January 6, 2004 - Climb, Walk, Run: Resolutions at the Track

The new year is in full swing … they’ve removed the live animals from the Mission nativity scene, two teams were crowned national football champions, and the kids are back in school being dragged by their thumbs callused from two weeks of nonstop Game Boy.  And, what about those resolutions? Have they already been forgotten like the New Year’s eve bean dip shoved in the back of the refrigerator.

The dedicated staff of edhat.com went out to check up on those brave and tireless ones who yet again vowed on the grave of Auld Lang Syne that this year they would lose weight, run a marathon, and give up junk food. Where else would we find these annual optimists but at the SBCC track?  There they would be spending their lunch hour running, walking, and climbing stairs … churning their spare tires into six packs.

So the dedicated staff packed up a healthy lunch and sat down in the SBCC bleachers. It was a beautiful day. The perfect temperature is when you can be not-too-hot wearing a sweater.  And we were. When we weren’t admiring the sparkling blue green ocean, we were watching people go round and round the track and up and down the stairs.  They did a lot of stretching, too.

Running was the most popular activity (it is a track after all). In our entire lunch hour (12:15 to 1:15) we witnessed 32 people exercising:  13 running, 9 walking, 7 on the stairs, and 3 others (a dad, a kid, and a coach).  We saw an even match of sweatpants and shorts, men and women, and young and old.  The average time for a workout was less than 20 minutes.  And if the truth be known, most people spent more time stretching than exerting. As we left, we did a quick count and found only 1 person on the track and 1 person on the stairs. The other 7 people there were working on alleviating their stiffness.

The most unusual sight we saw was a woman having a cell phone conversation while running up and down the stairs.  We can only wonder what the person on the other end of the phone was doing.

Running was the most popular choice in our daily contest.  PoloLady’s name was picked out of the edhat - she is  now a 2 time winner!  Today, she wins 2 free movie passes ... and we are sure that she will be checking out the edhat movie map for her movie times!
