Poisoned Bobcat

2013-01-23 11:37 PM

Roger, This poor girl managed to eat a little, while treated with Sub Q fluids, Vit K, Revolution, etc. We carefully monitered her every hour. Mechanical gopher traps, and Zappers are also life altering to our native wildlife. We have rescued so many foxes, bobcats, etc. dying from sepsis, from mechanical snap traps. Please be sure to set traps deep, to help spare apex wildlife from getting snapped, then trying to chew off a paw or limb. We have many more graphic photo's.

If you or someone you suspect is neglegent with the use of ANY rodenticide, PLEASE all our Agricultural Commissioners Office immediatly 805 681-5600.
Comment: EDDIEKD
wanted to add that one uplifting thing about this thread is that no one started arguing and bickering. We are thankfully united in our disgust and distress.
How about if we all aim to talk to FIVE friends, neighbors and family members, and ask them to share the information with five MORE people? I think this is how change happens. Yes, yes, yes!
----------------------------------------------------------------More info. to digest:

NATURAL RODENT DETERRENTS 1) Rodents and especially mice are allergic to oil of peppermint and will not frequent a property where they can smell
it. If you place a few drops of oil of peppermint on a piece of cotton and place it anywhere you feel that there is a
mouse problem, you will never see them again. Use only the “real” oil of peppermint, not peppermint extract, for the
best results. You can also plant peppermint in your garden to keep all types of rodents away from the plants. They are
also repelled by camphor and pine tar.
2) There are a few ground covers that rodents do not like to live in or be around. These are adjuga, carpet bugle, cape
weed, chamomile, Indian rock strawberry and creeping speed well.
3) Hire some barn owls to address your rodent problem by installing some nesting boxes. A family of 6 barn owls can
consume as many as 16 or more rats in one night.
4) Rodents will avoid certain plants that give off repulsive scents. These include daffodils, hyancinths and scillia.
5) Gopher purge (uphorbia lathyrus) is a plant that contains pods each containing three seeds. The plant is a natural
repellent to gophers and moles and all other burrowing animals. The roots are so poisonous to them as well as to
humans and it will eliminate the problem.
6) Keep all trash + food tightly contained, woodpiles and debri picked up, drainage pipes clean and fi ll the ends with
chicken wire to prevent rats from entering and setting up house, also remove bird feeders until the problem is under control. Natural Pest Control Internet Sites: Critter-repellent.com... [ more ]

Available only are platinum passes ($1655.) and mini-paks, $55/ 4 tickets and $125/10 tickets which may or may not get you seats in the front rows of the Metro Four for any of the popular primetime movies. (There should be no problem at the 8am shows.) There still are tickets for the special events - check at sbiff.org. Tomorrow's Indy should have the film schedule.

Durling has built upon the past and helped make it very successful ...especially for out of towners - and motel owners in the off season. Unless you're affluent, it really is not much fun anymore for locals. It's film Fiesta.

Where the Wild Things Are

2013-01-23 10:26 PM

95P, what would too close be? I don't think they kill people or break in and mess with the DVR.
But seriously, people should practice what's called "vexing" if they find wildlife getting too comfortable close to humans. One person's neat wildlife is another persons potential shooting target. A healthy distance is best for all. Vexing means you do things to keep the animal from thinking of humans as providers of food and you scare them away if they are lingering too close or becoming dependent on pet food, garbage, etc.

Traffic Collision Found Over 154

2013-01-23 08:36 PM

Wow. I'd encourage anyone feeling sorry for the guy to consider he could've easily gone head on with another car and killed multiple people but for timing.

The spot where he went off is an on-camber left where the passing lane briefly opens up to the right. Instead of going left, he just went straight. The down embankment is that there's basically a 15ft drainage ditch there, perfect size to fit a car on its side.

He called family members and asked them not to contact the fuzz? So that means he knew he was lit and wanted to be found, but not busted. If you are upset they didn't find him for so long, I'm going to send you on a scavenger hunt at night with minimal second hand details on location, and other dangers and distractions around and we'll see how you do.

Microdoc: it's not a question of right of rodents to exist. There are no coyotes, owls, hawks (or few) in urban Santa Barbara backyards. Rats proliferate there, beyond the capability of most cats, including feral cats. Most homeowners would prefer to feed the wild birds rather than the rats, would like to have tomatoes rather than feed the rats, would like to have backyard fruits, instead of feeding the rats who eat the oranges, tangerines and avocados.

