Hollywood-Like Glamour

I do not wish to be a whiner complaining of the whiners.Let us just call them Nimbys for the time bring and let me tell you my tale. Years ago the County adopted an ordinance which called for all developers to dedicate a piece of land to the county to be used in the future for a neighborhood park. You can see them all over the county. Most are unkempt and will never look good. My suggestion was for all developers to dedicate 25 or 50 feet from the centerline of any creek running from the National Forest to the mean high tide to be used as a hiking , Biking or other recreational purpose trail. Eventually we would have had a path from the mean high tide line on the beach to the natural forest located above us. You guessed it. Everyone said it was a great idea but Not In My Back Yard. For your information the bike trail from Downtown to the University has increased the value of the properties which adjoin it. It is an asset but I didn't want to fight the Naysayers so the creeks remain but there isn't any trail from the Beach to the National Forest. The idea came from England where you can walk from one side of the country to the other side, right through Private property.

Casa Dorinda - Montecito's Downton ...

2013-01-26 10:57 PM

Fascinating story and so well written. Thank you!

...as far as the tree pictured, it is a Coast Redwood, Sequoia sempervirons, native to the wet coast range from Oregon to Big Sur. The handcarved plaque mentions a different species, Sequoia gigantea ( the kind growing in the Sierra east of Visalia) native to higher and much colder elevations. It would have struggled in the war soils and climate of Montecito. It normally will not grow to normal size/shape away from altitude and snow pack.

Avocado Tree Planting

2013-01-26 10:14 PM

Stay clear of buying fruit trees at Costco. Actually anything other than maybe bulbs. They never water their plants and they become very stressed inside in the dry air with little light. Do some leg work by checking out the trees (which will come in later this spring) and staff at the local independent nurseries suggested above. They will have the advice for your site and soil, as well as ongoing care advice for the life of your trees. Avos do get large and spread out, so not for small yards, except the "dwarf" ones. Do your homework and you'll be rewarded. Nothin beats a homegrown tomato except a Homegrown Avocado. The County Home and FArm Advisor's office has free booklets on all types of home gardening subjects. Call the office or go online to download PDF's.

Stace, it's remarkable to me too how "many people enjoy" Casa Dorinda now. I hadn't realized until reading your story that the original home formed the heart of what is now a thriving community. Quite a legacy she left us. So many citizens have done their part over the years to create the city we love, and perhaps in more towns than most a large proportion of our city leaders were women.

Suicidal Subject

2013-01-26 08:01 PM

843P, are you talking about the construction of the bridge or the suicide barrier? I assume you mean the barrier.

It's well established in the suicide prevention literature that media coverage of a particular method of suicide leads more suicidal people to adopt that method. A quick internet search will turn up hundreds of pages.

Contrast that with the behavior of the Glendon Association, our local "experts" in suicide prevention, who put out press releases every time someone jumped. Were they ignorant of the research in their own field, or were they cynically trying to increase the suicide rate from the bridge to push their barrier project forward?

I'm not sure what you're trying to claim "Did.Not.Happen", but there was a clear spike in suicides around the time the barrier was in the news, which peaked in 2008-2009 -- no suicides in 2006 and 2007, 4 in 2008, 7 in 2009, 1 in 2010, none in 2011, 1 in 2012.

Cover Your Cough!

2013-01-26 07:57 PM

Everything everywhere is tainted with viruses, today and everyday. Practice good sanitation yes, but keeping your immune system as strong as you can is always your best defense. Unfortunately people like coughing man are just a hazard, and I say try anything and then leave if necessary. I totally identify with 451. My store sells children's stuff, and we always get parents bringing their sick kids in to entertain them while they're bored at home because they can't go to preschool. Of course the school can have such a policy, but we can't. We sanitize the play table after they leave. What else to do? It's very tricky to ask a customer to leave. And besides kids spread germs anyway, even when they're not visibly sick.

After 31 years the vintage clothing...

