My doctor is at Sansum and I never wait and she spends plenty of time talking with me. You need a new doctor. I recommend one of the doctor rating sites, where patients rate wait time, bedside manner, etc. and they also include info like whether the physician is board certified. Here are some links: www.vitals.com, www.healthgrades.com, and www.ratemds.com. Good luck.

We will never have a Santa Barbaran as Miss America if we don't start at the ground level. Chamber of Commerce? Downtown Organization? City Recreation Department? Care to renew an old tradition?

Killer Cacti

2013-02-07 08:10 PM

The previous owners may not have had any "presents" but we have asked our new neighbors and there have been several cases over the years of dogs injured and cats impaled. My wife's parents live nearby and have had to save impaled cats there themselves.
These are not cactus from the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner cartoons, these are serious desert plants evolved to live in the worst conditions imaginable and fend off 40ft dinosaurs with skin 2 inches thick.
I believe these plants are programmed to survive in extreme environments. They have beautifully adapted to endure attacks by weather, sun and hostile predators. Their battle armor is too dangerous for relatively thin skinned people.
We are a no kill family. We save and release spiders, lizards, birds, mice, rats and voles that accidentally enter our house. It's been difficult discussing these plants that appear healthy and happy. We have to think of our daughter first. Where she is concerned we won't risk an easily avoidable injury. The Sago doesn't just make dogs and kids sick. In about 70 percent of cases, it kills. Liver failure is very common. So.....just sayin :)

Public attacks between those who know each other can be horrific. Peaches and I see this sort of thing all the time and it is usually alcohol related, sometimes made worse because it is fueled by meth. One time we saw a native Dihai-kutchin bashing an Aleut over the tanix with a shovel for stealing a beer. We called the cops and they finally came after 10 minutes. Unfortunately, by that time the Aleut was laid out unconscious in a bloody pile ready to be transported to the hospital with multiple cuts on or about the face and head area. There was nothing we could do to stop it - one guy tried too, but the drunk madman with the shovel took huge swipes at him.

One way to tell, is if the leaves are opposite or not. In the diagram at that link - the opposite twigs can be clearly seen for Chaparral Ceanothus.

Bigpod Ceanothus has alternate leaves, and grows mostly along the south-facing slopes of the Santa Ynez mountains.

2013-02-07 04:51 PM

Part of the problem is, that it is difficult to determine who should be tested and how often. You can make an argument that virtually every job has some element of mental clarity, dexterity and judgment that could be dangerous if impaired under some set of circumstances. Would you want your pharmacist filling your prescription to be a drug user? What about cab and bus drivers or anyone operating a vehicle or piece of equipment? Doctors, nurses, X-ray technicians, anesthesiologists, dentists, airplane builders and mechanics not to mention the pilots or anyone in the construction trades involved in building something that could fail? That ubiquitous circumstance results in the liklihood of requiring everyone to be drug tested constantly with no indication of a particular problem suggesting there is a need to do so other than some possible abstract danger that could be conjured up.

772: Marshall was NOT sick, NOT bipolar, had NO mental illness, and was NOT violent. He was a devoted father. He was an airline captain for 20 years with major carriers, a brilliant airman. His fellow copilots have praised him as the best man to have in the other seat, with the training, calmness and discipline required in a crisis.

He flew seven types of Boeings. His last job was consulting for airlines, screening pilots for inappropriate behavior (drinking etc), highly responsible work. His friends, neighbors and colleagues have said this DOES NOT FIT his character.

However, he had worked alongside unsavory characters (Col. North etc), and he had the cojones to question 9/11. Many others who have researched 9/11 have also met violent/suspicious deaths, or lost their careers.

Please lets keep the 5th grade "conspiracy theorist" accusations away from the discussion and keep it rational and mature, if possible. Thanks.

988p, I was being sarcastic when I said "a bit." I guess that doesn't come across in typed words.

Sadly I don't think a lot will happen to the cops who shot these two innocent ladies. Luckily they will both live (though one was shot in the back so hopefully she doesn't have any lasting spinal or muscle issues from that!) They'll pull the whole, "We were protecting the public/our own from a serious threat" card and likely get away with it.

