I believe that is a private cottage that is next to The Miramar that once was owned by the actress Jane Russell. I lived there , or next door in a cottage owned by her, called "Doll Cottage" in 1979-1980...but that's another story!

642: It is apparently illegal to sell antique ivory in California. link. You might want to verify this by researching the actual law and beware of anyone advising you differently about sales. SBFUNLOVER: There have been many articles recently about the horrific slaughter of elephants. At the present rate, elephants will be extinct by the middle of the century; by 2020, large family groups of African elephants will be extinct. Asian elephants already are endangered from habitat loss and hunting. Brave rangers in Africa are fighting to protect the elephants from poachers and losing their lives to do so, all because of human greed for ivory.

It often can be better to go directly to the top, especially if, as here, you have gotten less than satisfactory results from the staff. Nancy Rapp is the Director of Parks & Rec.; there's a volunteer-staffed Park & Rec. Commission that meets on the 4th Wednesday at 4pm in the Council chambers in City Hall; those members are appointed by the city council. ... I hope that the city cares enough about its residents to respond helpfully to you.

We had a plaque made for my husband's mother and her brother. It's on a bench at Shoreline Park. Space was left on the plaque for spouses and children. When grandma died, I called to ask about adding her to the plaque (pretty sure it was Ms. Yamada... sounds familiar) and I was told that there were no provisions for modifying plaques..... and that "no" I could not remove it and modify/replace it myself...... My husband just died a few months ago, and I would love to be able to have his name on that plaque with his mom's....

OP here: In response to 511, no I wasn't surprised they rejected WTFRACK. And I'm not upset either. I do think it's really dumb, but dumb is what I expect from the DMV. Just think, it's someone's actual job (with all the California state employees' associated entitlements) to sit in an office in Sacramento and review these requests. I don't think they're going to take any chances on losing their cush job by letting something iffy slip by. Do I think WTFRACK is offensive? No. Do I think anyone would truly be offended seeing it on my license plate? No way, at least not any reasonable person. I think that in our present culture of political correctness, we have the sanctioned arbiters of what's acceptable and what's not using the sensibilities of the most thin-skinned among us to guide their pronouncements. BTW, I got the idea from an episode of "30 Rock" in which one of the characters was wearing a t-shirt that said, in large letters, "What the frack??". That was on prime-time network TV, but apparently is too saucy for people to see in real life. Oh well, WTF ?

I came down with the Asian flu in the late 50ies-chills, fever, instantly and every inch of my body in incredible pain. All I prayed for was a quick demise. Childbirth at its worst-- a piece of cake. I have had a flu shot every year since it has been available and so far never got the flu again. Too may people call any slight flu-like illness the flu and don't appreciate what the REAL flu can be like.

Get a handful of inexpensive engraved plastic plaques from a trophy shop and a tube of silicon caulk, clean the mounting and glue it on. When it looks bad in five years or so, use a putty knife to take off the old one and caulk on a new one. Repeat until no one's left to do it anymore.

OK, it is not on that scale every year from the flu - maybe thanks to some modern practices. Then there is polio, hepatitis, meningooccal, measles, mumps, pertussis -to name a few. Millions of lives saved, much disability prevented around the world, since the introduction of vaccines.

Flu Shots |

As a two-time cancer survivor, I got the flu shot and so did my husband. It's all well and good to miss the shot if are you are healthy and don't mind getting sick, but when you go out in public while you're still contagious (and most people do), you risk putting me in the hospital. It's not just about you, it's about protecting the young, the old and the immune compromised. It's a public health issue. The last person who gave me your reasoning now has her entire family of five down with it and has changed her tune.

547, I agree. But then I'm healthy and fit. I never get flu shots. Never. Then again, I'm not in a high risk group nor am I in contact with anyone who is. Yes, it's fine for the healthy to get sick. Probably healthier in the long run. But you don't know anything about the OP. They could be elderly, immune compromised or have children who are high risk for health reasons. Just because we don't get the shot doesn't mean it's safe for everyone to get sick.

"LAUNCH PARTY!!" With its Feb. 11 launch date approaching, National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA Landsat, will be attached to its payload adapter today at 30th Space Wing (Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.) My favorite NONpersonalized plate was on a car I saw years ago in San Francisco (where else?)--2BIG269. When personalized plates came out around 1970, a local guy named Bill Riordan asked for, and was issued, the license plate "PUSSY" for his Ford Pinto. He had it for several months before it was revoked by the DMV. Apparently, cops used to stop Riordan all the time, thinking he must have a counterfeit plate. I was amazed to see "UNCL FKA" on a car near San Diego a couple of years ago. And in another homage to "South Park," I saw a handicapped Virginia plate on the Internet, with the embossed wheelchair icon, bearing the letters "TIMMAY." A dude in LA had the personalized plate "9 INCH," which could have stood for anything, until you saw the surrounding license plate frame, which said "Try it, you'll like it." So few letter combinations, so much censorship...

