222 is providing misinformation. A quick google search says age of consent is 16 in Hawaii. In Idaho it is 18 unless the girl is at least 16 and the male is less than 3 yrs older.

The human brain is not fully formed to assess risk until sometime in the 20s. If we were a caring society, we would delay drinking, sex, and military service until then. Because we need young people to fight stupid wars, we let them have sex and fight wars at 18. But not drink.

It's like Monty Python made the rules.

113: Yes, but he met this girl and gained her trust through his position of being a teacher.

The fact that a sexual predator CHOSE a profession that put him into close contact with minors is what makes him dangerous. Without this conviction, he could easily choose to go back into a profession that puts him in contact with minors. That's why we have laws and enforce them.

Anyone who makes excuses for this scumbag needs to take a long hard look in the mirror, and then stay the hell away from minors.

While I understand that 18 makes a person "legal" it would still be inappropriate for a teacher, a person in a place of authority and trust to prey on a teenager.

Even if they were not a teacher, but say a neighbor, it is completely irresponsible. You have a man 20 years her senior taking advantage of her immaturity. I don't care how crafty or worldly she thinks she is. I don't care if she sent him lewd, naked photos. He as the adult, with years of experience, should have not encouraged or engaged in sexual acts of any kind with a teenage girl.

Hopefully he doesn't have a spouse or children hurt by his actions as well.

I looked into when doing a move and decided that it wasn't worth it. By the time all the costs were added up it did not end up saving that much money over a more traditional move. 2014-11-25 11:09 AM

And the "blame the victim" crowd comes out with their lame excuses, as always. You really have to wonder about people who are so EAGER to excuse sexual predators.

It's not about how close to 18 she may or may not have been, whether she was "crafty", or what people do anywhere else in the world. It's about a man who chose to be a TEACHER, a job that put him in close contact with minors, and then chose to break the law and abuse his position of power and authority to have sex with a person who is legally unable to consent.

Considering that as a teacher he was a mandatory reporter, and that he was in Law School when he was busy having sex with this minor, there is absolutely no reason to believe that he was somehow unaware that any sexual contact with a minor is both illegal and abusive, and indicates that he truly is a predator who should not work with or be around minors at all.

I exit there almost daily and I don't find the panhandlers a hazard. There's only ever one at a time, and he usually sits down when the light turns green. Cops clean out campsites at this time of year because they're getting people into shelters and finding the remnants of guys who have moved on or died. And like Roger said I'm sure they leave some camps alone because the guys in them are staying invisible and not making trouble, so why bother? I find it utterly impossible to begrudge anyone a try at getting some sleep or shelter in the frickin cut by the freeway. There but for the grace of G-d…

And then it gives a link to PODS! It seems the only PODS alternative for a move from SB to San Diego is U-Haul's U-Boxes & for a variety of reasons those would not be a good choice for us. To us PODS doesn't seem too pricey (we found an online 10% off coupon, so that helps) compared to hiring a moving company, but if anyone knows of a more economical alternative please feel free to share. The issue of a CC spending a lot of money for their sports is tough. The one thing that you have to remember is that there are a lot of student-athletes that cannot get into a four-year school either academically or athletically, and the goal of these students is to do two years at SBCC then transfer to a four-year school after they have proven themselves BOTH academically and athletically.

There are many pro football players that started their college at a two-year junior college.

Octopus at the Tide Pools

2014-11-25 09:47 AM

153, some people like to eat animals from the sea and harvest them legally. Do you know the lobsters were undersized? (The legal limit is 3.25" from between the eyes to the start of the tail.) Lobster diving is fun and it is challenging to catch them.

There are lots of other tasty things to be had as well (scallops, crabs, fish, etc.). It's a dang sight better to hand harvest only what you plan to eat than to go buy your seafood from a store that is supplied by massive fishing fleets that indiscriminately kill whatever they happen to catch. Similarly it's far more sound to hunt your own deer than to buy a steak that came from a poorly treated cow on a factory farm.

Some people like to eat meat and just don't want to know about the dirty work that goes on to supply it to them.

With all of the bad press about pit terriers, the negative comments here are understandable. But the ones offered at the local shelters have passed stringent assessment tests and it is very rare to have an adopted pit come back for poor behavior.

The volunteers that work at the shelters are the ones most familiar with the dogs and the ones I know are comfortable with having the dogs at their houses as fosters.

If they're not going to adopt them, I wish people would stop breeding them.