These ladies were just out delivering papers this morning, minding their own business and from what I saw on one report, the truck was fired upon before it was ordered to stop. Truly scary conduct.

982, it's customary in this country to be innocent until proven guilty. Sometimes people really ARE wrongly accused (probably not the case in this story, but you have to follow the letter of the law for everyone.) Admin leave is totally normal until the person has a trial or is convicted. At this point, she's only been arrested for a crime.

Easy Street Driving School

Easy Street Driving School was just right for our family. Mel was really easy going and made our son feel very comfortable behind the wheel...which made me as a mom, feel comfortable too! With over 15 years of experience with teens, I could tell he knew how to relate to teenagers. Their rates were the lowest I could find anywhere in town and with our busy schedule it was easy to make it work with their flexibility. We know that our son is a much better driver because of him. I totally recommend Easy Street Driving School to every family ready to start their new adventure with a new teen driver. It was a great experience for all of us.

Wow, if ever there was an example of misinformation it is here!. Sansum and Cottage are independent Corporations. Sansum is comprised of a Medical foundation which supports Sansum the multi-specialty clinic or amalgamation of Many Doctors and many specialties and sub-specialties. Cottage provides Hospital Services through its three Hospitals and some out-patient services also through its hospitals. Hospitals in California are precluded from directly employing Doctors (except in very specific cases) so instead Doctors voluntarily seek and are approved for privileges to practice ( as independent contractors) at the hospitals and many Sansum and independent doctors have privileges to practice at Cottage. Santa Barbara is blessed because both are very good at what they do and the area is blessed with high quality independent physicians who provide choice.

Crooked cops chasing a deranged cop, shooting two innocent bystanders in the process. When asked about the guy on the loose, the cops said he was shooting innocent people. You mean like the two innocent women shot by cops for being in a Nissan truck?

This is what you get when you throw money at the police department and then have them self-police their own. The fox guarding the hen house. The whole thing is sick and twisted. There used to be another hospital in town but it closed years ago. Now Cottage is the only hospital, with branches in Goleta and Santa Ynez.

Broken Westside Water Main

@850 that depends on how many miles of water mains there are, vs. the age of the water mains in general, where the mains are being replaced, how it is determined which mains are replaced -- e.g. based on failure rates, or age, or what? If 75% of the water mains are 40+ years old, then replacing a mile a year is not attacking the problem. Not enough information on the subject to know the answer.

Cottage vs Sansum

2013-02-07 02:17 PM

Sansum and Cottage are not technically the same entity but they do have an official affiliation.

What that means is that Sansum refers patients exclusively to Cottage (say you need planned surgery) and Cottage refers patients (say, for example, you go into ER and are released by follow up is recommended) to Sansum.

This is not unusual. But since we have a monopoly in town, there's no other local hospital that Sansum could be affiliated with.

You can actually find more information about the affiliation on Sansum and Cottage's own websites. And probably more accurate than you will get here.

As for your question about childrens' 'hospitals', Sansum is a clinic. They will refer you in house to specialists and they do have a pediatric section. But Cottage is a hospital and doesn't have pediatricians.

Sansum is an outpatient clinic. Cottage--Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Ynez are hospitals. Your pediatrician might come from Sansum Clinic or an independent group. He or she might then have hospital privileges at Cottage should your child ever have the need for hospitalization. Santa Barbara Cottage hospital has neonatal/pediatric intensive care units & pediatric floor so it is most likely where your little one would be hospitalized (hopefully never). Lots of good kid docs in town--ask a respected friend. They may be part of Sansum or not.

Santa Maria police say driver alleg...

2013-02-07 01:11 PM

I don't think the penalties for driving without a license are strict enough. If you don't have a valid license and insurance, you should not be on the road. Law enforcement, due to pressure by the misinformed, has dialed down the penalties - that was a mistake. It sounds overly basic but a lot of unlicensed drivers simply do not know how to drive properly making them even more of a hazard.