My 10 year old daughter pulled me into Andersen's "to look at the pastries" last Friday, and we got our first sample of their Butterring. O M G The butterring filling is a mixture of custard and marzipan. I heart marzipan. We got a slice, 1/4 of the whole, because trying to consume any more than that in our 3-person family would be true gluttony. We usually go for the apple strudel, but we have tried several of their pastries over the years and have always been impressed. While there, we saw gorgeous eclairs in the case, with what looked like true off-white custard filling, not a bright white whipped cream. So I can't say for sure, but I'd expect them to be perfectly authentic and great. Andersen's is a gem.

Computer Programming Classes |

Some of the kids I know who became programmers did it by getting a part-time job (for free, usually) in a computer store or with a computer programming company. If your child is focused and disciplined (unusual for a 9 year old, but required in this case), the owner and employees will show him/her how to do some of their simpler tasks, supervise/ teach them, and encourage them on how to learn more on their own. Everyone wins, as they get motivated "free" labor -- it costs them time -- and your child gets to see what real programmers do. If your child produces more than s/he costs, the owners keep them around and allow them to continue to learn.

Long time Lompocian here! If you know which launchpad it's from you can strategize your viewing location. I think one of the better spots to view it (if you don't have base access) is to go to the lookout on Harris Grade. It gets crowded up there quickly sometimes. There's also another hill that requires a decent hike up a steep road. I can't recall the exact street, but it's near the landfill on the southwest tip of the city near where Bodger seeds used to be. If you can get base access there are viewing spots there. Enjoy!

36, it's not judgment, unless you consider information on international law aimed at protecting a species rapidly approaching extinction "judgment." I personally would not want to accept money for anything made of ivory. It's like fur coats; it perpetuates the idea of there being value, and therefore incentive, to collect and make high value goods out of animal parts. That being said, Chinese buyers and the African warlords doing the killing are the ones who are decimating the species now. It's unlikely that someone in America selling off antiques will make a ding in the larger global threat. However, it is probably banned by federal law.

I've been surf fishing for a number of years but never heard "sharpies" before. Wonder what that stands for? Anyway yes you'll see people fishing the surf all up and down between SB and LA. I'd say it's probably the fishing equivalent to surfing – calm, meditational and you're right very zen-like. Mostly you catch surf perch unless you specifically target some of the other species. Best way in the world to spend a couple of hours and take advantage of the amazing gift of the California coastline. Thanks for posting this. A great resource for more info is www.scsurffishing.com.

D8, dating the stamps won't help date the stamp if you follow my drift. The purple "first flight" stamp on the left wouldn't have been a national "issued stamp". It's a one-off made for a single event from a specific location. Hard to tell from the tiny image but it looks like the cancellation is a darker ink than then commemorative stamp. The postage stamps could have been years old at the time. I think I found a lead with a "first air mail" Santa Barbara google search. The flysba site speaks of Earle Ovington and the first service from SB/Goleta starting in 1936 but it isn't specific about the date. That would probably give enough of a start for someone who wants to put in the time to nail it down.

It may be illegal to sell your statues depending on the type of ivory. If it is elephant ivory, you may have to turn it in to the authorities. You can get a better idea by looking at the rules for selling ivory on eBay.

I am a vegetarian, and think the red guys look crazy (but no less appetizing that any other fish or meat). Also not sure why they are "unfortunate creatures", at least any more so than anything else you would eat. Kinda agree with 476 - at least they get to live a normal life until they are caught. Fishing is along the same lines as hunting - the game you bring home at least had a decent life prior!

385, that's not true. Atv (apple tv) does more than stream content from your computer, it is a standalone unit downloading content from the interwebs all on its own. It's limited in the idea that you can't " add apps" yet but give it time they will do that I bet. So most content comes from iTunes, Netflix, or Hulu I have a Mac mini for my " home theater " it works for me because I know what I want. But for someone not as tech savy ( or older ) its more complicated than they can handle. My suggestion, apple tv, roku, some sort of connected tv, or bluesy player. As this will polish an interface for you and make it easier to do what you want. But be warned, the content on the web is not always exactly what is out there over the airwaves. Shows can take up to 6 months to show up sometimes, and sometimes the next day.

In part to maintain its fantasy of "economic recovery" the government massively inflates the money supply; that money has to go somewhere, so much of it goes to the "real owners" (link to [03:15] George Carlin presentation is at bottom), i.e. the megabanks and corporations, and from there to the executives, who use much of it to buy stocks, fooling the non-elite into believing that the stock market doing OK or better, or at least not imploding, means something positive for them. All the non-elite gets is the "trickle-down" caused by the massive money supply increases — trickle-down inflation, that is, currently running between 9 and 11 percent annually, not the one percent the feds claim, if measured honestly as it was measured in the 1980s. Go onto the www.usps.com website and they have all the stamps issued, with pictures and dates. Butterfly Preserve |

Here's a morbid true fact: these butterflies often mate in-air, and you can feel especially lucky if you see a pair on a "nuptial flight" conjoined at the bits and flapping along in the air. BUT nature is cruel, look closely at the bodies you may find on the ground, and most are MALE monarchs, missing their hind parts. These sometimes break OFF when "flying united," possibly due to the weight of the mate. Presumably the female then hits the eject, and the males are left to flutter down and expire. You can tell the difference between the sexes easily: males have thinner veins and a "dot" in the middle vein on the bottom wing.

