Tree Clean-Up

2013-01-24 11:57 PM

I can't trim my trees without a permit or a fine -- yet, a tree trimming company can leave their cut branches in a creekbed??? Why would it be the property owner's responsibility to tell the tree trimming co how to do their job. Surely Cleanup Service is not a separate fee. Do everyone a public service and let us know the name of the company.

Remembering Billy The Dog

2013-01-24 11:18 PM

I have had dogs bound up to me on multiple occasions - on the beach, urban trails, etc. The only thing I have ever done is stand as motionless as possible, and the dog(s) get bored. Many of the dogs probably weighed in at 90 lbs, and sometimes stood on their hind legs to paw.

Shooting the dog is an indication of complete lack of respect for something that can be highly annoying, and a lack of self control and patience. I would bet that the shooter has also had road rage at dumb drivers. As they say, do not sweat the small stuff. It is not worth it.

We have one but it is a bit of a PIA. It may be a older version, but it is impossible to sync the itunes despite calling the company for support. If a guest has a a iPhone or like device it just takes a lot of effort, they have to sign up get the app, etc. It is not good if you want spontaneous play of music by your friends We just end up using the Bose, but maybe we are old, not super techie and just want to dance. We use blue tooth a lot and it only works on WiFi. Sonos system for sale if anyone interested. The concept is good, but not for us.

One more thought. Re148. Do I smell some NIMBY? You should move to the Mesa where even the idea of one will be met with a lynch mob group led by the local realtors and nose in everyone's business neighorbors who will then draft a set of draconian rules to submit to local and state agencies. Sober homes are a mixed bad, you only hear about the ones that are a problem. At least when there is a bad egg they can be evicted immediately unlike other bad tenants that can take months to evict. If my big house ever gets empty, I am going to try house that is not a program home, but just people who want to live in a sober enviorment. It was that when I bought it and worked very well.

Another thought, and this is @048: according to Wikipedia, "The 2010 census population [of Santa Maria] was 100,062, putting it ahead of Santa Barbara (the county seat) for the first time and making it the largest city in the county. The estimated population of the area is 171,227, which includes Santa Maria, the city of Guadalupe and the unincorporated township of Orcutt."

When you say, "yet we have to bare [sic] the burden of being overrun by a gutten [sic] of social services, most for the down andouille [sic] from OTHER jurisdictions", it clearly demonstrates lack of understand of what a county comprises. We are all in this together. We in Santa Maria contribute to YOUR running. We are a bigger population base and our taxes contribute to the county services you deride. Unincorporated communities, such as Orcutt and Los Alamos, and others, see their tax dollars going to the county and NOT into their own coffers for city growth. They get a small percentage back.

I'm happy for those of you who can afford to live in Paradise, but don't fool yourselves, many of the gang and drug troubles are in YOUR community, too. There is no joy in that statement for me, by the way - I hate what society has become.

I live close to Oliver House on the mesa, court-ordered sober living for women with kids, and the only complaint I've heard of from closer neighbors was noise and some commotion in the past, from a lot of comings and goings, more than a family home, but I figure probably a lot less than a home rented to students. Moms and young kids probably have fewer problems than a houseful of men - there wouldn't be kids there if people weren't pretty stable. Whether court-ordered or voluntary, people in a residential communal living situation have made an effort to stay clean to get to that point. Institutions don't teach people to live as sober members of society & aren't a substitute. I've had problems with tenants who were hard-drinking former Delta Force, Rangers and Seals that could probably compete with a halfway house, but these guys didn't have a problem.

Neighborhood Sober Living Facility

2013-01-24 08:49 PM

I read EdHat regularly and chime in "sometimes", mostly not. It happens, right now, that I have a family member living in my home while she attempts to get into a Sober Living Facility that will take her AND her little girl, so they can grow healthy TOGETHER. Her case worker has talked about this wonderful place in Santa Barbara and is trying to get her in there.

We are in Santa Maria. It seems so far to us, but we want her well. Ironically, I just last night searched the place here on EdHat to see if anything bad popped up... instead I read a few praises and came away hoping she can get in there.

