I know where this is! It's a St. George property! Our friends still live there (hopefully not for long.)

St. George has a bunch of clueless UCSB students ruining ... I mean running his "property management". These kids will end up costing the company in damaged property and lawsuits.

We used to live in an apartment owned by St. George. We moved because the "property manager" is rude, does not take care of problems, only works 4 hours per day, sends these sudden demands (they tried this trash thing last year giving everyone 2 days to get their own trash!), they don't even give out a phone number in fear of a tenant actually calling. We had raw sewage backing up into the bathtub and didn't get a call-back for 4 days! They then blamed us for a problem that we found out the previous tenants also had.

The owner seems like a nice guy. The problem is the people he has hired to manage his properties have no clue, don't respond to problems, and the result will be lawsuits. Good luck.

Wow! I am often amazed at the things that get people in this town frothing at the mouth. RVs seem to be one of them. I own what could be called an RV (Recreational Vehicle) and I own a home and I park my RV in my driveway. I never realized that I was considered such a low life by a somewhat unhinged segment of our community. So do we want to ban anyone traveling in an RV from coming and spending their money here? That sounds like a good idea. Am I not going to be allowed to go park my camper at Shoreline Park to watch the sunset? If someone in an RV is creating a problem, deal with it. Don't try to punish everyone because of it.

I'm just wondering why the City staff so hates the property tax paying residents of this city. There is something wrong, when night after night there is an RV that pulls up in front of my house, blocking my views for a free parking spot for the night. I'm really starting to get resentful that I have to pay the property taxes that I do when I see all the freeloaders parking their RVs on the streets.

RV parking should be banned on all of our streets.

Condo Termites

2013-05-22 10:48 AM

If the OP's HOA doesn't have the funds or the smarts to coordinate a tenting, then your HOA is 100% incompetent. If I was a condo owner in that complex, I would threaten the HOA with a huge lawsuit. Perhaps then the morons who run the show there will jump to action.

BTW I live in the SB Highlands, a condo/townhouse complex of over 40 separate buildings comprising several hundred individual units. The entire Highlands was tented a few years ago. It was a huge exercise, but they had little trouble coordinating the building evacuations with the help of the tenting company. I'm sure it was expensive, but guess what? That's what HOA fees are for.

Also, if you think your fees are already high enough, you might consider that the HOA leaders are stealing the money. Happens all the time.

Wow.. after looking at the discussions on such a simple subject, it is blatantly obvious some of the core problems with our country. One side always wants to turn it into an "emotional" discussion instead of dealing with the obvious facts of HUMAN WASTE in our streets and creeks. Pretty pathetic. Obvious solutions: We can probably all agree that the RV situation is not going away. Why not install a local RV Dump Station and actively direct the local homeless to use it? This encouragement can be done via many of the local non-profits and neighborhood groups that are involved in this. Atleast, we can help prevent the dumping.

If there was a market for a low-cost RV park on the outskirts of this city, it would have already been built.

What RV squatters are demanding is a subsidized government operation using tax dollars to confer a benefit for only a few self-selected people, while sending the bills to the rest of the people. Stop thinking this way.

If you insist on living in an RV, go to any of the official RV parks up and down this state and do it legally, and on your own dime. Not ours.

If you are forced to live in an RV because of job loss, etc. then the RV belongs in a campground. Our streets are not campgrounds. Nor are our homes. RVs are supposed to be parked behind solid fences if you have one on your property. If you can't store it according to the regulations, then it belongs in a storage lot. Period. If you can't afford storage, you should not have gotten an RV in the first place. Zoning is very specific; single family residential; higher density residential. It never says 'rv parking lot'.

Grey water doesn't belong in our storm drains and ocean either, so this is a poor defense. And RVs should not be used on any city's streets. They come with the obligation of renting a proper space with hook-ups and dump stations and properly maintaining the equipment. Those who use RVs as residences on city streets impact the communities they're in without contributing to the tax base. They should be regulated because, clearly, if they're not liberties will be abused.

I live in a townhome with a shared wall. Our side had termites, my neighbor's side did not, so tenting was not an option. I called several pest companies for quotes. Hydrex can inject Termidor foam into all of the perimeter for walls. Orkin or Terminex offer the same service but they will only treat the affected wall(s) whereas Hydrex does all of the perimeter walls. We went with Hydrex and the termite problem has been eliminated for several years now. We paid about $1,000 but your house could be more or less depending on size.

Trashy Landlord

2013-05-22 10:26 AM

There are all kinds of rules about trash removal and illegal dumping. Yes, if tenants leave trash on the ground or uncollected, the landlord gets cited. Cf. Dario Pini, many times over.

