Lunch with Louie at Our Daily Bread
Santa Barbara food reviews with Louie the pessimist food critic

It’s Tuesday, the 6th of January, 2004 and the sky is as gloomy as the food we are about to eat. We enter Our Daily Bread, a bakery turned restaurant located on Santa Barbara Street near Canon Perdido. I feel hesitant but the feeling of a Prilosec in my pocket eases my fears.

From the menu posted on a wall behind the counter I choose a 1/2 sandwich and soup for $6.95. The soup was white bean and with it I asked for 1/2 turkey sandwich - sorry turkey is not included in that combination; how about chicken? (as a plate of sliced chicken is looking at me from the glass display), no chicken in that combination; no salami; no ham; no prosciutto.  What can I get I asked? You can have chicken salad. She won. I was already too upset to argue.  By the way, how about changing the sign on the wall ... it says soup and sandwich ... how about soup and a chicken salad sandwich? That makes sense.

The sandwich came and it was pretty average. I ate it.  No soup in sight. I asked the lady for my soup; she didn't like that, who knows why, after all it was my soup I had paid for it; still she didn't like me asking for my soup. Five minutes later she comes out from the back room with a plate of soup and she MICROWAVES IT - Campbell style.  I pick up my bowl of white bean soup (self service of course).  The white bean soup consisted of a quarter pound of soggy bell peppers and nine black-eyed peas? Not a very memorable experience.

I remember when Our Daily Bread started as a bread company.  That was a good idea.

When we were leaving the sandwich lady was talking to her just arrived boyfriend.  All was well and you could hear the chirping of hormones in the place. He ordered quiche. Good idea.  Don't get the soup buddy.