You see, unless it's someone YOU love, you don't get it. Sometimes bad choices are made... sometimes repeatedly. What I am seeing right now is a frightened, yet determined young lady just trying to break free from the addiction that has beaten her down.

I'm not going to get into the why's and wherefore's of how she got where she is... but it's sad that there are so many judgmental folks down there feeling so "above it all" that they don't want the OTHER TAXPAYERS IN THEIR COUNTY to succeed if it means they have to "look at them". Shame on you if the shoe fits.

I was going to "hide my handle" but have decided against that. I have nothing to hide - do you? Did you even pay for your subscription here? I did...

Remembering Billy The Dog

2013-01-24 07:19 PM

I have a feeling that this tragedy will be made into a movie in the future and/or Billy's owner will appear on Oprah/Letterman/Today Show. There was a movie made years ago about a dog who had rabies and a kid had to shoot the dog (or maybe his dad shot the kids dog). This story has struck a deep nerve, and anyone laughing at this situation should think twice about making light of this or any tragedy. Has any thought been given to memorial services or a gathering say at Ledbetter beach? Can we donate money to put up a sign along the trail or a bench where he was mercilessly gunned down by cowards? We lost a dog 17 year ago to a pack of coyotes. The memory of the murderous squeals, painful barking, and howling haunts my entire family to this day - we planted a small garden with a bench near the spot where sweet little Durazno met her fate. The worst part is that my husband had just taken her off the leash. That leash is still hanging next to our door as a reminder to our beloved dog.

I doubt the Creeks people will do anything for you. We have a perennial creek in our backyard that suddenly went dry this year for the very first time...in two days. We have steehead in it every year. I've contacted everyone I can think of because we are pretty sure the Ennisbrooke community upstream began illegally using their wells to water their lawns and dried up the water table which in turn dried up the flow into the creek. It is just horrible. All the steel head died and the critters that depend on this always ever flowing stream now have dry rocks. We had families of ducks, bobcats, raccoons, possum, birds of all varieties...now, NOTHING! HARD TO BELIEVE NO ONE WILL DO ANYTHING!

There is a march in Lompoc on Saturday in support of reasonable gun control. Granted these 'hunters' didn't use assault weapons, but they abused their rights as gun owners. Sorry but I think these gun wackos are just that. They are uneducated, insecure macho idiots. And what's with VAFB opening a gun store on base. Talk about hypocrisy. big signs at entrances. No guns allowed. And then they are selling guns in the store. As a tax payer, I object. And reasonable citizens should protest this.

The two hunters are from Brea, CA and they both had valid hunting licenses. The report doesn't indicate whether or not they had pig tags with them but are required to. To obtain a hunting license in California one must take a Hunter Safety Course and present a certificate of completion when applying for the license. Current cost of a resident hunting license is $44.85 and a resident wild pig tag costs an additional $21.34. We are in the process of researching many of the issues that have been raised above and will be reporting on them soon.

By the time they were 15 and confirmed, they had had enough. And never went to church again. One lay teacher talked about miracles and the highlight of their year was some quack coming in with a slide show of aborted babies. I was raised Catholic in the 50s and early 60s and had nothing but positive experiences from the priests and nuns. I did my duty and put all kids through a Catholic religious experience. But that was then; this is now. They are now well adjusted, accepting adults who don't need religion. And I am over it.

Of course that is illegal, and more important, very dangerous. People are exactly the right size for prey. These animals are predators. You should have even more respect for them than for a great white shark. Certain pods are known to prey on small, non-mammalian prey, but most groups are efficient and deadly large-prey carnivores. They are not people in whale suits.

Why protect a company that should know better, assuming they're licensed.

And if they're not, better yet to let people know who they are & that "you get what you pay for!"

I wonder if you tell your neighbour that s/he is contributing to the blocking of the channel flow and could lead to flooding s/he might take responsibility for it, especially if you let them know you're filing a report with the City/County/whoever. Maybe even inform the tree trimmer of the same so they could be held accountable as well for future flooding.