I do not use poisons but I do understand why people do so. There are reportedly poisons that do not injure wildlife - or dogs/cats; I am hoping to find out if that's so.

The Gutter Co story, part 2. Took several days for about 30 feet of gutters. Continuous gutters have a big, ugly seam where they cut it too short. Screws exposed nearly everywhere. Slope is wrong, so water puddles in gutters for weeks after rains. Was on repair list for leaks in every joint for many months...finally their voicemail filled up and we couldn't even contact them, so had to caulk ourselves. Worst home improvement money we've ever spent.

Thank you for posting. Could you do us a favor, and also post a shorter version of the horrors of this chemical? I'd like to have it handy so when I see any gardener or pest control person putting down poison, I can hand it out. Sometimes, I get to talking to homeowners too, and they don't realize this. As printed, this is a little longer than I think people would read (but I am glad it's here). Something very to the point would be great to have.

We're talking about someone else's property that is being vandalized without their consent. I don't care if they paint a faithful reproduction of the Mona Lisa on it -- if the wall belongs to someone else, and it is done without permission, it's a crime and it's lame.

Maybe deter the taggers by making it so annoying and tiedious to get through the "punishment" (fines, classes, clean up, etc). Add more punishments (including making minors parents pay for clean up) for second offenses and so on. This is a problem everywhere and has been going on for a long long time. I agree that it's the festival atmosphere that makes the Film Fest so alluring. Gobs of out of towners visiting for the week and clustered in the same district makes for a fun social scene too. If you don't like people, especially strangers who don't even live here, the Film Fest is not for you..... REX, it's just not your scene, bud.

But if you like hobnobbing with film lovers from other locales and like seeing different and interesting people (strangers) milling about town it's a blast. The price of admission is well worth the extra curricular festivities. And a FourPak is good for you and a date for 2 movies you won't normally see otherwise. How fun is that!

If there's a film on the SBIFF schedule you really want to see, get a 4-punch mini-pack at the Arlington and try for the earliest showing in the festival. Good films get buzz, and therefore draw bigger crowds for the second showings. Sometimes more are added. Weekday early morning and mid-day are always easy - it's mostly prime-time/evenings and weekends that get really stuffed. For standby seating, show up an hour early to get a low Q-card number from the volunteer, then go get a coffee. People with gumption often sell or trade mini-pack cards with remaining punches they can't use in front of the Metro 4. Elitist, schmitist, this is still a chance to see films we'd never find otherwise. Always fun.

On top of that - the can be id'd after the fact by their tags and arrested - now they have to be caught in the act. The judge can rule on the individual but at least there will be recourse.

And, we can force them to join the military and make real men out of these young punks...

I can tell you, it's been effective in killing cats AND owls AND hawks......We have a pair of nesting owls and from their pellets left on my driveway they are far, far more responsible for killing birds. I've disected many of these pellets and have found mostly bird parts. The sweet Orioles, doves, etc, are being depleted. Agree - the film fest is not for the residents of SB - it is for the industry people and those that can pay $1500 for the all-access pass.

I too tried going for a few years. The only way I had a chance of getting in was to go to the off-hours screenings - anything after 10PM. They do cater to the insiders and the all-access pass holders because that is the way that it is. I would do the same thing in their position (make sure the stars want to come back and make sure the ones paying the $1500 will do that again next year.)

SBIFF organizers do try and make up for it to the locals by having the free screenings of the film fest's best the weekend (or two?) after the fest ... actually I think that is more for the volunteers, but they let anyone in for free.

I like the lines. In conversing with the over film goers I have found many more movies to see. It is a festival that you participate in with other people; it is not just a bunch of movies playing in the local theaters.

As for Netflix, of the films I didn't get to last year, one made it to NetFlix. For many of the films this will be your one chance to see them - sadly they're just too small market.

Log off, get up and go see a film with actual people. You'll be happier for it. Otherwise stay home, but why complain if it's not your cup of tea?

Oh, man I love the film festival! Sad to see negative comments. It is my impression that SBIFF tries hard to be inclusive, and in fact it makes sense that they would want higher, rather than lower, attendance. But there are practical limitations.