2013-01-26 07:36 PM

761, 766, the reason it's hard to support a storefront is the rent. The best model would be storefront and online, but rent makes it unaffordable. Yes there's shoplifting and customer damage, but you get versions of that online, too. Going online changes your business a lot, especially in clothing, which people need to try on. Shipping becomes the giant thing in your life; online selling is all about the shipping and return policy. Instead of your landlord, now you get to to give your fees and your time to UPS, FedEx and eBay.
This economy has been barely holding on while people spend down their savings from the 1990's... it's almost run out, and you can see the signs. Meanwhile a lot of our property owners here are "investors" who can use the write-off, and/or prefer a high rent--even with no tenant--to a low rent, which reduces the paper value of the property.

Cruise Do's and Don'ts

2013-01-26 07:02 PM

ALWAYS, ALWAYS spend the extra money to get a window or at least a porthole stateroom. The inner staterooms are pitch black unless a light is on. You can lose conception of day and night.

Also, be prepared to be treated to the 'caste system'. The more you spend on a room, the better the treatment you'll recieve.
For instance, disembarking in port, the more expensive cabin occupants are always allowed off first, then the next, finally the lowest. (this can shorten your time in port)

One other little item. When in a foregn port, IF the food or drink is suspect, go back to the ship and hit the buffet. Always take bottled water.

Many of the amenities are available to everyone, but money talks!

the whole thing is just so sad. i too have read that simon had been out with friends and took a cab home, rather than drive. i too wonder what the cab driver has to add to this story. it is difficult to understand why simon would be walking on the 101 at that time of night/morning. the guy who was arrested - if he was in fact the driver of the car - should have stopped. no excuses for no doing so, even if you are drunk or afraid.

i suspect new cars have vin or other vehicle registration information encoded on parts like mirrors and other pieces that often fall off in accidents. if that's the case, law enforcement has an easy time of id'ing hit and run drivers. people - don't be dumb. if you hit a person or a car or an animal, STOP and take responsibility for your mistake or situation.

Why do you think school shootings happen so much more often now? It's for the same reason! Put things in the media enough times and they will find ways into peoples' subconsiences. "Glorify" these same things and you will see these people start to act on those small, planted, subconscious ideas.

It's a slippery slope. To deny that bringing attention to something will make people want to do it more when they might not have by themselves is naive.

The motorcyclist rear-ended a pickup truck and the bike and the rider were pretty messed up. A pedestrian had triggered the blinking lights---everyone stopped in all four lanes and the motorcyclist just plowed into the truck probably unable to see the blinking lights. I am not saying the pedestrian blinking lights are a bad thing just that it will take time for everyone to figure out that they are there.

It's not fireworks. 2 -10 round rifle clips sounds like. It's not uncommon for people to shoot at coyotes to scare or kill them, 1 or 2 shots. Never 20. It's very hard to catch them in or near Parma Park, which is why they think they can get away with it.

367783 - here's another bit of logic. If publicity caused 7 people to jump in 2009, why has not the publicity and the huge controversy of the bridge being built (every mention on EdHat or the Independent resulted in thousands of words, and there was even a person who walked across the bridge to much publicity) resulted in 7 deaths ----- from the start of the complaints of the bridge being built to its completion.

It's funny how people always advocate spending millions, billions or trillions of dollars on all kinds of things if it "even saves one life". News flash: We're out of money on both a state and national level. Time to stop spending millions to save one life and, instead, appropriate money wisely to benefit the greater majority of citizens. We can no longer spend money in excess just so we "feel good" and "save one life".

It's time to be realistic and be wise with our expenditures. We can't save every single person so quit wasting money trying to do the impossible just so you feel good inside. Waste your own money with private funding if you want to waste your time on junk like this barrier.

The State Department of Finance dec...

