Engineer Wins in Discrimination Cas...

2014-07-26 08:02 AM

@579 Telling someone that they have too much experience or are overqualified, while not a smart thing to do, is not automatically age discrimination. If I'm recruiting for an engineer with 2-5 year experience I'm looking for an early career engineer and the salary I'll be paying will reflect that level of work. Yet I get resumes with 10-15 years of experience, or more. That person with 10-15 year experience is not going to be challenged by the work and the salary will be 20-30K less that what they have been making. Not an ideal situation for anyone involved. Can he do the job, yes. Is he the best qualified? No. In this case someone with 2-5 year of experience is the more qualified candidate. None of this has anything to do with age, it has to do with the level of work that needs to be done and the salary that goes along with that work.

Pedestrian Crosswalk Sting Results

2014-07-26 08:02 AM

144 hardened criminals, I'm sure. I didn't know we are required to stop for all pedestrians at "unmarked pedestrian cross walks" which is apparently every single intersection that's not painted. That's seem very efficient and environmentally conscious.

Early AM Noises

2014-07-26 07:59 AM

OP thank you and please let us know if you find out what the noise is. There was a post several months about about a Goleta Hum and the results yielded a wide area of noise complaints. On craigslist in the community section you can search for a reoccurring post from someone about a Goleta Hum. People are noticing noise and are looking for answers. The post on edhat several months ago revealed a widespread noise condition(s) but no concrete source or follow-up was produced. Could be multiple sources. While some posts are anecdotal or dismissive it seems as though many are looking for solutions. Earplugs, sound machines, doctors visits for medications, self medication, suggesting a problem sleeping which is detrimental to health. As for your particular location, if the noise is a local source, it could be from that phone company building. There is a large generator probably for emergency power backup and could probably be used for other reasons.

How is any betterment of life going to take place if all you do is complain at the sidelines? Realize some people are willing to improve the situation and don't mock them. Go to the meeting yourself.

Engineer Wins in Discrimination Cas...

2014-07-26 07:55 AM

539579 - Wow. That is quite a stretch. There is absolutely no connection between the ACA and age discrimination. How do you explain age discrimination that has been occurring well before the ACA was enacted? I guess everything is Obama's fault. It's foggy today...thanks Obama!!

Statement Regarding Animal Death

2014-07-26 07:53 AM

It only takes a split second! Dogs' business is to get up in each other's faces territorially and they don't have anything to do in a kennel situation but stay on high alert and look for an opportunity to slither out, find out who's that noisy dog they've been smelling and hearing in the room next to them in THEIR house and meet them head-on, sometimes very aggressively. They're SO fast. So sorry for the employee who will never be the same.

Illegal Food Vendor Enforcement dur...

2014-07-26 07:48 AM

9145 how much can these vendors really make at the park? I'd rather see them try to make an hones living than steal, beg, welfare or sell drugs. You don't have to buy or eat what they sell. They might not pay taxes in the little that they make but am sure they spend the money in rent, gas, food , bills. It's not like they are burning the money or burrowing it. We should be looking at all the companies and many locals that say they live in other states not to pay taxes.

Catastrophic Animal Loss

2014-07-26 07:28 AM

We have noticed a perhaps 90% decline in spiders as well as butterflies in our yard. Is anybody else noticing the lack of spiders? For example, not one spider has been on our walls this summer, not one. And last autumn, when the yard is full of those golden orbed spiders making their webs, there were only a couple. No spraying around that I know of. Of course, already the bees are almost non-existent on even their favorite bushes here. De la Guerra/Voluntario area.

Statement Regarding Animal Death

2014-07-26 07:12 AM

Dr. Wada, it was not one kennel door left open but three. And it is not just one kennel staff, or two dogs that caused the horrific death of a defenseless old dog. It is the SBCAS system that is so very flawed that killed this dog, and has continued to allow for countless other unconscionable situations for many years. From 1991-1999 it was DAWG that was able to make up the difference at the shelter so that dogs received better care and more resources than from SBCAS, and from 2000-2011 it was K-9 PALS that made up the difference so dogs received better care and more resources while at the shelter. There has been no other animal welfare organization for dogs in the shelter since 2011 because SBCAS wants to run it "their way". The tragic horrific and brutal death of this poor dog killed by two dogs county deemed "adoptable" is a result of how SBCAS runs the shelter their way. Maybe this tragic situation is what it finally takes for an investigation into SBCAS.

Pitbulls shouldn't even be allowed to exist. This breed is extremely aggressive as we all know. It's a breed that kills.

Catastrophic Animal Loss

2014-07-26 06:59 AM

Kill all the predators and you'll kill the planet!
Another threat is to sharks. Humans are killing one hundred million sharks a year. Removal of this large predator in the ocean could have devastating effects, perhaps even reduce or eliminate most oxygen from the planet. If you have seen the 3 minute video of what happened to Yellowstone when wolves were eliminated, you know that by killing all the predators it could mean an over-abundance of smaller creatures, and will certainly change their habits. As 80% of the planets oxygen comes from algae in the ocean, what will happen when that algae is eaten up?
The truth is that we just don't really know what will happen. But as a scuba diver, sharks are docile, shy creatures. Please leave them in the ocean - with all their fins. (Sharks fin soup is one of the main culprits).
Hey - it's not my problem as I didn't have children. But for those of you who did have children, you have a future to think about and protect.

Statement Regarding Animal Death

2014-07-26 06:46 AM

At the SB Shelter there are 3 Animal Control Officers plus another ACO part time, 2 full time Kennel Staff. 2 Desk Clerks and a Shelter Supervisor. - a 5:3 ratio of hands on and office. They are adding another 'extra help' kennel staff and apparently someone part office part dogs, making it 6.5:3.5. Anyone concerned about the ratio or the budget should have been at the recent budget meeting to speak. Anyone wanting the pay scales can go to "Job and Salary info" on the SBC website and get facts.

Mugging on Upper State

Compassion is not enabling one to continue to purchase addictive substances. There are multiple organizations that provide food in this town... No one need be hungry. Listen to those who are truly advocates for this population and are trained in psychology, social work and poverty issues... They advocate help, not enablement.
