Brian Peddicord: 1181's comment is worth considering: art is indeed supposed to promote controversy — if differences of opinion are not wanted then perhaps what's being presented is not, is not intended to be art. 882P here and I called your photo "beautiful" --- I also thought it was staged and you and your friend basically acknowledged that. This was not a scene that you just happened upon. Fine, no problem. As others (and I, too) have said, it's beautiful and unusual. Congrats to you! I have indeed posted pictures on edhat, quite a few in the past, including now cliched sunsets, and they were met with praise and criticism, too. I learned from the criticism and tried not to glow too much with the praise. There are plenty of photographers on edhat now so I do not bother anymore to send in photos, except rarely, so you can hold your criticism, constructive or not.

I haven't knocked on strangers' doors myself, yet, but I've been tempted, for izote (yucca) flowers, but they are too high up (I have a neighbor who makes soup with them). Loquats call to me, loudly. My parents have gotten callers at their door about their fruit trees. We have a neighborhood network between citrus, persimmons and avocados. I sure could go for an avocado tonight. Agree with Sharon about Foodbank "gleaners" or donations to them. Do what you want with the goods, just don't let the food go to waste! I'd say more but I'd get flamed.

The fitness center at Vista del Monte is open to the public and offers a large number of aqua aerobics classes as well as personal trainers who have a lot of experience working with clients with various joint replacement issues. I'd also recommend Zumba Gold and there are a number of classes offered locally. Check it out at Zumba.com. This is all assuming you've spoken with your doctor for recommendations and you've completed your rehabilitation and physical therapy

If birds poop in their former habitat places (but people now live there), trees get cut down so they can't do that anymore (and especially not raise more young in those trees). If people poop, it just goes into the ocean and everything is ok.

A very wise, old, and reliable professional in the medical field, and good friend of mine for many years warned me about KP...after his daughter was treated there with a very sad and dismal result. In his own words he said, "There are dead people there they don't even know about." The message he was conveying I remember to this day - minimal attention to the patient with little if any concern for the outcome. Very recently...my sister-in-law's father was told by a KP physician that there was no hope for his melanoma cancer. Her family has since received a secondary medical opinion outside of the KP system which is positively different (UCLA).

The idea, if they are not scammers, is nice to put unused fruit and vegetables put to good use--even if it profit for strangers. I see a lot of citrus, perfectly good, rotting because property owners don't pick it. It bothers me to see any food thrown away. I wonder though, what about liability? There's no way around a lawsuit if a person picking with your permission fell off a ladder or tripped.

I thought Cat5e was fine for up to gigabit ethernet, which (if true) would fulfill most people's home networks (YMMV). Totally agree with others that if you are paying a pro to do the install just go with Cat6 since most of the cost will be in the labor and terminations.

I did it myself. Fortunately, the house is on a raised floor and is single story, so access was not too bad. Got all the Leviton QuickPort parts from California Electric off Milpas, plenum cable from Home Depot. Newegg also has plenum in stock. If your house is multi-story and on slab, make sure whomever you hire has experience with this situation. Some commercial installers work mostly with offices where a false cieling or raised floor makes the work easier (well, at least different). Cat6 vs Cat5e is a no-brainer, the difference in cost won't be that much unless you are really pinching pennies (in which case you should do it yourself) or live in a mansion.

I had a hip replacement within the last 6 months. I was proactive. I sought out a physical therapist and then, when my post surgical program was ending with the therapist, put the therapist together with a personal trainer and defined a program going forward A good physical therapist is key and it is covered by most insurances. Degreed personal trainers often have units in rehabilitation and a good one is worth the time and energy as well as the $$. Don't sit still if your hip was done well you can reclaim your life!

You didn't give much information about your situation, so this is a difficult question to answer. I assume that you have finished your rehab but you should check with your surgeon or the PT who worked with you. Make sure you have a clear understanding on whether they want you to follow movement precautions and for how long. Do not expect personal trainers or group exercise instructors to answer these questions for you, they are not qualified to do so. The earlier suggestion for water exercise is excellent.

Roger for this to happen, his defense had to file a motion to declare a doubt of his competency to stand trial. The typical process is the defendant is interviewed by a mental health professional who writes a report that is then sent to the judge. It is in no way a punishment.

