I do a lot of driving in this town. The whole downtown
area corridor streets are bad. Olive, Laguna, De La
Vina, Bath, Castillo. Most drivers are either speeding or
on the phone or both. I see very few cops when driving
around, guess that they're busy trapping people in sting
operations rather than going out on patrol and doing the
job the taxpayers want them to do.

Local gangs: question and answers |
2009-11-20 03:06 PM |
There was a stabbing a couple months ago, on Walnut, in Noleta. It was a Westside gang attack against Rock Creek gang.
Downtown Santa Barbara, State Street, is divided between Eastside gang (east side of State outward), and Westside gang (west side of State Steet, outward).
It's all about drug sales territories. Almost all of the violence of deaths, stabbings, beatings, on and near State Street are between Eastside, and Westside, gangs.
Westside gang teens, and Rock Creek gang teens, go to SMHS, Eastside gang teens go to S.B.H.S., and Goleta gang teens go to DPHS. They also go to the independent school centers, if they can't cut it in regular high school.
Last year (maybe 2 years ago now), there was a stabbing near Trader Joe's on Milpas. The stabber was Carpas (Carpinteria gang), but I'm not sure who got stabbed (maybe Eastside?).

This is an important question that gets down to the root of the problem...
How can I tell by just looking at a Mexican kid whether he (or she) is in a gang? I'm sure some non-gang members wear the standard vato-wear. If I can't tell by just looking at them, then I am going to treat every Mexican kid from 12-24 that isn't dressed nicely as a gang member.

Yes, brining is soaking in a salt water solution
(brine!), usually overnight if you're doing it
yourself. It helps the meat retain water while
it's cooking. I've been doing it for years since I
read about it in an old Sunset magazine. Then
I BBQ the bird. We usually have anywhere
from 12 to 20+ people for Thanksgiving, which
often means 2 birds. We've done side-by-
sides of brined and not brined, and people
almost always prefer the brined turkey. And
BBQ brined is the ultimate taste test winner.
They're not salty at all. I can't wait!

Johnigan gets 15 to life |
2009-11-20 12:12 PM |
People close to Johnigan asked for the reduced sentence of probation so she could better serve the community... well we have already seen how she has served the community by disregarding the laws and driving under the influence, killing a well respected and loved Valley resident. Her defense also said not to take her away from Johnigan's young daughter, but Johnigan made her own fate when she got behind the wheel. We can't bring Laura back, and she was a mother as well, and soon to be a grandmother.
I felt Johnigan should get life, for the one she took, but I feel somewhat vindicated as she will at least have 12 years to ponder what she's done. Hopefully time in prison will allow her to change for the better.
Laura was one of a kind. Thankfully I grew up with her in my life, I just feel sorry for those who will never get to know Laura and how amazing she was.

I'm glad someone mentioned the notion of including more appreciations, and I'm adding it to my list. I hope people bring their own lists too.
Mud, thanks for seeking clarification about whether I get any special treatment by Ed. I don't. My impression is that most of what gets sent to Ed goes on. If people read (or in the case of pics, view) what you send, my impression is Ed's more likely to post your next. So maybe I just send more than most folks, and for their own reasons people read/view it. Anyway, I share your interest in schools, transportation and EdHat. :)
Someone asked if AE is free, and my understanding is that many classes still are. Those are supported by state funding, endowments from our community, and the SBCC general fund. Other classes have a small fee that's allowed by the state while still getting state funds, such as "materials" fees for supplies or photocopies. Other classes have a fee that covers the full cost of administration, facilities and faculty for that and probably some portion of other classes. Maybe others can correct/expand on this either here or at the meeting(s).

Yes, for some reason the language classes are included in the non-state funded classes. I can't figure that one out. I could have been wrong stating that, but from what I've heard it's the reason behind not charging more for most classes. They simply cannot legally do so.
And I brought up the donation - yet I have yet to do so myself. I believe more people are willing to pay twice as much for a class, but unwilling to just 'give' $10 to the school. We have no promises to keep our classes from being cut, so why would we give extra money? It's a nice idea, but how realistic is it really?