In Montana your dog is your lifeline a lot of the time and especially while hunting and to boot a 40 pound dog killed. Can you imagine if this (expletive) saw a 200lb wild boar charge him. Ask an alcoholic or addict's family member if these facilities are worth it. As a few have said there are certainly good facilities and bad. Just like there are good people and bad. Court-ordered or not, some people need the addtional structure provided by supervised sober facilities to complete their recovery. If it helps someone regain their health and become a productive member of society again, more power to them. One helped my son find his life again.

108 - To say that the blame lies solely on the victim is absurd. The blame lies solely on the shooter. The fact that he is was within the law makes no difference. The law is wrong and that will be eventually reflective in a new take on these types of assaults.

We as a society will not stand for morons with firearms to shoot what they please - this is 2013 not 1913. This is So. Cal not the middle of nowhere. And while you may think you're thinking is correct, its not. Not for So. Cal - maybe for AK or MT or a more rural area - but not for a populated and well travel area in So. Cal.

I will wager that this issue does not die and that there will be a policy shift as a result.

As for the hunters? They will be outed and the internet will take care of them in its own special way...

108 - "sanctioned civil authorities" did not place the blame on the owner - try re-reading what "very little information" was provided. The authorities simply did not charge the hunters with any violation of the law based on the facts at hand.

Sadly, the only one who knows what was going through the coward's head when he shot the dog was the coward himself. If he deemed a knee-high terrier to be a life threatening situation, then his lethal shot may have been justified.

@097 - there is a significant difference in a "kill for sport" vs a "kill for personal defense"

this falls into the later. Each case is determined on a case by case basis. Unfortunately in this situation, the dog owner was responsible for putting that animal in danger ( a situation the owner created for themselves )

The loss felt by the owner is probably tremendous but the blame lies solely on their hands ( based on the very little information provided ) and that was what was determined by sanctioned civil authorities.

Let's compare the film festival with Fiesta. Both are perceived as sure-fire ways to bring touri$t $$$ into the community. And they do.

But there the similarity ends. Fiesta is a giant party, thrown open to the entire community. The film festival is a tightly knit, elitist bunch of snobs whose events can only be attended by fanatically devoted film buffs and the very well-heeled.

I won't deny that the film festival has become well-known in the entertainment world. But don't for a second assume that the festival has any relevance at all to the community in general. Well, except for the restaurateurs and innkeepers who cater to them and make a lot of $$$ doing so.

Under the law dogs are considered the property of the owners. So the owner can sue the hunters for destruction of his property and be compensated for that. But cannot get anything for his pain and suffering, which most of us agree is a considerable amount. And I doubt that a mixed breed dog from a shelter is considered to be worth very much. I wish they considered them to be worth all of the food and vet care that has gone into maintaining them. That might make the hunters have to sell their guns to pay the settlement.

I am very curious to know, does someone with a gun in a National Forest have the right to shoot anything that moves except a human with no consequences? Or maybe a deer is protected due to the season requirements? If so, let's pass a law that the open season on dogs is now closed from 1/1 through 12/31 each year.

There is a good letter to the editor in today's Times that talks about how Mahoney and Curry seemed to take a flexible stance in dealing with the morality of the sexual assaults and what to do about them ("we weren't required by law to report it", "the statute of limitations has run out...."). This stance is very much in opposition to the firm moral rules that are enforced by the Catholic Church (priests can't marry, Catholics can't use contraception, can't vote for pro-lifers, etc) on many modern day issues. Very hypocritical.

If there is a god that judges us after our death, then those 2 guys will be in big trouble.