2013-01-26 03:10 PM

726: You're referring to current downtown businesses, not those that were appropriated by the city through inverse condemnation to build Paseo Nuevo? "The city also handed over about $2 million in housing cash it had at the time RDAs were dissolved." (Noozhawk) The purpose of RDA loans from the state was to eliminate blight and build affordable housing.
No, I'm not advocating for downtown businesses, most of which are outlets of large chains whose owners aren't Santa Barbara residents. RDA money was a loan, and the city's perennial overspending is destructive to residents of Santa Barbara as well as downtown businesses in terms of increasing the cost of living resulting from increased taxes and fees, deferred construction of low-income housing, and reductions in services provided to residents. Transient occupancy tax is an important source of city income, and the hotels/motels that generate this revenue don't rely on city parking lots.Income from DUI's an other arrests in the drunk zone generate income to the city, while local residents are burdened with the cost of law enforcement since city government includes a self-interest lobby for this class of business. I remember the flurry of announcements by Mayor Schneider of new capital projects to be funded by RDA immediately preceding the cancellation of RDA funding. SB's long-term violation of the federal Clean Water Act and the cost of the citizen's lawsuit filed against the city by Channelkeeper that resulted from deferring infrastructure maintenance is a good example of misplaced spending priorities by the city, with costs assessed on local residents, and could have been avoided through use of RDA funds. The city's spending is inappropriate for the current and projected economy, and the state's decision re city parking lots represents a form of co-dependency in support of unsustainable city spending. I'd much rather have a tax levied to subsidize the few remaining long-term privately owned downtown businesses than to pay the costs of the city's failure to comply with federal laws to protect the marine environment and those who use it.

778P, here's another fact:

2009 was the year of the big media blitz from Sheriff Brown and the Glendon Association advertising the Cold Spring Bridge as a "suicide hotspot." Research as show that the more a method of suicide is discussed in the media, the more common its use.

Before everyone starting talking about this bridge, the rate of suicide was about 1 per year -- just like it is now. So we're back to normal, except we have $3 million less to spend on other safety projects.

I bought Holiday (fruit ready in November) also known as XX3 because of the super large fruit. I bought two because I heard they need friend to pollinate them. One died and the other has never set fruit. I've been looking for a friend for it. Turns out two for the "same" don't pollinate very well.
You need a different type that blooms at the same time in order to get fruit. Unless you live in the vicinity where there are tons of avocado trees anyway. There are Type A and Type B, you need one of each and blooming the same time of year. Ask lots of questions about hardiness, when it blooms, what kind of mate it needs, how much space it will take up.
Check this out... www(dot)ucavo(dot)ucr(dot)edu/AvocadoVarieties/VarietyFrame(dot)html#Anchor-47857

Avocado Tree Planting

2013-01-26 01:28 PM

We bought ($300) one 3 yrs ago that was 3 yrs old already. It had one teeny avocado on it at the time. We deep water it (slow flow for several hours) once a month. We fertilize it in February and August using organic stuff from Sumida. This is the first year we have tons of avocados. It has doubled in size also during that time. Oh, it's a haas. Beautiful avocados this year. Way bigger than the ones at farmers market or the store and way yummier of course!

Seems like there's a story here every few months now.

8 comments and only one even close to the answer. Actually better than average for around here.

I'd recommend you wait until after the chance of frost and if you are a costco member, they are usually on sale in the spring for $16 (vs $25+ everywhere else) for haas. They can be tempermental, and are actually descended from jungle trees, so do some research. One thing I learned is that they don't like direct sun and can be burned for the first two years, so find a place with lower shade, that has sun exposure higher up. Again, frost will burn a new tree and set it back years of growth, so wait a few months until spring and give them some space to grow.

Thanks 710 for the reminder. I agree, it's a sad loss for SB. I always try to shop the locally owned places. Costco is a nightmare. A family of 2 (Mom and Dad) don't need Costco. The packaging is too big, so probably much of their perishables either get tossed in the trash or given away to their kids, friends, neighbors. And whenever I do happen to be in that place, I wonder what the hell would happen during even a moderate earthquake...all that stuff stacked to the rafters appears to be just sitting there, not strapped down or anything. And some of that stuff is huge - palates, furniture, cans...heavy stuff that would kill you if you and your oversized cart happened to be under it when it fell.

All the avocados grown in the trade are hybrids, mostly from Mexican or Guatemalan parentage, sometimes a mix of the two. They are indeed grafted onto root stock which will perform better than non grafted trees. Grafting is different than hybridization, speaking of biology and missing class. Hass is a good avo for around here but other varieties are more cold tolerant, depends where you live. Lots of info on the internet.

