Scam Letter

2016-08-28 01:47 PM

The OP is correct that the toll-free number in this letter is suspicious. Everything else in the letter looks legitimate - a very sophisticated effort! Now the OP should try to figure out if there are clues as to how his name and mailing address was selected. I will add that after my father passed away, my mother began receiving all kinds of mail and phone calls from suspicious senders. I think anytime new information becomes available in the public record (death records, property sales, etc.) there's a spike in phishing scams with the information - eventually they taper off.

I didn't have a good experience with Bob Castillo. He kept telling me over and over how honest he is. That to me is a red flag because it's like if he said it enough, I'd believe. But it was more than. He charged me $300 for a repair he said I needed. Okay. But then he said I needed more work that could possibly go up considerably. He mentioned my catalytic converter. He told me I could drive around town but I should save to get that work done. That wasn't true at all. One of my neighbors had a mechanic come out and look at my car for me. Turned out it was just a bad a spark plug. Cost me the price of a tune up. Maybe Bob just didn't know. I could give him that benefit of the doubt. But he does claim to have decades of experience. I'm not going to say he is or isn't dishonest. But you should take what I experience in as well as the other comments. Personally, i won't go to him again. I would have paid him $1000 for a $100 repair.

Views of the Venus-Jupiter Conjunct...

2016-08-28 12:00 PM

The Mesa has always been a good spot for star gazing. Back in the 1870s, the best telescope in SoCal was on the Mesa. A guy named S.R. Weldon who lived on the Mesa (near present-day Weldon Road) had a six-inch telescope, and held telescope parties where visitors viewed the very same Venus-Jupiter conjunction that we are seeing now. A reporter for the SB Weekly Press (8-15-1874) wrote about it in flowery Victorian language: "Last evening was an especial occasion of interest on the Mesa, and the attendance at Mr. Weldon's observatory parlor was unusually large. It has been apparent to the naked eye for some time, that a high bit of flirtation has been going on up in the firmament. Jupiter and Venus have been making up to each other in the most unmistakable manner." -- Betsy J. Green, author of MESApedia

As I and my dog were finishing our Goleta Bike Path walk, I saw a woman coming toward us at around 7:30PM. She was heading toward the path and it was getting very dark out.

I told her about seeing the Sheriffs and about the circling helicopter and advised she take care. She told me the neighborhood was very safe. But she did turn around and retrace her steps.

I am glad now that I said something. You never know. That perp stalking the mother and child could have been after the woman and not the young child. If you're going to walk in lonely or semi-lonely areas, carry pepper spray in hand, ready to use. Pepper spray only costs around $10 (or less) on Amazon.

When I was in my late teens, there were two books that addressed this problem. "Future Shock" was the book everyone was reading. "Dr. Rat" was a not-so-well-known book. The reading of both was extremely enlightening.

Too many people = more crime, more aberrant behavior, more suicides, more gender confusion, more war, more disease, etc.

Rey Fire Area Closed to Public

2016-08-28 09:29 AM

Record visitor numbers at the nation's first national park have transformed its annual summer rush into a sometimes dangerous frenzy, with selfie-taking tourists routinely breaking park rules and getting too close to Yellowstone's storied elk herds, grizzly bears, wolves and bison.

Law enforcement records obtained by The Associated Press suggest such problems are on the rise at the park, offering a stark illustration of the pressures facing some of America's most treasured lands as the National Park Service marks its 100th anniversary.

From Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains to the Grand Canyon of Arizona, major parks are grappling with illegal camping, vandalism, theft of resources, wildlife harassment and other visitor misbehavior, according to the records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

In July alone, law enforcement rangers handled more than 11,000 incidents at the 10 most visited national parks.

In Yellowstone, rangers are recording more wildlife violations, more people treading on sensitive thermal areas and more camping in off-limit areas. The rule-breaking puts visitors in harm's way and can damage resources and displace wildlife, officials said.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/visitor-misbehavior-abounds-us-parks-agency-turns-100-140956497.html

Just an example of what rangers have to deal with; people putting self-interest above safety.

It could be a meeting place for small professional symposia that would rely on shuttles from beach area motels/hotels. Public parking of significant size will have to rely on shuttles like at the Getty. Ms. Lodge has great judgement and could be a positive influence.

Tiny Lizards

2016-08-28 06:40 AM

Well, I'll defend cats: The so-called 'house cat' has been domesticated for at least 3,000 years, and no environmental catastrophe can be blamed on the species Felis catus. (At least none that I'm aware of, but maybe someone can gin one up.)

There's a whole army of small animals other than cats that will eat those baby lizards like potato chips, but I suspect the vast majority will be eaten by birds, because that's what birds do.

When my daughter was 10, "blue bellies" & alligator lizards were her whole world (she's earning her biology degree up at Monterey state) - we had a "secret" spot on the Santa Ynez river that was "blue-bellie Heaven" - some of the biggest, fattest lizards we'd ever seen were everywhere out there.