Coming straight towards the boat were dolpins. I screamed to my Father, "help" I'm going to run them over. He said just hold the wheel straight. They went under the boat and came up in front and rode with us on each side. They knew exactly what they were doing. They stayed for some time. Only thing I don't like about it is not being able to listen to the Lakers games. I was the person filming. We were in a safe vessel and killed the props upon sighting the small family pod. It was an amazing , once in a lifetime experience; one that endangered no one. We did not pursue the animals like our many whale watching boats do on a daily, seasonal basis. We interected; both families curious of the other. And contrary to the title no one actually touched the orcas. There is danger in life but adventure often brings danger and a life without adventure is not a life at all. I would not change our approach of the situation at all. Our young son has a lifetime memory and also has a healthy respect for our oceans and wildlife.

I don't begrudged people a place to get treatment--but I happen to know that some of it is " court-ordered" and the people don't really want to be there or have an interest in long term recovery.

Why is it okay to put this in a quiet neighborhood, with kids around?Shouldn't it be an extension of a hospital or clinic?

And there were always the creepy teachers and staff that had to pass out towels to the naked kids and to watch the kids shower. This happened in both the girls and the boys shower rooms. As I look back, I can't believe the systemic perversion and no one did anything to prevent it. And those teachers, they're sitting on their fat pensions now.

So, the Catholic church doesn't surprise me when our school system is just the same.

How is a sober living environment any different than a large family living next door? If you can accept that the kids will be kids, the teens will be teens and the parents will sometimes fight you can accept a safe living environment where folks with serious addiction problems are learning to live normal productive lives.

However there is a difference between a sober living environment and a half way house for convicts. The former is peaceful and healing while the latter can be a madhouse. You might find out which one fits the one coming near you and gain from that knowledge.

My emotions are mixed. I have come to the realization that most homeless have a family somewhere that have abandoned them for some reason or another. Then there are the ones who are truly ill and need our help. Years ago when I was on a task force, it was brought out that the homeless are made up of 1/3 truly sick people ,1/3 those who knowingly, are habituate and 1/3 those who truly are members of society who choose their life styles voluntarily. I am inclined to be no good at disciplining anyone. Tough love does help but then who is to administer it. I have a dog who is quickly teaching me how to behave and my daughter has one, governed by tough love that is truly a gem and behaves beautifully, understands every spoken word and tries to please. Time will tell which is right and which is wrong. For now I believe the problem with society is that many are waiting for love to kick in as the solution while others feel that tough love is the answer and there are few who know how to administer it.

Other people living in or around Santa Barbara were not so lucky..We had acouple serial rapists there too..I was a pretty bad drunk if I was your neighbor you would not want me to fall off the wagon but life is life and anything could happen..Have you looked on Meganslaw.gov website some of your neighbors might be on there.. It wouldn't bother me if there was a half Way house of anytkind in my HOOD As long as they didn't try to change the neighborhood. That is the only thing that would bother me,,,They would probably be wary of moving next to me though.

I've lived near two over the years. The first one was poorly run and the police were over there constantly - they ended up getting shut down. The second one was closely monitored - there was a counselor living there and everyone there had to adhere to a curfew. They are still there. It really depends on how the place is run. Keep in mind that quite a few sober living houses have non-voluntary residents (often the last part of their sentence). See what happens when they open. If there are problems, report them to law enforcement. Hope it works out for you and that they will just be good neighbors.

This story made me cry - Ian, I don't know you but I am so sorry for your loss. I'm not a hiker and I don't own any dogs but I love dogs. If you are walking your dog around Los Carneros Lake then you should put him on a leash but hiking in Oso? No way. You're not going to find your typical dog walkers in a place like that and I have never heard anything about loose dogs wandering around. It is just tragic and senseless. Ian, thank you for sharing your story. Ray Ford, every time I read a story of yours, I learn something.

I advise you (that is, the OP specifically) to assume that no such solicitations are legitimate, until or unless you become experienced enough with such issues that you recognize the sort of information that is needed (but which you did not provide) to distinguish legitimate from non-legitimate. Even then it's probably best to treat solicitors like mushrooms -- even the experts sometimes mistakenly eat the poison ones.

Wonderful experience, lucky you!