Avocado trees like lots of room. Also, they are shallow rooted so you should not have a path that crosses the root zone. They will require more frequent watering than stone fruit. They have few pests so spraying is not normally requited. The commercial nurseries in Santa Paula require you to walk through a special powder to sterilize your shoes. They are a rewarding tree.

Avocado Tree Planting

You won't get good avocados starting from a pit. Good trees are grafted onto a different rootstock. We have several great nurseries in town. I like Knapp's Nursery in Goleta. They're affordable, helpful and informative.

Avocados do not transplant well so you'll have to start with a juvenile tree and won't get much fruit for years. If you're not planning to move anytime soon, then good luck and be patient.

If you follow 717's advice, you should also learn how to graft on that root stock

The better thing to do is go to one of the local nurseries like Doug Knapp, Terra del Sol or La Sumida and ask about the trees they offer, how to plant etc.

They are pretty easy, but you do not want close to your home and they require watering.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 11:27 AM

I am a physician who's practice income is currently based 95% upon payments from insurance companies and Medicare. Also a good portion of my services are rendered, without compensation, to the uninsured. Also, I am currently paying $1300 per month via COBRA for insurance for me, my wife and child. Every single day I have to haggle with insurance companies to get them to agree to cover the services my patients paid to have covered. The insurance companies use every possible means and tactic to avoid utilization and payment. If they aren't simply denying coverage for care that is necessary and appropriate, they will use other means to discourage utilization. For example, requiring the doctor to go through a 30+ minute telephonic "preauthorization" process before a routine med prescription is approved (which in many cases is denied anyway without realistic opportunity for appeal). Or ridiculously high copays for certain services.

I am glad the ACA is coming. It will not solve many of the current problems, but it will make a difference for many, and it will be a start towards reigning in the abuses of the insurance industry. But, between now and the official "start" in 2014, we can expect to see lots of the kind of thing the OP described, which will put lots of people in that kind of bind. Yes, there is COBRA, but it's usually unfairly priced.

I believe a single-payer system would be the best, but it ain't gonna happen here in the US, with it's pro-business, lobbied-to-death legislatures. The best we can do is continue to demand more regulation of the insurance industry, via strengthening of the ACA.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 11:14 AM

695, your insurance was part of a group policy. The business subsidized your insurance. When you got laid off COBRA offered you the opportunity to purchase the same insurance as you had at your job but the business owner(s) were no longer subsidizing your insurance. Why is it so hard to understand? Now that Obamacare is kicking in and requiring insurance companies to cover everyone including the so called "womens health issues" and adults on their parents policy, the insurance carriers are naturally having to adjust their rates upwards. As a business owner something has to give. We either have to reduce the number of employees we cover or charge a non-competitive price for our products to cover the mandated insurance. If we charge a non-competitive price for our products we will not be able to stay in business. Then all of our employees will be unemployed.

From Wikipedia on California Proposition 13:

Effects on commercial property owners

Owners of commercial real estate benefited under the original rules of Proposition 13: if a corporation owning commercial property (such as a shopping mall) was sold or merged, but the property stayed technically deeded to the corporation, ownership of the property could effectively have changed without triggering Proposition 13's provisions.[4] Under current law, a change of control or ownership of a legal entity causes a reassessment of its real property as well as the real property of entities that it controls.[33]

Corporations often avoid reassessment by limiting portion of ownership by purchasing in groups where no single party owns more than 50%. For example: "In 2002 ... wine barons E&J Gallo purchased 1,765 acres of vineyards in Napa and Sonoma from Louis M. Martini. But the deal avoided a reassessment, because 12 Gallo family members individually obtained minority interests. " [34]

