I wonder if the posters all read the article and watched the
videos. How can some make the Kings out to be the villains
here.? They did not own the plane, but leased it from Cessna.
They had never been told that the newly assigned number in
2009 had once been affixed to a 1968 Cessna 150 which had
been stolen eight years prior. The 150 is a two seater, the 172
is a four seater.

Time for the mayor to get on the bully pulpit and start discussing the
Big Five that has become so obvious here: drugs, alcohol, gangs,
vagrants and domestic violence.
Whatcha gonna do Madame Mayor now that you have all our
attention. How are you going to tell this story and get us all on the
same page to combat this, because history is repeating itself every
single night and day of your watch.
Big Five: Drugs, alcohol, gangs, vagrants and domestic violence.
Wrap all this up in a bow and show us an action plan. Can't have
one without a few of the others. Where is the community outrage
this continues to plague our community. This is where your bully
pulpit need to galvanize community outrage for action.
Get rid of these Big Five from our doorsteps, and then you can get
your police force to deal with "real crime".

Hey zebragirl - sometimes cops let people off with a warning. Not every traffic stop is treated equal.
If you have the right to drive and just don't have your license on you, that is not a crime but an equipment violation, like having a broken taillight.
What did you think of the guy who just never got the renewal and never thought of it? When you only need to get a license renewed every 4 years that's pretty easy to forget!
Putting the boot on at someone's house IS genius! Sort of a shame thing there too.... all your neighbors would know!

Wish the city would use any empty land around town they own for
more community gardens. Or ask developers who sit on their
properties past a few years to open them up for community
gardening as well, under the city direction. A city that digs in the
earth and learns how to feed itself has to be on a good track.
We need to honor the agrarian roots this country had until only a
short time ago in the big picture. Too much city, to much cement
and asphalt, too dense, too little private digging room. We could be a
model city if we stopped putting housing with more mouths to feed
and instead feed the mouths that are already here.
BMX parks are not where this city should be going for young
people. Community gardens is the far better path.

Agree with 410. LOL-ing is a little like the inescapable loudmouth on a cell phone. You only get half the joke but are subject to all the distraction. Laughter is good when shared with the willing. Otherwise it's like second-hand smoke - thanks for not sharing. Singing is a more complete act. Depending on the voice (and sanity) of the singer, it can range from tolerable to obnoxious; but at least you're in on the whole thing. Gotta' say that both laughing and singing are a decided improvement over much of what's been happening on State Street these lazy, crazy days.

The Demise of Dry Cleaning |
2010-09-02 03:08 PM |

1) True: Ablittโs has around 100 of 2000 labels in the system autotagged for special handling. Knowing the difference between Dockers and Armani, and how to handle each properly is what sets Ablitt's apart! Diane VF dresses can sell for over $1400! I want them to test the cleanability of a garment they know may be problematic โdyes, beads, seams, etc. Not every cleaner takes this care, and customers may not understand the minimal charge. They have a liberal refund policy the first time a customer experiences this charge and customers can choose to have items cleaned at there own risk.
2) Prices are clearly marked - and all orders are returned with invoices attached, not removed like many competitors. Published prices are in the front office: no hidden prices.
3) Edhat should interview a drycleaner to get insight into how drycleaning works โ and try to press a blouse. Call Sasha at Ablittโs and check it out.
Hey, you get what you pay for. Ablittโs takes great care of my clothes.

Both videos were very informative. There will be some serious
updating in police departments around the country. And data
bases will be checked more thoroughly. In this case there was
no check done from the Santa Barbara side of this scenario.
The Kings acted just fine. Other pilots may have lost their
cool and demanded explanations.
I think , at least, the police should get training to know that
airplanes do not have VINs. And then know how to verify the
data base. All of this could have been avoided with proper
checking of information.

This was a serious warning from El Paso, even though it was
mistaken the sending agency had plenty of credibility. I think our
police professionals responded appropriately. Why didn't this King
fellow if he is such an aviation hot shot demand he get another number
just on the outside chance this would cause confusion.
Had he even checked his own number? Had he carried verification of
this potential error, then he could have remained calm while this was
handed over to the police force for their corroborating verification. King
dropped the ball since he knew he was flying on some questionable ID
numbers. He should have been prepared for this.