875P - ask an average person who's gotten charged with DUI - it changes your life forever - most of those people will never ever drink and drive again. 10K, a record, getting dropped by your insurance company and you could even lose your job. It's effective to a point. And yes, the real bad offenders continue to re-offend but you can't win every battle. They can have checkpoints every day as far as I'm concerned. And if they get the no license, no insurance, suspended license fools off the road at the same time, so be it.

He was fired for ratting out a fellow cop for using excessive force against a mentally ill young boy, which was corroborated in court. He crossed the blue line. I don't agree with him killing innocent people, nor do I think being a vigilante is ever justified but as far as crooked cops, it makes me wonder if to some extent they are reaping what they have sowed as there is really no recourse against crooked cops and there are tons on the LAPD. If you read his UNCENSORED manifesto (the ones on the major networks are censored) it's pretty interesting and makes it obvious that unless you are a specific crooked cop in the LAPD this guy is not dangerous. And, the cops are now also shooting at innocent bystanders.

Great white shark becomes candidate...

2013-02-07 11:08 AM

"The Great White Shark is incredibly important for maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. Because it is a top predator, it plays an important role in hunting out prey that are not as healthy as others, which keep the stocks that it feeds on in a healthier state. If you remove the top predator from the ecosystem, the repercussions can be quite dramatic. In some cases where sharks have declined there has been a wholesale decrease in all the species in the ecosystem. Ecosystems have evolved over millions of years in a very delicate balance, one in which the white shark as an “apex” predator has helped to maintain.

The shark faces a variety of threats. Commercially, it is targeted for its fins, jaws, teeth, liver oil, skin and meat. It is also targeted by recreational sports fishers. In addition, white sharks are also caught accidently by commercial fishing operations and discarded with the other “bycatch.”

Because of its wide range as a large predator, the white shark could serve as an umbrella species for the conservation of many marine species. Protecting the white shark could help protect whole marine ecosystems. "

As for the Great Whites, I don't know whether they are endangered or not. I'd like to read more. Their range is broad and the numbers around here are not particularly meaningful in terms of species totals. It may say simply that there is more prey, seals, for instance, here.

No drug testing for local law enfor...

2013-02-07 10:41 AM

759/793: It's based on whether the judge thinks the person is likely to run. Maybe the gang banger has family ties to people in another country. Maybe he already ran. Maybe he made some comment in court about it. We have no clue. Besides, the comment on the bail amounts made it sound like you thought a tagger should have a smaller bail amount that a drug dealer. The charges often have nothing to do with it. That would be what 769 was saying. And you don't KNOW the PO won't run. But if the judge thinks he's less of a flight risk, his bail is lower. That's just how it works.
As for the no drug testing cops, if someone is able to do their job & they don't show up to work on drugs, I don't particularly care what they do in their "off" time. I assume they can still test cops if they suspect drug use on the job (or after hours drug use if it affects the job). They don't drug test welfare recipients, and that's the one place I would really like to see it happen.

Great white shark becomes candidate...

2013-02-07 10:26 AM

I seriously doubt if great white sharks are critically endangered. They seem to be doing quite well around here. Let's hope it's more about the actual science, and less about the politics (though with a few of the members of the F&W Commission, that's an alien concept).

If we'd like to much more cheaply and efficiently save endangered species world-wide, the answer is to distribute free human birth control world-wide, and change the tax laws to strongly discourage anyone from having more than 1 child. If humans' world-wide population returned to 3-4 billion, from it's current 7+ billion, we'd return to sustainable levels, where we weren't endangering everything else, as well as our own selves through destruction of habitat. In most environmental problems, too many humans is the real source problem.

A murder-suicide that claimed the l...

2013-02-07 10:26 AM

The "murder suicide" explanation is the knee-jerk pronouncement of the media. Forensic findings wont be released for another 2 weeks.

761: Re. "bipolar". If you can't provide evidence, then you are likely making this up. Commercial airlines (and US Central Intelligence) tend not to employ bipolars, and personnel have the medical and background checks to weed out those who are inappropriate for the position.

