And a few neighborhoods are quieter and have less parking on the streets. Gee whiz. Maybe they are turning back into true residential neighborhoods, where kids can ride their bikes and people can relax in peace and quiet in their backyards. Thank you, SBCCouncil, for getting rid of VRBOs and illegal Air B&Bs in our residentially zoned areas. Maybe the TOT for neighborhood short term rentals is down but legally zoned hotels/motels are doing oK. And housing prices will go up (and have....)since all these violations are being addressed.

It's basically an elephant trail - there's plenty of hiker traffic to keep things clear. As 694 says, at the riverbed, you just gotta head across & downstream until you pick the trail back up on the other side. Right now the river will be flowing so you'll be fording. It's a really nice walk, and it will be deserted back there right now, since there is currently no vehicle access on the Romero/Pendola/whatever it's called road.

This will change once a cruise ship tourist is hurt or killed and the cruise ships stop coming. After the loss of all of that revenue, they will finally do something.

Have they started pressure washing the sidewalks again? I guess they stopped during the drought but they really need to start that up. Getting rid of the benches also sounds like a good plan.

Enforcing the licensing laws on the dogs would also help.

Double Surf Rider

2017-04-24 03:23 PM

surfing is such a fun thing to do, but you can't do it with 1000 other people trying to have fun also. You used to be able to get a few waves at Rincon if you went early enough but now the parking lot fills up before dawn and everybody knows the swell is coming thanks to computers and buoys and wave alerts. Plus the fact that it is easy to get in and out there encourages a lot of different levels to surf there.

This is why the people at the Ranch protect their breaks so vigorously.

Isla Vista Park Special Election

2017-04-24 01:52 PM

The most interesting thing here is that "eligible" is mentioned 4 times, but the term is never actually defined. Why not?

A google turned up a Daily Nexus article that indirectly answered the eligibility question:

A bond has been paid off & property IV property owners will see a reduction in their property tax for the 2016 - 2017 fiscal year, this is an "undeserved windfall", so the "special tax" will equal the prospective reduction.

“They carefully crafted this,” said Joan Hartmann..." "She suggested that because the tax rates are so similar, “this new tax is just a continuation of what people were already paying.”

The city of IV doesn't really need the money, but the apparatchiks see any reduction in your tax burden, as a waste of THEIR money. I was under the impression that only property owners were eligible to vote in raising property taxes...

Two Earthquakes Hit Santa Barbara

2017-04-24 01:46 PM

428- When the big one hits the landslides and tsunamis will take out 101 in multiple places. The hoards of "invaders" of which you speak will not fare well on foot, especially with aftershocks. It will also likely devastate most of SoCal, ripping from Imperial County to Parkfield in 30 seconds. Santa Barbara will be very isolated for a long time, as there are only three roads, all of which are very prone to landslide closure. That said; one to two MONTHS food and water is in order. Do not count on "Daddy" (FEMA, County, Red Cross, et al) to save you. Take responsability for your own well being. We buried a 300gal water tank in the back yard and while it is only changed annually, boiling and other disinfecting means make it totally viable. Realistically, if your neighbors have not prepared, there is not much you can do to help them in this kind of scenario. All you can do is be completely silent about your own preparations and have a strategy to conceal them.

It is becoming increasingly clear that marine mammals are sentinels of potentially dangerous environmental changes in the ocean environment. Sick and stranded marine mammals warn us of changing ocean conditions in El Niño years, and poisoned marine mammals have protected human health by demonstrating the need for the screening of shellfish and other seafood for fatal biotoxins. The Center’s Veterinary Science program, under the direction of Dr. Frances Gulland, Senior Scientist at The Marine Mammal Center, lays the foundation for a deeper understanding of human behaviors that may affect marine mammal survival for the long term.

$940k Wildlife Grant to La Casa de ...

2017-04-24 10:27 AM

WOW, in a town that regularly suffers from drought (and still IS ! ) not a single positive comment about how this money will go towards making a "catchment" system for not only rain water but to reuse/recycle existing water for the garden ..... and to divert water to the creek where it can filter naturally. Millions of gallons of water saved, and they will show others how they can do this in their areas as well. These are all good things that we need badly in order to insure that our children and grandchildren have water.

THIS IS A "GOOD" USE OF GRANT MONEY ! :-)

Flicka--I think the guy who went after the Mission had bought a house on Plaza Rubio--and then wanted the bells muted. Dumb SOB......It is a shame that people cannot be more considerate with their neighbors....I lived in Mission Canyon for years with a neighbor next door who lived with a bunch of cats....they kept coming to our house--finally had to call County Animal Control.......

$940k Wildlife Grant to La Casa de ...

2017-04-24 10:08 AM

La Casa Del Maria is owned by the Immaculate Heart Community. They split from the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Catholic Church almost fifty years ago! In the property settlement, the Home that Katy Perry wanted to buy was retained by the Sisiters of the Immaculate Heart and the Church. Nice try 550, but you are incorrect about everything except the room rates which are actually very reasonable when you realize that they include meals and lodging in an amazing Montecito golden era mansion.

(p.s. i'm not saying all non profits are bad...it's just that most of them are a joke)

Child Bitten by Seal

2017-04-24 09:53 AM

from Marine Mammal Center website: part 1 of 2
In 1998, The Marine Mammal Center diagnosed the first case of domoic acid toxicosis in marine mammals, and has conducted extensive studies of the condition since then.
Domoic acid is produced by algae and accumulates in shellfish, sardines, and anchovies which are then eaten by sea lions, otters, cetaceans, and humans, among others. Exposure to the biotoxin affects the brain, causing them to become lethargic, disoriented, and have seizures that sometimes result in death.

Don't know why 393 is so angry. It is a beautiful building, great location at the end of a cul-de-sac with lots of parking. Also, freeway expansion is going amazingly well and will do nothing but improve the property values in the future. With a cap rate around 6%, it is a heck of a deal.

Marine Mammal Removal

2017-04-24 09:20 AM

Let's clear some things up, lots of confusion of facts in this thread:

The beach is PUBLIC up to the mean high tide line - that is, the historical average high tide. In Santa Barbara, this value is about 4.6feet. So, the mean high tide line (or, private beach property line) is going to be lower than current high tide approximately half of the time.

Right now, we are having high tides of 5-6feet, so YES, it is entirely possible that this marine mammal landed on a private beach. Not definite, but possible and I would even say probable.

Vagrant Activity Op-Ed

2017-04-24 09:08 AM

Put in place a vetting system so that services are only offered to those who have a history of residency in the County of SB. Deny all services to anyone who can't provide this--word will go out in the travelling population, their numbers here will drop a ton. Then we will have more resources to help those who have some sort of investment in improving their situation over the long term, rather than people here for a couple of months who don't care if they crap all over the community.

Interesting that we demand fewer taxes but then require the govt to do our cleaning up too.

Even more interesting is folks with enough personal resources to afford a house at the beach are the first to demand public resources to be spent on personal needs.

Hire a couple of guys off the wall and give them $50 and count your blessings you can still find casual labourers who'll work for less than prevailing wage (if The Wall is built there will be no more labourers on the wall).

575, anyone on a motorcycle on the freeway is endangering themselves for the most part. On city streets they can kill a pedestrian but on a freeway the rider is the one that goes to the hospital. If they survive the wreck.

Whenever they pass me at a high rate of speed, I think to myself- they really have a lot of misplaced trust in my driving skills.