COBRA is a joke. when the company i was working for liquidated in 2007 i was offered the "opportunity" to continue the healthcare that i had been paying about $120/month for through my employer. the cost was around $1100, when i asked if that was quarterly or annual i was informed that would be the monthly rate! $1100 a month for health coverage! that was more than half of my monthly take home pay from the job i had just been laid off from. mind you i was 25 years old and a single man with no prior health conditions. fortunately i had just finished my major prerequisites at city college and transferred into UCSB full time that fall, gaining university coverage for my tenure. even now, with a decent paying full time job with benefits my health insurance has some scary gaps in coverage.

to 684 You are correct. An employer doesnt have to cover families/children, but the fact of the matter is many have and still do. It takes benefits/pay to keep good employees. Taking benefits away, hurts the business by potentially losing good employyees to other employers. Keeping the benefits in place hurts the businesses bottom line due to the extra costs of an additional possible 8 years of dependents on the plan. More importantly though is the fact that older people cost more and younger peole cost less to a business. Until this changes, nothing will change in this dynamic.

I don't get it, prices and rents can't go up forever again, they are already inflated. I understand economics but what scares me is property, residential or commercial prices rise due to a mix of greedy owners and or the reality that they have a inflated mortgage to pay. It can't keep going, it will pop just like before.

As the years go by the properties pull farther and farther away from feasible investments for normal people, until we sign up for loans we can't pay back and we are right back where we were not that long ago

The maximum hours for the front line staff (the people customers work with) was set at the corporate level (by fully insured & full time staff) for the company I worked for back in the 80-90's. (Different company long out of business due to foolish back office vps)

And it is because I am a good manager that the current business owners I work for can afford good health insurance (along with the other insurances) I would love to have employer supported health care as well. I do not. And that is the American Way.

Hi Everyone,

Mark Collier here. Thanks for the kind words! I've been the house magician at The Palace for 15 years. I used to do street shows (primarily juggling) with Jeff Walsh and we were called 'Circus Minimus'.

This is making me feel old. I mean, I used to be the magician at The Big Yellow House. The point is, I love this community and feel grateful and indebted to it for being able to get by doing what I love for the last very long time.

I'll be performing at the Hollywood Magic Castle March 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the WC Fields Bar.

Also, I'm helping promote the 'It's Magic!' show at the Lobero on Feb 17th. The shows are 2pm and 6:30pm. You can get 20% off the ticket price by using the promo code 'magic mark'.

Thanks again Ed Hatters!

623 & 654 both touch on a major problem. In some way, our tax code must make it more profitable to leave a commercial property vacant at $1.25/sq.ft. than lower the rent to $1/sq.ft. for a stable long term tenant. Local small business and our economy won't recover until this insanity is fixed. There are far too many empty spaces in this town, asking insanely high rents. I know, because we're a long term business looking for space (old space needed major repairs, and owner wanted to raise the rent & downsize the rented space). I could have been paying rent for the last 6 months, but the same spaces are still vacant, hoping for someone to pay them an unjustifiable high rent. When basic logic fails, the tax code has to be illogical.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 09:40 AM

Although I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment of 653, I agree that this country has a huge problem with the practice of combining health INSURANCE with health CARE. The terms have become one and the same- and yet the products are vastly different.

Health insurance should be like placing a bet with the insurance company that you will remain healthy. If not, they pay for your care.

Health care should be when you need to go and get a flu shot, or a medical exam, or get a broken bone splinted.

Why should these two things be tied together, any more than say auto insurance and auto mechanics?

Are we gone too far down the road with the "health care" industry to ever start again?

BTW I have been uninsured ever since I was laid off 3 yrs ago- to stay on my employer's plan would have cost me $600 a month which is most of what I was getting on unemployment. I am in my 40's and healthy (knock on wood).

623: Prop 13 applies to owner-occupied property, not income property. Local commercial real estate investment corporations pay property tax based on the property's most recent appraisal. Properties that are vacant, due to exorbitant rents and a dead local economy, are a deductible loss. It's nothing compared to what we'll see when we have a minimum $17 million/year drain on the economy resulting from Sheriff Brown's new prison, particularly since SB won't be competitive with the majority of the country in reducing costs through alternatives to incarceration that reduce crime.
I've also shopped at Yellowstone since it was in IV. Most of my good memories of Santa Barbara are related to businesses, etc, that exist only as memories.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 08:49 AM

The ACA is proving to be a disaster for everyone. They sold the public this albatross by mixing up health care and health insurance in the same discussion. Health insurance does not guarantee anything in terms of health care. Costs for health care will not come down until the profit is removed from the system and the players charge less for their services.