Before his 20 year career as a commercial captain, Marshall flew as a CIA contract pilot, unwittingly bringing huge quantities of cocaine into the country: Oliver North was his handler. Barry Seal was his direct contact, who was coincidentally assassinated. Gary Webb the San Jose journalist who investigated the scandal "killed himself" with TWO gunshots to the head. (Yeah, right).

Mr. Marshall was a devoted father and adored his kids. He often canceled business appointments to drive all the way home to be with his son when he had a Little League game.

Or, better idea, if you want to recycle them, take them to the recycling station (County Dump Road, between Turnpike & El Sueno on Calle Real). it's free & you're less likely to have issues trying to recycle there as they take pretty much everything. No drug testing for local law enfor...

2013-02-07 10:09 AM

The headline here on Edhat is misleading and incendiary.

*Currently* SLO does not conduct ongoing drug testing. However, based on recent developments, they are reconsidering that.

"But both agencies agree, the benefits out way those costs.

"I absolutely think it's worth the expense," said (Sheriff) Parkinson, "It's going to be a little more expensive and it's going to be a little more challenging especially in today's budget but it's worth it."

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office met today to discuss policy changes to include drug testing and the San Luis Obispo Police Department has been working for a year to include such policies, which will go into effect next month.

After the news of Cory Pierce's arrest yesterday, members of the narcotics and gang unit at the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office asked to be drug tested to prove their integrity. According to the sheriff, everyone passed. "

Organisms can only grow in size and complexity as they improve communication and functionality. Humanity stands at a terrifying crossroads: The same technology that may permit us to support the population we now have (let alone what could come very soon) in the wrong hands could allow the kinds of sociopaths and megalomaniacs who have caused humanity such misery could bend these new capacities to hellish ends. The only way to maintain our civilization, and the potential for a future worth living, is to keep the control of these technologies securely in public hands, and subject to public oversight. Privatizing technology, so that wealth and power flows to dark places to serve greed and paranoia, is the kiss of death. Just my opinion.

Arlington -> Cathedral -> Inspirati...

2013-02-07 09:25 AM

The bobcats left long before the recent fires or FS clearing of the ridge top trail They left after the trail from mission cyn to cathedral, was zealously over-worked by pirate trail trimmers. The path was easy to follow even in the 1970's but then became a freeway, inviting hapless recuees and grafitti artists. How wide a tread and clearing does a trail need to be? Where do we draw the line on ease of access? Because its there and because we can are not a valid rationales for trail construction. Where is the demonstrated need?

I propose that trails be built and maintained with the least impact necessary. Trails should be no wider than use required, in these cases, single file foot traffic. To me, it's simply a matter of keeping wild wild. The amount of quality access to quality nature already available in our neck of the woods is staggering. At some point that quality slips away never to return.

The couple also had prior dealings with the police...still, a sad way to 'deal' with your issues, whatever they were. RIP innocent ones.

Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Ac...

2013-02-07 08:02 AM

I am SO glad to see the flashing lights technology, having seen it in other cities and thought: We should have that! Also note that parts of Milpas that were wide or confusing have been narrowed down to two lanes, which makes it more manageable for traffic and pedestrians. (I once went to a seminar of a nationally known city-traffic planner, and he said the most dangerous type of street for pedestrians was the wide urban four-lane including a center turn lane, as on Milpas -- it's too much for drivers to take in visually.) Now if peds would help by looking both ways when they cross the street, keeping an eye on stopped cars while crossing - a driver might get distracted or his brakes fail - and by not flinging their car doors open into the traffic lane without looking.

Why do they plant so many trees that have 'seed' droppings? We dont get a lot of rain so the roots stay near the surface and uproot the sidewalks...Ive noticed that in my neighborhood they have planted more of the same as they did about 25 yrs. ago-those have grown so tall that I cannot even see the mountains from my yard now..oak trees are native and do drop acorns but nothing like the awful things they planted on Bath St. Does anyone know how to get them to replace them with something else?