Kaiser is in Ventura and south. I for one recently switched (2 years ago) from a 'good' PPO to Kaiser and I absolutly love it. My doctors at Kaiser are fantastic, responsive and caring. I have seen everything from primary care, dermatology, pediatrician, to psychology for both me and my children. I couldn't be more surprised or happier at what excellent care I have received.

The loud boom sounded like a cherry bomb or M-80. I also heard at least one more pop that sounded like a regular firecracker which seemed to come from a different direction. How come every time I think it's a gun shot I'm told it was a firecracker or backfire? Then when it sounds like fireworks to me they say it's a gunshot?

I don't think they sent him to a mental hospital as punishment for setting the flag on fire, Roger. They sent him there because there were other reasons why this happened, and clearly he's got other issues besides the fire that informed the decision to send him to a State Hospital.

885, bacterial contamination? Check out the recall list for every major grocery store chain in the past few months. Mass marketed food is just as dangerous - if not moreso - than hand made food. Also, I'd trust people whose livelihood depends on repeat business than a bigger chain, in certain instances. 000, they aren't authentic by any means, but they do make a good tamale for sale at Costco. Try it, you might like it. As for local, two months ago, the tamales they had were from Ventura. So, your argument is a bit under-researched!

Except the Mythbusters episode being referenced here dealt with guns being fired at 90 degrees into the air, AKA straight up. It didn't deal at all with bullets fired at an angle less than 90 degrees, which has been proven on more than one occasion to have the potential to kill people. There's a great thing on StackExchange about this with some great math by actual physicists instead of people who are paid to make this stuff look great on TV. Not to mention the fact that they mention in the Mythbusters episode (episode 50, by the way) they mention that bullets fired below 90 degrees can travel a great distance and inflict harm. The moral of the story is this: TV is not a reliable source for information. Do your own research, educate yourself and stop listening to Adam and Jamie as if they are the Only True Scientific Gospel.

The Rosinkas seem to be something of a family dynasty--a mother and her daughters. Haven't you noticed there are four or five locations--all "Madame Rosinka?" Each daughter has a location. I went to see one of them in the 90's. The first thing is that she is not a palm reader, she barely looked at mine. She closed her eyes while she spoke, which makes her a psychic. I feel she gave me very good advice, but she also tried to hook me into coming back. Perhaps everyone should try something like this once. It's always good to look at yourself.

Say what you will, and ridicule all you like - I know that there are people around who are psychically gifted, and have direct personal evidence to that fact. My daughter consulted a woman who says she can communicate with the souls of departed loved ones. In the process, this psychic told my daughter something about my father, that he never told anyone, but me. In effect, I am the ONLY living human being to know this story about his life and times, and it is definitely VERY UNIQUE to him, and to the place where he happened to be at the time. My own brother told my daughter there was no way the psychic had it right. That's because he wasn't there that afternoon 40 years ago, when my father told the story to ME. Don't try to discredit something you do not possess, nor understand.

Actually bullets fired up into the air do not have the velocity to kill. They fall back to earth at the very same 166 ft/s everything else does and bounce off of most things they hit... Search Mythbusters for a more detailed explanation. Not that shooting a gun up into the air is a good idea, its just not deadly. But it sure would give you a headache.

I think it is a really good idea and it will protect both police and citizens who might be unjustly charged. Had there been a camera in the police car for the Peter Lance stop, charges might never have happened (or, alternatively, he might have been found guilty of DUI); similarly, for the stop in Loreto Plaza that created so much attention.

103 - I saw that one too. But they were shooting vertically. If the bullet is not shot straight up, but at even a slight angle, it may not slow down enough and could very possibly kill anything it hits. I think the point here is, DO NOT shoot guns into the air!

