City Council Panhandling Meeting

2014-10-20 09:03 PM

And if you do not like Snopes, here is Factcheck .org.

Q: Has the Obama administration started a program to use "taxpayer money" to give free cell phones to welfare recipients?

A: No. Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it.

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/

Repeat - there is no such thing as an Obama-phone, because the program is funded by telecom companies NOT by taxes and the President has NOTHING to do with it.

How many gullible people does it take to swallow propaganda hook, line and sinker.

City Council Panhandling Meeting

2014-10-20 08:51 PM

We can set up a panhandling zone, officially sanctioned. Bums line up along a certain section of sidewalk at a certain time with a hat, bucket, whatnot in front of them. The public walks by and drops whatever they want into any hat or not as they please. Sort of like a circus attraction. The only time panhandling is allowed is at these sanctioned events, held three times a week at certain locations TBA.

Namely, in front of YOUR square, not mine!

Or we could set up a refugee zone outside the city limits, tents and so on. Set up a chuck wagon at one end, medical tent at the other.

Because trying to regulate them isn't working.

806 - I couldn't agree more. Encores have become a mechanical, meaningless, perfunctory ritual, with the spontaneity of traffic school.

OK, Rant time.

Worse, imho, are: (a) the rows of glowing phones held at head height, (b) "audience" members loudly chatting (c) drunks, and (d) the person(s) next to you who spend the entire show texting.

Don't people pay those high ticket prices to enjoy *music*? I guess not - most are too busy fiddling with hand-held digital devices to engage with the performer(s).

Listening to live music is an *active* pursuit - it requires a little effort on the part of the "audient" to get one's money's worth. So, next show - put the phone away, please! You will be amazed at the liberation from digital bondage, and if the band is great, you will actually witness greatness, not possible when engaged in "phone-y-ness". Be in the moment!

Edhat's General Election Poll

904: Edhat used to be primarily South Coast people but look at the statistics on some of our 'new' friends. One contributor joined in August and has had 338 comments, mostly about Measure P. I would say 'Get a life" OR are you collecting a pay check for doing this? I think the latter is what's happening. Greka just applied for steam injection wells. And we all know their record. The Chamberlins and Firestones will allow steam injection on their existing oil fields in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Lompoc Valley aquifers are directly under the FM steam wells and hundreds are in the 'pipeline'. Carpinteria? Big "No on P signs" on the Gaviota Coast? It will happen in all these locations. Veneco in Goleta? Who knows. Now is the time to stop it. No on P, Katcho, and Mitchum signs are prolific throughout the No. County.

I chose not to vaccinate my child against chicken pox or flu, but did do the other childhood vaccines because they stop the disease most of the time. She got chicken pox from a vaccinated child at school. I knew that it was a possibility, and that I could live with her getting either chicken pox or the flu because neither of those "vaccines" work all the time. (and rarely are those illnesses deadly). But, parents who knowingly choose to not vaccinate children against preventable diseases that are deadly...well they are entitled folks who are probably now expecting the doctors (that they ignored the recommendations from) to "fix" their children.

City Council Panhandling Meeting

2014-10-20 06:53 PM

Another malicious myth, thus being another smearing cheap shot - the Obama-phone.

"From that basic framework, rumors like the ones encapsulated in the Examples cited above have circulated, claiming that "the Obama administration created a program to give free cell phones paid for by taxpayer money to welfare recipients."

All the elements of such statements are erroneous or exaggerated:

The Lifeline program originated in 1984, during the administration of Ronald Reagan; it was expanded in 1996, during the administration of Bill Clinton; and its first cellular provider service (SafeLink Wireless) was launched by TracFone in 2008, during the administration of George W. Bush. All of these milestones were passed prior to the advent of the Obama administration.

The Lifeline program only covers monthly discounts on landline or wireless telephone service for eligible consumers. It does not pay cellular companies to provide free cell phones to consumers, although some cellular service providers choose to offer that benefit to their Lifeline customers.

We've already been down this road. We hire a consultant for $200k+ for a feasibility study, then we pass an ordinance, the PD doesn't enforce it, we complain, the PD does a token enforcement exercise to appease people, some bum calls the ACLU from his Obama-phone, some bottom-feeding ACLU rookie attorney trying to make a name for himself sues the city, the city pays a salary to someone to litigate it for a while, then the city caves and settles. The city then pays the ACLU "costs" per the settlement. Then we're back to square one, broke, and City College will then have to shove another bond down our throats.

