Beautiful from the air, thanks. I had a friend whose mother took us every year when it was at Pershing Park, bought us strings of tickets and turned us loose. We were about 9, 10, 11, etc. I would get so excited knowing we'd be going I could hardly stand it, almost like Christmas. Not as huge as now.

Used to go when my kids were little. The basketball hoop (ring) had been bent so that it was nearly impossible to make a basket...typical carney deception. They didn't like it when I spent some time pointing it out to prospective patrons. Now I see that the basket (ring) is hidden by sides and a top so it's harder to notice. Maybe a drone could get a good look.

Police Search for Man with Gun in G...

2016-05-01 05:20 PM

I have several firearms, have used them for 50 years, and understand that they are just tools; but they are *killing* tools. You are too caught up in the macho machinery and paranoid anti-government, egotarian aspects. Try reading link #3 again.

You failed to comprehend the provided statistics, and ran off on individual anecdotes that have no bearing on the harm guns do to society as a whole. You also don't seem to understand that firepower has a time dimension. By the argument you provided about fearing more powerful cartridges, one should then lobby for limiting firearms to rimfire power levels. I was at least allowing for big-game hunting. At every point, you simply changed the subject, rather than addressing what was being discussed.

You have a long way to go to learn intelligent, civilized discourse. Perhaps it's ADHD.

Airport Drive In

2016-05-01 11:42 AM

What a wonderful write-up, with research & photos. It must have been a lot of work (or a bunch of fun?) but much time obviously went in to it. So Enjoyable to read. Thank you for sharing this Tom!

I didn't grow up in SB but went to drive-ins in San Diego as a teen - went with my mom, dad, sisters, and it was a great date out with boyfriend and other friends, double-dates were popular too.

It's funny how things that seemed so normal a part of life can just slowly disappear over time. I'm sure I thought there always had been drive-ins. and that there always would be. Just like like folks today. So much unknown ahead - some losses and some fun surprises we have no clue about now. But continually precious with people we care about and who care for us :)

p.s. Great story Alonzo!

I went to a wedding held at the Nampa Drive-In Theater

of dancing. Under the Milky Way in rural Idaho on a
balmy summer night dancing our hearts out to a retro

Report of a Penguin in Isla Vista

2016-05-01 08:08 AM

135 - local weather is not a yardstick for measuring global warming. It can still snow like crazy in winter in some parts of the globe, but that does not mean that global warming is not real. The prediction of global warming was more extreme weather, not hot weather all the time. Multiple measuring stations from different countries have recorded that the average temperature of the planet has risen rapidly, but that does not mean there are not cooler days even in places where high temperature records were broken in winter as happened in CA this year.

And as for flora and fauna, note
Many different species of plants and animals have been moving higher in elevation and farther away from the equator to escape the Earth’s warming climate. Now, new research shows that this phenomenon is occurring at much faster rates than previously realized.

I-Ching Chen from the Academia Sinica in Taiwan and colleagues from the United Kingdom have compiled data from around the world—particularly in Europe and North America—to show that plants and animals have been climbing to higher ground twice as fast as previous analyses had predicted. They’ve also been moving away from the equator toward higher latitudes to beat the heat, at a rate three times faster than researchers earlier thought they would.

Why a penguin, if that is true, would end up here is not clear - it all depends where it came from and what is was trying to do, and may have ended up in the wrong place trying to find a cooler place.

Clearly if you think my comments are non sequitur you lack any cognizant thinking capability. I am just trying to have a fact based discussion, but clearly you are not interested in learning facts and basing a discussion on that. Instead you show your prejudices and try to belittle others (calling them names) based on those prejudices. Since you are not interested in learning anything there is no reason to continue, but I once again ask you to live your live how you want, but do not try to impose your ideals on others. We do not want to go through life with the same ignorance and prejudices you seem to possess.
