Left front to right rear looks more like the black car turned left in front of the other, failure to yield. Any way 25+25 does not equal 50 in a head on. Marilyn vos Savant just explained this. It's the same as hitting a wall at 25.

So the ends justify the means in the legal community if you are a cop, but if you are a lawyer it is unethical. But we should trust cops. After all, cops tell lies only judges and juries believe. And DAs never lie or conceal evidence. The SCOTUS wrote the Brady decision as an advisory opinion just in case that ever does happen.

The Food Network star pled no contest to driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher and was sentenced to three years’ probation and fined $2,386, according to a spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County District Attorney. She also has to attend nine months of DUI school and received a 120-day suspended jail sentence that she will not serve as long as she fulfills the other requirements. Her penalties are the standard protocol for first-time DUI offenders, according to the spokesperson, so there’s no preferential celebrity treatment here.

Well, just speaking for myself, I had issues with a corporate employer once - my abuse lasted a lot longer and was a lot worse than what Michael Douglass' character experienced, and I NEVER seriously considered physically harming anyone in any way as retaliation.

A lot of people have called me a loser, and that may be true, but I've never been such a loser that hurting someone else made me feel like a winner. (Which is not meant as a criticism of Rambo, who was a veteran just passing through a small town and was subjectively judged an "undesirable" - he had a right to self defense.)

Leaking Pipe on Hot Springs Trail

2016-12-03 11:51 AM

Mesarats, I remember that well! Used to go there from time to time for hot soak. At least once, if I recall, you forgot to remove the plastic! No biggie. We "enhanced" the pool with rock.

You forgot to mention that in order to get there you must make your way through some pretty dense poison oak, at least back then. No worries! We just took off our cloths and walked through the poison oak knowing we could wash is off in the hot pool.. Whoops! The result was a nice good soak, which allowed the toxic oils easy access to seemingly every pore in our skin from head to toe! Rash all over and two weeks on prednisone and many jars of anti-itch lotion later we were hiking Hot Springs again. Avoiding the poison oak this time.

@769, did you not read the article? It specifically says, "While ASAP does not advocate giving pets as 'surprise' gifts, the process of selecting a new furry family member can be part of the 'gift' itself." Instead of people buying each other things they will never use, they can give themselves the gift of a new family member, as well as learning the interpersonal communication and responsibility that goes along with picking out and caring for the cat. My family "gave" my father a cat for his 85th birthday, but he came with us to the shelter and picked out the cat he wanted. We provided all the accessories as part of the gift.

Leaking Pipe on Hot Springs Trail

2016-12-03 10:55 AM

In the 70's my friend and I were hiking up there and we found a pipe off the path that was partially exposed and decided to make ourselves a soak spot. We came up later and he cut the pipe and put in a fitting that could be loosed with a pipe wrench. We made a small spot where there was already a natural crevice, would line it with thick plastic sheeting and open the pipe to fill it, close it back up and wait for it to cool. When we were done we would drain it and take our plastic and wrench with us. Low key. So many great nights up there with no one around. Skateboarding back under a full moon was the best.

Reduced Adoption Fees at ASAP Cats

Pets should not be surprises. Nor should they be viewed as toys. ASAP, please rethink this adoption promotion and keep it for AFTER the holidays.

ASAP should know better. I am an Animal Rights activist, one who has "rescued" many dogs and cats over the years, donated to ASAP and volunteered time to help with animal adoptions, spay and neuter, etc. ASAP is misguided in proffering cats as Christmas gifts.

It is well-known that living "gifts" are often subjected to much stress (Holiday gatherings, humans occupied elsewhere) and are often not even a desired gift, and so end up being rejected.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Cab...

2016-12-03 09:25 AM

@748P: I'm a little confused. There's a dedicated traffic signal at Cabrillo & Bath, so at some point the couple would have gotten the green light to cross.

According to the internal currently unpublished memo the County will be banning STRs. There will be a grace period for property owners to come into compliance. The County has a new designated position that will be dedicated to enforcing the ordinance.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Cab...

2016-12-03 09:02 AM

Last night, as it was becoming nearly dark enough for drivers to click on their vehicles' headlights, but still light out enough for pedestrians to be easily seen, here is what I witnessed:

A couple who looked to be in their 40s, stood hand-in-hand at the crosswalk at Cabrillo Blvd & Bath. They were on the beach side, waiting to cross. As I sat in my vehicle, waiting to turn right, off Bath & onto Cabrillo, heading west, I witnessed vehicle after vehicle speed past this couple. At least 10 vehicles.

My window was down, and I called out to them, "You're supposed to press the button!" I pointed at the pole next to them. They looked at me and smiled. I repeated my suggestion.

They both smiled and the man gave me a sort of shrug. I realized they didn't want to stop traffic by using the flashing lights. They were either content to wait and wait----or perhaps they were just being super cautious?

As I completed my turn, feeling quite astounded at the amount of drivers who, most assuredly, had seen these pedestrians waiting, but chose not to stop, I looked back and saw a giant Marborg truck come to a grinding halt, so that these pedestrians could be given their right of way.

I hoped the couple would make it across the street safely.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Cab...

2016-12-03 08:59 AM

I'm sorry about the accident, but Cabrillo, which I drive every day, is an extremely difficult street to navigate, both for tourists and drivers. The speed limit should be reduced to as low as possible, and policed. Pedestrians don't hit the button for the yellow warning light before they start to cross. Being able to see, from a car, that crosswalking pedestrian, is easily blocked from a smaller car's view by an SUV or large truck. Even with the yellow lights flashing, the timing of the yellow lights is sloppy enough (a problem also on Milpas) that a driver can think the crosswalk is finally emptied, when it still isn't. Cars pull out from the sides abruptly -- a distraction. People cross the street from Sambo's without looking. They stand in the street by their open car doors texting. It's just a very difficult, unpredictable touristy street and needs professional reworking.

Santa Maria Police Use False Report...

2016-12-03 08:54 AM

So the recent presidential campaign featured fake news being posted on line. The police apparently figure they don't have to be truthful about what goes out in their name. The feds have lied to us for decades about why we fight wars. Corporations lie about the risk of the products they produce. What people need to do is reestablish a sense of skepticism about the things they see and hear. Some don't even get that all advertising is untrue to some degree. We need to teach our children to be suspect. But too often we see people say we have to do what the authorities say. And, btw, the Supreme Court never said newspapers could lie. What they said was you can't recover for libel unless they lie with malice.

Santa Maria Police Use False Report...

It's police business. Leave them be to do their job. They take an oath to serve and protect us. I'd prefer to feel safe to sleep in my bed with them in charge. Amateur critics better keep this in mind. God Bless and thank you to those brave men and women who get up each morning willing to risk their lives for us, and the legion who sadly have paid the ultimate price for doing this, Rest In Peace.

In Favor of Short Term Rentals

2016-12-03 08:19 AM

I am opposed to STRs except for those in commercial, hotel-zoned areas. I have a guest cottage; it was tempting to convert it to a STR, but instead I rent it long term to a teacher. I sometimes think longingly about how much, much more rental money I could get, but being neighborly to my street's neighbors, includng my tenant now an integral part of the neighborhood, is more valuable to me.

There's also the question of fairness to hotels and motels, the owners and their employees who play by the rules. Seems to me that vacationers and other visitors should patronize our local, established and licensed businesses rather than enrich local homeowners who draw business away from the motels and hotels. An STR in a tourist area is like having a food truck parked outside a restaurant, inappropriate and unfair.