People can get a pass (there are different levels) that allows priority admittance; that is the advantage of having a pass. But there is no way to know ahead of time who will attend each film (there are multiple films at a time). So, first they allow people with passes to get in. It is only at that point that they know how many additional individual tickets to sell. So, people who buy one at a time have to wait, and there is a chance they might not get in.

My personal prior experience is that day time movies were often not full; evenings it depended on the movie. Many movies are shown more than once.

I am not close to being a VIP, and I've never met anyone on their staff, and I love the film festival.

Thanks, Julia, for posting this! Are there any poisons for rodents that are safe for (other) wildlife? Lenz has said that the modern varieties _are_ safe; I was skeptical; do you know if any are safe? (Parts of Santa Barbara city are overrun with rats, eating oranges, tangerines off the backyard trees and vegetables in the garden.)

Here, you are forced to shell out $55 minimum, wait in line for over an hour, and then, IF YOU ARE LUCKY, there will be a seat in the very first row or two for you to sit in.

Only speaking from what I've gathered and gleaned from my years on this planet, I don't think it's always a wish to die. I think it's a wish to escape a pain that most people never feel. The deceased may understand that the condition is temporary but the grief felt at the moment is so overwhelming that the person just wants it to just stop. I've tried to make some sense out of it, myself, when someone I knew decided to leave us forever. It's been some years since that happened but it feels like yesterday.

366614 I don't know if this applies to your observation, but a lot of times people litter food out the window while driving, saying things like, "It's biodegradable." In fact, it attracts wild animals to the roadway where they are killed. Hawks have probably noticed there are rodents and things attracted to the roadway for the same reason and then they get killed by cars just as well.

Lots of Prius' get impounded and towed every day - like any car. The number of repeat offenders for DUI in this area is actually staggering. Yes there are laws that take away their licenses and even their vehicles (get caught on a suspended license, lose the car for 30 days, 2nd offense - the car is forfeited to the state) but lames are still out there driving around because they don't want to stay home and get wasted. It is awful. The single, slight upside is that he didn't hurt anyone but himself.

We already have those laws in place that define who can own a gun.

You say, "For the sake of our pets, our children and ourselves use this tragedy as a catalyst to spur effective safeguards and controls."

On this trail, I was not aware of any humans being killed in this incident or past incidents. Have there been such tragedies? This was a sad event, but I do not see the need for new laws, but perhaps education for both hunters and pet owners.

Boar hunting is very often done with handguns, not rifles. Didn't know that, did you?

A likely scenario is he had the pistol in a holster on his belt, and drew it and shot the dog when it charged him as he lay on his back.

I have been out riding on that trail many times on my mule and it always frightens me to find men with shotguns coming around a corner. I ask them what they are looking to kill: "Whatever." Yikes! I'm dressed all in dark clothes on a big mule, so one would HOPE I am not mistaken for Bambi, but as for taking my Irish Wolfhounds out there, NEVER! I would HAVE to keep them on leash for fear one of the gun toters might is take them for a trophy coyote. And on the other side, many people come up the trail just as this man did, dogs way ahead out of sight, and the dogs begin to react to the mule without a human controlling them. I have to wait, and then politely ask that the dogs be leashed and pulled off the trail giving the equine right of way. In my experience many of the people who think it is appropriate to hike with dogs do NOT have the ability to control them with voice commands, and if they do not then they DO need to keep them on leash.

I like trees in general and think that the treeless streets around SB are less desirable than the tree-lined streets. The only complaint I have is the City's choice for some of the trees. Our African Lace Bark trees have large seed pods that dent the cars when they drop, and they have shallow/invasive roots (in 10 years, our sewer lateral has clogged three times, the sidewalk has been replaced twice and the curb/gutter has been replaced once and is already displaced a few inches and in need of replacement again). If something is going to drop on the roof of my car, I'd prefer it be fruit rather than ornamental seed pods.

I don't mind sweeping up tree litter. The trade off is beautiful, tree-lined streets. However to avoid the litter in the creeks, everyone would have be diligent and that is just never going to happen. As far as homeowners being responsible for sewer maintenance and repair due to damage caused by city-owned trees.... ludicrous. We too have had neighbors who were socked with an outrageous bill to tear up concrete to fix lines. We are paying for the ignorance of city planners from 50-70 years ago.