How about they tow it to their house (if they have one) and put a boot on it for a month - they'll then have to pay the towing company an amount equal to the impound fee in order to have the boot removed.

First and foremost, driving is not one of our inalienable rights. Many
people think they are, and so they don't renew their expired license,
lose their license, don't pay for insurance - yet own and drive a car
anyway. And that is a crime.
The impound isn't "seizing property". It's removing the item from the
person, that is helping them to commit the crime. (The crime here
being driving on a suspended license or driving while unlicensed.)
Plus it's further not "seizing" because after a period of time the
property is returned to the owner.
If you allow a friend to drive your car and you don't ask about their
license or insurance, then shame on you and the consequences are
yours to live with. Pleading ignorance doesn't get you out of the
situation or give you a free pass.

Targeting or profiling for unlicensed drivers will increase the unprovoked traffic stops for innocent drivers who just happen to fit the profile. That's what's wrong with that.
Has anyone thought of the OWNER of the car? What if you loaned a friend a car not knowing their license was expired (sometimes even they might not know, rare but it happens). Should your car be impounded? and can you get it back just by paying all the fees?
I recall a friend getting a ticket for DWL - all you had to do was show that you had one, and the ticket went away. Now they impound your car?

Anyone who voted for Cushman in this last election was
constitutionally incapable of voting for Schneider. Francisco would
have trumped Schneider handily. It was the true belief in market
principles that made those votes cling to Cushman, against all odds.
They never would have gone to Schneider. Anyone counting votes
knew that. It would have been 11,246 for Francisco and 10,254 for
Scheider if Cushman had not been in the race. Schneider needs to
govern as if she got this message. But she didn't. Instead she sides
with her left-over fellow progressives for one last chance to stick it to
the voters who clearly did not want her.

I would be interested in the other half of the story. It does not say how the verbal altercation started, how it evolved into a physical altercation, whether or not the "victim" was ok or sustained serious injury, or even the charges for which the 3 suspects were arrested on. I know the aceves family, and i know hes a trouble maker. I also know his mother is NOT- even to those who dont know this family im sure it is a little surprising to read that the mother got in on the action, which makes me even more curious about the moments leading up to the altercation. Seems like the victim had a pretty good account of what happened, minus these details. Perhaps he's leaving out what started the "fracas" because he played a role? how does one obtain mug shots without being able to obtain info on charges filed?

The irony always to recognize is those hurling the accusation of
greed are in fact greedy themselves, because they want something
for nothing. Since when do only they get to determine the fair market
value for goods and service and you who are providing them, do
not.
They want something for nothing and in my mind that is greedy. Or
as the new buzz word is, they feel entitled to get something for
nothing. But they don't see themselves as greedy. Nope, it is easier
to play to their version of the sympathy card, which can still sucker
in too many people who should know better to complain along with
them.
Watch out how this word will get twisted this election cycle when
public employees will get accused for being greedy, and they will
hurl back it was Wall street or corporate fat cats who got greedy,
not them. You will just have to sort through all of this to see who
really is greedy, and vote accordingly.

Congrats to KEYT for actually reporting the news! But as I
said in another thread, "if it bleeds, it leads" is still their
motto. Perhaps it is true that EdHat is influencing how they
do their job! Yeah!
But the countless other beatings, assaults, robberies do not
get on the air. Gotta have time to tell us about the low
clouds and fog a half dozen times during the 30 minute
newscast.
And perhaps I am wrong about the ability of EdHat
supports to affect change.. If the folks who read and post
here actually get on their phones and call in incidents and
write letters to the mayor and police chief, maybe WE can
change the way things are done around this town. It's good
to know that "those in high places" might be reading these
posts, and that the EdHat community is increasingly aware
of what's going on, but it still requires taking it to the next
step to affect change. Call and write every time you
witness illegal or potentially dangerous situations.

102350P- I fully agree that we should be enforcing immigration laws at all points possible including local police stops. I just think that after the citation has been issued, seizing property (which might not even be their own) is not needed. Sure, its an extra deterent but why not just increase the citation amount. I think it has to do a lot with the unfair contract between the tow companies and the PD.

If we can't play the race card, Pueblo and its friends would have to argue the facts and law instead. Clearly for them, that approach is not effective.
Besides seizing property and impounding the vehicle, and not enforcing immigration laws if applicable, just what other incentive would work to stop an unlicensed driver from more driving again when that unlicensed, uninsured driver has no other form of identification and lives in the underground economy off the grid?

