April 14, 2004 - Ed Looks For a Job
Monday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com walked up and down State Street giving a dollar to any person who asked. And while we were only asked 8 times, the people doing the asking definitely needed it, and more. These people, and many others who were hanging out but not holding out a hand, didn’t really seem capable of putting their noses to the grindstone to pursue their American dreams. Some of them could barely stand. Responding to their pleas for donations with an Archie Bunker-esque, “Get a job!” didn’t seem appropriate.
That being said, the dedicated staff yesterday researched whether there even were any jobs available in this town. Hearsay logic would dictate that there were. The cost of living here is too high, they say. Retail and service positions can’t be filled because no one can afford to live on the salaries that those jobs pay. Maybe a few professionals can justify a commute from Lompoc to Santa Barbara each day, but for lower paying occupations, commuting is out of the question. And hey, what about those gas prices?
On Tuesday, the dedicated staff was working in the La Cumbre/Five Points area. Monday downtown, Tuesday upper State – hey, the dedicated staff could be bound in a nutshell and still count ourselves king of infinite space. We get around. We were in the city’s northernmost bastion of retail activity with the assignment of walking past all the storefront windows. We were looking to see how many stores were advertising for help; inquire within.
The staff found out that there seem to be plenty of opportunities for retail workers. Businesses want part time, full time, sales, management, baristas, and kitchen workers to work selling clothing, sporting goods, groceries, coffee, and pet supplies. To be considered for these positions all you have to do is go in and speak to the manager.
In all, we found 19 businesses looking for employees. Here is a list of all of them:

Contestants in the edhat.com “Count the Help Wanted Signs Contest” guessed low. 19 was the winning number. But, with the risk of bringing on a bad Stats 101 flashback, we must report that the average guess was 6.7, the median 5, and the mode 3. The winning prize will be awarded to Mud whose guess of 20 came the closest. We hope Mud chooses an edhat tshirt for the prize. Wearing one of our tshirts would be a real winner for any job interview!
