Feb 7, 2006 - Water Everywhere

Friend of Ed (FOE), Kim Deisler, told us that yesterday was, “Water Day” at our 37-letter named film festival. James Cameron was the award recipient of the day. There certainly was lots of water in his classic film Titanic (particularly toward the end). Local first-time filmmaker Kum-Kum Bhavnani debuted her film, The Shape of Water, about five women in five continents making a difference in the world. There was also water at the Arlington Theater, where things were as crowded as a high surf day at Rincon. They were there to see the world premiere of a very-local surf film, The Craving. To wrap up the day (or should we say, wring out the day), the James Cameron after-party took place at the Ty Warner Sea Center. Along with the usual offerings of water mixed with alcohol to drink, there were also touch tanks.

Luckily, the members of the dedicated staff of edhat are all good swimmers (really!). We were able to overcome the deluge to get from one venue to the next in order to bring you coverage of these events. The only time we started dogpaddling was at the SBIFF Press Office. We had gone there to photograph the food of the day, but there wasn’t any. However, we did find a hot dog. Soaking in the radiant warmth from the lamination machine was a cute little puppy named, Jude. It didn’t take much to persuade Ed to select Jude as this week’s Dog of the Week.

As you may recall, on Sunday we surveyed the lines at the Metro 4. We asked them five questions that involved choosing one of two things that they most identify with. This year’s questions were:

1. Brokeback Mountain or Magic Mountain
2. Capote or The Truman Show
3. Maria Bello or Saul Bellow
4. Matt Hasselbeck or David Hasselhoff
5. Sharon Stone or Kate Moss

Yesterday, we asked our dedicated subscribers to take the same survey. Here are the results:

58% of the people in line chose Brokeback Mountain, compared with 44% of our subscribers. It figures that the people at the movies would like movies more.

72% of people in line chose Capote, compared with 41% our subscribers.

51% of people in line chose Saul Bellow, compared with 48% of our subscribers. There were many people who didn’t know one or both in this pairing.

53% of people in line chose Matt Hasselbeck compared with 68% of our subscribers. Our subscribers took the survey after the Superbowl, if that matters. Many people in line didn’t know who the Seahawks’ quarterback was.

70% of people in line chose Sharon Stone compared with 73% of our subscribers. Recent news has not been favorable for Kate Moss.

For our contest yesterday, the question was what percent of people in line on Sunday were locals. Survey says – 74%. The winner of the contest was Hannah, with a guess of 73.2%. She wins an Edhat t-shirt, something her sisters will be envious of.
