March 10,  2004 - Ed in Logo Land

March is supposed to come in like a lion and out like a lamb.  Well the only lion around here yesterday was lyin’ at the beach in the sun. In case you didn’t notice, it was an unseasonably hot day yesterday. Ice cream sales were up and soup sales were down.  It also was a good day NOT to wear a sweatshirt.

On this day of anomalous weather, the dedicated staff of edhat.com went to UCSB to check out the prevalence of school logos on articles of clothing.  It has been a long time since people started wearing company names and logos on our clothing. 30 years ago, people were wearing Izod alligators on their pink Lacoste shirts.  Esprit and Guess were popular for a while.  And there have been so many others since. Today, Abercrombie & Fitch seems to be the hot ticket.

Also, there seem to be a huge number of people walking down Santa Barbara streets with ‘Ed’ on their hats (what does it mean?).

Wearing clothing at UCSB with the UCSB logo on it seems like an undying trend. But, as the dedicated staff found out, there wasn’t much of it going on yesterday at the UCEN. We blame it on the weather. The heat had a disruptive effect on people’s wardrobes.  The hotter day inspired people to wear less clothing. The sweatshirts were left in the dorms, replaced by spaghetti strap top and other well-ventilated items.

We also did not see many hats.   We did see a lot of backpacks, but none with logos. On different ends of the clothing spectrum, we saw an older coed in a sweater-set trying to stir interest in social justice, and a couple of rebelliously dressed guys gathering names for a petition to put child molesters in jail. But none of them were sporting logos of any kind.

Out of the 200 campus observations only 11 of them had UCSB insignia – 4 of them wore sweatshirts, 7 of them wore T-shirts.  That is 5.5% for all you math majors. The average contestant in our survey guessed 33% with 6% being the lowest and 78% being the highest. Imagine if 78% of the students walked around with UCSB logo clothing … it would look like parochial school, don’t you think?

We had to select a winner among multiple contestants who guessed 6% and chose T-shirt for the tiebreaker.  Angelica was selected the winner. She wins her choice of a coffee card or movie tickets. It is probably too hot for coffee.