ACA is a ponzi scheme designed to take what's left of the middle class wealth and hand it over to insurance corps. I think every single person should cancel their insurance right now, and watch how fast the game changes. Let's get these criminals out of our health care system for good. What kind of people allow profit to be a major factor in health services? Sickos and cheap merchants willing to make a buck off your illness. A lot of bucks in fact all of your bucks if you get really ill.

Follow Dans advice and go to the SB Clinics, and put the huge premium bucks in the bank, not their bank, yours.

The reduction in hours to avoid paying insurance is nothing new. Decades ago I had to staff using only a couple of full time employees and the rest had to work no more than 18 hours a week so they would not be eligible for health benefits.

Asian Citrus Psyllids

2013-01-26 08:43 AM

A scientist at Texas A&M's Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center is moving a pair of bacteria-fighting proteins naturally occurring in spinach into citrus trees to fight a scourge commonly known as citrus greening. The disease hasn't faced this defense before and intensive greenhouse testing so far indicates the genetically enhanced trees are immune to its advances.

To hurry along the process, Mirkov and Southern Gardens Citrus, a subsidiary of U.S. Sugar that is funding his research, are pursuing government regulatory approvals while field testing continues.

Lawyers? Geez people, its a job not a right...

This is a result of the Affordable Care Act - AKA ObamaCare. The costs have increased greatly for companies and many are cutting down status of eligible employees to reduce their exposure (capitalism).

I'd say that you're lucky you had it at all at a part-time status. Find a new job (where's your insurance) or buy your own. I have to buy my own as do many, many people. But a lawyer? You'll get nothing but bills and headaches from an attorney in this type of case.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 08:20 AM

The fact of the matter is that this has been happening for a long time. It is just worse now with PPACA as the cost to employers has jumped significantly. Simply put, now an employer must continue to keep children to age 26. That is up to 8 additional years than was previously the case. That alone is a huge difference in cost. But the main reason for this article is the fact that older employees cost more and generally have families to be covered= cost more and younger employees cost less. It is not rocket science folks. I have no agenda that supports the left or the right. I'm a health insurance agent that has seen this for long time. 3.5 Billion in net profit( 1 carrier operating in 14 states) for a quarter? It certainly isn't the carriers who are getting the squeeze.

90 percent of the films in the film fest have nothing to do with Hollywood. Most are made by small time filmmakers, from foreign countries, often covering topics and issues that are little known and could use some more attention to reach lasting solutions for positive change. Don't let the celebrity nights overcome the vast majority of what this film fest is about: creative, smart, ambitious, and often young people putting their hearts and minds together to make important, relevant, and eye-opening pieces of art and journalism. Sometimes they are even funny or so sad they make you cry. Those who complain about the film fest seem to never go, which is feeble-minded at best, cowardly and dishonest at worst. A few closed streets for 200 films, lots of tax revenue, lots of increased sales downtown, and worldwide prestige? I'll take that any day.

State street rents are climbing back up. If they do come to your door, ask them to take you off of their territorial map. Do not get into a conversation with them either and tell them to peddle their pornography elsewhere. Also do not accept any literature. That will be a shoe-in for them.

JW's only take up 1% of the world population and are annoying as nat's flying around your face. They feed on the weak and they are destructive to your well being.

According to a New York Times article, they are the second least educated group in the nation. They do not promote education. They appear as nice people but if you think about it, must cults appear as friendly folks.

Insurance Woes

596 is correct; however, I doubt many will notice or accept the connection.
Employers cutting hours and changing status to avoid coverage expenses is a natural result stemming from the ACA (Obamacare)
I know this because my company recently had a closed door session to determine how to deal with the bankrupting costs associated with the new healthcare laws and that is exactly how we are dealing with it. The OP might even be an employee of ours.
There is no free lunch, folks, everything has a cost. You can't vote for free or subsidized stuff without it costing someone somewhere something. Nature's laws, not mine.

