LILY’S GUIDE TO FINDING YOUR MISSING DOG

1) Immediately Call:

  • County Animal Shelter: 681-5285
  • City Animal Control: 963-1513

Other numbers to keep handy:

  • Lost and Found Pets: 564-6862
  • Animal Control Emergency After Hours: 683-2724
  • SB City Police: 897-2300
  • Pacific Emergency After Hours Pet Hospital: 682-5120
  • CARE 24 Hour Veterinary Hospital: 899-2273
  • Santa Barbara Humane Society:  964-4777
  • DAWG:  681-0561

2) Make up a “Lost Dog” poster. Print up a lot of them and put them all over town. (Dogs can travel many miles in a short period of time.) Include on the poster: name, breed, a good color picture, phone numbers, and description. Offer a reward but do not state the amount.  Do not give your address on the poster. Make sure the posters are easy to read.  Some people use fluorescent ribbon to make them more visible. Put them in neighborhoods where you think the dog might be, and also at pet stores, vet offices, dog walking places (Elings Park, Hendry’s Beach, Wilcox Property), grocery stores, post offices, etc. Give the posters to police officers, postal delivery people, UPS/FedEx drivers, gas/water/electric meter readers, etc.

Time is of the essence.  Keep looking. Posters get ripped down or covered very quickly, sometimes in less than a day, so repost if necessary.

3) Email a picture of your dog to dogs@edhat.com.  We will send out the picture in our next day’s newsletter.

4) Walk the neighborhoods and talk to everyone you see, including kids.  Carry along posters to hand out. Call out for the dog; make familiar noises (rattling keys, squeaky toys, etc.).  Bring doggy biscuits.  If nighttime, bring a flashlight to look in dark places.  Women should not go alone.

5) Call everyone you know and have them help search and put up posters.  You never know who might spot your dog.

6) Visit the shelters daily so you get to know the workers.  Bring them the “Lost Dog” poster.  Speak to the dogcatchers. The most important place to visit is the County Animal Shelter at 5473 Overpass Road. Strays get dropped off there.  It also could not hurt to visit the nice dog-loving folks nearby at Santa Barbara Humane Society (5399 Overpass Road) and DAWG (5480 Overpass Road).

7) Call the local radio stations and to see if they will help with an on-air announcement.

8) If your house has a gate, leave it open.  Dogs have been known to make it home from very long distances.  Leave water, food and bedding outside.

9) Place an ad in the News-Press, Independent, or any of the local papers. Also, look in the papers for “Found Dog” ads.

10) Check your phone messages frequently. Be aware you may get many false leads, but follow up on all of them.
