Maybe it was at the outfall near Stearns Wharf. There is often so much…stuff…in the water there that probably anyone could walk on top of it.

This reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon I once saw: a young guy wearing board shorts and an Izod shirt is holding a drink and walking across the surface of a country club swimming pool. One of the blasé bystanders turns to his friend and says, "You know, that hasn't been done really well in years."

Goleta Beach Report

2017-02-20 04:11 PM

Nevermind that years ago the Coastal Commission rejected the idea of an artificial reef 200 yards off shore. It would "set a bad precedence" despite protecting the shore, creating a viable habitat for sea creatures, and making a unique surf spot. In the meantime, more emergency boulders on the beach that should have been placed there months ago (or even years ago). Haters will spew which law code it breaks, but everyone should bring a rock to the beach every time they go.

Guess what, since way back then they don't plant Italian Stone Pines in small areas or any areas for that matter.

Goleta Beach Report

2017-02-20 03:42 PM

Why doesn't anyone ask/charge the city of Santa Barbara for the protection of Goleta Beach. Goleta Slough and the airport land use to be a harbor where the whaling ships would come in. Storms of the century during the 1850's or 1860's brought a lot of silt and dirt down from the mountains to start an fill in the harbor. Then the military did the rest to fill it in to create runways for the military base, then SB bought the land for the airport. Mother nature is just trying to reclaim what it once had. If you want to save Goleta Beach, that means saving the airport, and thus the city of SB needs to be brought it.

Other wise, dig out all the dirt the military brought in and lets have a beautiful harbor once again.

Oh yeah, where to put the airport then. Good question. Lot of land in the valley!!

Goleta Beach Report

2017-02-20 03:22 PM

For those who make any pretense to read and understand the English language, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of articles in general media and in scientific journals have explained that Climate Change inevitably increases the FREQUENCY and INTENSITY of storms. The current devastation of Goleta Beach is just another example, of which there are many worldwide.

The Goleta Beach 2.0 plan, rejected by county supervisors several years ago, had it been implemented by now, would have surrendered the beach that is now gone, replaced the parking lot with new beach and removed gas, sewer and electric facilities inland.

Santa Barbara Influence

2017-02-20 03:10 PM

Having lived in SB since grade school, (off and on) I can say I've been greatly "enriched" by living here. SB instilled the idea that we are special --and, since it is a town so tied with Hollywood and the "beautiful people" we believed we could be that too. Since most of the people I went to school with couldn't get good jobs in this town of the "newly wed and nearly dead," most of them had to move. Except some of the "enriched" die-hards like me, who kept thinking we could make it here. Well, we are all older and wiser now. We realize all that glitters is not gold---"the beautiful people" ideal is a sad myth of trust funders and wanna be's, and the friends who've moved out of SB have done much better--financially, career-wise, and family-wise. Somewhat recently, however, SB isn't so much "the beautiful people" anymore. So many people are living 10 to a bathroom now, and the open space is being gobbled up by dense housing--and that is not pretty.

The Ten Commandments Filmed In SB

2017-02-20 01:18 PM

The scene of Jesus walking on water was taken in Santa Barbara off of the Plaza area.

The Plaza was protected by two seawalls. The outer most wall was capped by a wide and heavy bean that ran along the Plaza. At the right tide time an actor could walk the beam with just an inch or so of water on the beam. The story was told to me many years ago and I would love to find a news article about this event.

156. Usually only when it rains, but a lot of our infrastructure is old and outdated. Where you have trees, especially drought stressed ones and power poles it happens. The tree feel about 5:30 am with 3 loud booms and flashes about 5 min apart. About a block away the power came on about a hour later. When the Verizon lines go down sometimes it has taken over a week to return to full service.

During what seemed like the worst night the '83 winter, my dad and I were on the IV cliffs and watched the "IV tree" fall into the ocean. Waves were crashing over the top of the cliff and D.S. After that winter the cliffs were vertical walls of rock, like you see today.

I've found coyotes to be pretty predictable except when they have mange. Then they start acting very strange, they're out in the daytime, etc. Suppose they get grief from their pack at night, and they're desperate for food. Keep your distance and put the kids and pets inside.

Since before there was rat poison, animals got mange for a lot of reasons...but yeah, lay off the rat poison as it's no good for raptors either.

There's a creek along the side of my home, and the ground is saturated so that the concrete pit that the furnace is in under the house has been under a foot of water. The sump pump went out, there were none to be found in SB, had one shipped next day. That creek has been mostly empty for years. Could be worse; we don't live downriver from a dam. Without heat for three days reminds me to be grateful that the heat is usually there most of the time. As my Mom quipped "I'd rather be warm than rich." Dunno if I agree with that, but it was a funny, spontaneous remark when she told me to up the heat at her place.

Your photos show we certainly couldn't ride across the creek after this rain! The farrier, Art Chard, who shod my horse, grew up way up in that canyon. He came from a really big family. My guess is they lived there around late 1800s , early 1900s. Art was my grandma's age, she was born in 1891. Thanks for keeping us updated on the trails and creeks.

Santa Barbara Influence

2017-02-20 09:51 AM

I moved here in 2008... And the growth I've done as a person cannot be easily put into words.... Let's just say this; I wouldn't be the successful person I am today were it not for SB, and that is a direct result of me going through much agony and exploration as a person. SB made it... easier... It wasn't easy by any means, and I continue to learn and grow. However, the environment of SB helped me realize what's important... If you are at all familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, then I can say that SB helped me begin my journey towards Self-Actualization... and for that, I'll be forever grateful... Nothing quite like coming to profound realizations about yourself while enjoying the summertime sunset from the water tower that's 3/4's of the way to the Gun Club... Locals, you know what I mean...;) <3

Zoo's Lion Humanely Euthanized

2017-02-20 07:48 AM

I took care of this wonderful and spirited lion. She was a terrible mother, but it was sure fun taking care of the cubs since we couldn't trust her.

1995 Storm Picture Question

2017-02-20 07:40 AM

I have a bunch of pictures of that day, and yes, it was up to the level of the freeways at Garden and at Mission. I will try to scan them tonight and send them to Edhat.

1995 Storm Picture Question

2017-02-20 07:33 AM

At its deepest, the water in the underpasses was "only" a few feet deep – certainly not up to the level of the freeway. Anyone foolish enough to have jumped from the overpass into the water would have killed him/herself. There were a few attention seekers who swam in the polluted water, only to live to regret it, due to the huge amount of poison oak in the water that had been washed down from the creeks.

Good times!

Santa Barbara Influence

2017-02-20 06:34 AM

063, it's normally pretty hard to lead a horse to water in Santa Barbara because the creeks are all dry. Ok, bad joke.

I was improved by moving to Goleta from Los Angeles just by being in a smaller community where people know each other better and look out for each other more than in the big city vibe of LA. Big cities offer everything from a material standpoint but tend to be socially stunted. The anonymity of the crowd does not draw out the best from human nature.

1995 Storm Picture Question

The library would have past issues of the SB News-Press. Remember when you could search the microfiche? I'll guess the technology has evolved.

Coyote Sighting

2017-02-20 12:12 AM

It looks like mange. Sarcoptic mange can be fatal, but it is quite treatable. Here's more info:

You might want to call Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network at (805) 681-1080 to tell them about this animal, its whereabouts, and so on.
