I was fed up with Cox always raising their rates. They wanted to raise my rates from $180/mo to $210 again, and I don't want their phone to get a bundle deal.

Got a great deal on Directv from Costco, which included HBO/Showtime/Starz for 90 days, NFL package through 2015 + a $200 Costco gift card. Lot's more HD channels & DVR storage. Went to BestBuy, and got Cox internet for $34/mo for the 1st 12 months, then $60/mo after that.

Now spend $100/mo for Directv & Cox. Will go up a bit after 12 months, but nowhere near what I was being charged before.

You will not find a single person who thinks that Cox prices are reasonable. That is also true for all the other cable TV providers in the country true, because of how they price and bundle their services.

As I understand it, two factors greatly contribute to the high costs: bundling of channels, and sports channel costs. Bundling is the equivalent of saying, "I'd like to buy and read this book," and the book seller telling you that to get the book you want, you also have to buy these other 5 books too, whether you want to buy and read them or not. Sports channels, wherein major league sports and golf and other "sports" are televised are almost always included in these bundles, and they cost a great deal because you are helping to pay the obscene athletes salaries and owner profits.

We personally would eliminate all the "S" channels -- Spanish, Sports, Shopping -- as we never watch any of them. That's not an option at this time.

I fought hard with Cox, telling them to cancel my TV and keep just my internet if they wouldn't bring the price down. They agreed to bring the price down, and then sent me a bill for far more than I agreed to. I called them and told them to cancel it, and that I would be reporting them to the government for 'bait and switch' and they took the bill back to what they'd agreed to. We all have to talk to our elected reps and tell them that we want changes in the licensing and pricing of internet access and TV services, because the government is directly involved in selling the monopoly rights to various cable companies.

Why does the City of SB only contract with Cox? They need to ensure we (the PEOPLE) have access to a variety of providers so that there is a little COMPETITION to enhance services and lower prices. Someone told me that Cox has an exclusive contract in SB - is that true?

Best Buy has the Apple box (I think that's what 000 is writing about) for $99.

I call Cox Communications every few months and have my charges reconfigured. The representatives are always very nice about it. Tell them you are seriously thinking of having the t.v. part of your service cancelled. Also: a lot of people don't know about Cox's senior discount. That can save you some dough, right there.

If you are watching a movie and it suddenly goes haywire/pixilated/lip synch goes wonky, note time and channel and program. Call Cox and get a bit back on your bill that way.

Three years ago I cancelled my Cox tv that included HBO and the Indie movie channels in the 200's. I went two years without and did okay. Last year at this time I got a one year deal for the lowest package and HBO for $35 on top of my internet.

Now it's gone up but to tell the truth it's worth for the ease of use. I only watch channels 1-22, 41-49, and my favorite is 132, the Japanese PBS. But HBO is still the best at any price.

Oh, and Netflix. "Orange is the New Black" second season is coming in June.

Then the same people complain when there is no coordination when a plane goes missing.

"The National Airspace System (NAS)[1] of the United States is one of the most complex aviation systems in the world—consisting of thousands of people, procedures, facilities, and pieces of equipment—that enables safe and expeditious air travel in the United States and over large portions of the world's oceans.

The NAS requires approximately 14,500 air traffic controllers, 4,500 aviation safety inspectors, and 5,800 technicians to operate and maintain services. It has more than 19,000 airports and 600 air traffic control facilities. In all, there are 41,000 NAS operational facilities. In addition, there are over 71,000 pieces of equipment, ranging from radar systems to communication relay stations. On average, about 50,000 flights use NAS services each day."

What a nightmare, and yet is runs pretty well.

"The national airspace system (NAS) was created at the dawn of commercial aviation in order to get aircraft from point A to point B in a safe and efficient manner. It’s an old system, but it’s worked for us since World War II. In fact, the United States has the safest skies in the world with respect to air transportation."