2014-10-20 06:25 PM

P is not just about fracking. More important are steam injection and acidizing, also highly water-dependent enhanced recovery methods. Imagine hundreds or thousands of new wells and mechanical installations to support them, and water to feed them. That would be a disaster for both the water and the air. Yes, it would mean a few short-term jobs and some royalties, but it would also be the end of Santa Barbara County as we have known it. Many worshipers of the gods of progress and growth will say that's a very good thing. Vineyards replaced ranching and farming, after all; maybe the oil patch should displace some vineyards. But I devoutly hope that's not the case, and that courageous conservation wins over threats and exploitation.

Because, It wasnt available at the time of the article being posted!

Folks, Measure P is bad. I'm a south coast typically liberal Dem, who has seen Gasland and Gasland II. I agree we should ban fracking, but not via Measure P, which is very badly written, and will effectively kill-off all oil production in the county. It will also lead to very significant litigation against the county, and cost us taxpayers a LOT of money in legal fees.

Let's vote NO on P, then re-group to put in place a ban of only fracking. We can do this. In fact, the state may impose a fracking ban before we even need to at a local level.

The last time it happened around here was Proposition 37, the purpose of which was to inform the public, via labeling, whether the food they were purchasing was contaminated with genetically modified organisms (GMO). The biotech industry (Monsanto et al) pumped $10s of millions into their campaign of lies and fear mongering, and defeated this vital piece of public safety legislation.

The Measure P campaign of disinformation is similarly all about profit maximization for a special interest group - while the health and wellbeing of the general population ends up at the bottom of the pecking order. Yet again.

Barking Dog Woes

2014-10-20 05:24 PM

I have been contacted by Animal Control because a neighbor in the next block heard the incredibly loud dog next door to me, who barks incessantly and is hard to see (he is behind a fence) and my dogs were incorrectly identified as the problem barkers. I asked the officer if she was aware that the dog next door has an amazingly loud bark and never stops barking when left alone. She said it didn't matter. The complaining party drove around the neighborhood looking for the source of the barking and saw my dogs in the front yard and identified them as the source of the noise. What a hassle. Now my dogs are locked inside all day. Good news is that the last complaint was at a time my dogs were in the house, now I am doubly positive where the source of the noise is coming from. I am recording and videoing the dog next door as proof and documenting times I hear him going off.

Edhat's General Election Poll

2014-10-20 04:47 PM

As stated earlier, M-P is a tough decision for knowledgeable people.
There is a possibility that some fracking chemicals could get into the groundwater where and if it is used. In order to make an informed decision, one would need to know how groundwater is pumped and used in our county, how much of it is actually mixed with our drinking water, what other processes also have the potential to pollute groundwater, at what depth is our useable groundwater extracted and at what depth does fracking inject their chemicals. Then one would need to run a risk/benefit calculation on worst case scenarios for both a fracking free-for-all vs a fracking ban...There is more to it, really, than any layman could possibly know and vote on.
For instance, the largest use of fresh water here or anywhere in the world is NOT drinking, NOT agriculture, but rather waste elimination (or did you think when you flush your toilet that your feces is magically transported to another dimension? ;) Waste elimination actually requires a continuously running river of fresh water under every home and office building to a processing plant...where...it could contaminate groundwater and give everyone cholera....

Measure P is a tough decision, I have done the calcs and know a bit about the risk/benefit and will be voting "No" on P. But I dont hold it against anyone who supports the measure.

Whooping Cough Cases Increase

2014-10-20 04:39 PM

One of our children was "partially vaccinated" 24 years ago. Because she cried non-stop for 36 hours following the first dose at 2 month of age, our pediatrician said she should not have further doses due to high risk of mental retardation.

At age 8 she and I both contracted whooping cough. I pulled every muscle in my torso and cracked a rib. The most painful thing I have endured (and I've had pain!) because every inhalation was excruciating once I did crack that rib. And the coughing was exhausting. We both ended up on rescue inhalers for several years after the illness.