My adopted dog had an intestinal blockage in the months right after we got him. He chewed up and swallowed half a pillowcase during the night. Thank GOD we had pet insurance otherwise I don't know what we would have done. I highly recommend this to all pet owners (although I realize this doesn't help the original poster right now) - we pay $19 a month through ASPCA and it usually covers at least half of any illness/injury bills. It's a lifesaver.
I take my dog to La Cumbre Animal Hospital and they are amazing. All of the doctors there are fantastic. My neighbor who recommended them to me said that they had let him do a payment plan when his dog was ill, so it's worth asking them about.
If the owner set up a donation fund, I would contribute what I could. I love my pet like a member of my family and I would be devastated if something happened to him, so I would be happy to help someone else to save their companion.

It is a little known clairvoyant fact that everyone who voted for Cushman would have voted for Francisco instead to be mayor.
Obviously the last election was a fraud because more than two candidates qualified for the mayoral election.
Also, it is a little known clairvoyant fact that Harriet Miller simply could wave her judgmental finger and all those little gun-toting hoodlums would run away, say their prayers, do their algebra homework, and go to bed at 10 pm.

Yes exactly, what was a 16 year old out on the streets alone at 2
am. Where is the voice of moral authority from our mayor on any of
this rash of violence lately on our streets. Harriet Miller would have
been knocking heads and holding town halls by now.
But our moral relativity mayor is MIA. No wonder she only got a
minority of SB votes in the last election with the majority of the
conservative voices unfortunately splitting their votes that allowed
her to squeak through with less than a mandate for her ineffective
kumbiyah leadership style.
We have gone too long without a strong leadership voice in this
town setting community standards and sending the message about
what is expected when you live in this town.
All we have now is this growing fear, polarization and a vacuum that
is allowing the lowest common denominator of community values
set the agenda for the rest of us by default.

There is no truth to the often repeated statement kids in this town go
bad because their parents are working two jobs to keep a roof over
their heads in this town and they can't watch what their kids do.
That statement smacks more of class envy than anything else.
This oft-repeated excuse is a total lie and be very suspicious of
anyone who tries to use this excuse to excuse the inexcusable. If
you can't take care of your kids here and live here at the same time,
then you need to move someplace where you can. And stop trying
to blame this town for making people go bad. That is unacceptable.
Bad kids who choose to do bad things have chosen to take the
consequences for this choice they alone have made for
themselves. Stop excusing these choices or blaming someone else
for the choices these kids make.

Whatever you do, get this dog to a vet immediately, even if you have to pay by borrowing money. An intestinal blockage is a serious issue and can cause death very easily if not treated.
If the dog is showing signs of straining (going to poop but nothing comes out) vomiting or hasn't had a normal poop in 24 hours, the only alternative to save the dog's life is usually surgery.
So even if your friend has to surrender the dog to a rescue....do whatever it takes.

There is no profiling stopping cars at random for drunk, impaired
driver and license checks. Just because it might actually be
working and keeping drunks off the road, or at least out of the
checkpoints does not mean de facto it is now "targeting" anyone
else.
The checkpoints are there for safety and accountability checks that
protect us all, including protection from uninsured drivers. Who has
to pick up the tabs when there is no insurance? We all do because
the mess gets dumped on taxpayers laps.
Keep your values and message clear --- we all deserve to be safe
on our streets and uninsured drivers, unlicensed drivers are just as
much a problem for all of us as the drunks and impaired drivers who

Be pro-active about crime.
If you see graffiti vandalism in progress, call 911. Insist that judges follow the law and sentence convicted graffiti vandals to one year of graffiti removal. Santa Barbara judges should not avoid this state law.
It IS the law. Judges who skirt this law should be exposed. Interviewed. Ousted.

Santa Barbara community standards do not support shooting children
in our streets. We need to do a better job making sure everyone who
lives here understands this is not acceptable behavior when they
choose to live here. We need to show this standard in every word, act

Wow, I've heard people say that hispanic kids go bad because their parents are too busy working to pay attention to them, but I've not heard before of a Mom pulling out the tire iron and joining in the fray. I suppose she's been making excuses for him all her life, and this is what he's become--a mouthy bully that terrorizes a neighborhood and a store parking lot. Hope she's proud.

