Ocean front property for sale in Arizona. Dirt cheap! Dont believe everything you hear. Numbers are the easiest thing to manipulate when trying to advance your agenda. Pay attention and do your own research, from multiple sources, before you come to a conclusion. And even then question that what you think you know is correct. Especially when this government is the one providing the info. And even if this is true they signed up less than 2% of the population of SB County.

For those actually interested in the facts, the water use issues for the Long Range Development Plan are stated in the Goleta Water District Comment to the LRDP EIR and that is posted on the GWD website. If they build all the development the Regents have already approved, it will use a tremendous amount of water, and take the GWD to the edge of a long term water shortage, again, something the community vowed to never allow to happen again after the last Goleta water shortage lasted 25 years, 1972-1997.

Health Care Open Enrollment Exceeds...

2014-04-23 11:23 AM

I am glad the public sector was active in this process. I heard a presentation from a private sector insurance salesperson and he had very strong biases against ACA. He said he was only going to do one application per day as it took up too much of his time. Yes, he was going to be paid for enrollments but he definitely was not going to go out of his way to help people. I couldn't help think if this was the attitude of private insurance brokers, no wonder people were frustrated at the beginning of enrollment time. And this guy was one of the few in the area who spoke Spanish and had a large Spanish speaking clientele. Yes, the computer system was initially weak but it seemed that those in the private insurance business that wanted 'Obamacare' to fail were perhaps somewhat to blame for early slow enrollments.

Roger Reports Traffic Hazards

2014-04-23 11:15 AM

167P, road accidents without autos? What, were the deer being killed by the roman chariots?

As Spock would say, it seems illogical to say that speed is not a factor in wildlife deaths. If you agree that wildlife deaths would decrease if we all went 5 mph in our cars, then there must be some faster speed that would result in more deaths. Every animal death I've heard of lately ( the bear on 154, deer on 101) has been associated with a car going at least 65 mph.

Students have a relatively low water use as they don't live in houses with lawns. Assuming a use of 50 gal per day, that is about 20,000 gal per year, if they even live here all year long. Tens of thousands of gallons of water is an embellishment.

Traffic Accident

2014-04-23 10:58 AM

I am surprised those busses aren't involved in more accidents. They always seem to feel that they can throw their weight around and disregard the flow of traffic when merging back after making a stop. Many times have I been cut off by a bus, with nobody behind me in my lane, by an MTD bus. Many unsafe drivers. I understand that because of their size, it is more difficult to drive in city traffic, especially when most other drivers are unaware or the difficulty of driving a large vehicle. However that does not excuse the complete disregard of the rules of the road.

134P - Maybe you should do a little bit a research before you go posting links. The howstuffworks webpage you referenced mentioned a company, Toxco, that plans to opened a lithium ion battery recycling plant. Toxco recieved a $9.5 million Department of Energy grant five years ago to finance a recycling plant, however they admit that there's no current profitable business model for recycling lithium ion.

"It's not economically feasible to recycle the lithium..." said Tony Eshun, a U.S.-based spokesman for Umicore. Given the cost of processing, "lithium has a negative value."

There are secondary life uses for lithium-ion batteries, including storage for off-peak renewable energy. But sadly, the lithium itself cannot be recovered and reused at a profit. Hopefully it can be done in the future.

Roger Reports Traffic Hazards

2014-04-23 09:16 AM

To answer your question 998, it is just luck. Btw, hawks, small birds and rodents are animals too. Our human civilization and infrastructure are devastating to many forms of wildlife, but we are also beneficial to other forms of wildlife (rodents, pigeons, insects, bacteria, etc.). However we are large-brained and we can, and have, figured out many solutions that benefit wildlife and our ecosystems. Road accidents will always be a sticky problem, partly due to speeds we travel (and no, maintaining the speed limit does not make you less of a danger to wildlife) and partly to the nature of road travel. There were road accidents involving wildlife long before there were autos.

Complaining about sanitation at a roadside rest area… huh? Those places are just fine compared to many public restrooms. I'm proud of our state's good rest stops. These two have nice landscaping and are in cool sites, though tricky to navigate due to the rocky terrain.

No, I would not want an "attendant" hovering outside the stall waiting for my "tip," which I'm supposed to pay on top of the taxes I already pay to support public rest areas. That sounds super safe and secure to me!

Pushing this off onto Buellton shop owners is not a great option for the shop owners or the travelers. I hope this postponement means they will keep them open through the heavy summer travel season.

The trouble with googling for facts is that people read the first sentence of a random howstuffworks article and assume they are conversant in a given subject.

Lithium is a naturally occurring metal that must be extracted from the ground. And with the increase in use by electric vehicle manufacturers, don't you think there is a possibility that this resource will also be exploited excessively and perhaps irresponsibly?

Moderation is a concept that we as humans can't seem to grasp.

It will break down the immune system, damage brain cells, kidneys liver and other organs. There's nothing more pathetic than a person shaking, trembling and babbling with the D.T's. It's not cleve to be drunk as a skunk, kids.

A large percent of these youths will soon discover starting the day with a clear head is more desirable than a hangover. However sophisticated they feel at the beginning of a binge with their peers, they will tire of the results.

There is also a local yahoo group SBATA@yahoogroups.com that is a wealth of information.
Hope that helps.

Roger, one word: Netflix. $8.00/mo. Alll you need is TV or computer to watch, and internet connection, both of which you already have. Cable not necessary anymore unless you want sports. Totally worth it, endless movies and full seasons of TV shows from US, Great Britain and most of Europe.

The Palm Trashed on the Clock

136P. Yes. The toilet tube and the single-use plastic bag are recyclable. Plus I think I spy a few other cardboardy items that need to go in the blue recycling bin.

Dear John: Please help your pal sort his/her waste into the proper bins. Happy Earth Day.

Dolphin Fountain at Stearns Wharf h...

For a pond to lose ½” – 3/4” of water per day under certain extreme conditions is not terribly uncommon and probably no cause for alarm. The amount of water evaporating will depend on several factors including; cloud-cover, shade over the pond, humidity, wind, and the specifics of the waterfall or fountain. The longer a stream the more water is exposed to the air greatly increasing evaporation.

Water features can also lose water to splash out of waterfalls or fountains. This could be due to windy conditions or simply design flaws in the feature itself. Plants also will absorb some water. Another possibility short of a leak is losing water to wicking. This can occur if a plant, roots, mulch, pond underlayment or other material hangs into the pond and allows water to slowly wick out.

Next thing needed is to put those plastic placards/hangers on each shower in every hotel. The ones that read "Keep Showers Short. Conserve Our Water."
