SBPD Responding To A Possible Fight

2015-02-27 05:49 PM

"Man hater"? Since I happen to be a man, that phrase has about as much meaning as 'self hating Jew' when applied to any Jewish person honest enough to admit that Israel is ruled by a bunch of murdering thugs.

And I don't know what someone who thinks people should be thrown in a wood chipper has to "lol" about. We all know you think it's just a big joke, so why shouldn't the kids?

Just face it, America is a sick society that naturally produces sick children who want to get in fights all the time... because that's what their "heroes" do.

As if children who watch American Sniper and are taught that "heroes" who murder people from a half mile away are somehow "fighting for freedom" are going to be non violent... as if.

Winter Storm Watch

2015-02-27 05:49 PM

The high-pressure ridge diverting California's much-needed rain to the Pacific Northwest is part of a weather pattern that's also responsible for the biting cold invading the Midwest and East, dumping epic amounts of snow. The pattern, similar to that experienced last year, is influenced by the unusually warm temperatures of the West's coastal waters.

What is clear is that the high-pressure ridge and its counterpart, a low-pressure trough, are causing weather disruptions across North America.

"It's the up and the down of the same atmospheric pattern," said Stanford University climate scientist Daniel Swain, who last year coined the term "Ridiculously Resilient Ridge." One waggish East Coast atmospheric scientist recently dubbed its counterpart the "Terribly Tenacious Trough."

The ridge and trough are part of the jet stream -- think of a river in the upper atmosphere -- through which winds carry storms and clouds. The shape of the jet stream determines who gets the sunshine and who gets the rain and snow.

Right now, the warm weather winds carrying precipitation are skirting California's coast -- although forecasters expect light rain this weekend. And once they've dropped the rain and brought unseasonably warm temperatures to Alaska, they'll cool down and dive back south. Normally, the winds flow west to east.

After each storm, however, the ridge-trough pattern quickly re-established itself. Climatologists say unusually warm coastal waters may be contributing to the pattern's persistence.

The cold and snowy weather on the East Coast has captured most of the headlines this winter, but the majority of records broken in the last month across the country were for heat. In February, there were 3,674 record-breaking highs versus 2,664 record-breaking lows.

And last week's NOAA forecast predicting a hot, dry March for California is not good for Central Valley farmers craving water -- and not good for keeping down soaring heating bills back East.

Traffic Accident on San Andres

2015-02-27 05:19 PM

Shakey: I grew up on the Westside, and it’s always been called and spelled San Andres and I bet I’m older than you. All street maps from the early 1900s also spell it (correctly) as San Andres. That’s the problem with misinformation, people get something wrong into their head and start believing it, then actually try to correct people who have the right information. People who persist in saying and spelling it wrong are doing no favors to anyone, especially people who believe their nonsense.

Fatal Traffic Collision Update

You can all believe whatever you want, but the truth is that 'brain-dead' people are not actually dead until their vital organs are removed and life becomes impossible.

As for the tests supposedly performed to prove brain death, there is no legal criterion or requirement for EEGs - the opinion of a couple doctors is really all it takes. And if organ donors are really dead, then ask yourself why it's necessary to give them drugs to paralyze and for pain? Dead people don't feel pain...

Supervisor Pay Raises Getting Close...

2015-02-27 03:03 PM

The article in the Independent states that our supervisors are underpaid compared to supes in other similar counties, so the raises are justified. This argument doesn't hold up. So if government leaders keep raising their salaries in one county then others should follow? That doesn't make any sense!

Why not tie their pay to real metrics such as year-over-year budget surpluses, or the overall condition of the County's infrastructure and capital projects, whereby they ensure funding for roads, utilities, schools, and parks. Or maybe improving the academic achievement of our youth, lower crime rates, access to affordable housing, quality healthcare, and improved diversity for good paying jobs!

These things aren't sexy, but they are the BUSINESS of running a local government, and that's how our supervisors should be compensated.

Questions on Drought Restrictions

2015-02-27 02:08 PM

The GWD posts on their Stage II page: "Residents are encouraged to use pool covers, which reduce water loss associated with evaporation," so based on that lax verbage I'm going to guess you are allowed to drain and fill, if you can afford it.

In SB city you can't drain more than 30% right now, which is why someone has an add on Craigslist selling their pool water.

I currently have really high levels of CYA in my pool (long story, bad previous owner) requiring a 50% drain and fill. Since I'm in the City of SB I can't do that so I have my rain gutters diverted into my pool this winter to try to dilute it and my CYA is dropping.

What sort of "survey" is only announced to a limited number of people who are "invited" to give their responses, and results are tabulated with only 500 responses in a city of 90,000? When I had to do a survey for a class in high school, I would have gotten a failing grade if I surveyed that tiny of a fraction of the student body.

Anyone conducting a real survey does real outreach to make sure they get a representative sample of the population. It's obvious the PD did their outreach to their own employees. What about all the rest of us?

That besides people enjoying having their dogs offleash, the report acknowleges there are conflicts among users at offleash areas, that having residential parking to a regional sized park is a problem, arriving at dawn to park in a neighborhood is disturbing, that dog owners disobey the laws, etc. Trying to mix small children, picnics on towels at the beach with offleash dogs is just asking for trouble. Having large dogs running down steep stairs offleash to the beach is just asking for trouble. Designated and fenced off-leash areas work well in other cities. Santa Barbara needs to get with the program.

After foreclosure, the rules seem to change, and the new "owners" don't seem to have to abide by any standards.

Typical duplicity....