I don't with this illness on anyone, and I can see how very young children could die from Pertussis. I am not a fan of big Pharma, but if I were deciding to vaccinate or not today, I would def. have our kids vaccinated.

I'm wondering if I need to be re-vaccinated, some 16 years later...

New residences means more people. Other people will move into the residences of the people that get the apts. So it is misleading to suggest there will be no net gain in population or water use.

That item about less need for personal autos means that they don't have enough parking onsite. So their cars will be added to on street parking in the area.

The 6 seniors that get the apartments will be winners. The rest of the people desperate for affordable housing will be losers.

Those of us who have suffered the loss of many or had many horrible life experiences go straight to anger and guilt. We all wish we could we could have done something differently before the death. Very nice pics.

It was a really good show musically, vocally and visually. They played most all their hits along with some more obscure numbers. The opening artist Mutlu, was also very talented and entertaining. The one complaint is with H & O leaving the stage two times at the end of the show and the audience having to applaud & cheer to "get them to come back" for two encore songs. Then they act surprised by the audience's desire to have them return.
It would be nice to see this ritual of forced adulation be retired. The artist should already know that they are appreciated by the audience from the positive response they received throughout the show without needing their huge egos stroked again at the end.

Whooping Cough Cases Increase

Wow, 72% of the school's student body not vaccinated. That is scary. I hope those 4 kids who are sick get over this quickly and I hope they don't infect their siblings (particularly infants) or anyone else.

I had whooping cough in the summer of 2010. I caught it from one of my students in my junior high classroom. It was exhausting to cough uncontrollably for three months.

My friend caught chickenpox from a child in line in front of her at the grocery store. As an adult in her 40's, this was dangerous. She had a horrible case and was simply miserable. She did not touch the child and was only standing there for 5 minutes, yet that is all it took. It was just wrong. That mother should not have had her kids out in public while the 3 or 4 year old was having active chicken pox!

When our now 13 yr old daughter was vaccinated, we specifically asked for preservative and Thimerosal (sp?) free vaccines. No problem. It was as simple as that. I do not understand the no vaccine contingent when they have alternatives available. I feel it is unconscionable to expose so many people to these preventable diseases for no reason.

I agree with the No Vaccines = No School Attendance idea. Its time has come.

What many poorly educated adults fail to understand is, the crews of Columbus did not have active disease when they landed on this continent. They spread diseases because they were carriers of diseases we can now vaccinate against.

Those who Vote No on P, 776, fail to read the complete information available to them and take chances. None of this has anything to do with being a "hippy." Those who fail to vaccinate should be required to watch a documentary on the full effects of the diseases they are not afraid of letting their children becoming infected with for life. They could claim ignorance as their only defense.. and yes we would all agree that they ARE ignorant.. but since it has happened too many times to even claim ignorance.. So, I guess stupidity really is the only accurate defense.

Survivor's guilt is normal. but don't let it overwhelm you. You have remained behind for a reason, and will join her someday. Keep some of her belongings close, even if it hurts now. I still have a plastic cup that my best friend left in my house, and it has been over thirty years since she died. I'm so glad I hung on to it all these years, It's just a silly plastic Christmas cup, but now it brings me solace when I see it and think of our friendship.

there are more people in the water now so the reports have gone up as well. We need the sharks to keep the seal population in check. Sharks have been around for millions of years and they need to be protected in order to keep the eco system in check. I have seen 4 white sharks in 30 years of surfing but I know I am part of the food chain every time I enter the ocean. There are just certain spots I avoid for instance The Lost Coast of Norcal.. Really smoking, drunk driving, bee stings, or texting while driving kills way more people than sharks ever will.

Living with Wolves: National Geogra...

2014-10-20 01:41 PM

Glad you are finding my report helpful! I left out perhaps the most important part:

It turns out reintroducing wolves have many ecosystem benefits that were not obvious until they were reintroduced.

One example: The number of trout increased. Why?

When wolves were eradicated, elk came to the water areas and grazed on the shade plants. This overheated the water for the trout.

There are many other examples of how this apex species makes a difference in allowing other species to thrive.

Best wishes,
Robert

Maybe parents now are just a little to young to have known the people in the generation that went though childhood before the polio vaccine. Growing up, I knew several middle-aged adults in wheelchairs because of polio. And those were the ones who survived. I would never consider not vaccinating my kids against a potentially deadly disease.