Gettysburg 150th Anniversary

2013-01-26 04:25 AM

Even if you're not interested in history.....you gotta go there. I was deeply moved emotionally at Gettysburg.... an eery, sad feeling. You feel the vibes, the aura of what happened in this historic land.....go to the quaint town of Fredrick, MD and visit the civil war medical museum, while you're at it.

After 31 years the vintage clothing...

2013-01-26 04:09 AM

I used to purchase all my dresses from the Isla Vista store back in the '70's....very inexpensive and adorable. I visited Yellowstone on State in the '90's and couldn't believe how expensive vintage became in the intervening years !!!

Jehovah Witnesses

2013-01-26 01:51 AM

In 1984, my husband and I were making an extensive tour of the Australian continent. We were in a fully equipped Toyota Landcruiser and covered as much territory, as slowly as we could, in the 11 months we were there. It was the trip of a lifetime.

While driving along the southwest coast, we ended up in a very lonely National Park area. We had come in "the back way," approaching from the east. In search of the ranger station, we drove six hours over the red dirt, corrugated road. Bump, bump, bump. The red ridges seemed to go on forever and ever.

Eventually, we found the gate to the ranger's house. On the gate there was a small sign. It read: "No Jehovah's Witnesses." I still laugh, every time I think of that sign.

After 31 years the vintage clothing...

2013-01-26 01:39 AM

31 years? I haven't shopped there since I was in my 20s. Too bad. I always thought I would take them some of my old happening clothing, to put on consignment. Never did it, though.

Insurance Woes

2013-01-26 01:28 AM

Right on Becky. For profit insurance companies have one agenda - make a profit for their shareholders. Nothing wrong with that for a for profit company. But - the way health insurance companies make a profit is to take in in premiums more than they pay out in benefits. Refusing to cover anyone who they think might need the insurance and to cover anything expensive is the way they do that. This country definitely needs a one payer health insurance program with everyone insured.

If you happen to be a gold fish, The Herons will be feared. I wish I had a few in the yard to keep the rodents in check.

Valley Club Membership

2013-01-26 12:48 AM

Being an old timer I recall the day I saw a sign on the reception desk of the Biltmore which read no Jews. Hope Ranch also had it right in their deeds . Times have changed. The Elks Club in Goleta I believe still has a rule where any one member can Black Ball you and I believe that survived a court fight. My brother said that segregation in the Navy was accomplished only after Naval Rules indicated that all members must and had to become integrated. The few blacks that forced integration in the south are very disappointed that it did not have the results they had expected. I go back to the Navy forcing integration in order to make it happen. Also many government officials forced integration so they would not be embarrassed by belonging to an organization which practiced segregation. You can be a segregationist and not be phobic. I think we should continue to debate the subject to arrive at a fair workable policy. Many of Hope Ranches members are Jewish today. One of them complained about a cross appearing every Christmas so the Board added two more 2X4's and made it a cross of David. Now hopefully everyone is happy. I like the attitude of the originator of this discussion. Why belong to any organization that doesn't like you.

Grief Book Recommendations

2013-01-26 12:02 AM

I lost several family members a few years ago and someone pointed me toward the Grief Recovery Workshop at El Montecito Presbyterian Church. It worked me through my more recent losses and also healed old grief I had not really moved through effectively either. They had some really insightful speakers and a wonderful group of women leading small groups that had experienced losses themselves. The small groups were relative to the type of loss - people who lost a spouse, people who lost a child, people who lost a sibling, or a friend, people with multiple losses... I worried that I would simply be overrun with the grief of the others, but every one of the eight Monday evenings were a new level of emotional catharsis that actually helped me walk more solidly through the rest of my week. They only have a session in the Fall, but if you call the church - 969-5041 - they can put you in touch with the women who lead it. They actually recommend that you attend a certain amount of time after the initial loss. And yes, there were people there with a variety of religious opinions and everyone was completely respectful. No arm twisting issues. Good luck.