@566P: As reported in the Santa Barbara View, the categories (I count 11), listed here in order of alleged top priority, were:

Streets/pavement, police station, sidewalks, bicycling facilities, park facilities, recreation facilities, fire stations, libraries, community centers, access ramps, and finally, administrative offices.

You can’t tell me that a bicycle-crazy town like Santa Barbara would place a police station ahead of bike facilities.

In the recent foreclosure Bankster Boondoggle, it has been estimated that up to 85% of foreclosures have been illegal -nationwide. ILLEGAL. Understand that word? That implies serial criminality - to the tune of $Trillions, within the banking and lending industry, while our crony capitalist system and society looks on and says: Bring. It. On.

Meanwhile, what happens to people who have been illegally foreclosed upon? The criminals in the banks invoke the willing services of the local police and bailiffs to evict, and no questions are asked, or permitted.

This cause of homelessness is naturally ignored by the corporate weasel media and their pathetic apologists, presumably because such a notion is a sacrilege against Mammon, our current and prevailing religion.

308 speaks truth. Government related industries are usually among the worst offenders, and they love to exempt themselves. As a now 60 year old, who worked in IT for decades at UCSB, their sexism was obvious to anyone who paid attention. Women IT workers were regularly assigned more administrative tasks, to justify why they were classified lower than male colleagues. The bigger and more bureaucratic the industry, the more likely it is that institutional sexism is entrenched. That said, legislation is seldom the answer to ongoing cultural issues. Saying, "it's illegal to be biased" just makes bigots more creative and subtle in their bigotry, so they pass legal muster.

I live in Goleta, so didn't participate in a SB survey. I've participated in a number of Goleta "government" surveys, and found them to be so biased that they'd never pass any academic legitimacy test. The preferred (by those in charge) answers are pre-selected, and the survey is always conducted in such a way that the government people can interpret the results the way they wanted them to go. It is a pretense that the public voted for this. I didn't use to be so cynical, but a couple decades of dealing with craven local politicians and government bureaucrats have definitely jaded me.

These problems are well documented, as are solutions to the problems provided by social systems of most first world democracies. I can't find the link, but this was covered on the PBS News Hour last year.

Among the interesting things revealed was the giant "gap" was due to a) there are more women than men and b) more women worked at part time jobs and lower paying jobs than men.

When it is all added up to calculate for the "average" wage, of course the women showed a huge gap. As Mark Twain offered, "Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please."

According to GAO (or whatever government agency did the study), most women working the same job as a male makes close to or equal to the same pay.

Don't be surprised if the new police station is a done deal - just look at how the new police station in Santa Maria has turned out: it went from an "upgrade" of a 1,500 sq. ft. typical small town police station to a 70,000 sq. ft. windowless concrete fortress. The project started out "under budget", and is now millions of dollars in the red.

From what I've seen on TV, the SM police station doesn't appear to have a single external window - no natural lighting pretty much ensures the building will be an energy hog, plus the police already have an 'us verses them bunker/siege mentality' - the last thing they should be given is a windowless fortress to hole up in like a bunch of paranoid preppers .

Rather than a new station a smaller substation at the old Army reserve property at Las Positas and State would be a better idea and certain functions could be shifted there. The downtown Figueroa site IS overcrowded and there in no parking and poor access for the general public who may walk in. Much of the recent growth has, and future growth will likely be, to the Northwest. This would cost less than a whole new police station. The dispatch center has already been moved from the basement of the old Figueroa station because of earthquake concerns. I certainly second the very real need for roads repair (despite green/sustainable everything anti-car crowd) and I would put road repairs at the top, or very close to the top, of any priority list.

Many years back, after the Levy Hotel at Chapala and Carrillo failed, I suggested that the nearly half block empty property be purchased by the city for a new police station. Guess the bright minds in charge thought a grocery store was better.

The next large piece of property was the Vons at Victoria and Chapala which could have been used for a temporary police department while the current one was razed and rebuilt. Nope.

Hey City! The former Army Reserve building at State and Las Positas might be the perfect site for a new police station or at least a place to relocate while the old one is demolished and a new one built.

There are not enough red zones around the driveways. When you pull out it's impossible to see with the cars & trucks parked right next to the driveways. If the City painted the curbs red a few feet around the all the many driveways it could help. Another is speed. If the City installed those 25 mile per hour berms in the road it would cut down on through traffic and speed.

Jackson Introduced Calif. Fair Pay ...

2015-02-27 07:02 AM

These comments from mostly men make me physically ill and remind me that we have such a long way to go. Not only is there inequality in women's pay but we also have a large group of men wanting to control what a women does with her body instead of letting women work with their doctor's on these issues. I am also one of those women who change the oil in my car, paint my house, do my home repairs, and get by just fine.

Neighborhood Home Foreclosure

2015-02-27 07:01 AM

Hummingbirds' Migration

2015-02-27 06:19 AM

Santa Ynez Valley checking in; we have an average number of hummingbirds for the winter cycle, but have yet to get the flock size of summer. Slightly off topic, but my flame seedless grapes have bud break about a month early which i am sure is tied into the unusual weather patterns we are experiencing, so the standard humminbird migration cycles might be affected also.

481, Agreed. Let's do an Edhat survey. I'll start, I vote for road repairs and repaving. The roads in this city are deteriorating with each passing storm and are in dire need.

Hummingbirds' Migration

I have Annas and Costas and Allens all year long. Make sure your feeders are visible from the air and not blocked by leaves and trees. Keep them clean. Use cane sugar and water mixture. See instructions anywhere on the web.