Perhaps genealogy should catch on again as a fad, so that these parents can discover how many of their great aunts and great uncles died in childhood to diseases we now vaccinate against.

I don't think its a question of training them. You can modify their behavior by with a bark collar using shock or scent, but a dog that barks when it is outside will still be bored or anxious when it is outside.

This is one of the things you should check for when you adopt a dog. If you don't have a good solution for the problem then adopt a different dog.

I have a young niece who can't get many vaccines. She had Guillain Barre and almost died when she was 3. She's now 8. Others not vaccinating their children literally puts her life at risk.

The anti-science/ anti-educated people in our communities are proliferating, and it both concerns and saddens me. In the past, a broad general K-12 education in English, math, the sciences, history, and social studies used to ensure a fairly educated populace. Either the classes are being dumbed down, or people aren't connecting the dots, or something else unfortunate is going on.

My now-deceased, ironic, but genius IQ Dad used to assert that the intelligence of the population was a constant, but with increasing population, the average intelligence was plummeting. I despair that he may have been right.

If vaccines were a problem our whole population would have autism and whatever else they claim vaccines cause. There should be some law that if your kid gets sick they hav ea cause of action against you to be filed by a guardian ad litem or something of the sort. Or if someone's baby gets sick they can sue you. So so selfish and irresponsible to put your unfounded ridiculous beliefs ahead of your children's health and safety!!! I guess we've been able to see this coming since the anti vaccine hoax frightened a generation of parents about 20 years ago. My father was a surgeon... he predicted a resurgence in the childhood diseases his generation worked so hard to eliminate, and tried to talk his grandchildren out of the strange beliefs and superstitions that led them to decide against inoculations for their own children. As fate would have it both my Father and I contacted pertussis ( in San Diego county) in 2010, and he died from the devastating effects of the disease about six months later. If you haven't had a booster or your children haven't been vaccinated no more talk. Just do it.

Instead of the knee-jerk demand that all children be vaccinated, a more reasonable approach would be to make the Waldorf school 100% unvaccinated - then we could prove once and for all whether there's any real evidence to support the claim that vaccines provide "herd immunity'' - or any immunity at all.

Parents should have the right to refuse vaccines because if their child is injured by one, the vaccine manufacturers and members of the medical profession cannot be held liable - no one should be forced to do something that could harm their child when no one else can be held responsible.

As for the claim that parents who choose not vaccinate are uninformed, surveys show that they are overwhelmingly college educated and earn more than $75,000 per year.

I understand the concern that parents have about vaccinating their children due to the controversy about vaccines causing autism etc., but as a previous poster stated the potential health risks of not vaccinating far outweigh the risks of vaccinating.

We also have the issue of many undocumented people in this country, including SB, that may lack vaccinations and may be carriers of some of these diseases.

I struggled with this decision when my son was an infant, but after weighing the risks decided to vaccinate. I am glad I did, not only for his sake, but the sake of the other children he came into contact with.

Wow, here we go again with the demand that everyone must be vaccinated.

Am I the only one who noticed that although Public Health mentions that even vaccinated children can catch whooping cough, the department doesn't bother to tell us whether ANY of the sick children at Waldorf school were vaccinated or not?

In recent whooping cough outbreaks, the majority of children who got sick were fully vaccinated, so the fact that public health is pushing for vaccination but doesn't want to tell us the sick kids at Waldorf were NOT vaccinated, strongly suggests that they WERE in fact vaccinated and got sick anyway.

The truth is that like the TB, malaria, becterial meningitis and every other bacterial vaccine, DTaP shots are ineffective - which is exactly why TB and malaria shots are rarely given - they DON'T work.

2014-10-20 11:09 AM

There have been too many shark attacks lately, mostly by Great Whites. It is time for a cull of Great Whites in the region. No, 685, it is NOT "their world". Humans have been in and on the sea as long as there have been humans. In fact, we are descended from creatures of the sea. As fellow members of the animal kingdom we have the right to survive too. Great Whites have proven that they are not willing to share the sea with us as most other sea creatures do peacefully, so we have the right to defend ourselves by eliminating them from the tiny part of the ocean that we use. Those that defend the Great Whites are largely responsible for recent shark deaths and have blood on their hands.

