February 3, 2004 - Film Festival Personality Test

On Sunday all across America people were sitting on couches drinking beer, eating chips, and watching football. That’s what people are supposed to do on Super Bowl Sunday, aren’t they? Well, a couple hundred film festival patrons had different plans.  They much preferred a foreign flick to a forward pass, a touching drama to a touch down, and a cutting documentary to a color commentary.  It was films over football for them.

The dedicated staff of edhat.com turned down all of our Super Bowl party invites as well.  We had been assigned the task of getting to know the people waiting in line at the festival.  And, what better way, we thought, than with a questionnaire.  Now we couldn’t just go out and ask them “What’s your favorite movie?” That would be dumb. Instead we made it into a little game.  We would give them a choice of two things and they would choose the one that fits them best. The choices were:

Star Wars

Star Trek

Hugh Grant

Cary Grant

X Files

X Men

Marvel

DC

Disney

Warner Bros

Michael Douglas

Kirk Douglas

Tom Hanks

Tom Cruise

Jennifer Anniston

Jennifer Lopez

Sean Connery

Sean Penn

You know, those little things that define who we are as human beings.  Rorschach ink blots pale in comparison to sizing yourself up against Top Gun and Forest Gump!

Too bad we didn’t know about the Super Bowl half time wardrobe-malfunction-yeah-right-thing.  We would have added another choice:

Janet Jackson

Peter Jackson

With all of the hoopla going on in Houston, Sunday turned out not to be a very exciting day to stand on line at the Metro 4.  The guy with the white beard singing “Okie From Muskogee” on the guitar was no where to be seen!

The lack of excitement must be why the dedicated staff found such friendly people willing to take our survey. One woman who we accidentally skipped was even a little miffed that we had not surveyed her - but we went back. And, not only were the waiters-in-liners eager to answer, they also gave all of our question serious thought.  A couple of times it became a little uncomfortable for the dedicated staffers when friends or couples we were surveying disagreed on answers.  Some men got squeamish when they had to choose between the two Jennifer’s in front of their significant other.

The results, in order of popularity, were the following: Warner Bros.  (81%), Tom Hanks (75%), Star Wars (69%), Cary Grant (69%), Marvel (67%), Jennifer Anniston (65%), Sean Penn (57%), X Files (52%), and Kirk Douglas (52%).  The SBIFF crowd apparently is not into Disney or Tom Cruise

For yet another day, a first time entrant has won the daily contest. And this time in spectacular fashion. The average contestant scored 5.1 out of 9.  No one got an 8, but Karvsno (Carve Snow?) scored a perfect 9.

Karvsno wins a Santa Barbara gift pack that includes a genuine first-edition edhat.com hat, a jar of Marshmallow Cocoa Body Butter (for your skin) from Jaqua, 2 coupons for Cold Stone ice cream, and a See’s Candy gift certificate. Karvsno is also in the running for our week’s end grand prize drawing which includes lunch for 2 at Café Buenos Aires