EXCELLENT POINTS! Our neighborhood is covered with tree litter 12 months a year due to non-native, city planted trees. Not only do they cause our creeks to clog with non-native tree litter, but as forementioned, the sewer pipes from homes are destroyed by CITY TREES, yet they insist the homeowners pay the full cost of sewer replacement lines... They will get an ear full from me! I fill one large green waste can a week with tree litter. What's interesting is that if you look at archived pictures of Santa Barbara, THERE WERE NO TREES except in the creeks with sycamores...!

How about that graffiti and obscenity-covered RV parked across from the Page Center? That thing has been there for months. I know at least 4 people have called it in, including Page Center staff, yet there it sits. Could be that it is on private property (though it appears to be parked in the bike lane), however I am quite sure it is the same RV that has moved around Noleta for the past year.

I am not a hunter, but have no issue with responsible hunting. I have had dogs and owned guns most of my life and over the years have had a number of encounters with aggressive charging dogs. I cannot imagine handling the situation as described in that manner. It would not be my initial reaction to shot the dog, nor would the others of my group when it was discussed. Many better ways of handling it. Many hunt pigs with dogs and that can get pretty chaotic, so you should be able to shoot a pig without shooting either your or someone else's dog. I am curious if they were actively tracking a pig or just walking around loaded. Most of the pigs are are taken on private land as they are few and far between in the public areas( but it is free) and unless there is fresh evidence it doesn't make good sense. More likely to shoot yourself or someone else if you stumble or fall down. I am also assuming they has their tags, but that was not mentioned. Really sad for Billy and his person.

Uh, I think the urban forest is part of the City's plan so I don't know if they can address County issues.

If I attend I will ask them how they address the impacts of trees planted on the City's easement- who is liable if their roots crack sewer lines, etc. My neighbor paid $7000 to fix sewer damage from a City tree that he's not allowed to touch to trim or manage in any way. And if they have a replacement plan for trees that are non-native like the sap-dripping bottle brush trees in my neighborhood.

For the film festival, they sell "mini-packs", for example I purchased a "4-pack" that can be used by 1 person for 4 movie entries, or 2 people for 2 movie entries, etc. These can be used for almost all of the films scheduled during the film fest (except for special film events, like opening, closing night...). An hour before each film, they pass out "Q Cards" at the theater for the specified film, that saves your space in line, and you can leave, and come back when they open the theater for viewing. It's a little convoluted, and I'm not sure if you can just show up and purchase a one-off ticket, or if they will make you buy a mini-pack when you show up anyways.

Probably the people that live in those neighborhoods are going to have to get a paint brush and start doing it themselves. Expecting "someone" from the City to do it is why the City has to hire more people and increase their budget. In my neighborhood if there is tagging I take my orange paint/marker removal solution and scrub it off. I only had to call them when someone sprayed the sidewalk and it needed to be sandblasted off.

I did SWAP (Sheriff's Work Alternative Program) at Eilings many many years ago and later learned from the SWAP supervisor at the park that it took more work to get the SWAPies to do the work and supervise them than do the work herself. But it kept people out of jail and that was significant cost savings to the county.

Again.... if you expect government to get by with less we get fewer services, regardless of what the politicians stumping for your vote say.

Pedestrian Sting

2013-01-23 09:43 AM

Ped vs. vehicle incidents are a problem and the sting well-intentioned, but once the operation is finished and drivers cited, has it made a real impact on how people drive and reduced the potential for future incidents? This should be the goal of the police force...

They need a paid ped. and multiple officers around to give tickets to a few people...it seems effective as a fundraiser, but not to enlighten drivers to the decisions they are making...many are in a hurry and not aware of the repercussions of bad decisions they make to save a few seconds.

Perhaps a better use of the officer's time is to find ways to stress the importance of pedestrian safety to drivers, whether it be through proposed improvements to the DMV handbook, additions to driver's training courses, or other avenues.

While the sting is going on, there may be a vehicle vs. ped incident somewhere else in town as a result of a driver who doesn't understand the risks they are taking.