Parents are afraid of vaccinations because of the higher correlation with autism as a result of vaccinating one's children. For parents it's a tough choice especially if their personal experience (anecdotal) has raised the bias towards autism vs. the incidence of the disease being vaccinated against.

Don't cull sharks. As an apex predator, there are 90% less of them in numbers than the next level down in the food chain. Kill them off and their prey numbers will explode. Same thing with mountain lions, wolves, etc. The Asian fishing fleets are decimating shark numbers (not whites, but other types).

They do have keen senses, but they are also curious and don't have hands. It may have bitten the boat to try to figure out what it was. It's also possible the boat gave off a strange electromagnetic field it wasn't used to.

I've never heard of Tiger Sharks being common in these parts and never seen one. I thought they were more of a warm water species.

As to P, given the water-guzzling technologies the oil companies would have to use to squeeze more barrels out of the county, the risks to the aquifers from their toxic leftovers, the messy track records of both big and little oil, and the megabucks they've desperately dumped into this election to get their way because they know how destructive what they want would be, then Yes on P - a vote for water over oil during a drought.

Rent is not the largest expense because at $6734/yr, or $562/mo for 12 mos (because most rentals have 1 yr leases) you have to cram 4 kids in one bedroom. Only kids are willing to live like that, so they are the preferred renter. If you had to assume each student would get a room, minimum rent in sketchy areas is more like 800-1000/mo, or $12000/yr. That would make rent equivalent to tuition for in-state students.

I wish people could make political points by

a) not using labels, or pejoratives

b) not regurgitate myths to smear, as in the myth of what Nancy Pelosi said but did not, and in the myth of what Obama said but did not.

c) label people from one side as all thinking the same (I work with a mix of people from both sides, and none of them are cookie-cutter examples of either side).

That is, keep comments unemotional, and non-judgmental - and judge the deed rather than the person i.e. discuss a point without smearing or belittling.

I am well aware that both sides have done good and bad. And both sides should keep the other side in check using fair, and honest means.

If we did all that, then we could call ourselves civilized.

This shark attack is much more credible than the recent attacks at/near VAFB, i.e. no claim that she flew through air, or was pushed 50 feet laterally through the water, or that the shark flew in the air and "banked like a 747.''

That said, SB county must have some of the dumbest sharks on the face of the earth - according to the "experts" on TV, sharks have extremely keen senses and can usually tell the difference between living and and inanimate objects, so it really is weird that they have suddenly developed a taste for plastic and fiberglass kayaks.

The whites are on the increase too or spending more time south of point conception... and they are in shallow water after their prey. Less than 20' deep in some cases. There have been six local (SB) encounters that I know of this year south of Gaviota - not counting what's happened up at Surf Beach. Mostly with kayak fisherman. There has been a moratorium on them for 20 years. All fun, games and research until someone gets munched. There have been so many shark sightings and attacks on the central coast in the past two years I think it might be time for some culling! 593P: I agree with you for the most part, I feel the same way about mountain lions and hate when they are killed, but it seems there are plenty of sharks in these here waters. Oh, Tara, so glad you are in one piece, and that must have been some crazy paddle back! I'd have been scared to death!

Drought Hits Hope Ranch

The City has a reclaimed water system for watering the fairways at the municipal golf course on Las Positas. It generally cannot be used on greens because of its high metallic content which would kill or damage the fine grass on the greens. I believe Montecito CC was also trying to get onto the system. It is not just a matter of using that water but the existing potable water systems cannot be used to deliver reclaimed water so the investment requires a separate distribution system. The Goleta Sanitary District has consistently had surplus tertiary treated reclaimed water available for years. It could be picked up by trucks (maybe it is being obtained that way now) to deliver water to those wanting to preserve valuable landscaping.

Lucky for Tara. It looks like a crack was starting which could have broken off the end of the outrigger filling it with water rapidly and making it much more difficult to get back to shore than with a slow leak seeping in through the few bite holes.

Edhat's General Election Poll

2014-10-20 07:50 AM

639 - huh? S has nothing to do with patriotism, absolutely nothing! It's about a too greedy administration that values buildings over education.