By the way Marborg will come up the driveway at a single family residence to empty cans, at least within the city of SB. That's what we do at my house. SFRs have the option of smaller cans with no wheels for "backyard pickup" (which means up the driveway within 100 feet of the street) or larger cans with wheels which we have to roll out to the curb on trash day.

If I just read the city's trash collection web page correctly, Marborg will not do curbside for a multi-unit, will only do driveway pickup (cans or dumpsters) and the landlord is required to set up the service, not the tenants.

I really disagree with the majority of you on this issue. The economy (in collusion with lazy, stupid, or inept politicians) has kicked many working people to the curb. For long time residents, I'd much rather they live in an RV here and try to get back on their feet, than be kicked out of town too. Far more of us fall into that category than you'd like to know. Yes, there are problem RV dwellers, but deal with them on an individual basis. Create RV parking areas on the outskirts of town, like a trailer park, and reasonably priced. Limit them to people who can show years of local residency.

My Mom & Dad's former RV was used by a family getting back on its feet (after Mom & Dad could no longer travel in it due to their ages). It had been affordable travel for them, even though they were regularly hassled about it being parked on the street in front of their house (before the City of Goleta made it illegal to do that.) Try to limit your prejudices to the truly lazy, and don't include the unfortunate in your judgment.

I have a problem with people parking their houses all over the place. I'm trying to enjoy SB, and all this private property is ruining the area. Restricted to public streets, I am forced to move about in right angles, trying to avoid being hit by tanks piloted by selfish people on their way to or from their private estates. Talk about being boxed in!

I propose we all live in RVs, park together in one big parking lot (new neighbors every night!), and designate the rest open space for the enjoyment of all! Or, if that is too far-fetched, how about a 72 hour limit on parking houses in one spot... keep them moving.

There are many responsible RV dwellers that don't mess things up and try to stay out of everyone's way. Here is a moderate solution: the city has a night time ( 7pm.-6am) RV Permit parking program, but no designated place to go during the day. Create a designated RV parking area for the Day time and require all first time Permitted Occupants ( both day & night ) to prove that they have a Work and or Residency history in SB. county. That would leave the trouble making "Drifter" RV's the only ones left on the street to be delt with.

Many cities ban RV parking on their streets. Residential RV use shall be strictly limited to regulated RV camps.

Anyone claiming they need to live in their RV 'temporarily" is free to use the official RV parks located in this area. There is one north of Ventura, well within a normal commute distance for many Santa Barbara workers.

Zero tolerance for all RV street parking on our streets. ACLU does not run our city; we do.

You appeal those petty local decisions by our uber-liberal local judges until you get a state supreme court ruling affecting all cities up and down this state. It is money well-spent cleaning up this town while other towns get off banning RV's with no consequences.

Naturally, they all gravitate here. Again, an abuse of our town perpetrated by prior city councils and now we have their messes to clean up while they walked away after term limits, leaving this behind. Time to replace Wiley with a city attorney who has the chops to deal with this.

John- you're bringing back some great memories of my rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. One of our stops was the Little Colorado where we shot the mini rapids on our bums! Its a beautiful spot and the water is much warmer than the 50 degree big Colorado. Some people say looking down into the Grand Canyon is something that doesn't disappoint, but I say the only real way to see the Grand Canyon is floating down the Colorado River. It's something you'll never forget!

Last time i was in SLO, i saw signs for no RV parking within city limits. Didn't Goleta just pass something similar, where residents can get a permit if they need to park on the street for longer than 72 hours? SB needs to quit worrying about what might happen, and at least try for an RV ban.

If you are out of work and live in an RV(and a law abiding citizen), go pay your camping fees at carp state beach, refugio, el cap, etc.. just like the rest of us have to!

RV's being used as residence on the public streets are a pain for many reasons.
The vast majority, 90% or so, look terrible and take up parking. That's enough reason right there. Not to mention some leak sewage/grey water, sell/do drugs, prostitution, and generally don't contribute anything positive to the area. The 1 or 2% that are honestly using an RV as a temporary means to rebound from tough times I have no problem with. I understand tough times as everyone should and if you don't get prepared it will come in some form some day. Some cities are cross-training their firefighters and police so that if there aren't any fires, the FFs can do police work and stay busy. They have a lot of downtime. Whatever the solution is, it's clear we can't afford the status quo for too much longer. Unless we like paying more taxes.....

The city tried an RV ban in 2000. ACLU brought a lawsuit against it, and Judge Denise Bellefleur overturned it on the grounds that it unfairly targets the homeless. Sometimes it is less about our Silly Council and more that the courts continually rule against us on these kinds of things. One wonders why we couldn't create a pay RV park, with dumping stations, and force everyone to use that. But then the ACLU and homeless would protest that too, probably. They seem to have this attitude that any transient that shows up in your jurisdiction is entitled to all kinds of rights citizens don't have.