The other night I walked by that property and the kids living there were practicing heavy metal music in the garage. The neighbors must have been so pleased. I live in the R-1 neighborhood on the other side of Mission and most of our problems have to do with parking and trash from the people that live in the apartments across Modoc that don't have parking spaces. If the planning department wants to get real, they should require 2 parking spaces for each bedroom because that is how these residences are being used. There are a couple of Pini properties on Mission near Gillespie and those are the ones that always have trash on the lot and next to the street. Isn't it great that Prop 13 exempts commercial properties like these from property tax increases? Who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?

So let me get this straight. We do have park staff and they are paid full time or part time. They are living someplace and unless they have bought a home, they are paying rent.

Meanwhile this unit sits empty. It would seem a no brainer that the County could find a qualified park person to stay here rent free or at a reduced rent.

My first rental was cheap because the landlady expected the tenants to take care of the property. Unless it was expensive (like roof repair) we took care of all the problems ourselves. It was a great deal.

if you let the gals roam your yard, try to do so when you are there as well. You can train them to return by tossing some greens or veggie waste into their coop.

If you can find a copy at a used bookstore, the 70's return-to-the-land bible, "Grow It!" is full of common sense chicken keeping, from egg to table. It advocates a "deep litter" husbandry in the coop, for zero smell, zero flying insects, etc which neighbors and you could find objectionable. It's a real gem.

The people at Island Seed & Feed are full of helpful advice and you can even get organic hen feeds there. Books, too.

Agree that grief groups help; by vocalizing your fears and anxieties you find they are common to us all. You feel much less isolated, and can get some good tips for coping and moving forward when you feel the time is right.

Friends can help by listening, too. You don't have to say much, just listen. Sometimes a griever needs to repeatedly vocalize. They are not looking for answers, just friendly companionship without judging.

SHOREBIRD - glad that your blindness was treatable!

My apologies if the sarcasm is a bit too thick, but as a cyclist myself, and a driver, and a pedestrian, I do stop for lights and stop signs (stop - not just slow down) and proceed when safe and legal, and I see plenty of cyclists doing the same, though I too am appalled by the number who do not stop when required, who ride on the wrong side of the road, ride weaving in and out of sidewalks driveways and parked cars, or ride at night without lights

I think a (slight) majority of cyclists in Goleta do stop, or at least slow down enough to put a toe on the ground, but the jerks certanly do tend to grab your attention more.

Maybe I was that cyclist who stopped. I don't always stop. But just about every time I do, someone waives me through. After I have unclicked my shoe and committed myself to the added physical exertion of regaining my cruising speed, I see no point in that, so we sometimes have a waving contest. I stop for my own safety, not to be polite. Perhaps the police will decide to crack down on bikes next. If 2 ton objects brushing by you at 50 mph won't convince you that you have to be very mindful of your own safety, neither will a $200 ticket.

Every plant has its uses. Sow Thistle fluff is collected by hummingbirds in my garden, for nests. I let several get big on purpose. They're easy to pull or lever out with a long handled spade ('lady's shovel') that I keep for working among my perennials. They are also subsoil pumpers, bringing up minerals from deep in subsoils. I cut off the bloom heads and lay the rest on the ground to decay.

Your shots of the GF's brings to mind the recent fabulous weekend in Morro Bay at the Winter Bird Festival. Did any Edhatters go? Great trips, classes and vendor fair. Shooter could have used the gun in a couple of different ways to run off the dog, pushed the dog away, fired in the air, shot at the dog's feet, the last thing should have been to shoot the dog to kill it. Why was the shooter's loaded while walking on the trail? There are so many things that didn't need to be the way they were which led to the death of a very sweet innocent dog. In the end of it all, loaded guns have one purpose, to kill or at the very least maim. When someone has a loaded gun there is 100% greater chance of an innocent victim being shot and killed than if there was no loaded gun.

The best feature one can use when really trying to expose a photograph correctly is a histogram. Of course, this isn't always possible. I prefer when doing any type of landscape scenes to shoot on a tripod using live mode with my histogram displayed. You really can't rely on LCD's screens as the brightness might not be accurate, etc.

Unfortunately for my two friends who are Nikon shooters (I'm Canon) they don't have the ability to use a histogram in live mode!

Very sorry to hear you lost a friend to cancer. It seems cruel when the best go well before their time, doesn't it? May the love he spread around him continue to warm your heart, always.