All neighborhoods in Santa Barbara/Noleta/Goleta are at risk. Guns' bullets go where they want to go, but often the shooter is wild, and the bullets go into homes, or hits a child playing in the yard a block away.
Your cell phones are the tool to fight crime. Report ANYTHING and everything you think is a crime, or might become a crime.
Cell phones are a must, but for lesser crimes (not guns), this Guardian Angels leader does an entertaining video on Citizen's Arrests here:

102179, you are right. The problem today with public employment is
that it now looks so different from private employment. Public job
benefits only go up, while private ones go up and down. Don't let
any tell you this is a problem of "wall street greed" or "corporate fat
cats".
The problems with public employee salaries, benefits, pension plans
and lock on job security are these very things themselves. Too
large and too unaccountable in themselves. They are not the fault of
something else.
Unfortunately public employee unions support the elected officials
who keep giving them the best deals. That is the problem. And
voters who keep voting for this too cozy relationship.

Just wait - there are California condors nesting in the sanctuary above Fillmore. As the numbers grow, who knows? They may be soaring in the hills above Santa Barbara, which is part of their historic range. You want to talk about "dwarfing" other birds? Condors looks like 747s; eagles like Cessnas; crows like hang gliders. Look for big triangular white patches under the wings of the biggest bird in the sky. Only adults have the orange/pink head; the juveniles don't get them until they are around six years old.

Pet insurance is WONDERFUL. Unfortunately, you can't get it after the fact (much like trying to get car insurance after an accident). Insurance for the future is a good call. Only advice I have is call around to vets. See who will consider payment plans. Quite honestly, asking a loaded question like that on here is guaranteed to get responses like this. This happened to me. My license expired and I drove up to a checkpoint. I got no leniency. My wife was home with our two young kids (it was after 11pm), so she could not come down. However, my brother was there, and they wouldn't let him drive my car home. This is a money making racket! I was also lied to by the officer, who said I could get the car back the next day. It took 4 days to get it back, since the towing company bills a full day even for 5 minutes. That's another racket. The car was towed from downtown to Kellogg, racking up the miles.
I could have used a little leniency on this. I am a legal citizen, I only speak English, and I work hard for a living. Screw the police on this one.

Because Pueblo is involved, this obviously is another of their attempts to gain more perks for their Mexican constituents and they want the city police to go along with that because they hope he is sympathetic.
American citizens and legal residents are so so tired of coddling illegal immigrants and giving them exceptions to the law so they take more and more from a society already more generous than any other to accept them.
They are not deported. They are not denied housing or health care or free food paid by the government, all of which are scarce resources that genuine citizens increasingly cannot afford. And now Pueblo and its constituents want a free pass for driving without a license or insurance.
When will this end? Pueblo is creating a backlash all on its own. They apparently are not as smart as their earlier reputation once implied.

Anyone who thinks they are innocent and not guilty can tell it to the Judge like for any other law enforcement action.
Hard to imagine what the defense would be, though. Mistaken identity considering no drivers license or other form of identification?
If these unlicensed drivers do not want to or cannot pay the fine, then they should not commit the crime. Good luck (not really) to Pueblo and its friends defending that.

Google "pet bowel obstruction" and you find much of the same
advice you are hearing here - poor care habits that allowed a pet to
ingest something that clogged up their system, and the admonition if
you can't care for a pet you need to think twice about owning one.
People give up pets all the time when they can't care for them,
which is why we can get pets who need a better home, at the
shelters because their owner cared more about the pet they could
no longer care for, than for themselves.
Something sounds strange about someone who "loses" a home,
husband and son all together and then has a pet who is allowed to
swallow something so large and so foreign as to cause the animal
this acute distress. And now an owner who is beating everyone up
because she cannot get someone to give her something for free?
She needs to give up her pet because she is obviously in a very
precarious situation and should not be allowed to take her pet down
with her.

Stop crime in Santa Barbara by being less enabling in your own
attitudes when it comes to drugs and alcohol because those are the
common denominators of the vast majority of crimes here.
Keep alcohol and drug abuse private inside your own four walls,
except when it spills over into domestic violence, but once drugs and
alcohol leave the privacy of one's own home, it is time for zero
tolerance for their abuse. Just like we did for public smoking. Not in

Or, if a good group of volunteers drove over there, on shifts, with their cell phones, and every time someone "threw a gang sign" or started trouble, boom, a phone call to the Sheriff, who is about 2 minutes away...on the other side of the freeway, near iHop.