Statistics on Orca Attacks on humans (wikipedia):

Wild orcas are not considered a real threat to humans, as there are few documented cases of wild orcas attacking people, and NONE of the recorded attacks have been fatal. There have been about two dozen cases of orcas attacking humans since the 1970s, almost exclusively perpetrated by CAPTIVE animals. Experts are divided as to whether the injuries and deaths caused by captive killer whales have been accidents or deliberate attempts to cause harm.

Can't say that I blame the captive animals for being aggressive either. That is no way to have to live your life.

If I were hunting I'd definitely keep my firearm loaded. You do not know what you could run into out the the back country. If I didn't have my rifle loaded I'd definitely have a handgun holstered for a "just incase" measure.

Maybe the dog ran up to them and they panicked not knowing what it was. If they shot the dog from 100yrds away I get it; that shouldn't have happened. If you can't verify your target do t shoot it. If it had a tag and came up to you or even running at you most dogs aren't crazy to attack a person. Another dog yes, person no.

I read the article and have followed this. I feel bad for the dog owner loosing a friend. While I feel the dog should have been leashed regardless of what the "leash" rules are. Either that or leave your dogs at home. Keep them local to parks/streets where it's safer. There's a place to keep the off-leashed. It's called your front and back yards.

Had a chance to read the comments. The "gentleman" I referred to was NOT 60. He was in his 20's or 30's. I don't think race matters and he wasn't rude, which is why I used this term. I didn't get a website and googling anything "Youth Program Goleta or Isla Vista" pulls up no results. He would have accepted a check or cash.

820: I have had a parent and child come to my door to do fundraising for their school which the child was wearing attire for. I DO try to scrounge up a buck or two (don't carry cash) and give to those causes.

I offered to look in to it when I got paid and to "drop by" to see how I could help. He was polite and left after. But again, I noticed he was knocking on selected units in my complex (young adults/students) that I believe were only end units.

That Msgr. Curry and Cardinal Mahoney are still in their power positions speaks volumes about the Catholic Church management model, right up to the tippy top of the Vatican. They both should have resigned in shame and taken up work in a homeless shelter serving soup rather than hanging onto administrative jobs. Were it not for the statues of limitations, maybe they would be hanging out with Bernie Madoff in an ecumenical cell. But we have a devout Catholic friend who is in complete denial that abuse happened, or that these great men could be culpable of hiding such vile acts. "God is great"..."God's will be done."

However, if you do have a large library of tunes you purchased prior to '09, then Apple will let you pay 30 cents per song to unlock it. Basically, Apple will not allow third party hardware to stream the old protected AAC files.

This is how some people dance around the topic of race; it would have been perfectly fine for the OP to write " a black (or African-American) man, approximately 60 years of age," which is relevant when providing descriptive information. For some, this "sounds" funny/disapproving, or even racist. Hence, this man becomes a "gentleman" to soften the perceived problem. Maybe more "psycho-linguistics" than you wish to consider, but an interesting topic, I think.

Participating in the SBIFF does require a shift in the way we attend movies, but the benefits are huge. The web site could use an FAQ section to address issues raised here. One does get a sense of 'classism' when a whole line of people are rejected as a bunch of high rollers waltz past. But, I've often enjoyed the in-line discussions even though I've been turned away from my movie. Roger Durling is genuinely concerned about bringing our diverse community together. Roger and staff excel at assembling an amazing set of films each year. A few films are explored more deeply when actors and production people discuss the film after its showing. One just needs to jump in, get strategic to find the gems, or wait till the '3rd weekend' to view the most popular films for free. One suggestion: Roger should not conduct celebrity interviews. He misses opportunities to expose actors and his sycophantic comments obscure their virtues. Strange as it seems, Leonard Maldin does the best interviews.

Is this why so many speak out about violence against dogs while so few speak out against children entrusted to Catholic clergy?

I'm wondering because the glaring lack of outrage makes no sense to me. I knew people who experienced molestation by the local Catholic clergy and their lives were scarred forever. The innocent victims have my blessings for eternity.