Mighty men with guns scared of a barking dog? It's the hunters who need to be leashed. Or lashed.

Two hunters, returning from a day o...

2013-01-23 07:13 AM

My heart goes out to the owner and his other dog who may be bewildered and traumatized having witnessed his packmate's dead body and wondering where his buddy is.

The anti-dog owner attitudes give me pause. My 95lb "police dog" scares the bejeebers out of many, even when on a leash; yet he is incredibly (too) friendly. Somehow dogs tap into our reptilian fear center despite their close association with humans. Now, some would turn them out after millennia of aiding our survival and prosperity.

When walking in the wildlands, what would incite more fear, a pig on the trail, two guys with guns,, or Billy barking.

Pet Chicken Workshops

We have 5 city birds and use a standard dog kennel with a tarped top as their coop. In 2 years we've had no problem. We also have dogs though. Inside the coop is their roosting box. Chickens are great, no rooster, little noise. All manner of small wildlife including rats like their food. You cannot be a cum-bi-ya progressivist about this kind of thing, stuff happens and you have to deal with it pragmatically. Be the farmer, and have fun. Life comes and goes on the farm.

Billy, The Dead Dog

The scariest part of this sad situation is having loaded guns on a hiking/riding trail. I doubt the guy loaded his rifle after the dog barked, it was more likely ready to go. RIP Billy

Two hunters, returning from a day o...

Everyone who is outraged over this tragedy should contact their elected representatives and stress the need to ban firearms on federal lands. Until some controls are put into place as to who can, and cannot, own firearms, we are all at the mercy of "hunters" coming down a trail with loaded weapons looking for something to shoot. For the sake of our pets, our children and ourselves use this tragedy as a catalyst to spur effective safeguards and controls.

Gun Shot

464 - Have you head of a newspaper obituary, which is a paid service and costs similar to a classified ad? An online tribute at websites that specialize in that? Facebook or blog tributes? It's pretty normal for loving family members or friends to share something about a departed soul. The process both for the person sharing and the reader is generally a positive one.

It also prompts others to appreciate not only the departed's life, but life and living in general. Showing interest to what happened to this person isn't a morbid curiosity, it's a compassionate interest. We are all brothers and sisters you know in the eyes of the The Universe (thats my opinion anyway).

Chickens noisy? I'd rather have 50 chickens next door to me, instead of the screaming, yowling brats that live next to me now. What a world we live in, where chickens and dogs are considered "noisy" and a "nuisance," and yet peoples' kids can holler and screech for hours on end----but you'd better not say anything! No equivalent of Animal Control to help, either. (And don't get me wrong; I am NOT talking about kids playing and having fun. I'm talking about kids ranting and raving like they were just let loose from the asylum.)

Plus, chickens give eggs. And dogs provide security. I rest my case.

Traffic Collision Found Over 154

2013-01-23 02:02 AM

An interesting read, this thread. All DUI drivers belong behind bars (har), from the first incident. More DUIs, then the length of time incarcerated should increase exponentially. I bet that would make people call a taxi or recruit a designated driver friend.

My question, however, is this: What the heck is a "descending embankment?" I know that musical notes/chords can descend (verb), but how does an embankment descend? It moves downward? As opposed to an "ascending embankment?"

Billy, The Dead Dog

2013-01-23 01:36 AM

Doesn't it make you wonder what else these "hunters" have been shooting? Since when did companion animals become targets?

There can be no argument made which supports the killing of Billy. Pig hunters coming down a trail with no dead pig meat in hand? They were trigger happy to shoot something, and poor defenseless dog was in their line of sight.

I don't believe for one milli-second that these two guys will ever feel bad about what they did. And they did it together---make no mistake. The one guy could have stopped his pal, if he wanted to.

And if the gun wasn't already loaded, even worse. That means this cretin made a conscious decision, took his time, and decided to kill someone's pet. Did he call out to the owner? Cowardly and disgusting.

Species of sow thistle weed. I yank that stuff out of my garden. (Please don't use pesticides, as such use harms birds.)

If anyone wants to attract Goldfinches to his/her yard: plant Cosmos. Then be sure and let the Cosmos go to seed. Goldfinches will flock to your yard. (It may take a year or two of growing Cosmos, just so you know.)

Thank you for sharing such phenomenal pics.
