Feb 11, 2006 - A Pipe and a Crepe
Today is Saturday, the best day of the week. It’s also Day 10 of the 11-day Santa Barbara Film Festival. Yesterday was sick. It was the world premiere of On the Pipe 2 at the Arlington. Now, if you are as naïve as the dedicated staff of edhat.com, you’re probably wondering just what “the pipe” is referring to – Snowboarding? Surfing? Skateboarding? A hash pipe? Plumbing? Organ music? All wrong. On the Pipe 2 is about dirt biking. Maybe the pipe refers to the tailpipe? Yesterday, the movie was followed by a punk rock concert. Guest reporter, Slick gets the dirt on this event.
At other venues on a busy Friday night was the showing of the controversial Karla, the showing of the Night of the Dog, and some Shorts programs. Well, eat our shorts - we can’t believe that we have neglected to tell you about one of the very best films here at the SBIFF.
It’s an animated short by Carolle-Shelly Abrams called, Alien Dinner Theater. It’s difficult to describe the plot, the characters, and the cool animation technique. But, those aren’t really the important things. What’s really great about Abrams’s film is its overabundance of creativity, playfulness, and as the main character, Natalie would say … savoir-faire. Abrams won last year’s award for best short, and she has our vote again this year.
We really wanted to attend the Night of the Dog and the after-party, but the dedicated staff was dog tired last night, and with a busy day of panels and tributes today, we had to skip the premiere, saving The Night of the Dog for another day.
It the press room yesterday, they were seeing dots … and lemonheads, and licorice as well. Someone had brought by a bucket of candy for all to enjoy.