Nick Welsh, who writes "Angry Poodle Barbecue," over at the Independent has been the town's best political/opinion columnist for years in my view. But Nick is now the last man standing.
Craig: So I guess it's o.k. for Nick to be a political columnist AND write opinion? If so, why was it not o.k. for Travis? And it's o.k. for Nick to go hard at the moderate and the right, but it wasn't o.k. for Travis to go hard at the moderate and the left? Why the double standard?
I didn't always agree with Rae. And, I thought she gave Randall Von Wolfswinkel the kid-glove treatment. But I must say, of all the opinion columnists I've ever known, you'll never meet a nicer one than Rae.
Craig: Why not give RVW the kid-glove? He's a wealthy supporter of protecting Santa Barbara from over-development and crony politics. Why in the world would you ever look that gift horse in the mouth? I really don't understand the anger here.

John's factor list for Adult Ed |
2009-11-20 10:22 AM |
I am looking forward to today's meeting at the Wake Center. Thank you John Wiley for keeping this thread going today, and for your compilation of ideas. I have three areas of comment: administrative leadership, funding and continuity. A cooperative approach is good and I agree with all your positive statements, so, forgive the less positive tone of the following.
1) Administrative leadership: One responder to your article of 11-19 generously credited Dr. Arellano, saying, her announcement that SBCC's recent accreditation report included praise for Adult Ed. show that "....her and her team (are) getting the word on the specialness of this program..." I emailed her to ask if this were the case. Her response was that the praise was for the current program, not the program's past. She believes, appareantly, that the praise is for her current leadership.
2) Funding alternatives. This is going to be a complex issue, because State funding often carries with it some mandates. The administration's seat-of-their-pants approach to initiating charges for classes like Aquatics is not the way to operate. Would donations help? If one decides to attempt a charitable contribution, make sure your program doesn't end up like the Weaving program: their small fund, probably intended by donors to maintain looms and so on, has been targeted by the administration as money the weavers could use to "pay rent" somewhere else when they are told to leave their room at Wake Center. It could be that specific endowments are the way to go. I would guess that is one reason Mr. Green from the Fund for SB is at the podium for these meetings. Yes, he is an outstanding moderator. But when concerned students ask if they can help by making endowments or large contributions, I would not be surprised if the answer includes something like "The Fund for SB is here to serve you."
3) Let's keep track of the promises that the administration makes at these public meetings. At last month's mee... [ more ]

Imagine if we took all that money we spent bailing out car companies and spent it on building homeless shelters. We could do some real good.

13 does have a historical connection to the letter "M" as a reference to both the Mexican Mafia "La Eme" and marijuana, however, its most common use for the past 20 years is a reference to Southern California. Gangs that traditionally have "13" at the end indicate that they are from Southern California and usually have a majority of Latino members.
A traditional name using "13" could be something like:
Vatos East LA
~13~
Northern California gangs use "14" at the end of their name. The 14th letter being "N" and "14" usually signifying "Norte" which is also a common end to a Northern California gang name.
Northern California gangs usually appear something like:
SJ Locos - 14!
~Norté~

And what to do if they "fail" the test, deprive of
welfare payments, so people die on the streets with
no money for food or shelter?
Better would be to funnel all cash payments directly
into food and shelter providers. Not a perfect solution
but there is no perfect solution.
Every morning I see two women passively begging
with a sign by TJ's on Milpas - and later in the day,
across the street at the gas station. I don't give
money because I have no doubt but that it will go to
booze, but I hurt for them, all day having nothing to
do, sleeping probably in the bushes.

I was at a class and couldn't attend the first forum. What the instructor complained about, though, was that the Augusoft online system designated her class as "closed" instead of "waiting list," discouraging those who might show up the first night hoping to fill the seats of the no-shows. Our class was canceled for lack of students -- the instructor said the only other Adult Ed class she'd taught that didn't fill up was on the night of 9/11.

Much respect to Amy Goodman and Democracy Now for all the good work they do.
The article mentions three things that I think are very important to take note of:
The glorification of brutality in the name of security- TV shows like the one mentioned are entertaining but they encourage viewers to form certain views that I believe can be misleading.
The infiltration of activist groups by 'spys' opposing their agenda- When it's in someone's best interest to employ someone to go undercover to monitor activist groups working for democracy, I think that's a problem.
Similarly, the arrest of the man at the G20 summit for posting public information on twitter is troubling because, like the article states, the US encouraged Iranian protesters to do just that when facing the same conditions.