Vote NO on S and tell SBCC to come back with a measure that is tailored to what its district can afford. Tell SBCC to give up the nightmares of grandeur and tend to basics; tell our much loved college to clean up the overcrowding it causes on the lower west side and in IV --- to do that, please vote NO on S.

I find the judgment made on the "wealthy" in our area is really embarrassing! Really? Do people walk around this town thinking this? Grow up worry about your own leaking toilet and stop blaming the "rich" for whatever you feel they should pay for and endure because they are successful. Its awkward and childish to make these generalizations when you know nothing about them or their money, geesh.

Barking Dog Woes

That "need two complaints to do anything" rule is not in the ordinance. It is just something the city cooked up to decrease the number of calls they have to respond to. If you are the only one that will complain, tell the animal control officer that the other neighbors are also concerned but are afraid of the dog owner. Keep after them until they respond. If they still refuse, contact the City Council and anyone else in the city government you can think of and let them know how your city government is working for you.

I have 3 dogs and they are not allowed in the yard to bark at passing people and dogs when I'm not home.

Edhat's General Election Poll

2014-10-20 07:26 AM

The real benefit of a yes on P is filling attorneys pockets with even more $$$. The water guardians don't tell you that part.

It's unfortunate that anytime someone disagrees and plans to vote no on P they must be some paid oil company troll. Totally unfounded nonsense. The propaganda stating that there could be some sort of fracking boom in SB is one huge lie. There is no fracking occurring in SB and the locally geology doesn't support its use in the first place. fracking is a non-issue in SB.

The voters got duped on this one. The signatures takers used the trendy fear of fracking to get the measure on the ballot without clearly stating that this measures goes far far beyond banning fracking and will essentially ban an entire industry in SB. Put a measure on the ballot that bans fracking only and then you'll get my vote.

I'm a patriotic American, so I'll vote Yes on S. In other countries they're greedy and selfish, taking all they can for themselves and never giving anything back. That's not the American way. I'll wager everyone here benefited directly or indirectly from our once-excellent state college system, which is now crumbling due to Prop 13. Time to fix that.

You got yours. Now, help the next guy get his.

If shark populations are increasing, probably at a rate higher than linear, at some point, they should be culled. But one would have to admit shark quantities in the 1980's did not lead to mass hysteria of "the world is ending our shark population is too low and everything died"!

Long Term Care Insurance

2014-10-20 06:34 AM

All I knew was that I had to have a very solid insurance co, so it's Genworth for me. for 8 years now I ve been paying 285 a month, could I have invetsed that ?who can say.
BUT
when that time comes, I'm sure I will need an advocate since I don't really trust insurance co's,and no doubt they will put up a fight and argue about every small detail.
They haven't raised my rates but from what Im hearing I'm sure they will. Now I have so much invested in it and I don't want to lose all of that.
God forbid if I'm in some demented state by then. I can ony hope.

Century Bike Ride on Saturday

2014-10-20 06:32 AM

Here come the holier-than-thou drivers, again.

Have you looked at how many of your fellow motorists break laws, every single day? You just don't notice it because you've seen it so much for your entire life.

Speed limits (how many people go 65 or less on 101?)
Ca. stops
Running red lights (check out Hollister/Storke left turn up the hill sometime)
DUI
Tailgaters

The angry drivers just can't see that there are proportionally far more drivers breaking laws, so they get mad at riders.

I also don't get why people always have to point out that cyclists wear spandex as though it is some sort of bad thing? It's called being comfortable and the right temperature. Do you also always point out that runners, rock climbers, yoga participants, and many others wear similar clothes?

Bug ID

2014-10-20 12:05 AM

Leptoglossus zonatus occurs in southern and western U.S. (CA, AZ, FL, LA, TX).

"The adult is distinguished from other Leptoglossus spp. by having a whitish zigzag band across the corium and two pale yellow spots on the anterior pronotum." (from University of Florida Entomology & Nemotology Dept.)

Considered a pest of almonds, pistachios, avocado, cotton, squashes, eggplant, guava, lime, melons, oranges, pomegranate, sorghum, tomato and Chinese tallow. (No Chinese tallow in these parts, right?)

No mention of persimmons, but leaf footed bugs probably like sweet sugary persimmons, too.

I say wash them off and tell them off and they will soon leave off (nice pun!) as temperatures drop.