Yep Turnpike/Hollister is the neighborhood. 10 years ago things weren't so bad there but over the last 5 years things have gotten out of hand.
Cops have known this guy for many years. I'm sure when they got a description of the group, they knew right where to look.
A stint in jail will not change this guys behavior. This person needs an education, a job and at least one person to love him. It takes all 3 to be happy and productive. Sadly somehow this guy missed all 3 boats. Fortunately boats arrive daily and there is always the possibility of change. People who play still do win the lottery even with tremendous odds against them. Hopefully this POS will figure it our someday. Sooner rather than later would be ideal.

In b&w, the style reminds me of ones from the 40's or 50's.

Maybe if it's the person's first time for being stopped for a license
infraction I might agree with some leniency but if they are a repeat
offender, I think the car should definitely be impounded.

Who is to say that this kind of stuff hasn't been going on for the past 30 years, and the only reason we know about it now is because we have an eastside recluse glued to his scanner and a website willing to print everything he hears?

Don't know where I am on this one. A guy I know from the construction world needed work, and I set him up with some labor work at a friend's house. I gave him a bunch of my tools to do the work, and on the way back that day, he was stopped for a VERY minor traffic issue, (like going 1mph through a stop). Unknown to me, he was driving without a license, and luckily he called in time for me to race down there to get the tools, or who knows what would have happened to them. I don't think the impound yard would have given them back to me without a problem.
I believe he said the fine to get his truck back was in the thousands of dollars, (they keep the vehicle for a minimum number of days, perhaps to require the driver to resolve the infraction before releasing it). Quite an expensive lesson for him!

Nipomo was clear and "warm" at 55 degrees at 5 a.m. Then at 6, a thin fog layer rolled in, indicating onshore flow. Now the fog is burning off early (usually 10 or 11, so it looks like offshores have won for now. may be warm or warmer than yesterday which was in the high 70's low 80's. No wind or breeze from the east yet. John Lindsey @ Diablo Canyon called for cooler temps today than yesterday, we'll see.
DON'T forget that when offshore winds are strong, there are ususally RIPTIDES at the south-facing beaches.

Whatever happened to that unlicensed driver that ran down a pedestrian in a crosswalk a few months ago. I never heard about his killer being charged.

102195 - re having the Guardian Angels come to SB to be a show of non tolerance for the street thugs, ABSOLUTELY!
They are all over cities like Chicago, NY, Boston and it's very calm when they're present. The local PD's have a very good rapport with them and the citizens feel safe for a change.
Why not?!

I suggest that we all email this story to five people who can make a difference and join in the conversation. It could be folks you know who read the NP or listen to 1290am and are in the dark about the extent of the gang activity. Many have a vested interest in our community but are in the dark as to the level of violence and crime in our city.
By the way, I doubt that it is only 2-3 dozen folks in town that read Edhat. More like thousands of folks who know much more about what's going on than most.

I wish I had a good suggestion to offer. We take our pets to White's, and the veterinarians there are great, but their general policy is to expect payment at the time of service. I don't know what the new CARE is like, but the old one also wanted their money on the spot or they wouldn't provide treatment.
I know full well how sometimes our animal companions may be the only reason we have to keep going. We often need them most when times are hardest. My cats were the only constants in my life at a time when I'd lost nearly everything else, back when I had to borrow gasoline money just to get to work. There were many times when knowing that I was the only one who cared for my feline friends was the one and only thing that kept me going.
I hate how any request for help on this board seems to attract nasty, compassionless, hurtful, unhelpful comments. It often makes me think of dropping my Edhat subscription.
I truly hope you find the help you need for your dog, and soon. And I'm sorry about the curmudgeons and trolls. Maybe they just haven't been in your shoes yet.

There is no other job that pays more than a small animal vet. It is so lucrative for these vets. It just amazes me that when I have to take my cat or dog to the vet that it usually costs me twice or three times as much if I went to my doctor for a similar problem. Its called GREED.
I would adopt many more animals from the pound if some smart vet figured out that they could increase their customers base by lowering their fees. Its ridiculous what they charge and get away with. I wish the pound or similar organization offered reasonable fees, not what they can get away with but something that is reasonable.