Thanks for the list of suggestions. (And @46330, you
can find out the cost of various classes by going to
sbcc.net, continuing ed, and check the catalog.)
My suggestions:
This is a list of improvements or suggestions for same;
it's not a mediation where one praises and so forth. I'd
remove all the positives into a separate category.
Praise is a given and although very nice for the
recipient, gets boring and counterproductive in working
for specific improvements.
The computer system for registration seems to be
being improved.
There should be a factual presentation: what's being
cut --- and why, specifically; what are the salaries of
instructors --- and how can class enrollees or would-be
enrollees help. What are the salaries of administrators
and how do they compare with those of instructors,
hour/hour? In general, what are the expenses that are
requiring such a draconian paring? There is no
property tax, but what are the upkeep costs, the utilities
costs?
Shorter terms? I don't think so --- it's already on a
quarter system and a shortened one, at that. Cut it
more and most classes won't be worth attending.
How about providing a list of the classes offered, the
enrollments so we can understand why they're being
cut. 20 is a very heavy burden to meet for some; is
there any way to work around this, for instance, for the
other students in the class to pay for the missing? Has
the administration attempted to work with the state on
this?
Have they looked for any grant fu... [ more ]

The prosecutors in this case deserve a hearty thanks and congratulations.
There are a couple of more terrible drunk driving cases that will be before the courts in the next year. My question is are these cases going to be as vigorously prosecuted as this case was since the victims are not prosecutors themselves? The proof will be in the sentencing.

To 46356 LMR, I am so sorry about your loss, I hope the children left by the tragedies are getting the care and love they need. I too believe the sentence should be as harsh as possible. Perhaps it will keep the people who have to numb their brains out of cars. The victims and the family members left behind suffer far more than 15 years. There will never be enough justice to bring back those they have harmed. Forgive and punish.

I try to read all opinion columnists, until they get
boringly repetitive. If I know what's going to be said,
there's no point reading. It's not important that I agree
or disagree. Cheri Rae's columns were the best. Yours,
too, except for the concentration on the News-Press,
are always worth reading, thinking about. Nick Welsh's
except when his gets mean and petty, as he did about
Measure B. (No problem if someone disagrees but it's
important to be accurate, something that can't be said
about Tyler now writing in the News-Press.)
But Cheri Rae's were particularly interesting in that
there was such a broad range of topics. And they are
so well-written, as are yours. Thank you, Cheri, for
them; and thank you, Craig, for yours.

I don't understand how they came up with this sentence? 15 years to life! I would have loved this judge to be the one who sentenced my little brothers killer. My brother died 4 yrs ago when a wrong way drunk driver got on the north bound off ramp at El Capitan going south bound. My brother was only 27 and had 2 young sons under the age of 7. He was a Santa Barbara City Employee for the public works dept. He was a Valuable employee and he recevied letters from our City mayor and cheif of police. His killer was not legal in this country, no driver license,no insurance, etc injured another couple and his wife and my brother died at the scene. This killer only got 9 yrs and some months with 560 days time served. Then when he's done here in the US he will then be deported back to Mexico. Thats just wrong ! Also on that note my little brother was the second one to be killed by a drunk driver. Im the oldest of three and my first brother died in 1998 killed by a drunk driver, he also left behind a 3 mon old son.I guess it all depends WHO you are in the city of Santa Barabara when a tragedy happens and when in comes down to sentencing.

How can that get done?
No mitigating the seriousness of the crime, but this

In yesterday's article about the drop in tourism in Santa Barbara, the comment was made that our city is perceived as too high-end for tourists. Has anybody considered that people don't want to pay top dollar to be accosted by drunk, stoned-out beggars on every corner? Yes, Dwight Murphy Park is a haven for them, but does anybody notice that State Street looks like a tent city lately? Yesterday I was downtown at 11:30 in the morning. EVERY bench for four blocks along State Street was occupied by a homeless person, accompanied by (stolen) shopping carts brimming with trash. Would you want to travel and pay premium prices to encounter that? It's one thing to be filled with compassion for these unfortunate people and want to help them. It's something else entirely to let them take over our city. There are hundreds of creative, brilliant individuals in Santa Barbara. Surely there must be a solution for this problem. Edhat - why not run a contest? I'll bet some truly innovative ideas would result. It's obvious that the politicians aren't going to do anything; we evidently don't even have any loitering laws - or if we do, they're definitely not being enforced. It's up to us to find a way to help those who want to be helped, get rid of those who don't, and take back our beautiful city.

