I thought he was inspirational. Hope the kids in the audience got his message that you have to work hard to reach your goals. That it is possible if you make a plan and strive for it. His story proves that with his examples. I was in the back and understood every word. He was personable and not too preachy.

SBCC Transportation Group On the Ri...

2014-10-25 03:20 PM

As a single mother and long time renter next to SBCC my rent has more than doubled in the past 15 years. A "yes" vote on this measure will be another reason for my property manager to increase my rent. Also, from what I have read, the proposed changes to the Wake and Schott Center will not benefit locals or people taking classes which they used to label "adult education." I do believe SBCC needs to do something about parking but I do not believe this measure will help.

I will vote NO on Measure S.

Historic Anapamu Stone Pines

2014-10-25 02:48 PM

Compare how green Chase Palm Park, equalling the across the street Fess Parker, with the unfortunate Anapamu pines and those Pino Palms on State between Mission and Constance.

There aren't bogs as there at the Fess Parker, but the grass is most certainly getting watered, probably several times a week. I notice it when I am walking my dog.

Too bad tourists are not directed to Anapamu as they are to Chase Palm Park. The Park Department then might be willing to do something. Although the advisory committees are toothless, I hope there will be some getting on that commission who are demanding.

Edhat's General Election Poll

2014-10-25 02:22 PM

869: You do have the right to have a small sign in your yard and I am sorry it was taken. That's trespassing and theft. That said, the oil companies have created visual blight throughout the county with their big double signs illegally placed in public easements. Plus all the smaller signs all along the easements. Caltrans cleared them all out up here in Lompoc as they were deemed illegal on their easements. The county roads people are refusing to remove them on county roads showing that department is as bad as those hired by the oil companies to put up illegal signs. I say if the oil companies can't and won't play by the rules for signs, they certainly won't play by the rules with their steam injection wells, acidization, and yes, possible future fracking. Yes on P.

The major difference in Santa Barbara between 1975 and now is the level of cleanliness. Why on earth is SB so much dirtier? We have so much more litter, garbage, and streets lined with dropped off couches, TVs, and "stuff." Why do we have so much more street art on walls, fences, and just about every public bathroom mirror and walls are etched or permantly marked with street art?

SB Uniqueness

2014-10-25 01:29 PM

Outstanding geography- only 2% of the world's coastline is in Mediterranean latitudes and faces south or north. In the US, this is it. Protected from harsh weather by islands and Pt Conception & mountains. Storms only come here from south Pacific or Gulf of Alaska. No matter the weather, it is always mild here, and 10degrees nicer than LA.
First zoning and architectural board of review in the country- assuring some consistency and scale in a town where there could have been a wall of high rise hotels at the beach. Cultural amenities that the size of the town doesn't support- but the wealthy people who come for the weather do.
There is nothing unique about the people bitching on this thread or what they are bitching about. Wish they could reply appropriately and we'd know what there is unique to complain about.

Edhat's General Election Poll

2014-10-25 01:25 PM

Can anyone from the No on P side please explain how the UCSB report can be correct in saying that for every barrel of oil produced in Santa Barbara County COSTS the oil company $118 per barrel when the market rate is $86?

By the way, that "cost" is termed economic benefit and does NOT include costs for materials purchased outside of the county, for example barrels, storage tanks, processing chemicals, all adding to the cost.

Most people I've talked with mention the loss in revenue to be the biggest reason for voting no. Those people are basing that decision on the UCSB economic report, and I just don't see how those numbers could be correct.

2014-10-25 12:15 PM

I am a firm supporter of SBCC as I have benefited from attending there and received my transfer AA to UCSB. They do have the best professors, teachers and advisers.

The parking was a nightmare until I realized the bus was so much easier. The city has increased the bus schedules so it is even easier now.

The out of state students pay max tuition, adds culture to the class and helps cover the cost of the locals low tuition.

Spreading the GED and language arts into the Adult ed system is smart since that is what most adult students study part time and parking is easier there.

I already voted Yes to SBCC by mail, and encourage others to do so too. Once facts are known how it does indeed benefit us locals.

Sorry, when you get behind the wheel of your own car and drive, then every decision you make is your own. If he had taken a wrong turn and driven into a creek, it would his fault and his fault alone.

Hearst Castle

2014-10-25 11:59 AM

Found this on Wiki:

One condition of the Hearst Corporation's donation of the estate was that the Hearst family would be allowed to use it when they wished. Patty Hearst, a granddaughter of William Randolph, related that as a child, she hid behind statues in the Neptune Pool while tours passed by. Although the main estate is now a museum, the Hearst family continues to use an older Victorian house on the property as a retreat — the original house built by George Hearst in the late 19th century. The house is screened from tourist routes by a dense grove of eucalyptus, to provide maximum privacy for the guests. In 2001, Patty Hearst hosted a Travel Channel show on the estate, and Amanda Hearst modeled for a fashion photo shoot at the estate for a Hearst Corporation magazine, Town and Country, in 2006.

