Wildfire at Cuesta Summit

This fire is way up on the top of the mountain, not anywhere near the roadway, 676P. Hubby and I are on our way to San Francisco and saw the fire. We passed by around noon. Lots of white smoke on top of the highest peak at the top of the pass, CalFire congregating at the pullout just before you start down the grade toward Atascadero.

Thank you, Tom, for putting this little bit of history together and posting it for us to read. And thank you for being such a good writer, too.

Elegant Farmer. Gawd. I had forgot all about that place. My Mother used to take me to The Blue Ox. We knew nothing of the history of that sycamore tree. What a terrific tale. May the tree survive another century or more.

Great photos. Thanks SO much for putting them in slideshow form, so that one can just step through the zoomed up photos (unlike thumbnails that have to be zoomed then unzoomed to get back to the thumbnails.)

Also, the .gifs are fun - much better than having to watch videos. (Except for the panning .gif - that was a bit much.)

Achadjian to Run for Congress

2015-04-19 12:12 PM

As a county supervisor he made much of his "willingness to forge a compromise" but in fact his "swing vote" ALWAYS swung to the conservative moneyed side. He did little for his district in the way of needed infrastructure (crumbling roads, almost no law enforcement coverage., etc) but always showed up at events to have his picture taken. He voted for and worked openly for the interests of developers. Not a man to be trusted to serve all.

Rodenticides Can Harm Wildlife

2015-04-19 11:43 AM

The local exterminators are assuring their customers that the poison that they are putting in their bait stations is "harmless" to pets and other wildlife because the rodents cannot get it out of the bait station. First of all, yes they can, I have seen it next door. Second of all, they just blow off the idea that rodents killed with the bait are harmful to pets and other wildlife. The place to start is with the local exterminators. Make them stop lying!

Cheryl's Birthday Confuses Internet

2015-04-19 11:34 AM

Albert (told the month) knows that Bernard (told the date) doesn't know the answer at first. It thus can't be in May or June, since those are the two months that have unique dates (18 and 19). I.e., if Bernard was told "the 19th," he'd be able to conclude the answer was "May 19"). So Albert must have been told July or August.

Bernard figures this out, so he now knows it's July or August. He says "I know the answer now," so his date must not be the 14th, or else he still could know (could be either July 14 or August 14), so Bernard must have been told 15, 16, or 17. So we're now down to three possibilities: July 16, August 15, or August 17. Since Bernard was told one of those numbers (16, 15, or 17), he now knows the answer.

Albert then says "I know the answer now too." If he were told August, he still couldn't know whether it was August 15 or 17 - thus, he must have been told July, which leads to the answer - July 16.

The best way to stop this is for people to understand the consequences and stop buying the products. A ban would help as well.

San Francisco 3.8%
Santa Barbara 4.0%
San Diego 5.2%
Bakersfield 6.8%
Santa Maria 9.0%
Lompoc 10.2%

Rodenticides Can Harm Wildlife

2015-04-19 11:07 AM

There is a "native grassland preserve" at the end of Via Clarice in the high end subdivision of La Romana Estates. This 11 acre preserve was part of the mitigation measures for this development which is more than twice the density of the surrounding area. This land is only accessed by the homeowners within the gates and is supposed to be preserved in perpetuity. Part of preserving native grassland is for its use as a foraging site. For many raptors including White tailed kites, this is their last open space to forage in the San Antonio Creek area. Bobcats, Coyotes and Mountain Lions also forage here. But apparently the HOA has decided it's acceptable to have poision bait stations surrounding and in the preserve. These green containers are Filled with an anticoagulant toxin that is no longer available in California due to its horrific consequenses . All of this to eradicate the squirrels which in this area are controlled by the species that eat them. It makes no sense to poison an animal that is food for so many others. But these are the same people who move here and think coyotes are going to eat their children....

A Surprise Witness

2015-04-19 10:08 AM

It is worth noting, while we are thinking of local "history". For the enlightenment of some of those who think that we, the people in this area today, somehow need to atone for any injustices or activities that occurred in this area more than a one to four centuries ago, almost ninety eight percent of the inhabitants of America today were either born here or immigrated here since 1925. We were not and are not responsible for things that may have occurred centuries ago and therefor should not suffer from any "guilt trip" for such things and events occurring in ancient local history (or anywhere else for that matter).

My dog was dumped at the (then abandoned) Santa Maria shelter, which is a kill shelter. In fact, my dog was from a litter of 12 and the Santa Maria animal truck was going to euthanize them ALL because they were on the streets, covered in mange. DAWG, bless them forever, heard about them and took the whole crew. All the dogs found forever homes. But the Santa Maria shelter is a scary place to be, and a fatal one, for dogs. Thanks, heartfelt thanks, to those who adopt dogs on the brink of death. And YES adopt older dogs. I tried valiantly to adopt the pups' mother, but she'd been spoken for, and hilariously, lives about a mile away from me. On a big ranch.

Rodenticides Can Harm Wildlife

The entire planet is becoming a toxic landfill - and the powers-that-be, no matter where they are, are doing little or nothing to counter it. Big money is made by the manufacturers of herbicides, rodenticides, insecticides and fungicides and they create employment.... so its hardly a wonder that politicians stand by and ignore this slow-motion disaster.

There are some great and interesting artists in an around the funk zone, such as Gone, Tajo McBurnie, Dan Levin, exhibits at the Santa Barbara Arts Fund, etc, etc. Just because the Foundry made and sold horrible tacky frogs and other crap art does not mean that the entire funk zone is artistically vacant. Bless their hearts, Camarillo has "super user friendly" hrs--note the 7 DAYS A WEEK until 6! On the other hand, our shelter,-

Santa Barbara Animal Shelter
5473 Overpass Road
Shelter hours
Mon through Fri 9 to 4:45 Sat 10 to 4 CLOSED ALL Sundays and NEVER after 5

Seriously? These limited hours has potential adopters so pigeon holed into non-work friendly hours that it makes it almost impossible for them to get there. Director of Animal Services, Jan Glick has been asked repeatedly to extend the open hours both for dog retrieval and adoption, but to no avail.

I am not sure what kind of public? she is catering to, but it isn't John Doe working man and his family looking to adopt a pet nor is it in any of the animal's best interest. Call the czar,Jan Glick, (805) 681-5284 she has been in charge FOREVER to the tune of a couple hundred thousand dollars a year salary-our tax dollars NOT at work - and it continually gets worse AND sadder out there under her watch.

@556, so when did you move here? I also remember the 80's here, with the Mom and Pop stores, police being polite, hell, they would drive you home if you were caught driving under the influence. Yeah, it's 2015, so what, the arts were appreciated (they still are by the way), but a different social air has taken over our small town. No stoplights at the freeway crossing at State Street, hours spent in traffic commuting to work because rents are off the hook to live here, people barely saying hello (people here used to be very polite, and the old timers still are), yeah, I guess you are right, screw them all, BUT don't expect me to, I have a love foe this town, and will respect those that live here, things change, but I still care