Way more fishermen and truck drivers die a year. But for some reason they need a tank and gunship helicopters. Last I checked a good helicopter cost 5 million. Kaiser began as Kaiser Steel, got massive contracts to build ships on San Francisco Bay during WWll, imported thousands of workers to work the shipyards and found it cost effective to provide their own medical care to their workers... workers were in short supply then, it was good to keep them healthy. After the war they kept the medical thing going and expanded it to other big employers. My parents got in through my dad's employer, UC, and my brother and I were born in Kaiser Oakland and Kaiser Vallejo in the 1960s. Recently my mother received excellent surgical care at Kaiser Richmond and through the Kaiser Hospice in Alameda. I think like everything else in medicine it depends on where you live and exactly what you need. In her case, she found a great lung surgeon in Richmond, which was close enough to where she lived. And several years later she found wonderful Buddhist hospice nurses at home in Alameda. Kaiser's treatment of medicare patients was superb, in her case. I am very thankful. I know it's not the same for everyone.

If you are on felony probation you cannot own a gun. After probation, I'm unsure. From the story, "Thomas Christensen, 21, will not be allowed to possess any firearms and will also be ordered to spend 240 days in County Jail as part of the terms of the agreement, prosecutor Kevin Weichbrod said." It's unclear if he will EVER be allowed to own a gun.

058 - There is no "gun show loophole" in California. It was closed by state legislation years ago. California is one of six states that require all firearm transactions including private party transactions (or a sale from a private collection) to go through a firearms dealer (including all gun show transactions). The gun show loophole currently exists in 33 states. There are 11 other states that have rules that limit gun show transactions in some ways, but not as restrictive as California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon and Rhode Island.

046P - Deckers provides jobs to people who live in Goleta and SB and Carp. Many companies who employ local residents get the majority of their manufacturing done overseas. It really does not matter as long as the consumers want the products. The consumers make the rules - anyone on a paper chase knows that. Local consumers send their message loud and clear....to the great and deserved benefit of the VC. Another vote for Jesse - he is gruff but he gets the job done - he will tell you straight away what he can and cannot do.

Jesse's stitched my Uggs when they had a small tear - the first time. Used sand colored thread and it wasn't very noticable at all. Second time when the stitches came undone, my husband took them back and asked them to patch them. He meant stitch, but they took him literally so they cut a piece of suede and GLUED it over the hole. It looked so crappy. Just be sure to specify that you want the tear STITCHED not patched. Lesson learned the hard way for me.

Decker's owns the trademark and fights aggressively to protect it, though the word predates them by a long, long time. Worse, it's a bit of a scam to flog the word "Australia" when they're based in Goleta and get work done cheap in China with second-rate materials, while several authentic Aussie sheepskin boot makers continue working with pride and top-notch goods but get grief for calling traditional uggs Uggs. Compare the quality some time. It's all about branding and investing in a good legal team to keep profits up.

I think it's great she has been able to turn her talent to profit. Plus, it sounds like she has made many people happier.

It is a proven fact that it is unnecessary and polluting to leave any engine idling for over 30 seconds. When you stop in front of a store, in your driveway, at the curb (to make your cell phone calls) and then you leave your engine idling, for your convenience or to keep your car warm or cool, you are a polluter. Turn off your car! Diesel is different, or so I've heard. However, for the non-diesel crowd: I witness my friends and people in all sorts of situations letting their vehicles idle on and on and on. Pollution.

Oh but in SB 900k qualifies as affordable housing! I wonder who will occupy these units? Retired dentists from UT? Part timers from LA? Who ever it is they'll be part time residents with their units being rented on AirBnB the rest of the 49 weeks a year they're not here... And to top it off you get the privilege of living with true low income units and all the merits of these low earners... Why do they continue to force a lifestyle onto a town that has its own already? These utopian developments never work out for anyone other than the architects that design them or the contractors that build them... No one who works downtown and is going to live in a 1bdrm can afford 900k - 1.2m - stupid development brought to you by our inept city workers...

Actually, these cameras do tend to be expensive and the cost also typically covers installation. They don't just buy your garden variety HD webcam from Costco; they have to meet specific durability requirements and other criteria set forth by police departments. Is it still a bit much? Yeah, sure. But not entirely ridiculous.

If they work as intended (whether to prove or dis-prove allegations of misconduct) I suppose it's worth it, but I can't help thinking that 1) it could be done for far, far less $, and 2) that the PD will only make footage available that supports officers claims.

