D ecember 17, 2003 - Memorable Christmas Presents
Yesterday, edhat.com asked subscribers to send in a recollection of the most memorable gift they had ever received for the holidays. Memorable in a good way, that is. Not like the fruit cake that got nailed to the garage door or the Chia Pet that got left out in the rain. But the present whose memory, even today, gives them a warm feeling inside.
Aside from getting feedback from our subscribers, the dedicated staff of edhat.com attempted to get Santa Barbara’s elected officials to participate. We e-mailed and we called, but getting the attention of a politician is even harder than getting a plumber to show up at your house. The shining exception was the kind response we received from Santa Barbara Mayor Marty Blum who graciously told us about her best present - “A tree ornament, hand painted by one of my students many years ago, reminds me each year of all the students I taught.” Thanks Mayor!
Our subscribers were a little shy to share their memories, but the ones we got sure touch the heart. Here they are:
LED Digital Watch in 1978 (parent) - “It was impossible to read in the daylight, you had to push a button to see the time or date and it had no other functions. But it was the coolest thing ever to me at the time.”
Bike (parent) - “Last year my parents (that's you Ed) got me a nice new blue and silver striped mountain bike.”
Stingray Bike (Santa) - “I'll never forget how it looked shining in the reflected light of the Christmas tree. How did Santa know that it was the only thing I really wanted?”
Hopper Dancing/Talking Doll from A Bug's Life (husband) - “OK, I know this sounds goofy, but I am a huge Kevin Spacey fan and he was the voice of HOPPER the grasshopper in Disney's/Pixar "A Bug's Life". Well normally my husband doesn't pay attention to the silly things that I like, so imagine my surprise when I opened up a TALKING HOPPER that also danced when music or any other noise is near it. I was truly touched because he got me something based on something that I really liked. In addition, he bought me a black and white Kim Anderson poster that I had pointed out at one time. That was the best Christmas present ever!”
Surf board (parent)
An Ornament (other) - “A tree ornament, hand painted by one of my students many years ago, reminds me each year of all the students I taught.”
Cork board Painted like a Turtle (parent)
Doll House (parent) - “My father labored for months hand making a beautiful two story doll house for me. Gave me many years of joy!”
New Skis (wife) - “The skis were so cool, that the guy in the store who sold them to my wife said that when he grows up, he wants a wife just like her.”
Sports Illustrated Football Game (parent) - “I was really into football and my parents bought me this dice football game - both the College and Pro versions. It just seemed like a lot. But I guess my parents thought I was worth it.”
My grandfather’s pocket watch (parent) - “My dad gave me his dad’s watch on the first Christmas after I got out of college ... WOW!”
A ceramic made by my son (son) - “It is of a dad and a son fishing.”
A diamond pendant (husband)
A sweater and a dress (husband) - “My husband and I were just married and we couldn’t afford anything. My husband got me both of these.”
A microscope (parents)