City dates from c..2,000 BC. Maybe someone involved with La Goleta Rancho thought the area looked like home.

Starfish Disease

2014-04-18 12:10 PM

Bananas have enough naturally occurring radiation that science communicators developed a metric called the Banana Equivalent Dose, or BED, as a means of explaining in user-friendly terms how much radiation a given thing emits. The BED represents the amount of radiation the body receives from eating one banana and roughly equates to 0.1 nanoseiverts. A seivert is the unit used to measure exposure. An arm x-ray is equivalent to 10 BED. A flight from New York to London: 400 BED. A chest CT scan: 70,000 BED. A fatal dose is roughly 80 million BED. Most of the radiation in bananas comes from potassium-40, which is processed naturally by the body, but some of it arrives in the form of polonium-210, the isotope used in a massive dose to kill former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in 2006.

Pie Pops

2014-04-18 10:53 AM

For those who like to bake, these are just jam tarts on a popsicle stick-- easy to do with some decent ready-to-use pie crust and chunky jam. All you need is a scalloped cutter (Wms- Son.) and a baking sheet. Fancy "sanding sugar" is optional. Cut circles, add small dollop of jam, rub a wet finger around the margin of dough circle, place stick and other circle on top and crimp with tines of a fork. Poke a few holes with a cake tester or toothpick. Bake 2" apart on a sheet at about 375 till golden.

I love Jam tarts. An easier way to make them is cut plain dough circles with a glass, place circle into a muffin pan well, add jam and fold four opposite dough edges in slightly to make a "flower petal" look. Bake as above. Cool, and eat. Really delicious and dainty enough for a girlie party. Guys especially like them with just cheddar cheese in them.

The expense of moving such a common palm does not seem to make sense, given how quickly they grow. In my experience, people love these palms when they are small, but when they begin to get really tall, they cease to be very interesting as landscape plants around houses. Who wants a giant column with a crown of leaves 90 feet up in the air? Unless someone has a very big yard--several acres--a tall skinny palm like this looks out of place. I think they look much better in a group (like the row along Cabrillo Blvd) than as single specimens.

Bite the bullet and pay to have it removed.

I guess it stems from the general juvenile attitude of many surfers. I lose respect for anyone using terms like "barny" and "kook". Those terms really say more about the person using it than their intended target.

That said, it's our responsibility share the ocean. I find many SUPs pretty aware and respectful of the lineup. Also, no one should really complain at places like leadbetter and mondos. But, don't hesitate to tell someone if they're being unsafe. Everyone has to learn somehow. Beginners are best to stay away from others in the water.

I am a lawyer and I can assure you the value of any dental "malpractice" case is so negligible that you rarely ever see one filed in court. The cost involved in proving up such a claim when measured against the potential damage recovery will keep "dental malpractice" from ever becoming the "rampant lawsuits" asserted by the retired dentist. It sounds more like bitterness for being sued by someone once and a fervent belief that they did nothing wrong. Hence the "blame the lawyers" mantra!

Don't believe the dire warnings of what happens if you get arrested for DUI. At least in our area.

Last year my creepy neighbor got his third DUI arrest (his second in 10 years) after running into two parked cars belonging to another neighbor, then fleeing the scene. After his conviction six months later, he was sentenced to 61 days in jail, which he served at home under house arrest, and his driver's license was suspended for six months. His fine was under $2,000.

Whoopty do!

He continued driving with a suspended license until he was caught. His car was impounded for a month and he probably had to pay a fine, but he served no jail time for this latest pecadillo. It would seem that the car impoundment fine was the worst repercussion.

Until the judges realize that drunk drivers should be punished with jail time and heavy fines, the drunkies are going to go right on killing innocent people.

I love the picture of the hummer with the bird of paradise. If I were to name this picture,..I would name it "birds of paradise". The hummingbird's colors are so vibrant you captured the beauty of both. Thank you for sharing!

