2:07PM : There were multiple trees on fire earlier this afternoon at Haley and Brinkerhoff, around 2 p.m.
"The 1925 earthquake, about 6.3, destroyed many downtown buildings and is responsible for the Spanish style architecture of our town today. The fault lines that run east/west in our channel are capable of these kinds of large quakes, and of course a large earthquake on the San Andreas fault to our east could also result in damage in the Santa Barbara region. But there is absolutely no way to predict if a quake will happen based on other earthquake activity. In fact, all those small earthquakes you see on the USGS site seem pretty normal. But that's no reason not to prepare and educate yourself, because we will certainly have to deal with an earthquake sometime...the only question is when."
"The fact is that if an 8+ earthquake hit this area, it wouldn't matter if buildings had titanium frames and were built on springs...we'd be screwed. Most likely, all the routes into and out of town would be blocked for weeks. We would be isolated just like we were living on an island. No trucks to bring in groceries / supplies. No out-of-town workers able to get to their jobs. No workers from out-of-town able to get here. The busiest place would be the wharf, which would be the main entrance point for supplies, and the bars, which would be tasked with keeping happy thousands of people with no where to go. The good thing is that the community would probably pull together like it never has before."
"Or we could do neither, and make the minimum fine for tagging $1k. I bet if you added up all the public and private money used to clean up tagging, and divided it among the people who actually got caught tagging, it would easily be $10k per tagger. In reality, i doubt the fine is anything more than a speeding ticket."
"Well it's only for those business owners and residents in the loop, of course. "The good old Folks" You think I was invited? One of those Folks told me all about it."
"The Casa De Sevilla had a segregated section of the restaurant just for Montecito residents. Can you believe it? I worked for a guy who married Montecito money and used to brag (gag!) about how he and his wife always got seated right away at CDS."
"If you monitor the earthquake activity every day as I do you will understand the nature of the question and the urgent need to be prepared. If you are a homeowner be sure you have strapped your hot water heater to the wall per current SB codes and have a wrench already on your gas main shut-off valve. It may be years before our next large quake, or it could be today. Don't be worried, be prepared. Expect the center of quiet for some time to be the center of maximum flex when the quake hits (very yin-yang, eh?). That center appears to me a little NE of Figuroa Mountain. The faults that run directly under SB will break loose at some unknown time as well. Worry accelerates the onset of gray hair and being prepared slows it!"