So unless something is clearly wrong on the xrays or mri's then they will be back at 'it feels bad'. But yes, rule out the obvious before progressing to one of these other therapies. If it isn't a degenerating or injured bone or disk problem then chiros can help with the muscle stuff or a misalignment. Get a recommendation from a friend that has had a similar problem and I advise to make sure that they use only gentle touch. I would never let a force chiro touch my spine.

The Uggs brand is now owned by Deckers in Goleta. My mother made the very quaint observation last week that she was glad Deckers was expanding at Hollister/Los Carneros so that "more manufacturing jobs would stay in town". I didn't think anything was actually manufactured by Deckers in Goleta. All of their shoes are made offshore, right? Uggs were made in Australia when I had a pair in the 80s, but presume those days are long gone.

Police car video recording follows a SOP. It can be used to show how to interact with the public as a training video. It can also be used in a court both to support the police officer's position or the defendants. I support this purchase.

Absolute travesty! They will only produce videos when its convenient for the cops. Just like the TV stations will cover a chase right up to the point that they get the person out of the car and on the ground, but cut video coverage as soon as the cops jump on the perp. Somebody must have an "in" with the contract award. Nearly $10,000.00 per car! What a rip off!

Not that uncommon. Our neighbors do it, too. Not something I'd do with my car on the street, however.

Lack of Kaiser Permanente Facilitie... |

Got Kaiser in LA when I was about 12. What a difference it made to me and my family. We had access to medical care and pharmacy services without bankruptcy or use of the emergency hospitals. Stayed on Kaiser until moved to SB where it was not available. Missed it then and now. My mother and father stayed on Kaiser in the LA and then Ventura area and are always full of praise about the considerate and competent nature of its service. My sister is a nurse and vouches for the quality Kaiser provides. Kaiser is a remarkable service that should be emulated nationwide. Those snobs who want to believe "you only get what you pay for" need to understand that what you are paying for with many medical providers and services is huge profit or very large annual incomes.

You have to admit this guy chose to make a spectacle out of his suicide. The train dragged his body right up to the State Street crossing, where hundreds of people and some children got to see it, not to mention the poor train driver. I don't judge this person for killing himself, but I think the way he did it wasn't OK. So 946, I have to wonder how you would feel if this guy dove under your car, near your home with your family watching. That's what I thought....it's not easy to forgive.

I'm on San Andres and someone was knocking on my door at 3:30am. But, when I looked outside, I saw about 5 cop cars and a dozen of cops walking around the street and sidewalk, kinda fast. Wasn't sure if it was the bad guy or the cops knocking. When I got downstairs and out my door, a couple Cop cars zoomed off, then came back, and they arrested some guy and were putting him in the vehicle, while he was screaming in a high-pitched voice. I heard one Officer trying to calm him down, like he knew him and his family, saying they were gonna get him some help and he was gonna call his father... But, the Officer was being very very gentle and nice with him. That was happening on San Andres & Victoria. I didn't see any other neighbors outside their houses. The other Officers were rushing back to their vehicles, so I didn't want to ask them what happened. But, I would really like to know if it was the Officers that were knocking on my door. They weren't POUNDING, but knocked a few times.

It's funny, I almost stopped posting pictures on EdHat because of all the negative comments I often receive. But, when I took this candid (not-staged) photo of my friend this weekend and got home and reviewed it, I thought to myself, "Wow, this is awesome, I bet people would enjoy this." I have no shame in admitting it. Why is it that it's ok for others to tell you your work is great, but when you say your own work is great, now you are a some sort of jerk? It's an interesting world we live in. I will never apologize for loving myself and appreciating my own art. The reason for the disclaimer was because in the past when I posted photos, I immediately would have some Brooks dropout start picking it apart and telling me how my ISO was too low or some other technical photography criticism. I do this for fun, so I am not concerned with all that. If a photo is cool, I could care less whether I had the correct aperture. I am going to respond to every one of you: RODGER DODGER - Thank you :) 813 - I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic since sarcasm doesn't translate via text, but if you are then what was the point of that? Really? Was it necessary? REXOFSB - Thank you as always for your support. I really appreciate it :) PAMSB - That means a lot to me. Thank you. I try to capture (with my videos and photos) people having fun and doing what they love, and I think this does a good job of that. DANOO7 - So do I! I'm glad you agree. Thank you for the comment. They don't normally do shoes, but once they fixed a little patch on some tall leather boots I had and while it wasn't seamless it was unnoticeable. Not sure how they could fix uggs since they are a more unusual texture to patch, but it's worth a shot. We have Kaiser in town. It's called Sansum, though. It's the exact same standard and model of care, based in the beginning on basic HMO style medical care and evolving to what we have now, which is...kinda still like that. Need a specialist? Get bounced around within the Sansum system over and over until you get the right one. Then be told there's not a whole lot you can do if the problem you have isn't within their scope, you'll have to start all over elsewhere. It's the same exact way with Kaiser. The reason they come out best in large hospital surveys is just that....large hospitals have different standards. If they came into town they wouldn't BE a large hospital, people.

