It was a stressful week at edhat.com last week. We had to count coins in fountains and blueberries in muffins. We had to time our ride on a bunch of escalators. And, we had to transcribe the directions from oodles of shampoo bottles. There was also the Wind-Da-Ma-Jig thing-a-ma-jig. We had to strain our necks to take pictures and to figure out how it plays its melodious tune. And last, but not least, we had to defend our integrity to a number of ‘Soj’ loyalists, telling them that the waitress really did gesture and comment in the way Louie described in his article. Ahhhhh .... the stress of being a dedicated member of the edhat.com staff! What can we do? Hey, how about a massage? Over the weekend the dedicated staff called spas and independent massagers (masseuse) all over town to figure out how much it costs to get a massage in Santa Barbara. The prices were pretty straight forward, but making a decision what kind of massage created almost enough stress as to warrant the massage itself. There is Swedish, deep tissue, shiatsu, intuitive, sports, lymph, chi-balancing, acupressure, stone therapy, reflexology, Jamu, maternity, chair massage, British, and Oriental. You can add-on stuff like aromatherapy, coconut scrubs, facials, and body wraps. Spas all do their massages on location, but with the independents, you can go there or they can come to you. Many massages are advertised as non-sexual - we figured that one out on our own. Along those same lines, the usually bold dedicated staff shied away from calling the Bored Housewives Massage advertised in the phone book. It reminded us of a lot of the email spam we delete. Here are the prices we found for a 1 hour massage:
The average for all those we sampled was $73.53. For the contest we only considered guesses for a one hour massage. We had also asked subscribers to guess the average price of a 1/2 hour massage, but most practitioners only provide ‘chair massages’ for that short a period of time. 5 edhatians guessed $75 as the average price of an hour massage. They were Copperwyrd, Russ, Madrona Drive, Mookyhar, and Illiana. A random drawing chose Russ as the winner of the prize. We can’t offer Russ a massage to ease his day, but how about a movie or a nice coffee break?