It takes longer to do the work when you are keeping both existing lanes of traffic open in both directions. Also, the tax dollars paying for this accrue over time so the work is stretched out rather than take a big hit on other non-existing State funds. The hunters should be prosecuted. There were options. This use of deadly force is uncalled for and should be ilegal. This was someone's pet.

If the hunter's judgement is that poor before discharging his weapon, I don't want him around other humans or pets.
What's next? He istakes a horse back rider for a bear through the foiliage and he thinks it's coming towards him and he shoots without verifying the threat?

This dog was shot dead. This act should have consequences for the hunter who shot him.

Remembering Billy The Dog

There is a HUGE issue here, bigger than the leash matter. Billy's owner quoted the hunter using the term "wild dog," and the author cites it without any effort to define what if anything it means!!
What in the world is a wild dog!? Sure, lots of places have feral dogs, but feral dogs, truly feral dogs, run, flee, escape or HIDE. They do not attack, maim, maul, or hunt grown men. Being feral or wild means lacking in socialization towards humans. Feral dogs are like feral cats in that they spook immediately. Whether they weigh 4 pounds or 180, feralized animals want to keep their distance or get away.
Under the worst case scenario, a PACK of feral dogs may menace someone...but this is most likely only in an urban area where resources are scarce and territory established, not open wild public land. A feisty terrier certainly might run towards people on a trial, and he could have been barking or even lunging due to the surprise of encountering people on an isolated trail. But he was a medium sized terrier at a distance, and anyone who took the time to evaluate the situation would have at least yelled, "Call your dog" and then at worst, fired a warning shot. It frightens me such uneducated people had loaded guns on a recreational trail!
Billy was not wild, and I think the hunters knew it. They were guys with a trigger finger and no education or respect for the land or life. People can laud hunting culture and so-called American traditions, or they can focus on the lack of a leash, but the bottom line here is this was a completely unnecessary act of violence.
My heart breaks for the owner and that traumatizing long, bloody walk down the trail. I'm going to take a rose down to the beach this afternoon and throw the petals towards the waves in honor of Billy. Romp on in Heaven, Little Dude.

Poisoned Bobcat

2013-01-24 10:04 AM

@641, regarding use of shot - please make sure it is NOT lead shot - if you hit an animal and then are not able to recover the body, then the hawk, bobcat, or other predator who does get it is at high risk for lead poisoning. This is one of the major problems facing our condors - deer hunters using buckshot. I agree that regular .22 rounds travel a long ways, but maybe lower power loads? I haven't bought any in CA in a while, not sure how available they are here.

As far as poisons go, I do not use any form of poison - for gophers and ground squirrels, I use these handy sonic stakes - they run off batteries, and were incredibly effective. For insects (mainly ants), anything from cheap white chalk (just like we used in school) to peppermint oil. Anything else can usually be handled by changing storage or trash habits. No excuse at any time for use of poison - there are way too many alternatives.

I think the only thing I'd go for with door-to-door solicitations would be girls scouts selling cookies (TIS THE SEASON PEOPLE! Woo hoo!). Pretty much because you make out checks to the troop #, they girls are usually in uniform, and they carry the cookie sheet to get everyone's info. Alas, they aren't supposed to go door-to-door anymore, and we weren't supposed to as kids either (15 years ago - at least not without an adult). I don't see people being able to fake GS cookie selling too easily. Also, I tend to be ok with kids soliciting, but not adults (adults chaperoning kids, is obviously fine, and preferred). Once the kids get over a certain age, I start to wonder if they are casing the houses, exactly what I think about adults who do door-to-door. Can't trust people you don't know these days.

I love going to movies and rarely had a chance to do so when my kids were little due to time constraints. I remember the film festival was on and one of the films I wanted to see was going to be on within an hour, and my husband had time to watch the kids. I went to the movie theater and discovered the "you must buy a pass" situation which I felt, and still feel, is extremely unfair to someone like me (with very limited time). This gentleman came to our house too. He was a 60-ish African American, bald, eloquent and cheerful. He had a box of candy and stated the name of his organization, gave a website and said he was trying to raise money for uniforms. I politely turned him away because I can't imagine this is the best way to raise funds for a cause given all the scams that have taken place by people doing the exact same thing. Where's the accountability?