It is often overlooked that the football program is the best Public Relations mechanism many colleges have. This is particularly true locally since UCSB was forced to discontinue football, which was their best PR community outreach program for years.
For the tennis buff commenting in this thread, we can all sympathize, but it is difficult to compare the popularity of the football program with that of the tennis program or many other sports niches. If you have ever taken the measure of attendance at a UCSB woman's Lacrosse game you can understand this concept.

Do they finish 2 years at SBCC? Oh and the cost of men's tennis for a year is $30,000. What's the cost of men's football? And tennis did not have a million dollar press box built to announce games that are sparsely attended. All SBCC Sports should have the same standards applied to determine whether those programs should continue to be funded.

If 113 facts are true then that changes the story. Some of those young ladies can be very crafty! Even though he's twice her age and he ought to have known better, times have changed and Ozzie and Harriet are no longer at the helm.

Bizarre behavior like this is often the result of untreated mental illness. It can be agonizing to live with. Where in all of these comments is the compassionate response?

Stabbing in Old Town Goleta Under I...

2014-11-25 07:25 AM

116 Have you ever saw something that was a little weird but made no sense to you at the time, then you heard a news story and you put two and two together and it turns out you actually saw a crime in progress? I'm thinking the SBSO is asking just in case there is anybody out there that saw something that may have looked like nothing at the time but they filed it away in their memory bank for future reference. There is no harm in asking and if there is someone out there that can help solve a crime why not?

SBCC Airborne

2014-11-25 07:21 AM

And SBCC needs a football team for what???? This 2 year school needs 81+ guys running around like a hole in the head. And, as I recall, most of these players aren't local SB county kids. Back to the drawing board that City College should be about academics, not spending time and money trying to be a university. Cut this sport and get these guys back in the classroom.

Water Wise Citizen Spotlight

2014-11-25 07:15 AM

I wonder about next year when the 1,000 new units just for UCSB, plus all the other building permits that have been issued start using water--where does that leave all of us who have cut back the 10-20% and use less than the number of gallons allowed for a small house. Next year, if we have to cut another 20%, we will be bathing in the sea. So many people, including our family, leave buckets in the shower, pitchers in the sinks to catch water while showering or cleaning veggies for a meal and then go outside to pour the water on our bushes to "recycle" our allotment. The mentality of all elected and staff for the elected seem to disregard the need to stop issuing permits for more people. This is going to result in stealing water but from where as the wells are drying up. From what I am hearing, there is a lot of frustration from the little guy doing his/her part, yet the powers that be keep issuing more water meters. Please, wake up and put a stop to this growth and save the little bit of water for those already living here.

PODS Experience

2014-11-25 07:12 AM

I used PODS to move here from out of state. It worked great and was cost efficient. My advice is to pack well. A lot of furniture was damaged due to the constant rubbing and vibrations from the long drive. That was completely my fault and could have been avoided if I packed things better. I kept the POD in storage for a year and when I needed it I just gave them a call and they delivered it. I unloaded it over the next couple days and they picked it up. It was great.

Teacher Sentenced for Sex with Stud...

113, I bet your opinion would be different if you had an underage daughter having sex with this guy. If he's not smart enough to wait 2 mos til she was 18, he's not smart enough to be with anyone's daughter.

Montecito Bank and Trust Donates $1...

Really a good man. He just donated to the Santa Barbara Choral Society, (thank you Mr. Towbes!) I am also a very happy Montecito B+T customer, who had used a variety of different banks, unhappily, before MB+T. The Towbes have been a real force for good in our community.

Octopus at the Tide Pools

2014-11-25 01:54 AM

Thank you for not revealing the location. The last time I saw an octopus at a local beach it was dead white (dead), hanging from some 20-something guy's belt. It made me sick to my stomach.

I called Fish & Game and they said there was nothing wrong with harvesting sea creatures from the tide pools and something about a permit or maybe not. It was obvious there was nothing to be done.

A few days later it was Thanksgiving, and I saw two guys (also younger men) outfitted like Cousteau expedition divers, gloves and booties, head-to-toe neoprene, snorkels and prying tools. They had powerful waterproof flashlights and were going after gawd-knows-what hapless creatures in the tide pools. These guys had net bags 1/2 full, lobsters and such.

Again, nothing to be done about it. If I could have got their license plate # off their vehicle, I would have reported them, as I'm sure those lobsters must have been under-sized. Not to mention the havoc those two were wreaking on the intertidal ecosystem.

Both experiences were revolting to the extreme. Poor tide pool animals, not at all safe from pillaging, merciless humans.