Sears And K-Mart Closures?

2014-10-25 11:14 AM

I would like to correct the comment from 926. Sears does own the land and the building as does Macy's. These companies are not managed by the La Cumbre Plaza management company either. When the Plaza was upgraded a few years ago, you remember that Sears and Macy's did not upgrade their properties. It is true that the land under most of the shopping center is privately owned (or by heirs of the original owners) and they receive rent from the Plaza tenants.

No Target For Goleta

Please provide the name of the person on the Goleta CIty Council who is related to Sears Holdings, otherwise do not spread false rumors.

I doubt very much whether the negotiations between Target and the owners of the properties where they want to build, would ever be swayed by one person on the Goleta City Council.

Target was close to closing the deal, but chose to back off. Possibly they heard the Sears/Kmart rumors, and thought that Sears would be a better location and further away from KMart, should it become available. Who knows? I don't - mine is just conjecture of my own.

As a low income local of Goleta I have gone in and out of Kmart empty handed too many times. There are only a few decent things in that store and they are over priced. Rumor is that owners of Kmart are related to someone on the Goleta City Council and that is why Target continually hit so many roadblocks for so many years. If Sears closes I hope Target moves into that location because there is a need for the working class to have local access to affordable necessities and cute stuff that is currently lacking.

Some of these polite, cogent, and thoughtful comments make me appreciate that others take their voting responsibilities as seriously as I do. I read the proposals and submitted voter pamphlet statements, consider the issues myself, and vote as I think is best. To those of you who disrespect those who disagree with you, I'd encourage you to become a bit more mature, polite, and considerate. As 658P (& 686P & 857P & ...) points out, insulting others seldom persuades them. These are not easy 'no brainer' issues, and usually arguments can be intelligently made for either side. Thank you to those who attempted to do that, especially those who gave links to sources of additional information.

Half the companies didn't get back to me or show up for the appointments. Of the ones that did one estimator didn't even think it was worth his time to go up onto the roof, while another told me all about his plans to be fishing this week in an ecological preserve in Mexico, where he goes every year and pays a bribe to fish in a conservation area where fishing is prohibited. That really spoke to me about the honesty of his company. Of the 4 that actually gave me bids, one said I would have to get a "homeowner permit" and pretend he was family. Uh, no. It finally narrowed down to two, and I chose Craig Roof because I felt Paul Craig was the most credible guy. He seems to take a real pride as the owner of the company in seeing that each job is done right and I am going to trust him to do so. The home owner is truly at the mercy of the experts and the extras that are charged ABOVE the bid, the "Time and Materials" repairs that cannot be accessed until the old roof is torn off. The total price could easily double and so I had to pick the person I felt would be most honest. The roof replacement begins on my house next week, I hope it will be an easy process and I'll be snug if and when we do get rain.

And for those of you who may think I'm old and curmudgeonly, I'm in my mid 30's and have the misfortune of working in the downtown service industry on weekends. The kids are gross, loud and obnoxious. There is absolutely nothing they contribute by being falling down drunk.

I attended City College and so did my children. It is a great school and few deny that fact. But the millions and millions they have been trying to squeeze out of local property owners has gotten out of hand and their vague, unsubstantiated advertising campaigns trying to argue why they "need" these monies are so bad they are almost funny if it were not for the serious money involved. A NO vote on S is the only way to reel in this institution that is spending our money like it grows on trees for things bordering on the ridiculous and sublime!

Unfortunately 48 is for one specific casino being authorized 300 miles from here. It should be denied as well. Indian casinos have turned out to be the worst corrupting influence in California for decades. The have bribed and cajoled the legislators. They operate in secrecy, are tax exempt, above almost all the laws everyone else must abide by, are often used to launder drug profits and they cannot be sued for the violations of law, torts to injured patrons and workers, violations of Constitutional rights, breaches of contract, etc. The tiny tribes, mostly non-Indians and Hispanics, are making tens of millions of dollars mostly from people who cannot afford to lose it while real Indians are suffering in abject poverty on remote and real reservations and get NOTHING and these "tribes" still collect federal welfare and grant money from the U.S. taxpayers!!

Well usually parents try to have some control over what their kids eat. The kids shouldn't be calling the shots, the parents should. Raising your kid on junk food and processed garbage is sentencing them to sickness later in their life. Just because something is on a store shelf doesn't mean it ought to be eaten.

Many parents feed their kids 'political diets'. Meaning if Fox news says we shouldn't eat all that hippy food, then those parents will stuff hamburgers down their little fat kids mouths just to poke a stick at liberals. Later when their kid gets diabetes what do they have to say? Typically nothing but an excuse. How about teaching kids to eat well early on? A soda machine is not a diet. Rush Limbaugh is not a nutrition expert, just a drug addict.