Rain Gutter Installation

Don't use Joel's.. They are by far the VERY worst company we have dealt with. We were at the tail end of a huge remodel and worked with dozens of subs and did not experience one problem until we made the mistake of choosing Joel's for our gutter install. Nick, who we originally met with for the estimate was a super nice guy... really liked him... But boy did we run into problems when Joel got involved. He is a "hack" and has no respect or regard for his clients. He damaged our newely finished exterior and wouldn't take any responsibility for it. Nick helped repair the hack job as best he could but still left us with hole in our brand new stucco. Joel is a hot head and the most unprofessional person I have ever dealth with.

Freeway Improvements

2013-01-24 09:08 AM

I was a junior in high school when the Northridge quake hit, and I remember how quickly construction crews jumped on the repair work which was estimated to take at least a year. They knocked it out well ahead of schedule and the contractors earned some huge bonus for being months ahead of schedule. Boggles my mind that they can't take care of this work before the next Summer Olympics. As someone else already pointed out, with so many people out of work these days (I understand they need skilled & experienced workers for much of this) you'd think they could scrounge up a few extra hands.

Don't get me started on adding a lane through Moneycito, I used to work with a woman who lives there, and we fought over adding a lane there all the time. The whole "we don't want to be LA" argument makes me want to beat the **** out of something.

The primary purpose of these improvements is for congestion reduction particularly in the areas that have been studied to have congestion routinely and even worse congestion during busy periods. Congestion reduction also qualifies as a safety purpose or objective because it reduces rearend collisions and swerving occuring when traffic unexpectedly slows or stops due to the congestion. Lastly it is for the safe entry or exiting of traffic entering and exiting the freeway at on and off ramp access points.

Question:

How was it that our transcontinental railroad was built through virgin territory, requiring track base, bridges and tunnels to be constructed, using crude tools by today's standards, and despite delays due to the civil war, built in less time than it takes to widen our existing freeway from 2 lanes to 3 from Santa Barbara to Ventura?

Hard to pick up a panga boat on radar in the channel. The variation in the ocean surface due to swells is just as big as the height of a panga. Plus they don't have a very big reflective surface. Even with all of the hi-tech equipment, I bet it is hard to catch all of them.

Legalize pot and then they won't have to smuggle it in. Have you ever seen a pothead be aggressive and cause trouble?

I don't know what we can do about the immigrants- they will continue to come as long as the economy in Mexico doesn't provide jobs.

Not a bobcat. Perhaps a feral cat. You can see the characteristics of a typicl bobcat in the earlier post, unfortunately one about a deceased bobcat. Although that bobcat was obviously undernourished and very skinny, (and apparently because of that famine) had fed on poisoned squirrel bait or possibly a poisoned squirrel, which ultimatey proved to be fatal. You can still see the classic features of a bobcat in the pictures provided.

There will be a third lane through Montecito. It hasn't gotten to that phase of the project yet. There's a more complicated bend in that area and structurally, it will be the last part of the area done for that reason.

@846.

Re ground squirrels. Their tunnel networks can seriously undermine slopes. If your lot is sloped, it can affect a house foundation, especially after heavy rain.

Animals that burrow and tunnel can cause horses and cows to become lame by tripping in the holes.

This does not justify poisoning, but they can be a serious nuisance.

We always just did the "La Conchita Crawl" through the drainage tunnels under the highway to the beach.

Yeah I'd like to see a count of how many more people - especially "families" are actually going to ride their bikes between Carp and Ventura. For a "family" to ride their bikes from a neighborhood area of Carp (let's start at Linden for a central point) to La Conchita is nearly 5 miles. And then they have to get back (and get up that hill) another 5 miles. The serious riders will do it just as they do now. But anyone with a family and a lick of sense would be riding on safer city streets to nicer beaches with accommodations suited for a family.

Another waste of money for a "feel good" project.