I have a good friend who purchased an Anatolian from a breeder in Santa Ynez thinking she was getting just a cute white puppy. Lest this article inspire anyone else to making the same mistake, I tell the cautionary tale. She would take him out running with her in the mornings, and as he got older he decided that the entire route was his territory. Then as he matured, he began to attack other dogs they encountered on the route. Why she thought it was appropriate to run a 120lb dog off leash, well, that's another issue. Eventually the poor confused fellow had to be "re-homed" to a ranch life, because he was hard-wired genetically to be far too "protective" for urban life.

All I can say is...look both ways before you turn to enter a one way street in downtown Santa Barbara. YES, there are many, many adept senior drivers in Santa Barbara. However, over the 30 plus years I have been driving in downtown Santa Barbara, the numerous drivers I have sucessfully avoided who were driving in the WRONG direction ON OUR CITY'S many one-way streets have appeared to me to be either tourists or senior drivers. Highway driving in our area is another story.Based on average speeds on Highway 101, you have less time to react to a wrong way driver. Scary!

If I truly thought most people were as heartless as the commentors, I think I might jump off a cliff too. This is a bad one and even though I am extremely careful about my hygiene and with whom I contact, I still got it...as did many others. As for the detractors. People will always assume they know more than experts - you can take their advice or you can trust the people who spend 10 years in school and years in the field. I didnt get a shot because I am pretty healthy and dont come into contact with a lot of people... next year I will be getting one for sure.

Renaud's is a distant second choice to Andersen's on State Street. Try Andersen's Butter Ring, Pumpkin Strip, or any of their other fine pastries. They are delicate, and flavorful, not rubbery like so many other bakeries. Andersen's are worth every calorie. Also - the hot chocolate is the best you'll ever taste. By the way, Andersen's is not affiliated with Anderson's Pea Soup.

I grew up and went to school in Greenwich at Roan School right across the road from the park. Spent every lunchtime in the park knocking conkers of the trees with sticks and broken branches, straddling the 0 degrees longtitude line outside the observatory and wandering the maritime museum goggling at the amazingly beautiful ship models housed in Neptunes Hall. Even perusing the corridors with Nelson's blood stained clothes takes from his body when he died. Our school had to attend the opening of the Cutty Sark and I remember the roars of laughter when the live announcer standing next to the queen erroneously announce that her Majesty the Queen would now unveil the "Sutty Cark". Keep seeing Greenwhich used in movies as a backdrop now. Gullibers Travels and now in Les Miserables. Great Times.

My guess is that the poster discovered the pharmacy didn't have anyone to administer the shots because not all pharmacists are qualified to do it, and everyone deserves a day off. It's not false advertising it they gave out 200 the day before. Can't necessarily expect service 24/7.

Assumptions put aside: How do you know the officier did not detain driver and make a report? Roger just reported the sirens had stopped so we all can assume the incident is under control. Period.

Goats & Their Protector |

I've had milk goats (lived in Montecito), they are wonderful animals and real characters. Such a great idea to have goats clear the land. Thanks, UHs, for the history of the guard dog breed, and for the pictures. This article shows that while we think we've made progress w/chain saws, weed whackers, etc, , going back to the old ways can prove best.

I heard that it is H3 strain this year and that H3 was not put in this years concoction when they made it up months ago. They still have to guess what strains to immunize against in order to have time to make that many doses.

Edhat bag is quite the traveler, he's so easy to carry along that no one should leave home without one. I have mine with me at all times, so useful for shopping! This shot really perks up the snowy background, thanks.

Thank you for the wonderful photos and lesson about surf fishing. I've seen these fishermen on the beach by our home for years (Tar Pits), now I'll watch more intently, with more appreciation.

Renaud's does not have the authentic chocolate eclair. I really wish they did. Their pastries are excellent, but, alas, not satisfying if you are looking for a true, traditional chocolate eclair.

The Med Centers (one on State Street, one on Fairview, maybe more). Last week when I called around, they were the only ones I reached who had any left. Some clinics say they have them on order and will get more in the near future.

I've never seen expensive booze out on the floor, anywhere. Why no anti-theft devices on them. The old man knew they'd be out and when.

Is that really a cigarette butt in the photo? It appears that other butterflies may have mated here before. Evidence: post-mating cigarette butt. I pick up a lot of cigarette butts on the beach. Questions to the Edhat community: when is it safe to pick up cigarette butts? Why don't smokers pick up their trash? Stay civil please. Great photos...thanks for sharing them with us.