I the OP is talking about acute back pain, something that just started and is getting worse without home treatment. Yes, a doctor should be seen just in case. But the comments that it could be cancer or something are just out of bounds. That kind of pain comes on more subtly and doesn't progress to extreme pain in six days. This also doesn't sound like a case for surgery or spinal manipulation. It's a lower back issue, which is usually easily remedied once you figure out where the injury or strain is coming from. (Could even be your glutes or thighs being too tight.) Why scare people based on something you guys know nothing about?

Back pain can be complex to unravel but yes, see a medical doctor (osteopath) before seeing a chiropractor and avoid surgery if you don't absolutely need it. After 15 years of pain, I'm finally pain-free after seeing an acupuncturist PLUS doing yoga and core work 4x week, walking or biking every day (and giving up running), getting a memory foam bed, getting massages 2x/ a month, and seeing a chiropractor 6x a year. Not unlike keeping your weight down, having back pain is something you have to work at not getting after you've had it (at least, that's been my and others I know experience).

Whenever there is any crime, particularly robbery, theft, drunk and drug related offenses and including driving under the influence, the first place to look is the Chumash casino. A two months ago an 18 year old DUI was involved in a fatal auto accident in Santa Maria and admitted he was coming from the casino. Only a couple of weeks ago two tribal members under the influence of drugs were killed in a hit and run accident on the 154 on their way from the casino. The hit and run driver that killed at least one of them was found at the casino. The Chumash casino is the hub of all criminal activity in this county and attracts criminal elements from over 100 miles in every direction. It is almost single handedly the reason highway 154/San Marcos Pass Road has become a veritable "slaughter alley"!

Agree with 80P; before the knife or any other invasive treatment, consider a gentler approach. Depending on what ails you there are obviously many paths to take. Suffering from functional scoliosis (curvature of the lower spine so severe my clothes needed to be tailored to fit properly) for years and mild to severe lower back pain, I went to a few extremely competent yoga instructors and after finding out how misaligned my body was from flat feet to rounded shoulders and everything in between slumped and distorted, decided to literally "straighten out" my back with exercises in yoga and the complement of daily walks. Based on the East Indian Ayurvedic health system, yoga also helps with dietary changes away from the heavy meat and animal product intake to healthier vegetable, legume and fruit mainstays in the diet. After a while most meats actually start to smell and taste bad as the body adjusts to healthier fare. It took a while but it works. After several years, now have no pain, full athletic ability, straight back and posture, strong abdomen, even have arches restored to my feet while turning fat to muscle and losing weight. After seeing all the comments for invasive medical intervention, it is no surprise how few people go for the holistic " from the inside out approach". We place our faith in someone else to fix us. At 63 am in the best shape of my life, with routine bicycling, nordic skiing, hiking and aerobic style yoga with 20 year olds. And no meds of any kind.

@884. I'm with you. Why is the question. Why because Santa Barbarans want to look all weathy and hip but ultimately a majority of them are cheap. They settle for HMO/Sansum cattle drive healthcare and then they complain about it all the time yet don't do anything about it. They still sign up for HMO or some IPA that gives the doctor all the power to choose their care. But like my sister-in-law, she signed away all of her own power and signed away her acupuncturist and chiro who were helping her more than the medical doctor. Now she is complaining 24/7 about her back pain but is too cheap to pay her massage therapist/acupunturist and chiro herself. Apparently, Sansum doctors won't let her see these even though her insurance says she has it.

