March 2, 2004 - The Line at In-N-Out
In-N-Out Burger, not to be confused with Wash-N-Wear, Stop-N-Go, Fluff-N-Fold, Turf-N-Surf, Rock-N-Roll, Show-N-Tell, Sea-N-Ski, Park-N-Ride, & Eminen, is quite the popular burger place. They have a basic menu of burgers-n-fries, a reputation for fresh, high quality ingredients, and a loyal following of eaters. The In-N-Out in Sa-N-Ta Barbara is just off the freeway at Tur-N-Pike. From the freeway, you can see the line of cars at the drive-thru for most of the day.
On Monday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com Begged-N-Borrowed from our Friends-N-Neighbors so we could get the Dollars-N-Cents necessary to eat at In-N-Out. Things are actually quite cheap so we didn’t need much. Our purpose in going there was to check out the line at the drive-thru. Specifically, how many cars and how much time would be required to secure nourishment? On our drive over, it started to rain. When we got there, cars were driving around every which way. We Got-N-Line. There were 14 cars ahead of us. Six minutes later we were talking to the menu. That was when we figured out why they call it ‘In-N-Out’ and not ‘In And Out’. It is because they hire people who talk fast and slur their words!
“Wo-U-Like-On-Yuns?”
“Wha-Kine-Na-Shake?”
“Eat-N-Yur-Ka?”
I guess it wouldn’t have been so confusing if the dedicated staff had been In-N-Out regulars. But it was. And, of course, we quickly got over it. After ordering we paid. Then, shortly after that, we received our burgers. It was Three-N-Half minutes after we ordered, and 9 Minutes-N-23 seconds after we first got in line.
We ate our food N-Ur-Car. But we weren’t the only ones. Apparently that is quite Fash-N-Able. You crank up your tunes, push back your seat, and pray that none of the Ketchup-N-Mustard ends up on your shirt.
Contestants in the edhat “How Long is the Wait at In-N-Out” Contest had the correct numbers, but backwards. Instead of predicting 14 cars in 9 minutes, the average prediction was 9 cars in 14 minutes. In other words, our contestant thought it takes a Minute-N-Half to serve one customer. In fact, it only takes 40 seconds. Repeat winner Edda Hat came the closest again with her guess of 10-N-10. She wins two tickets for a Movie-N-Popcorn.