Three Wheeler Dog

2013-02-07 07:47 AM

Years ago Bob and Shirley Jansen, founders of DAWG, took Levi under their wing(s). They wanted to donate to the vets (Bob is a celebrated war hero, tho he keeps that to himself), but figured the only way they could be assured it would go to a vet and not administrative costs would be to find a deserving vet and help him directly. They found Levi. Levi selected a dog from DAWG as a companion, the Jansens took care of the dogs' medical needs, and when the dog died of happy old age, he got another pal from DAWG. There may have been 3 dogs over the years. When his last dog died of old age, he decided he wanted a dog small enough to ride with him. He came to DAWG, and there was Marley, like he was waiting for Levi. We were all trepedatious about this little dog riding on a trike, but Marley took to it (as he took to Levi) like he was born to it

What if usfs decides it would make avoid 40' wide fuel break? You trail pioneers are overly enthusiastic about making new trails, higher use over more of the forest to satisfy your desires and egos. Bootleg trails are generally not ok. Illegal brushing caused the

The mind your own business mentality of some posters is frightening. Law enforcement officers in this country work for the citizens, are paid by the citizens and are under the control and scrutiny of the citizens. The ARE our business. The MYOB mentality in Nazi Germany was a prevailing attitude at that time in that country and led to unspeakable horrors. I'm glad the OP asked the question (and did so in an intelligent and respectful way). I completely agree that the spanking he/she immediately received was an attempt by law enforcement trolls at retaliation and was a blast of intimidation intended to shut him/her down from further questions about cops. Schoolyard bullying tactics. Lets keep watching, asking and thinking about the conduct of law enforcement in this community. Thank you OP.

It is amazing how many posters seize upon the opportunity to make fun of police officers protecting them. Discounting the inevitable wize cracks about donuts, it is still remarkable there are those willing to draw conclusions about the number of officers present without knowing a thing about the reasons for it. Obviously it was multi-jurisdictional so not a run of the mill investigation. Secondly one of the methods employed by officers where there is a possibility of a problem (belligerent subject, liklihood of attempted escape, report of a gun or other weapon, additional suspects involved, etc.) then sufficient assistance is there as a back up. Sufficient numbers of officers are often a deterrent to problems reducing the liklihood officers might be required to use force during the course of contact with a suspect. Edhat needs to provide a forum just for police haters so that they can vent all of their hostility without injecting it into unrelated forums as often happens.

371695 - three people have been killed by great whites in the last 2 years and you want to kill them all.

How many people have died from gun violence since Sandy Hook less than 2 months ago - over a thousand. People killing people. Does that means we should kill all the people?

How many people have died in car accidents in the last 2 years? Thousands. Does that mean we should kill all cars?

How many people have died of food poisoning in the last 2 years? Far, far more than 3? Should food be banned?

How many people have died because of medical mistakes in the last 2 years? Thousands. Does that mean the medical help should be outlawed, and all doctors killed?

How many people have been killed in wars and conflicts in the last two months - thousands. Humans are lethal. Should they all be killed?

In comparison, Great White Sharks are relatively benign.

This is a mystery as well as a tragedy. The wife and mother was in Turkey, setting up a business to sell..... "saffron" ? The father accused the US and Saudi Arabia of conspiracy in 911 and also was a pilot for the CIA in Iran Contra? Wow, this could be a book all in itself.

One of the strangest bits in the story is the murder of the dog. Why would the father do that? If it was your dog, he wouldn't bark or create a fuss with you in the room, but if a stranger was there certainly might. Also the fact that all occurred in a living room where the father's body could be seen from the front door? Almost like it was a message.

This was not an exercise in police bashing it was merely a question on how our resources are being used/spent. It was an observation. I respect our police and firefighters and believe they earn every penny they make and in my book deserve more. It infects the administration of justice. They are handsomely paid for their level of education and do not face a high degree of risk given the local demographic. Stop coddling them. They are our employees and need to be accountable for their wasteful conduct. Two officers, with all their training, devices, etc. is plenty to keep one average strength person under control.