The key here is the onset. Was there a sudden traumatic movement, strain or impact that brought on the symptoms or a long gradual onset getting progressively worse? Typically pain and burning sensations that radiate down the leg are symptoms of a herniated or damaged spinal disc (one or more). Most good Orthopeodic doctors will attempt a number of possible theraputic and conservative treatments to alleviate the pain and strengthen supporting muscles structures. This INCLUDES losing weight if one has excessive weight around the torso thus straining the spinal column. A soft brace may also help. If surgery is ultimately needed there have been and still are a number of new procedures being used minimizing the surgical intrusion and using artificial discs or spacers.

The backround view of La Cunbre Peak puts this location at or near the Cathedral Oaks and San Marcos Pass roads area. The poster who guessed the County Schools, County/Fire HQ. site is closest to the correct location. La Patera Ranch has a similar entry but you would not get that view of La Cumbre Peak and there are much steeper foothills abutting the entrance to La Patera Ranch.

I used Kaiser when we lived in Ventucky, and I loved it. The doctors were great and they could prescribe any medications, not just the ones they were told to prescribe. Also, the online tools were easy and convenient. Now I am here in 'Paradise on the Pacific' and have switched to HealthNet which uses Sansum. I think they look very much the same and are both great for health care.

I understand that the standardized insurance payments paid to doctors in SB County are significantly less than in Ventura County. This is a result of the fact that when the rates were setup, SB County was considered a more rural place and the cost of living was less. Google "medicare reimbursements lower in santa barbara county".

I highly recommend seeing a medical doctor first. I hate to be an alarmist but my husband's lower back pain turned out to be cancer. If he had let it go for 6 more months he would be dead by now. I, also, had an upper back pain that would not go away for months while seeing a chiropractor. It turned out I had a sleep disorder and the reason my back was not healing is because I was not getting enough sleep. Healing happens during sleep. Once, I was treated for the sleep disorder, the pain went away. And by the way, my health and energy went way up, too!

I am astonished that so many people seem to enjoy ridicule of others and feel so self confident that only their opinions are valid. I believe in the evidence that there are clairvoyant people but do not personally consult them for myself. This doesn't place me in any position to judge those who do. My mother told me that if I couldn't say something good to keep my mouth shut. That advice has generally served me well. Rather akin to the definition, "Tact is the art of making ones point without making enemies."

It _is_ funny if the photographer described his own photo as "awesome", especially since it is quite likely that his beautiful snap was a staged effort. Me, I don't think of photos, especially not my own, as "captures", the hunting imagery, although a photo does freeze a scene in one's memory. Well, sometimes I do feel happily I captured the fleeting feeling of a moment in the step of a bird or a nod of a flower. As for being a pro: that's someone who makes his living from photography and probably applies to few (any?) of us here.

I wish I had opportunity to see the Eurasian Collared Doves. My National Wildlife Federation Bird Book says on the Eurasian Collared Doves: In the mid-1970s, Eurasian Collared-Doves escaped from an aviary in the Bahamas; by 1978 some had dispersed to Florida. The species has since multiplied and spread into North America, especially into suburbs of the South and West; it is expected to be abundant across the continent in a few decades. A smaller, paler avicultural form "ringed Turtle-Dove", is often seen in southern states, and some birds in North America appear to be of mixed derivation. VOICE: a harsh ho-hooo-ho, repeated also a nasal haaow.

My all time personal fave was a Greek grocer in Belmont, MA who did his own signs and wrote them the way he spoke his own brand of very charmingly accented English: "Ekks, $1.00 per dusan." How could you not love that? He was definitely part of what gave the neighborhood its unique character.

Gee, is every submission now going to have a disclaimer of some sort or a note re what is being represented, in this case, the photographer's "art." Seems rather silly and overly defensive. Nice photograph.

NATURE BOY: Please send Madam a psychic vibe. Maybe she will correct her sign, if you "tell" her it's not good English. OR maybe she wants to appear to be a foreigner, with poor grasp of our language . . . tricky. Very tricky.
