if they get multiple calls on the address.

Animal control will respond if more than one person contacts them in a rational and non over emotional way ( so they don't think it is just a personal vendetta )

Also, recording the noise with video of the house/address and posting on Youtube can also sometimes work - send the Youtube link to the owner of the dog and all neighbors with in 3 blocks (whom can hear the dog). This can shame the person into taking care of it, and really does work in some cases. Make a new account just for the dog barking rather than use your own personal youtube account.

Also, look up the address on the following website. There you can find the owner's name and if it is a rental, contact them and let them know. (If the dog is violating the lease, your problem will be solved quick)
sb-real-estate.findthedata.org

Let us know how it goes, YPYETR.

Hi Roger,
I record the scanner 24/7 on my computer - if you can tell me the time you heard the shots I will listen 30 minutes before&after and tell you if I hear anything interesting.

@741: check your facts! Animal control is not the police. The police have a truck, but the police will not respond to a dog call! They tell you to call Animal Control during normal business hours. My neighbors and I complained to the police for almost two years about my next door neighbor that let his dog bark ALL. NIGHT and would turn him lose every morning to do his business on everyone else's yard. The police NEVER CAME! Not even for a disturbing the peace call in the middle of the night. And according to the law, there have to be a certain number of complaints, and from a variety of neighbors, before animal control can no longer ignore your complaints.

RE 762. The vaccine is is created way ahead of time based on the estimated strains predicated. This year is it is estimated to be 60% effective. Better than nothing. A few years ago my colleague died within 72 hours from the H1N1. 30 year old healthy women. Not a pretty sight if you are a shut in you are probabely ok. If you have to get out in the word and travel a lot tin may lead you ro have a have a different perspective. Vaccines are not evil, ignorance is .

Tick Bite Advice

ehow has this nice little recipe for natural repellent. Ticks apparently dislike rose geranium oil and lavender oil. Make yourself some repellent and then use it. Be sure and check for ticks anyway, after your hikes. But this repellent should keep you tick-free.

Flu shots are useless, honestly. There are so many different strains of flu virus. Those shots are a big money maker for someone, and afford little protection.

PooPoo Neighbor

Animal Control will respond to this, for the dog poop part. I am not surprised the management company is m.i.a. on this one. Get this on video, send to owner of complex.

We had a bad problem in our Upper East chi-chi neighborhood, with students having loud parties. The management company was useless. As soon as we contacted the owner, though, the students had to head on down the road.

As a dog owner, I am disgusted with your creepy neighbors. Good luck with all of this.
