Haggens is supposedly a great market, rather small number of stores, that prides itself on providing healthy, locally-sourced products. Hopefully, this will be an improvement. Also, I believe stores in theSYV, Lompoc, and Santa Maria area are included.

Shoestring Annexation

2014-12-21 12:03 PM

Cool story about SBA! I grew up in the D.C. area (Alex., VA) and always wondered how Washington National Airport (DCA) was actually located in Arlington, VA near where we lived. Probably something similar.
Funny story when they changed the name to Reagan National was that they said "we want it named after a famous president..." We all cocked our heads puppy dog style and said "It already is, is it not?" ;)

Over the years, I have noticed similar gerrymandering for airports all over the country.
On the other note, I, too, have noticed that flying in and out of SBA has become more expensive to the point that I am almost always willing to drive to LAX and store my car rather than pay the extra for SBA convenience.
Back in the 80's, it was a $50 no-brainer, then in the 90's it became an inconvenient but still tolerable $100 extra, but now it is an intolerable $200+ extra per ticket and when multiplied by several travelers in same family...the no-brainer is now to drive to LAX and pay for long-term parking.

Venoco's Oil Plant May Shut Down

2014-12-21 11:52 AM

Local reality cannot be extrapolated to the entire state of CA - there are pockets that are far worse and others that are far better.

Yes going from abysmal to merely bad is not good enough, but the Great Recession was severe and disastrous for many, in addition to the fact that California was in a bad state for over a decade before Brown.

To expect a magic wand to change all of that is unrealistic. And yes, CA taxes are high, but many are temporary until conditions improve.

The drought is a similar event to that of the recession-and-CA-debt .... in that many people expect it to be over after a few good rains. Expecting the economic conditions to be over after a few good years, is unrealistic.

Wages for the middle-class have flat-lined for a long time - since the time of RR. There is an accumulative result - the overall wealth of citizens declined significantly, while those at the top have always benefited. 95% of the recession recovery has gone to them because that is the way it is has been rigged.

But CA is first in so many things, and is striving hard to overcome deficits imposed on it, that often one has to choose according to one's priorities. I would rather not live in a state that has the standards of Texas or North Dakota.

Venoco's Oil Plant May Shut Down

2014-12-21 11:11 AM

747P. I'm 732P, and my reality differs significantly from the rosy picture you cite. As a small business owner in a heavily regulated industry, we finally moved our business out of state. We went from over 2 dozen fees, taxes, licenses, & registrations that we had to calculate and file each year (between state, federal, and local) to 5, a huge drop in non-productive paperwork. That translates to time and resources I can spend on doing my job and being profitable.

I'm back here for a few months to finish the move. I still know tons of unemployed and underemployed people, both young and old in this town, especially compared to previous employment opportunities, and these are primarily highly educated, very productive people.

Maybe selected big businesses or big agriculture are doing OK, but small business and normal people are still really hurting here. When the politicians or press report news that doesn't square with the reality that we're living each day, I question the news before I question the reality. Going from abysmal to merely bad, still isn't good. We're not blowing smoke; they are.

Shoestring Annexation

2014-12-21 10:17 AM

I agreed with 897, until about 3 1/2 years ago. I had to go to Ottawa (Canada) to visit family and found a reasonable fare from LAX at $453.00 Just for a laugh, before I signed off, I replaced LAX with SBA and ... imagine my surprise when it added only $4.00 to the total price. Needless to say I booked it immediately.
And about 50 years ago, we booked a flight from LAX to Scotland. It was about $700 then, but best of all the short flight from SBA to LAX was included ... after the fact!

Sheriff Deputy Accidentally Shot in...

These are vacant buildings that Citrix will be building up in the near future and that law enforcement uses for officer and canine training. It will be interesting to see if Citrix still offers up the buildings, but any doom and gloom about others getting hurt is a little excessive.

Interesting note: I was leaving the parking lot behind a number of vehicles that had been in that area for training, behind six or seven vehicles including patrol cars, SWAT type vehicles, etc..., we were all turning right but only one of the vehicles in the line had their turn indicator on, and that car was mine. And it was not a right turn only scenario.

Shoestring Annexation

2014-12-21 09:58 AM

This brings to mind an airport question that I have. It seems that for several years that the added price of air travel to include Santa Barbara has jumped significantly (several hundred dollars) for many common end destinations around the U.S., where 10-20 years ago Santa Barbara could be included in the itinerary for modest cost. it was a great convenience to use our local airport. Now it seems that there are large and substantial savings on most trips by taking the Airbus and departing from LAX. Does this coincide with and reflect the costs to the airlines of renovating our airport? Just curious whether this came back to bite us? Why is Santa Barbara so uneconomic to fly out of now?

Salamander Question

2014-12-21 09:38 AM

That's an arboreal salamander. From California Herps: "These salamanders can be seen walking around on the ground at night, or climbing on walls and trees, especially during or after rains, usually from about November until the end of the spring rains in April or May. They may also be found under wood, branches, flower pots, slabs of cement, paving stones, or any other objects in your yard, and they are also occasionally found inside basements and garages." Best thing to do is let it go in a damp area. They like compost heaps.

Restaurants in SB should take a hint from Pascuccis and offer LOWER PRICED FARE. When Pascuccis first opened the prices were the lowest in town, and it took off from there. People in this over-expensive town want a BARGAIN and if you can offer quality food at un-resort-like prices then you will WIN at restaurants. It would be a guaranteed packed house. Take note, new restaurant wannabes!

762P - food by its nature can only be healthy, otherwise it is not food.

"Food is any substance[1] consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth."

Edibles that do not provide nutrition, and do not enhance health can not be defined as food.

Jury Awards UCSB Alum in Excessive ...

Seeking to criminalize droves of ordinary people who might have had two drinks with dinner (gasp!) in order to annoint herself as DUI cop queen is not violent. You're right.

However, her sharply authoritarian (yet faux-courteous) tone rubs most people she encounters the wrong way and, when they dare challenge her with words, in come her favorite cover unit(s) (tall male officers that she seems cozier with) to possibly break a nail. You might call it violence by proxy.

Full Lane Bike Riding

2014-12-21 08:03 AM

The conversion of streets like Bath and Castillo to one lane with huge bike lanes was to get the bicyclists to use them for travel in the downtown area. Instead they continue to use DeLavina, Chapala, State, Anacapa and Santa Barbara streets which are all heavily traveled by automobiles. A possible solution is to BAN bicycles on DeLavina, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Chapala and State streets. This might reduce the large number of accidents between autos and bikes which has been noted in the statistical reporting.
