Traffic Backed Up on Highway 101

2017-01-19 11:05 AM

YES, people are insecure little creatures and can not deal with any change at all.. as a result the slow lane being closed at Salinas, even though it is not causing a bottleneck, just an on-ramp merger, people freak out and feel the need to drive 30 mph on the freeway.. but no, I am not bitter about it!

488 & 299. Really? do you want to get this started? They should go to a shelter, mental health institution, transition house, or yes maybe in some cases... jail. It depends on the individual. Additionally, these services should only offered to long term local residents of the county. Anyone from out of county/out of state should be seeking assistance from their home community.

It's NOT ok to sleep on the streets/parking lots/beaches.

KCET Reception?

2017-01-19 10:25 AM

KCET ("KCETH" shown in the online programming guide) ch129 is OK here on the east side.

If you use TV Guide's website to look for programming information, when first change from national (generic) listings to more accurate locally-oriented listings by entering your zip code, you need to select the last option which is:

Cox Cable (Santa Barbara) (Digital (non-rebuild))

FYI, I believe most of our PBS programming is now coming from KOCE instead of KCET. That would be PBSHD 10 in the online programming guide.

Police Detain 7 After Clearing Home

2017-01-19 10:13 AM

I lived next door to that meth house for years. I didn't just call the cops on them - I put up a big "meth" sign and an arrow pointed at them. 5 years ago I put up a sign that said "All I got for Christmas was more tweakers" and e mailed a pic. of it to the mayor and she sent it to the police chief. Despite the chief saying "I'm on it ..." here they are selling meth 5 years later? I called the cops once when a woman was smoking meth there while holding a baby (baby talk followed by coughing - repeated endlessly) The cop heard it too and agreed it was someone smoking meth with a baby. They said C.P.S. was full up with drug kids and could not take anymore. He left w/o even doing a knock and talk. That was it for me so I moved up by Shasta lake , which is now full. It is different up here when the cops find a drug house - THE POLICE SHUT IT DOWN !

Kernohan's Toys Closing After 62 Ye...

We live in a Amazon World now. Fact Americans as a whole could care very little about shopping local. If you are under 30 you dont know what that means at all. I am a brick and Mortar store owner and thank God allot of our business is service and Amazon has not gotten there, Yes, Kernohans was expensive but the line of toys they carried were from stellar top of the line toy companies and not the crap from Kmart. Transforming todays business into a model that is unique is essential. Its only going
to get worse for local businesses, and that is not the landlords fault, its the communities fault

As to the car... I worked at the Chevron and the Union 76 at Storke and Hollister around 75-77 and there was a guy who lived just north and west of us against the freeway who had a bit of junk yard going there with stuff he collected to make art with. He had a Rolls Royce he had got for free from someone because it didn't have an engine. He got one into it and drove it a bit while he was doing body work on it. He told me it was fun to have a Rolls Royce but everything about it was expensive. He had recently had to get a new water pump for it. in 1977 that water pump cost him over $800.
But, I'll keep my eyes open for one for you without an engine... you never know. :)

Plaintiff attorneys are the only ones who will fight for you. The deceit and misconduct is more likely to come from the attorneys for the companies that will litigate and extend and delay the case until the plaintiff runs out of resources because they have deep pockets to use. They have no incentive to do a fair settlement as they are hired to get the company out for the least possible cost.

Upper Arroyo Burro Restoration Proj...

2017-01-19 08:57 AM

I love to see the City undertaking great projects like this that protect and restore our local water quality and provide wildlife habitat. But it is a bitter pill that a taxpayer funded acquisition and habitat restoration cannot be accessed and enjoyed by those who paid for it. It could be such an educational and well-being resource to the community. I think the City should really find a way to allow public access. I get the parking issue, but there is a lot of free and legal parking in the nearby neighborhoods and plenty of bike and walking access as well. I don't quite get why you feel you need to provide a parking lot to allow some form of public access?
The Veronica Meadows acquisition has only residential parking available as well, but the public is not banned from that site.

I wouldn't use Raymond Pulverman again. The comment that is written about Pulverman looks like it was written by him. Anyway, he is one of these attorney's who will intimidate you and will get upset if you question certain things that he is doing. Also, he doesn't seem to tell you everything you need to know during negotiations. He does have some good qualities but if you don't know the law that well, it might be best to interview other attorneys. By the way, at the beginning of his interview, he states how much other clients have been awarded. Be leery of that since it is a sales hook to get you in.

and always gave us a cheerful greeting. The big bear
at the entrance was iconic but showing it's wear…how many
thousands of time had its nose been patted!!
Brick and mortar stores nationwide are succumbing to our
love affair with the internet. A sad reality no matter how
convenient. What will happen to so many vacant buildings??

Wonderful memories of Kernohan's. When it was on state you could bring your children and they would play in the house while you shopped. Mrs. Kernohan was lovely she knew all the kids and what their favorite toys were.
I remember when the bear had to go to Disney to have "surgery".
After you were done there you could stop in at Osbornes and pick up some books. Yes, I remember Gervasoni's, with the loose tiles on the floor. The first ornaments on the tree are Silvestri ornaments. Their boxes are put back in the gervasoni bags every year.

I'm curious about what era of school lunches you are talking about? Until about 1980, all school lunches were pretty good, and actually made by the kitchen staff. Slowly but surely, it all became pre-made slop that was made by central locations, often the same company that makes prison food. The quality of the ingredients are usually only one step above dog food, with mechanically separated meat that is only barely 'fit for human consumption'.
There's a wave of interest in making the lunches healthier now, starting a few years ago, but when you look at what they're actually serving kids it's depressing.
This said, that sloppy joes recipe looks quite good, and I probably would have really enjoyed it as a kid as well. What a neat cookbook find to add to your collection! Old cookbooks give a great glimpse into the past. Thanks for sharing with us, Starboy

Our journeys are challenging enough without the addition of mistakes by careless clearly under supervised local workers.
