Yes, even on the internet I expect a certain amount of anonymity and privacy - you don't know my name, and you're not going to unless you happen to be a hacker of some sort.

And I don't do Facebook because all the personal information needed to open an account is NONE of Mark Zuckerberg's GD business.

Fresh Roasted Coffee Beans

2015-03-30 09:18 AM

Handlebar Coffee for sure! Just to clear up a couple of misconceptions about coffee. Coffee should be used as close to the roasting date as possible. It's the one thing most stressed in any of the coffee forums, books and by the world barista champions. Freshness counts. It is true that there can be harsh flavor components to freshly roasted coffee and that "resting" will mellow out some of those components. That's because the coffee goes stale. If the flavor out of the roaster isn't to your liking, try different beans or a different roast. Instead of a dark French roast, try something like an American roast or even half city roast. Generally coffee goes stale two to three weeks after roasting and generally people who make coffee at home almost never have fresh coffee. Roasting releases oils from the coffee and the longer the beans sit unused, the more of that flavor is lost.

Privacy??? You have no privacy when it comes to what is visible to all from the street, such as the front of your house. OMG people are NUTZ. I have every right to stand in front o your house on the public sidewalk/street and take as many pics as I want. Maybe I will and if someone throws rocks, sue them and get me some money!!

Dealing With Termites

2015-03-30 09:10 AM

Start with the full inspection, which should cost under $200. Or, you can do a mini-inspection, where they only look at spots you see termites, which is cheaper. Then they can spot-treat that area and the cost can vary depending on the situation.

Interesting. So if I were someone who wanted to scope out the minute details of an area before I did a crime, all I would have to do is put tons of cameras on my van, make people think I was connected to Google, Facebook, Yahoo, or Apple, and the world is my oyster. Odd. Or, I could just be the government (ours or someone else's) wanting to know everything about everyone everywhere so I could tax, regulate, imprison, interrogate or destroy. I find it very strange how we are becoming so complacent to being completely recorded and observed.

Mystery Fluff

Op here. Yes, fuligo septica, aka dogs vomit slime mold is correct! Must admit we were conflicted whether to study it or barricade ourselves indoors and call the authorities. Happily, with a little creative sculpting, we will be saving a bundle on the kid's Easter basket this year!
Thanks all for the brilliant info and wicked laughs.

Possible Gunshots Heard

Maybe there should be a regular feature on edhat where people can inquire about possible gunshots.

You could call it 'The Gunshot Files'

To paraphrase the kid in the movie The Sixth Sense: "I hear gunshots, they're EVERYWHERE!"

People have been using fireworks to scare off crows and other birds in that area. You may have noticed the crows are especially loud this time of year along with the other birds.

Why throw rocks? Maybe because like all other birds, the vultures who drive these privacy invading street view cars need to swallow the occasional rock which sticks in their gizzard and helps them grind up the road kill they eat.

Horse Trail Closure?

2015-03-30 07:39 AM

I don't know where Amapola is. If in Montecito, the Montecito Association has worked to iron these things out for decades. Otherwise, if it hasn't been worked out with a contract, it will need negotiations and a contract. It is private property after all. Needs some kind of due process, no?

Horse Trail Closure?

2015-03-30 01:31 AM

The Tea Gardens property did not have a prescriptive easement. It had a fence and signs that said no trespassing. The partiers who started the fire certainly were trespassing. Also the people who sued weren't the trespassers, and they didn't claim they were damaged on Tea Gardens property. They sued because the fire started on Tea Gardens property. All the legal decisions in those cases smelled of payola.

67P, people do just that, all the time. Pay money to fight to keep a public right of way for all people, not just for those who pay. It's America baby!