Roger, while I totally agree with you on the matter of DUIs and desensitization to it from the new crop young "responsible adults" out there (thank you Darryl Genis and Peter Lance) I take offense to you labeling the public snitches for calling in an offender.

A snitch is a drunk driver calling in another drunk driver. A rat is a thief dropping a dime on another thief or a gang banger fingering another banger for a lesser application of the law. Criminals looking for leniency and turning in their friends and associates that's what snitching is all about - not the vast pool of potential victims working with LE to keep their streets and neighborhoods safe.

I'm only disagreeing with you here on your use of the word "snitch" not looking to make you feel foolish or less than.

Don't be ridiculous, the stuff available online legally is inert like this one - as you can see from the picture they recovered at least 80% of the shell casing which would've been impossible if it had been packed high explosive,

These guys land next to us at the Santa Barbara Airport sometimes. The crew is always courteous and wait for a "thumbs up" from us to make sure we have everything tied down before they land. The power is awesome. I want one ! (not really)(sort of) John, come join us for a flight any time.

Those of you who are so quick to "throw it away and get a new one" are part of the problem, not the solution. That devices don't last longer is a sad sad commentary on our attitude toward and value of resources. Shameful really. someday it's going to bite us in the A@#.

Coffee With a Cop in Montecito

Snarky comments aside, I suspect people would whine because cops don't reach out and interact with the community. Then, when they do, they get what's written above... sheesh.

Potential Bomb in Solvang, Resident...

Toward the end of one of the Newshawk articles is the statement that such military devices can be purchased on-line. If this is indeed true, it must be the definition of insanity that a "civilized" society permits such uninhibited commerce in devices for murder and mayhem.

709, since you open the topic, I think that the reason why images of this type can be so captivating is that with the removal of color (and sometimes even the removal of sharp contrast edges), we are left with primarily the composition of the image to focus on, and the composition of the major elements of the frame is where much of the fine art in photography lies.

I am 100% with you. Color pix are great for documentation and they too can be very captivating artistically, but if a photograph really knocks me over artistically, it will almost always be a dramatically composed B&W.

OP - beautiful work, good eye.

Pie Pops

Geezergirl, $2.75 each is a deal! Try making them yourself and see how long it takes from start to finish, then add the cost of ingredients, your rent, insurance, and permits, and calculate your hourly pay. You will see that they are a steal at that price. $4.50 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, now THAT is expensive.

Dysplasia Advice

2014-04-18 07:02 AM

Our dog had torn ACL (knee) and was over weight. A knee surgeon who does humans told me that if the dog has full use of the limb, that is it can on rare occasion put all its weight on it, do not operate. If the limb hangs useless, you must operate. He also said there will be some pain whether it scars naturally or is operated on, so avoiding the trauma of surgery if possible. He had the knee on his dog operated on so he also had direct experience. Keep your dog at exactly what the vet says they should weigh. Our dogs run, jump and play as before the knee trouble. Run 'em lean!

Dui Round-Up Stats

2014-04-18 06:46 AM

Too bad the bias is so heavy towards alcohol related infractions...not to minimize the horror of every vehicular injury or fatality, but it would be nice to have ALL hazardous driving addressed.
I find the driving by some of our seniors to be exponentially worse than most drivers who could be declared DUI (.08+). I think they should have the same enforcement since it is all bad....then of course the texters with the dark tinted windows...blackout tinting sucks since you cannot get any confirmation of eye contact...what happened to infraction enforcement?? Is DUI prosecution so lucrative that we are letting the rest of our vehicle codes go un-enforced....passing on the right much?

Starfish Disease

2014-04-18 06:14 AM

743, the "bogus science" you speak of makes no sense. The starfish die off as noted is from BC to SoCal. You and 720 are talking about an increase in cruise ships in SB.

How does that cause them to die in NorCal, Oregon, Washington, San Simeon, Monterey, and so on and so forth?