A third lane is added each way so you whining drivers can make the trip more quickly. Much safer non-freeway parking is added at La Conchita with an easy pedestrian underpass to the beach. No more climbing over K-rails and rocks. A seaside bike path separated from vehicle traffic completes the Pac Coast Trail bikepath between Carp and Ventura, and includes a stop in La Conchita. We'll see many more families enjoying a Sunday morning ride along the Rincon, and even more business and higher property values in La Conchita. Try not to h8 it so much.

The D.M.V. gives driver handbooks away for FREE! No one has posted an accurate description of the law involving pedestrians at cross walk or in crosswalks and there is a difference.

After you get your FREE copy, you should also read about where you can do legal U-turns, how fast you can go through blind intersections (Milpas & A.P.S. round-a-bouts are both blind intersections), how to proceed at a stop sign and what a stop is (hint, wheels need to stop turning).

There are no motor vehicle accidents but there are people who don't follow the RULES OF THE ROAD! And there are rules for PEDESTRIANS, too! Now if they'd just fine/incarcerate pedestrians for breaking the rules.

What I want to know is why this project is scheduled to take until 2016? Don't they have more than the 3 workers that are currently on the project available for this? I thought we had an unemployment problem in this state? Hire 100 workers and get it done THIS YEAR!

Scam or Legit?

2013-01-24 06:59 AM

Op, what kind of uniforms was he raising money for? I remember when i was younger my dad and I would go door to door trying to raise money for my YFL uniform. Kind of makes me sad to think when my son comes of age people these days won't even open doors to hear me out and will probably post something similar on edhat.

Scam or Legit?

2013-01-24 06:58 AM

Ribbit, that was my first thought--I don't get it when people refer to men as "gentlemen" or women as "ladies" unless the person really is a lady or gentleman. And, if a local school or music program wants donations, the usual route would be notices sent home from the school, or a notice in the paper or an ad in Edhat. Door to door solicitations are suspect these days.

Scam or Legit?

Why refer to all males as "gentleman"?

He is a man, and does not seem so far to have distinguished himself as particularly gentlemanly. "There is a man soliciting money..."

Jupiter and the Moon

2013-01-24 06:26 AM

Look up at the stars and planets and realize how insignificant we all are. Such a wondrous and fantastical feeling, to live at a time when we know so much about the night skies.

If my neighbor, who recently installed two "street lamp" size lights on her property, is reading this: Please remove 3/4 of those glaringly white bulbs! You're lighting up my backyard so that I can't see the stars anymore. Tuh.

OP: Lovely pic.

Plus elininating parking on the coast for a improved bike path. The only way to access the beach on that stretch will be to park at La Conchita, unless you are on a bike.

Kudos to the Dons Cheer Team

Thank you, EDDIEKD & 781P. Glad I'm not the only one who moonlights as a copyeditor.

Cheerleading is, by far, one of the most athletic and entertaining sports, ever, JULIAN. Haven't you noticed how super-fit and toned all those kids are? It's not the cheerleading of the old days. Cheerleading has become a fierce and cut-throat competitive sport.

Where the Wild Things Are

http://www.differencebetween.net/science/nature/difference-between-lynx-and-bobcat/

OP: Great, great pic. Love it. However:
There is no such thing as a "Lynx bobcat." As you will read, via above link, these cats are the same genus, but different species.

One lives in our area (bobcat) and the other (lynx) lives at higher elevations and hunts in the snow. They look different, and one is larger than the other.

@795: pot calling kettle, etcetera. snarkster.

Where the Wild Things Are

2013-01-24 01:26 AM

799p..795p here....You spoke quite eloquently where I was a bit vague. Of course only fools would take it to mean them breaking in armed or unarmed. While I would be fascinated by such a gorgeous animal, I wouldn't want the added worry of it being nearby and attacking myself or my animals. I would much rather have to go see them instead of them coming to see me. Now this will spark a snarky thread about us being in their habitat etc..... and how they are declining etc..... that is all well and good, but my observation was just that. An observation. Just a observation. Nothing more or less.