I have an ornamental plum (you know, the kind with dark purple leaves, that don't set edible fruit) and it, too, is leafing out and has a few blossoms. I have no idea whether a fruit tree that does this is likely to produce, but I imagine it would depend on what sort of winter we have. A lot of wind, and rain coming down hard, and I think the tiny fruit would get broken off before it could ripen. But I am not an arborist...I am just looking outside at my plum trees to compare with yours per your request.

Some responses to various comments above...

During daytime hours, I can commute by bike from the far reaches of Carp or Goleta to SBCC, so "too far" is illogical. Plan ahead and get some exercise. A 20 mile bicycle round trip isn't that long. If the buses don't run during nighttime hours, either rearrange your classes or lobby with MTD to provide the necessary buses. Scooters also work quite well and are much easier to park if you need individual motorized transportation.

Community Colleges were to provide for the nearby Communities. Part of how the those communities are served is with ongoing adult education across a broad range of interests.

Support is a two-way street. When you break your contract with us to provide for our needs, and don't consider your impact on your community, we break our contract with you to continue to support your requests.

Another No on S who is fed up with cancerous growth of both SBCC and UCSB, and the negative impacts on our geographically limited community. Live within our local resources and infrastructure, because "more" isn't always possible or affordable - water, roads, residences...

Oped by Jack Friedlander in Noozhawk.

During the “Great Recession,” the state directed California community colleges to make personal enrichment noncredit classes the lowest priority in allocating their funds to support course enrollments. The state reminded community colleges that their primary mission is to offer credit and noncredit courses and programs to support transfer, certificate and degree completion, career technology education, and basic skills.

Moreover, during this time period, the state was imposing increased curricular restrictions on the types of noncredit classes that could be offered for state support. These included how the classes could be offered, the minimum number of hours the classes had to be offered, and the accreditation requirement to specify measurable student learning outcomes for noncredit classes and to document student attainment of the learning outcomes.

For the first time in six years, City College will not have to make budget cuts.

In a special Budget Forum, Vice President of Business Services Joe Sullivan, explained that not only will there be no cuts, but department budgets are also secure and will be allowed to make small increases, if necessary.

However, the college needs to increase enrollment to pay the State back for overestimating its enrollment throughout the recession.

City College receives $5,000 per full-time enrolled student . The cost for the college per full-time student is roughly $10,000. The College pays back the loan through the General Fund.

The General Fund is at roughly $88 million, which for the first time in six years is not under-budget.

Since the start of the recession in 2008, there has been a steady decrease in state funding for all California community colleges. This has resulted in many sections being cut and departments going without necessary enhancements.

084P - You really need to stop listening to Lori Gaskin. When a political appointee tells you that they can't do something because some other level of government won't let them, you need to ask whether they want to do that something in the first place. At the same time that we just didn't have any money for Adult Ed, we were expanding ESL and GED and City College has seen unprecedented growth since that time. California is now running a budget surplus, but do you see Lori Gaskin asking the state to fund Adult Ed? No. Adult Ed is gone because it was standing in the way of Lori Gaskins's plans to expand City College onto the Wake and Schott campuses. Campuses that were donated to community for the use of the adult education program.

Agree with -003 and -052 and REX on this one. I think the negative impacts of SBCC's growth are beginning to outweigh the positives.
Overall poor planning, obviously poor budgeting.
I am sorry, "local opportunity '" unfortunately has been compromised by soliciting and catering to a non-local student body.

Other funding sources need to be found to now support an institution that clearly serves more than our locals.

FYI - Some former classmates of my daughter's that graduated from our SB high schools are waiting weeks for an appointment to speak to their advisors. Getting guidance has been a challenge, getting classes has been a challenge, they all are now in their 3rd year at SBCC - a small example that perhaps bigger is not always better.

Is it true that "out of area" students pay more? I doubt that, but I do know for a fact that out of state and out of the country (international) students do pay a lot more, and that money from the out of state/country students stays in the SBCC bank. The money is not sent to Sacramento. As for how many students are from out of CA, check articles on students who come to play sports, such as a young man from Sweden playing football at SBCC! The football 81 man roster contains but 14 local students. Thirty seven players are from out of state, 7 from out of the US. Is SBCC still a community college or a branch of the UC system? Vote No on S and make the Board of Trustees think about their goals and then put something before the community which reflects what residents want in their community college to be. And, make the SBCC Foundation repay the $250,000+ they illegally took out to campaign for the passage of Measure S. Money donated to a 301 (c) cannot be used for campaigning for Measure S.

015 is correct. The build up of sand east of the wharf is to encourage Mission Creek to empty further east from the wharf; otherwise it is inclined to want to flow under the wharf and empty into the harbor entrance. The dredge pipe was already buried but it does serve to keep it that way.
This has been done for many years and is not new. Mission Creek finds its way around it, and if there is a big storm, it will wash most of it away and it will need to be replenished. Just google aerial images of Stearns Wharf and you will see the creek heading away from the wharf.