If you study newspress photos by Mike Eliason, you will see that in many accidents he crops the shots to be tasteful, many times eliminating the faces and tells the story in an artful way. I think a closeup of the front of the car with the pole has much more impact to what happened. If I were the photo editor on this job that is the image I would use. The rest are cluttered with too much going on. Less is more. Thank God the man who removed the child did not paralyze the child. Earl Warren Meeting Notice

2013-05-22 08:19 AM

EWS claims they tested the decibels on site and they were "legal". By whose standards? This is a state agency and apparently needs to be self-supporting.

Therefore, they rent out the premises for these concerts for their own financial benefits, which show they have no concern for impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods.

Das Williams and Hannah-Beth Jackson need to intervene here, but for them silence has been golden -- their own and the heck with their broad swath of constituents increasingly affected by this public nuisance.

Those affected need to show up and just introduce yourself, say what part of town you live in, that you could hear the noise and that it was at unacceptable levels.

The EWS board of directors need to hear the range of their noise pollution and its direct impacts well beyond the confines of the show grounds itself.

You don't need to say anything more. Just those few sentences at the beginning of the public comment portion of the meeting.

I have a coworker that just moved to sb, he's living in his rv with his wife. He's a great guy and respects the fact that he's in an rv and has to take care of his wastes.

Although I agree rv's can be annoying in certain areas. But thinking about it, I don't think they need to be banned city wide. There has to be an area that doesnt impact residents or traffic. And I don't mean a gypsie camp at the edge of town. Near parks maybe.

And he even understands there are defiantly problem rv people around, but you can't pigeon hole everyone into that category. We all have neighbors that are about as much of a pain in the ass, but we can't ban them.

I was so outraged when I heard this on the radio news this morning, even more outraged knowing it was an aquaintance. You always hear about awful stories where people jump to the "bad mother" claim and find it a somewhat unfair assumption, but I think saying that in this case is not an assumption. I could say plenty of things under this anonymous handle... but its not worth the time. I just want to say that I hope this is a lesson to many moms, especially her friends that are ALSO young mothers and tend to act similiar to her, to put your childs safety before yours! You want to go out drinking? Fine, but find a babysitter!! I hope she does not get let off easy and that her son goes to an ATTENTIVE family unlike his parents.

@058 apple products are designed far better than most computersand provide far more value per dollar, in my experience, as an IT manager at a design firm with both macs and pcs. I personally own a Sony laptop(happy till the hard drive failed after three years), three Mac towers(one has been running non stop since 1997, thats right, 16 plus years, another is mothballed, older still, and still runs, the third a Mac clone I'm keeping for posterity or as collectors item, running also). So the 2k I spent on the one works out to a few bucks a year. Or a $700 PC that craps out in a couple years, intermittent OS glitches, constant updates and threats to contend with, and the hassle of regularly (every 2years) replacing pc's and migrating software. Lifecycle costs don't even come close.

There is NO "theory" involved in this conspiracy - the Coast Guard and Customs/ICE have access to drones that scan 25 square miles in one "blink" - this is forward looking infrared technology and it would be absolutely impossible for ANY powered craft to escape detection (even the supposedly invisible panga!).

The technology is available, so why are these boats being ALLOWED to come all the way up here? (If that's what's really happening.)

And if these pangas are really such a problem, why don't they ever seem to make the network TV news like ABC, CBS, CNN etc.? (Most likely because the Coast Guard isn't going to take the fall just so Sheriff Brown can scam enough money to buy a little navy of inflatable boats, that's why!)

In a civil society, one doesn't burden and annoy one's neighbors intentionally. Neighbors should not need to "show up en masse" to request a fix to a problem that has been made abundantly clear, with a clear solution: do not turn up the volume to the point where it is heard throughout the city. The concert goers are getting their money's worth even at much reduced volumes and will have no trouble hearing the music.

Wow, unreal! I am totally disgusted that they would take a 3 year old drinking with them. Also concerned that Harry's staff didn't call the police earlier and do something to prevent them from getting in a car with the child. I do believe that we are a village and that we all need to watch out better for kids. If you see a child in danger or being abused, which this WAS, you need to be brave and err on the side of caution, call the police, let them decide if the kid is in danger or not, help prevent injuries to innocent babies like the ones that this one sustained :( The mom for sure should never have custody again in my opinion but hopefully also this situation will help Harry's to create a procedure for these types of situations and they can be preventative in the future, and other local restaurants too. Making money is good but so is being responsible about preventing disaster. Harry's drinks ARE known for being strong, kinda like Joe's.