Why is the question something about what you don't like about the new registration system? Why is it not a question of what you think about the new registration system - which then opens it up to both what you like and what you don't like about it?

Wherefor Art Thou, SB? |
2009-11-20 05:44 AM |
Thanks for the info John Wiley...I will be there today.
I have used Adult Ed for forty years ... I pay between $40 and $60 dollars for my courses there...Yoga & Golf and it is worth every dollar.
I also attended Bill Downey's excellent writing class and have his book "Write On!".
I approve moderate increases for the classes and would support some sliding scale for those who have difficulty paying. Ad Ed has always done that with the computer classes.

There may be some qualifications to the statement that "SBCC will gladly accept donations to support classes." My impression is that it has been done in the past, but may not be possible since the change in administration. It may also be that funds will be accepted for a class or program but not guaranteed to be used only for that. I was told tonight that casual student donations go into a general fund.
I believe there are specific endowments that have been made in larger amounts with legal requirement that they go only to a certain class, program or instructor.
If it's true that small and/or casual donations can't be reliably directed to a specific person or interest, perhaps a strategy could be to form interest groups to aggregate donations into endowments. Doing this could encourage fund matching as we've seen with land preservation efforts. It could also help the college with what I'd guess are concerns about tracking small amounts of money to ensure they are used as agreed.
Something slightly related to this that is of great interest to me, is ensuring that we act as a community. If only those interested in the skywriting classes (humorous example) take actions or make donations, all of us will lose something. Eventually that would include the skywriting fans, because without the other programs any remaining will have higher costs.
I hope we can unite students, faculty, staff, admin, and everyone else who understands the value of Adult Ed. Let's begin again tomorrow at 3pm, Wake Center Auditorium.

@4627 I think your post is inappropriate and
wonder why it was allowed. You're
anonymous; how do I know that you "know her
personally...and [she] has always found a way
to blame other people for her actions."
If you have an opinion, state it. Or don't hide
behind your anonymity when you're "stating
facts" about someone's character. I'm not
condoning her behavior, but your slander is
gutless.

I agree that it could be useful to consider ways that classes could have "reduced fees for those who can not pay full." I believe some fee classes have done something like that informally, so maybe that could be expanded and formalized.

46160, I guess you're concerned that anyone who has worked for Adult Ed might be suspect because they could have a financial stake or some other agenda? Would you like it best if everyone who speaks up in this dialog were students and perhaps some faculty, staff and/or admin whose integrity you have reason to trust?
I'd like to offer that my preference is for anyone interested to speak up, because that can provide us with the widest spectrum of values, concerns and ideas.

PUENTE, I wonder about your assertion that the Adult Ed preservation movement is leaderless. First, I wonder if many in the community have lost faith in the college leadership. Second, I wonder if we can now assemble a community group that could amicably collaborate to provide the college with leadership in the spirit of it being a community college.
In answer to your question, I do not want to apply for any post. I'm interested in joining with others, and if asked I'm willing to facilitate a meeting using what I've found helpful in group process. That is: to seek common ground, clarify core values, ensure open dialog, and allow creative positive experiments to emerge.

@Comment 46217, I'd suggest that you check
out the identity of any third person such as "Mark

He may be an "Ambulance Chaser" attorney
trying to drum up business without the family's
consent.
I'd suggest you contact the Policy Dept. with your
information first. I'm just saying...

Cheri Rae departs Daily Sound |

To 46425 and 46273:
I agree it's sad to see most local businesses go under. I run one of them also. That part I get.
But a newspaper is a bit of a different animal. They have a responsibility to the community and their ethics.
When the DS started right after the News=Press fired their journalists, I applauded the DS and sincerely hoped it would prove to be a legitimate alternative to the N-P. I rooted for them. But once I saw their editorial "board" consisted of Cheri Rae and Loretta Redd, my heart sank, as they basically represent the same viewpoint as Wendy, Travis and the N-P gang, albeit in a more respectable manner. I even wrote an email to Jeremy Gordon strongly encouraging the DS not to make the same mistake as the N-P by only presenting one point of view. My email was never returned.
Fast forward a couple years and now I get my local news from edhat and Noozhawk, with a bit from the Independent. In my opinion Noozhawk does a pretty good job of presenting a broad point of view.
