December 9, 2003- More Rock, Less Tock
We all know that when the DJ on the radio says “coming up ...” it means that that the station will be playing commercials for the next little bit. “Coming up” is a code word for “change the station right away or you will be forced to hear an earful of sales pitches for free weekend minutes, car insurance, and inventory-reduction sales. But how long will it last? On Monday the dedicated staff of edhat set out to figure out how much music is actually played in an hour, and which rock station plays the most music.
We conducted our survey by tuning in at random times throughout the day to KJEE (Independent), KTYD (Clear Channel), and KRUZ (Cumulus)- 43 times in all between 8 AM and 6 PM. Each time, we turned on the radio, pushed the tuning button for the 3 stations, and wrote down whether the particular stations was airing music, talking DJ’s, or commercials. The theory behind this survey was that the more music they played, the more likely we were going to hit music with our random time dart.
43 data samples is probably not enough to find a statistically defensible and categorically accepted winner, but it was enough samples to hear 3 different Bob Seger songs on KTYD! ... While, the KTYD playlist is as deep as the water in the kiddy pool at Los Banos, the playlist at KJEE (Audioslave, Jet, Three Days Grace ...) was mostly fresh to the demographically challenged (but dedicated) edhat staff. KRUZ, as they tell you, plays variety.
We found in our research that KTYD had the least number of commercials (12%), but KJEE had the most music (84%). KJEE came out the as the “most music” winner because KTYD does a lot of talking in the morning ... you know the morning radio thing. We think we might have heard something about “queer eye for the homeless guy”. KRUZ, toting “more music” in their slogan came out the worst of the three (21% commercials and 74% music).
The survey as a whole found the stations playing 46 minutes of music each hour.
In yesterday’s contest edhat subscribers were evenly split amongst the three stations. The name of ProCad was pulled out of the lucky hat as the winner of the free movie passes.
